Special Buoy Installed Off Savaneta
Measures Sea Current, Wind Conditions

A special buoy has been installed by Lago west of the entrance
to San Nicolas Harbor about one quarter of a mile off the reef}
at Savaneta. On the reef nearby, an instrument shack has been
built which is connected to current and wave sensoring equip-

ment on the buoy. This equipment was installed under super-

vision of Lago engineers in co-
operation with Government
Harbor authorities.

The buoy and instruments
will assist in determining sea
movements and wind conditions
over a period of about one
year. They will help determine
a suitable location where off-
shore mooring facilities might
possibly be built in the future.

The buoy off Savaneta has
been painted yellow and will
have a white light at night.

E fiesta tipica di Pascu ta combina hopi costumber
y tradicion — e kerstboom, San Nicolas, luznan,
blachi di loranto, dunamento di regalo, cantamento,
y hendenan ta manda otro carchi. Hopi di e costum-
bernan ey ta directamente relaciona cu nacemento di
Cristo y nan tin nan raiz den cumplimento cu cierto
obligacionnan di iglesia. Otro tambe ta basa riba cos-
tumbernan di pueblo, algun di nan tabata existi an-

E palabra Christmas (Pas-
cu), segun Rev. Martindale, ta bini di e palabra den
idioma Ingles anterior Cristes Maesse, misa di Cristu,

y promer bez cu nan a tende e nomber ey tabata na _
anja 1038.

Un splicacion pakiko tin bez nan ta scirbi Christ-
Aunque nan no ta di
acuerdo tocante e palabra di Norte di Europa cu ta
Yule (of Jul), un fuente ta bisa nos cv e ta bini die

Europa segun e estacion di anja, cuminzando den e di
seis siglo. No obstante esey, na Merca e Puritanonan
di e colonia di Plymouth tabata contra tal celebra-
cion y nan a pasa un ley na 1659 cual ta boet cual-
kier hende cu celebra fiesta riba 25 di December.

Nan a revoca e ley na 1681, pero hopi tempu largu
habitantenan di Nueva Inglatera y e secta di Quaker
no tabatin ningun animo pa haci Pascu un dia di fes-
tividad. E colonistanan di Hulanda, mercenarionan di
Hessen, Alemania, durante Guera di Revolucion y
otro Europeonan cu a bini Merca a trece e tradicion
di alegria riba e dia ey, di intercambia regalo y tene
fiestanan riba e dia liber.

SAN NICOLAS. E colonistanan Hulandes a trece
pa Merca e tradicion di celebra fiesta di San Nicolas,
den e di 17 siglo. E tradicion aki tabata e precursor
di San Nicolas. San Nicolas tabata Obispo di Myra, y
segun nan ta conta e obispo a duna su tres rumannan

hanja hende bin casa cu nan. Cierto version di e
storia to bisa cu e ruman muher di mas hoben, des-
Di tres anochi e oro pé a jega. San

castiga muchanan malucu, y den e otro man un sacu
bon humor, e tabata gusta fiesta y e tabata anima
hendenan pa sunchi otro bao di e mata cu jama
loranto.

Washington Irving, e autor Mericano, a duna un
descripcion di San Nicolas di e colonistanan Hulandes
na 1809 y esey a hacié masha popular na Merca. E
descripcion di San Nicolas cu su bina den e poesia di
Clement C. Moore, H Anochi Promer cu Pascu, a
slee.

censia y mirra. Nan a recibi regalo pa reciproca nan
atension. Tradicion ta conta nos cu e tres reynan a
jega dia 6 di Januari (Fiesta di Epifania) y den hopi
pais hendenan ta cambia regalo e dia ey. Na Spanja
muchanan ta pone nan zapato pafor jena cu jerba
ariba e anochi promer cu Tres Rey. Durante anochi e
Tres Reynan ta core pasa tur caminda. E jerba pa
nan cabainan a somenta, y na lugar di jerba e mu-

a trata di hala atencion di nobo riba e coneccion di-
recto entre celebracion di Pascu y dia di nacemento
di Cristo. Nomber di e mensahero a bin bira Kriss
Kringle na Alemania; aunque tin bez nan ta usa e
nomber ey pa indica San Nicolas.

DORNAMENTO. Pino — mata y taki — tabata
worde usa durante fiestanan di Romanonan y otro
rito pagano.
noce te awor, probablemente ta bini di Alemannan.

Es-
poso Aleman di Reina Victoria, Principe Albert, a
introduci kerstboom na Inglatera na 1848. E color

How Christmas Customs Began

The typical Christmas combines many cus-
toms and traditions — the tree, Santa Claus,
lights, mistletoe, gift-giving caroling, and
card-sending. Many of these customs are
directly related to the birth of Christ and
stem from church religious observances.
Others, though, have a basis in folk customs,
some present even before the birth of Jesus.
Scholars it should be noted, do not always
agree about how each of the present-day fam-
ily rituals developed into the Christmas tra-
dition.

Early Christians did not celebrate the birth-
day of Jesus as a holiday festival as it is
known today for several hundred years after
He was born. The Rev. Cyril Martindale, a
Roman Catholic historian, has written that
such festivals were rejected by early Chris-
tians because they were associated with pagan
rituals. Later, the celebration of Christmas
was introduced to counteract the pagan feast
of the Sun-God held in Rome about December
25. The word Christmas, according to the Rev.
Martindale, is derived from the Old English,
Cristes Maesse (the mass of Christ) and was
first called by that name in 1038. The Dutch
word is Kerstmis. The Latin for Jesus’ birth
is Dies Natalis, root of the Italian Jl Natale
and the French Noel.

An explanation of why Christmas is some-
times written Xmas is that ”X” is the Greek
equivalent of the ’ch” sound and the letter ”X”’
is taken to represent the word Christ. Although
the northern European Yule (or Jul) is of dis-
puted origin, one source says it may derive
from the Anglo-Saxon word for feast, geol.

Christmas was a seasonal celebration in
Europe from the sixth century on. Neverthe-
less, in the U.S. the Puritans of the Plymouth
Colony were opposed to its celebration and
passed a law in 1659 to fine anyone who feast-
ed on December 25. The law was repealed in
1681, but New Englanders and Quakers long
were reluctant to make Christmas a day of
festivity. The settlers from Holland, the Hes-
sian mercenaries in the Revolutionary War
and other Europeans who came to America
brought the traditions of merrymaking, gift-
giving and holiday festivities.

SANTA CLAUS. Dutch settlers brought the
tradition of St. Nicholas to America in the
17th century. His tradition was the forerunner
of Santa Claus. St. Nicholas was Archbishop
of Myra and was said to have given three
dowerless maiden sisters his money, thus mak-

ing them marriageable. One version of the
story is that the youngest, after her two sisters
had each received a gold purse dropped down
the chimney on successive nights, hung her
stocking in the fireplace hoping for her gift.
She received it the third night. St. Nicholas
also became the patron saint of children.

In Europe, St. Nicholas became a figure on
a white horse (or donkey) who wore the robes
of a bishop and sometimes carried a bunch of
twigs in one hand to punish naughty children
and a bag of presents in the other for good
children. The evolution of this gift-giver into
Santa Claus includes aspects of Father Christ-
mas, a folk figure long known in Northern
Europe. He wore a red robe trimmed in white
fur, was jovial, enjoyed merrymaking and en-
couraged kissing under the mistletoe.

Washington Irving, the American author,
described the St. Nicholas of the Dutch settlers
in 1809 and made him a popular figure in
America. The description of Santa Claus and
his reindeer in Clement C. Moore’s poem, The
Night Before Christmas, imprinted an image
on the American public in 1823 of Santa as a
jovial, hearty gift-giver riding through the sky
in his sleigh.

DECORATIONS. Evergreens — trees and
boughs — were used in festivals in Roman
times and in other pagan rites. But the Christ-
mas tree as gen-
erally known
probably was
originated by
the Germans. A
German story
says the Christ-
kind chose the
fir and trans-
formed it with
gilded nuts, ap-
ples and lights.

Historians be -

lieve that Hes-

siansoldiers 4

spread the custom to America during the Re-
volutionary War and that German settlers in
Pennsylvania had Christmas trees as early as
1746. Because of these settlers, the Christmas
tree was used in America before it became pop-
ular in England. The German husband of
Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, introduced it in
England in 1848. The green color of trees and
boughs and the red of the holly berry are sym-
bols of Christ. The red is for His passion and
death, and the green for everlasting life and
eternity.

Displaying a tree in a window or using light-
ed decorations is a practice derived from the
custom of putting candles in the window to
light the Christkind’s way. A star, of course
symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, which guid-
ed the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ.

GIFT EXCHANGING. Exchanging gifts at
Christmas follows the example of the Wise
Men who brought gifts to the Christ child —
gold, frankincense and myrrh. They received
gifts in return. Tradition indicates that the

Wise Men arrived on January 6 (Epiphany)
and in many lands gifts are exchanged on that
date. In Spain children put out their shoes fill-
ed with straw on Epiphany Eve. The Wise Men
ride by during the night. The straw, for their
horses, is gone and gifts are in its place.

In Germany, the Christkind, a child mes-
senger for the infant Jesus, also brings gifts.
It is said that Martin Luther, the Protestant
leader, objected to the growing secularization
of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus and sought to
re-emphasize the direct connection of the
Christmas celebration with Christ’s birth. The
name of this messenger evolved into Kriss
Kringle, although that name is sometimes also
applied to Santa Claus.

CRECHE. The creche is an important sym-
bol of the religious meaning of Christmas. St.
Francis of Assisi is credited with originating
a reproduction of the manger, the Holy family
and the animals, shepherds and Wise Men in
1223. The Rev. Martindale says St. Francis
*laicized” what had been a church custom
and since then the creche has been used in
homes, squares and other places outside the
church.

CAROLS. Plays performed in cathedrals
during the Christmas holiday were set to
music. This practice spread outside the church
to give rise to carols. One of the best known,
The Twelve Nights of Christmas, was origin-
ally sung along with a dance on Twelfth Night,
followed by the eating of mince pies. (The
twelve days of Christmas are from the day of
Christ’s birth, December 25, to Epiphany, Jan-
uary 6).

In Latin America and in Aruba, the Agui-
naldos (carols in Spanish) are very popular
during the Christmas season.

CARDS. Christmas cards possibly stem from
gift exchanging at holiday time, but one auth-
ority believes this custom’s popularity began
with reforms in the British postal system when
cards were allowed to be sent at a uniform
penny rate throughout the United Kingdom.
A hand-colored lithographed card first was
sold in 1848 in England. It featured Christ-
mas merrymaking and wishes for a happy New
Year. The first American Christmas card, ac-
cording to some sources, appeared in 1875.

Children, You Can Make Your Own Manger Scene

With some colored pencils, wa-
ter paints, or magic markers, a
pair of scissors, and some white
glue, you can make the manger
scene on this page. (Do not use
paste or brown glue). Carefully
follow the easy instructions below.
You will get a lot of fun out of it,
as well as a beautiful and ornamen-
tal manger scene to put in your
room or under the Christmas tree.

First, color all the different
parts of the manger scene from
the inside pages of the Esso News)
Christmas Coloring Book: At the
bottom of each figure is a plain
strip. This is the "gluing strip”
and it is not necessary to color
this.

Carefully cut out all the figures. |
The white s-ace inside the arches
should also be cut away. Note
that the figures of the Holy Fam-
ily and the Herald Angel
printed inside the arches and
should also be cut out. Cut the
fronts and backs of all the figures

Corn Costumbernan di Pascu a Cuminza
E fiesta tipica di Pascu ta combine hopi costumber
y tradition e kerstboom, San Nicolas, luznan,
blachi di loranto, dunamento di regale, cantamento,
y hendenan ta manda otro carchi. Hopi di e costum-
bernan ey ta directamente relacionA cu nacemento di
Cristo y nan tin nan raiz den cumplimento cu cierto
obligacionnan di iglesia. Otro tambe ta basA riba cos-
tumbernan di pueblo, algun di nan tabata existi an-
E palabra Christmas (Pas-
cu), segun Rev. Martindale, ta bini di e palabra den
idioma Ingles anterior Cristes Maesse, misa di Cristu,
y promer bez cu nan a tende e number ey tabata na
anja 1038.
Un splicacion pakiko tin bez nan ta scirbi Christ-
Aunque nan no ta di
Europa segun e estacion di anja, cuminzando den e di
seis siglo. No obstante esey, na Merca e Puritanonan
di e colonia di Plymouth tabata contra tal celebra-
cion y nan a pasa un ley na 1659 cual ta boet cual-
kier hende cu celebra fiesta riba 25 di December.
Nan a revoca e ley na 1681, pero hopi tempu largu
habitantenan di Nueva Inglatera y e secta di Quaker
no Labatin ningun animo pa haci Pascu un dia di fes-
tividad. E colonistanan di Hulanda, mercenarionan di
Hessen, Alemania, durante Guera di Revolucion y
otro Europeonan cu a bini Merca a trece e tradition
di alegria riba e dia ey, di intercambia regal y tene
fiestanan riba e dia liber.
SAN NICOLAS. E colonistanan Hulandes a trece
pa Merca e tradition di celebra fiesta di San Nicolas,
den e di 17 siglo. E tradition aki tabata e precursor
di San Nicolas. San Nicolas tabata Obispo di Myra, y
segun nan ta conta e obispo a duna su tres rumannan
muher placa, asina ta cu nan bruidschat nan por a
hanja hende bin casa cu nan. Cierto version di e
storia to bisa cu e ruman muher di mas hoben, des-
Di tres anochi e oro p& a jega. San
castiga muchanan malucu, y den e otro man un sacu
bon humor, e tabata gusta fiesta y r tabata anima
hendenan pa sunchi otro bao di e mata cu jama
loranto.
Washington Irving, e autor Mericano, a duna un
description di San Nicolas di e colonistanan Hulandes
na 1809 y esey a haci6 masha popular na Merca. E
description di San Nicolas cu su binA den e poesia di
Clement C. Moore, E Anochi Promer cu Pascu, a

censia y mirra. Nan a recibi regal pa reciproca nan
tension. Tradicion ta conta nos cu e tres reynan a
jega dia 6 di Januari (Fiesta di Epifania) y den hopi
pais hendenan ta cambia regal e dia ey. Na Spanja
muchanan ta pone nan zapato pafor jena cu jerba
ariba e anochi promer cu Tres Rey. Durante anochi e
Tres Reynan ta core pasa tur caminda E jerba pa
nan cabainan a somenta, y na lugar di jerba e mu-
chanan ta hanja regalo.
Na Alemania e Christkind, un much cu ta mensa-
hero pa e yiu Cristo, tambe ta parti regal. Ta ser
bisi cu Martin Luther, e lider protestante, tabata
a trata di hala atencion di nobo riba e coneccion di-
recto entire celebration di Pascu y dia di nacemento
di Cristo. Nomber di e mensahero a bin bira Kriss
Kringle na Alemania; aunque tin bez nan ta usa e
number ey pa indica San Nicolas.
DORNAMENTO. Pino mata y taki tabata
worde usa durante fiestanan di Romanonan y otro
rito pagano.
noce te awor, probablemente ta bini di Alemannan.
pino y a transform na nootnan di oro, apel y luznan.
Historiadornan ta kere cu ta e soldanan di Hessia (na
Alemania) a plama e costumber na Merca durante
Guera di Revolucion, y colonistanan Aleman tabatin

colonistanan ey, kerstboom tabata na uso general na
Merca promer cu el a bira popular na Inglatera. Es-
poso Aleman di Reina Victoria, Principe Albert, a
introduce kerstboom na Inglatera na 1848. E color
berde di e mata y su takinan y color cork di e fruta-

de e tempu ey nan a bin us

CANCION.

CARCHI. Por ta cu e mandamento di carchi ta

How Christmas Customs Began
The typical Christmas combines many cus-
toms and traditions the tree, Santa Claus,
lights, mistletoe, gift-giving caroling, and
card-sending. Many of these customs are
directly related to the birth of Christ and
stem from church religious observances.
Others, though, have a basis in folk customs,
some present even before the birth of Jesus.
Scholars it should be noted, do not always
agree about how each of the present-day fam-
ily rituals developed into the Christmas tra-
dition.
Early Christians did not celebrate the birth-
day of Jesus as a holiday festival as it is
known today for several'hundred years after
He was born. The Rev. Cyril Martindale, a
Roman Catholic historian, has written that
such festivals were rejected by early Chris-
tians because they were associated with pagan
rituals. Later, the celebration of Christmas
was introduced to counteract the pagan feast
of the Sun-God held in Rome about December
25. The word Christmas, according to the Rev.
Martindale, is derived from the Old English,
Cristes Maesse (the mass of Christ) and was
first called by that name in 1038. The Dutch
word is Kerstmis. The Latin for Jesus' birth
is Dies Natalis, root of the Italian II Natale
and the French Noel.
An explanation of why Christmas is some-
times written Xmas is that "X" is the Greek
equivalent of the "ch" sound and the letter "X"
is taken to represent the word Christ. Although
the northern European Yule (or Jut) is of dis-
puted origin, one source says it may derive
from the Anglo-Saxon word for feast, geol.
Christmas was a seasonal celebration in
Europe from the sixth century on. Neverthe-
less, in the U.S. the Puritans of the Plymouth
Colony were opposed to its celebration and
passed a law in 1659 to fine anyone who feast-
ed on December 25. The law was repealed in
1681, but New Englanders and Quakers long
were reluctant to make Christmas a day of
festivity. The settlers from Holland, the Hes-
sian mercenaries in the Revolutionary War
and other Europeans who came to America
brought the traditions of merrymaking, gift-
giving and holiday festivities.
SANTA CLAUS. Dutch settlers brought the
tradition of St. Nicholas to America in the
17th century. His tradition was the forerunner
of Santa Claus. St. Nicholas was Archbishop
of Myra and was said to have given three
dowerless maiden sisters his money, thus mak-
ing them marriageable. One version of the
story is that the youngest, after her two sisters
had each received a gold purse dropped down
the chimney on successive nights, hung her
stocking in the fireplace hoping for her gift.
She received it the third night. St. Nicholas
also became the patron saint of children.
In Europe, St. Nicholas became a figure on
a white horse (or donkey) who wore the robes
of a bishop and sometimes carried a bunch of
twigs in one hand to punish naughty children
and a bag of presents in the other for good
children. The evolution of this gift-giver into
Santa Claus includes aspects of Father Christ-
mas, a folk figure long known in Northern
Europe. He wore a red robe trimmed in white
fur, was jovial, enjoyed merrymaking and en-
couraged kissing under the mistletoe.
Washington Irving, the American author,
described the St. Nicholas of the Dutch settlers
in 1809 and made him a popular figure in
America. The description of Santa Claus and
his reindeer in Clement C. Moore's poem, The
Night Before Christmas, imprinted an image
on the American public in 1823 of Santa as a
jovial, hearty gift-giver riding through the sky
in his sleigh.
DECORATIONS. Evergreens trees and
boughs were used in festivals in Roman
times and in other pagan rites. But the Christ-
mas tree as gen-
erally k no w n
probably was
o r i ginated by
the Germans. A
German sto r y
says the Christ-
kind chose the
fir and trans-
formed it with
gilded nuts, ap-
ples and lights.
Historians be -
lieve that Hes-
sian sold i e rs
spread the custom to America curing the Re-
volutionary War and that German settlers in
Pennsylvania had Christmas trees as early as
1746. Because of these settlers, the Christmas
tree was used in America before it became pop-
ular in England. The German husband of
Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, introduced it in
England in 1848. The green color of trees and
boughs and the red of the holly berry are sym-
bols of Christ. The red is for His passion and
death, and the green for everlasting life and
eternity.
Displaying a tree in a window or using light-
ed decorations is a practice derived from the
custom of putting candles in the window to
light the Christkind's way. A star, of course
symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, which guid-
ed the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ.
GIFT EXCHANGING. Exchanging gifts at
Christmas follows the example of the Wise
Men who brought gifts to the Christ child -
gold, frankincense and myrrh. They received
gifts in return. Tradition indicates that the
Wise Men arrived on January 6 (Epiphany)
and in many lands gifts are exchanged on that
date. In Spain children put out their shoes fill-
ed with straw on Epiphany Eve. The Wise Men
ride by during the night. The straw, for their
horses, is gone and gifts are in its place.
In Germany, the Ch'ristkind, a child mes-
senger for the infant Jesus, also brings gifts.
It is said that Martin Luther, the Protestant
leader, objected to the growing secularization
of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus and sought to
re-emphasize the direct connection of the
Christmas celebration with Christ's birth. The
name of this messenger evolved into Kriss
Kringle, although that name is sometimes also
applied to Santa Claus.
CRECHE. The creche is an important sym-
bol of the religious meaning of Christmas. St.
Francis of Assisi is credited with originating
a reproduction of the manger, the Holy family
and the animals, shepherds and Wise Men in
1223. The Rev. Martindale says St. Francis
laicizedd" what had been a church custom
and since then the creche has been used in
homes, squares and other places outside the
church.
CAROLS. Plays performed in cathedrals
during the Christmas holiday were set to
music. This practice spread outside the church
to give rise to carols. One of the best known,
The Twelve Nights of Christmas, was origin-
ally sung along with a dance on Twelfth Night,
followed by the eating of mince pies. (The
twelve days of Christmas are from the day of
Christ's birth, December 25, to Epiphany, Jan-
uary 6).
In Latin America and in Aruba, the Agui-
naldos (carols in Spanish) are very popular
during the Christmas season.
CARDS. Christmas cards possibly stem from
gift exchanging at holiday time, but one auth-
ority believes this custom's popularity began
with reforms in the British postal system when
cards were allowed to be sent at a uniform
penny rate throughout the United Kingdom.
A hand-colored lithographed card first was
sold in 1848 in England. It featured Christ-
mas merrymaking and wishes for a happy New
Year. The first American Christmas card, ac-
cording to some sources, appeared in 1875.

Special Buoy Installed Off Savaneta
Measures Sea Current, Wind Conditions

A special buoy has been installed by Lago west of the entrance
to San Nicolas Harbor about one quarter of a mile off the reef}
at Savaneta. On the reef nearby, an instrument shack has been
built which is connected to current and wave sensoring equip-

vision of Lago engineers in co-
operation with Government
Harbor authorities.

The buoy and instruments
will assist in determining sea
movements and wind conditions
over a period of about one
year. They will help determine
a suitable location where off-
shore mooring facilities might
possibly be built in the future.

The buoy off Savaneta has
been painted yellow and will
have a white light at night.

How Christmas Customs Began

The typical Christmas combines many cus-
toms and traditions — the tree, Santa Claus,
lights, mistletoe, gift-giving caroling, and
card-sending. Many of these customs are
directly related to the birth of Christ and
stem from church religious observances.
Others, though, have a basis in folk customs,
some present even before the birth of Jesus.
Scholars it should be noted, do not always
agree about how each of the present-day fam-
ily rituals developed into the Christmas tra-
dition.

Early Christians did not celebrate the birth-
day of Jesus as a holiday festival as it is
known today for several hundred years after
He was born. The Rev. Cyril Martindale, a
Roman Catholic historian, has written that
such festivals were rejected by early Chris-
tians because they were associated with pagan
rituals. Later, the celebration of Christmas
was introduced to counteract the pagan feast
of the Sun-God held in Rome about December
25. The word Christmas, according to the Rev.
Martindale, is derived from the Old English,
Cristes Maesse (the mass of Christ) and was
first called by that name in 1038. The Dutch
word is Kerstmis. The Latin for Jesus’ birth
is Dies Natalis, root of the Italian Jl Natale
and the French Noel.

An explanation of why Christmas is some-
times written Xmas is that ”X” is the Greek
equivalent of the ’ch” sound and the letter ”X”’
is taken to represent the word Christ. Although
the northern European Yule (or Jul) is of dis-
puted origin, one source says it may derive
from the Anglo-Saxon word for feast, geol.

Christmas was a seasonal celebration in
Europe from the sixth century on. Neverthe-
less, in the U.S. the Puritans of the Plymouth
Colony were opposed to its celebration and
passed a law in 1659 to fine anyone who feast-
ed on December 25. The law was repealed in
1681, but New Englanders and Quakers long
were reluctant to make Christmas a day of
festivity. The settlers from Holland, the Hes-
sian mercenaries in the Revolutionary War
and other Europeans who came to America
brought the traditions of merrymaking, gift-
giving and holiday festivities.

SANTA CLAUS. Dutch settlers brought the
tradition of St. Nicholas to America in the
17th century. His tradition was the forerunner
of Santa Claus. St. Nicholas was Archbishop
of Myra and was said to have given three
dowerless maiden sisters his money, thus mak-

ing them marriageable. One version of the
story is that the youngest, after her two sisters
had each received a gold purse dropped down
the chimney on successive nights, hung her
stocking in the fireplace hoping for her gift.
She received it the third night. St. Nicholas
also became the patron saint of children.

In Europe, St. Nicholas became a figure on
a white horse (or donkey) who wore the robes
of a bishop and sometimes carried a bunch of
twigs in one hand to punish naughty children
and a bag of presents in the other for good
children. The evolution of this gift-giver into
Santa Claus includes aspects of Father Christ-
mas, a folk figure long known in Northern
Europe. He wore a red robe trimmed in white
fur, was jovial, enjoyed merrymaking and en-
couraged kissing under the mistletoe.

Washington Irving, the American author,
described the St. Nicholas of the Dutch settlers
in 1809 and made him a popular figure in
America. The description of Santa Claus and
his reindeer in Clement C. Moore’s poem, The
Night Before Christmas, imprinted an image
on the American public in 1823 of Santa as a
jovial, hearty gift-giver riding through the sky
in his sleigh.

DECORATIONS. Evergreens — trees and
boughs — were used in festivals in Roman
times and in other pagan rites. But the Christ-
mas tree as gen-
erally known
probably was
originated by
the Germans. A
German story
says the Christ-
kind chose the
fir and trans-
formed it with
gilded nuts, ap-
ples and lights.

Historians be -

lieve that Hes-

siansoldiers 4

spread the custom to America during the Re-
volutionary War and that German settlers in
Pennsylvania had Christmas trees as early as
1746. Because of these settlers, the Christmas
tree was used in America before it became pop-
ular in England. The German husband of
Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, introduced it in
England in 1848. The green color of trees and
boughs and the red of the holly berry are sym-
bols of Christ. The red is for His passion and
death, and the green for everlasting life and
eternity.

Displaying a tree in a window or using light-
ed decorations is a practice derived from the
custom of putting candles in the window to
light the Christkind’s way. A star, of course
symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, which guid-
ed the Wise Men to the birthplace of Christ.

GIFT EXCHANGING. Exchanging gifts at
Christmas follows the example of the Wise
Men who brought gifts to the Christ child —
gold, frankincense and myrrh. They received
gifts in return. Tradition indicates that the

Wise Men arrived on January 6 (Epiphany)
and in many lands gifts are exchanged on that
date. In Spain children put out their shoes fill-
ed with straw on Epiphany Eve. The Wise Men
ride by during the night. The straw, for their
horses, is gone and gifts are in its place.

In Germany, the Christkind, a child mes-
senger for the infant Jesus, also brings gifts.
It is said that Martin Luther, the Protestant
leader, objected to the growing secularization
of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus and sought to
re-emphasize the direct connection of the
Christmas celebration with Christ’s birth. The
name of this messenger evolved into Kriss
Kringle, although that name is sometimes also
applied to Santa Claus.

CRECHE. The creche is an important sym-
bol of the religious meaning of Christmas. St.
Francis of Assisi is credited with originating
a reproduction of the manger, the Holy family
and the animals, shepherds and Wise Men in
1223. The Rev. Martindale says St. Francis
*laicized” what had been a church custom
and since then the creche has been used in
homes, squares and other places outside the
church.

CAROLS. Plays performed in cathedrals
during the Christmas holiday were set to
music. This practice spread outside the church
to give rise to carols. One of the best known,
The Twelve Nights of Christmas, was origin-
ally sung along with a dance on Twelfth Night,
followed by the eating of mince pies. (The
twelve days of Christmas are from the day of
Christ’s birth, December 25, to Epiphany, Jan-
uary 6).

In Latin America and in Aruba, the Agui-
naldos (carols in Spanish) are very popular
during the Christmas season.

CARDS. Christmas cards possibly stem from
gift exchanging at holiday time, but one auth-
ority believes this custom’s popularity began
with reforms in the British postal system when
cards were allowed to be sent at a uniform
penny rate throughout the United Kingdom.
A hand-colored lithographed card first was
sold in 1848 in England. It featured Christ-
mas merrymaking and wishes for a happy New
Year. The first American Christmas card, ac-
cording to some sources, appeared in 1875.

Children, You Can Make Your Own Manger Scene

With some colored pencils, wa-
ter paints, or magic markers, a
pair of scissors, and some white
glue, you can make the manger
scene on this page. (Do not use
paste or brown glue). Carefully
follow the easy instructions below.
You will get a lot of fun out of it,
as well as a beautiful and ornamen-

room or under the Christmas tree.

First, color all the different
parts of the manger scene from

bottom of each figure is a plain
strip. This is the "gluing strip”
and it is not necessary to color
this.

Celebrando Pascu di Nacemento

5 o ta dispuesto pa lubida loke bo a haci pa otro
hende, y corda solamente loke otro hende a haci pa bo;
pa haci manera bo no sabi kiko mundu debe bo, y pensa
solamente riba loke abo mes debe mundu; pa pone bo
derechonan te patras aya, pone bo obligacionnan den
simiya di felicidad — bo ta dispuesto pa haci e cosnan ey
maske ta pa un dia? Anto bo por celebra Pascu.

Bo ta dispuesto pa baha bo cabez y considera necesidad-
nan y deseonan di muchanan chiquito; di recorda com
zwak y solitario hendenan di edad ta;...... di tene den bo
memoria cosnan cu otro hende mester tene den nan cura-
tunan carinjoso y laga porta habri pa nan — bo ta dis-
celebra Pascu.

Bo ta dispuesto di kere cu amor ta e cos di mas fuerte
den mundu — mas poderoso cu odio, mas fuerte cu cos
malu, mas fuerte cu morto — y cu e bida bendiciona cu
a cuminza na Betlehem mil nuebe cien anja pasa ta
imagen y claridad di Amor Eterno? Anto lo bo por cele-
bra Pascu.

Keeping Christmas

re you willing to forget what you have done for other
people, and to remember what other people have done for you; to ignore
what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your
rights in the background, and your duties in the middle distance, and
your chances to do a little more than your duty in the‘foreground: to close
your book of complaints against the Fa | the universe, and
look around you for a place where you can sow a feW:seeds of happiness
— are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep

Christmas.

Are you willing to

ness and loneliness of’

people who are growing

old; to bear in mind the
things that other people
have to bear in their
hearts; to try to under-
stand what those who
live in the same house
with you really want, re nba BO
without waiting for them to tell you; to trim your lamp so ae iis ay aes
more light and less smoke, and to carry it in front ‘so that your shadow
will fall behind you; to make a grave for your ugly eee Peat
for your kindly feelings, with the gate open — are you willing to do these
things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world
—stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death—and that the
blessed life which began in Bethlehem nineteen hundred Vertes ago is the

image and brightness of the Eternal Love? Then you can keep Christmas.
And if you keep it for a day, why not always?

But you can never keep it alone...
