An Aid in Molding a Career

Since it was started in 1955, the Lago Summer Training Pro-
gram has helped more than 260 students. It was conceived to
give industrial experience to students during their vacation.

The program enables students to apply in practice what they
study at college. This not only develops the students’ proficien-
cy. It makes possible understanding of many things that are
usually not taught at school.

The training program also has a direct benefit to the com-
munity since it helps return more responsible citizens to the
community when they finish college.

This year again, for the twelfth consecutive year, Lago
sponsoring some sixteen students who are undertaking a variety
of assignments. These assignments include the complete admin-
istration of the Summer Training Program, supervision of psy-
chological testing of workers and assistance in the mechaniza-
tion of the company’s property system. Others are engaged in

analysis of printing plates, and handling the administration of

CYI work. Most of the assignments involve frequent contacts

with employees.

For some students, naturally, the assignments may be more
rewarding than for others. It’s not always possible to assign stu-
dents to a job that is directly related to their major field of
study. In any case, the work experience gives them a better in-
sight about industry, while building up their sense of responsi-
bility.

As PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon commented, ’’the program is
intended to supplement school training and also to give students
a taste of possible future careers.”

In one case, the training actually helped the student to change
to another career.

to di verano a juda mas cu 260 estudiante.

Esaki no solamente ta desarolja
proficiencia di e estudiante, sino e ta haci posibel tambe com-
prendemento di hopi cos cu generalmente no ta worde sinja na)
school.

E programa di entrenamento aki tambe tin su beneficio direc-|

E anja aki trobe, pa di diezdos anja tras di otro, Lago ta pa-
encargonan cu nan tin ta inclui administracion completo di e
Programa di Entrenamiento di Verano, supervision riba test-
mento psicoldgico di trahadornan, y ayudo den mecanizacion di
compania su sistema di tene buki di su propiedadnan. Otro ta
encarga cu scirbimento di articulonan di reserva pa Esso News,
haciendo caleulacion di costo di cliché, y atendiendo cu trabao
necesario pa Coin Your Ideas. Mayoria di e encargonan ta trece
contacto frequente entre estudiante y empleadonan.

Pa cierto estudiante, naturalmente, e encargonan ta mas gra-
tificamente cu pa otronan. No tur ora ta posibel pa encarga un
ta duna nan mihor bista riba industria, mientras e ta aumenta

These include: the faster train-

Although only 6.85 inches of

currence of spots on the sun’s
surface. Max has also taken
pictures of sunspots.

Sunspots are dark areas on
the sun. These sunspots occur
more frequently in specific per-
iods approximately every 11
years. This period is called a
sunspot cycle. Heavy sunspots
can be seen with naked eyes,

BUT you must use dark glasses|

to protect your eyes.
Study Sunspots and Weather

In their study, Ed and Max
compared the occurrence of sun-
spots with the weather condi-
tions in Aruba, and discovered
something very interesting.

The two men plotted a graph

of the rainfall as recorded by}

Lago over the last 25 years a-
gainst a chart of the sunspot
cycles. The chart revealed a de-
finite relationship between the
two. Years of maximum sun-
spot activity coincided with

little rainfall (1936, 1947, and|

1958 - see chart).

The two also observed that!
the third year before and the
third year after sunspot peaks
usually were years with rela-
tively heavy rainfall (1933,

1938, 1944, 1955/56 and 1961 -|

see chart).

According to Ed and Max,
this year, 1966, is the third year
before the next peak of sunspot

average for Aruba is 18.37

A total of 6.85 inches of rain-
fall registered through June
does not seem discouraging
when compared with previous
years of heavy rainfall (1944,
1955, 1961 - see chart). The

As a radio amateur, Max has

From early youth through adulthood, the student constantly
is taught new things to prepare him or her for a future career.

But people are different. And the learning process is not the

To assist the slow learners, there are two special schcols in|

receive training to help them

CYI work. Most of the assignments involve frequent contacts

with employees.

For some students, naturally, the assignments may be more
rewarding than for others. It’s not always possible to assign stu-
dents to a job that is directly related to their major field of
study. In any case, the work experience gives them a better in-
sight about industry, while building up their sense of responsi-
bility.

As PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon commented, ’’the program is
intended to supplement school training and also to give students
a taste of possible future careers.”

In one case, the training actually helped the student to change
to another career.

to di verano a juda mas cu 260 estudiante.

Esaki no solamente ta desarolja
proficiencia di e estudiante, sino e ta haci posibel tambe com-
prendemento di hopi cos cu generalmente no ta worde sinja na)
school.

E programa di entrenamento aki tambe tin su beneficio direc-|

E anja aki trobe, pa di diezdos anja tras di otro, Lago ta pa-
encargonan cu nan tin ta inclui administracion completo di e
Programa di Entrenamiento di Verano, supervision riba test-
mento psicoldgico di trahadornan, y ayudo den mecanizacion di
compania su sistema di tene buki di su propiedadnan. Otro ta
encarga cu scirbimento di articulonan di reserva pa Esso News,
haciendo caleulacion di costo di cliché, y atendiendo cu trabao
necesario pa Coin Your Ideas. Mayoria di e encargonan ta trece
contacto frequente entre estudiante y empleadonan.

Pa cierto estudiante, naturalmente, e encargonan ta mas gra-
tificamente cu pa otronan. No tur ora ta posibel pa encarga un
ta duna nan mihor bista riba industria, mientras e ta aumenta

currence of spots on the sun’s
surface. Max has also taken
pictures of sunspots.

Sunspots are dark areas on
the sun. These sunspots occur
more frequently in specific per-
iods approximately every 11
years. This period is called a
sunspot cycle. Heavy sunspots
can be seen with naked eyes,

BUT you must use dark glasses|

to protect your eyes.
Study Sunspots and Weather

In their study, Ed and Max
compared the occurrence of sun-
spots with the weather condi-
tions in Aruba, and discovered
something very interesting.

The two men plotted a graph

of the rainfall as recorded by}

Lago over the last 25 years a-
gainst a chart of the sunspot
cycles. The chart revealed a de-
finite relationship between the
two. Years of maximum sun-
spot activity coincided with

little rainfall (1936, 1947, and|

1958 - see chart).

The two also observed that!
the third year before and the
third year after sunspot peaks
usually were years with rela-
tively heavy rainfall (1933,

1938, 1944, 1955/56 and 1961 -|

see chart).

According to Ed and Max,
this year, 1966, is the third year
before the next peak of sunspot

when compared with previous

Helps Students Become Useful Citizens, « =

From early youth through adulthood, the student constantly
is taught new things to prepare him or her for a future career.

But people are different. And the learning process is not the
same for every pupil.

To assist the slow learners, there are two special schcols in|

Aruba where these children can
receive training to help them
become contributing members
of the community. At these
schools, the teacher, who is

learning situation, gives indivi-|

This is Gerold’s first exper-

to review physics and help other

Before attending college in
September of 1964, Gerold

Two disabling injuries, cne in
April and one in May, brought
the company’s frequency rate

|1965, the frequency rate was
1.68 with 8 disabling injuries.

Total on-the-job accident ex-

was 67: in 61 cases the em-
ployee returned to work imme-
diately; 4 received restricted
duty, and 2 sustained disabling
injuries. This compares with
127 for 1965.

Off the job, our employees
were safer. For the first half
of the year, only 39 off-the-job
