The program runs from June 27 to August 19, 1966. Ap- plications must be turned in be- fore June 1. Forms are now available at the Training Divi- sion. The program is open to child- ren of Aruba residents who are enrolled at an accredited col- lege. They must have success- fully completed at least one year of college. Applications will be handled on a first-come, first- served basis depending on avail- able job training openings. Because of the limited oppor- tunities, enrollment preference will be given to Aruban students to the extent possible. A student grant-in-aid of Fls. 225 per four-week period will be provided. The program's obpective is to provide actual job experience in the student's major area. Na Ju- cas, phone 2048. F. V. Brooks I A Few Moments of Caution A Lifetime of Happiness I'am a safety adviser. Part of my job is to tell people about the importance of wear- ing personal protective equipment when a job requires this. I have often advised people to wear safety goggles, explaining to them the terrible misfortune of being blind. The other day I decided to find out for myself just how handi- capped a blind person is. I painted a pair of goggles black and tried to do some of the simple, everyday things. Believe me, you'll never know just how difficult it is to do some of the easiest and simplest things without your sight...... little things like putting on your shirt, or getting a drink of water. Sure, I've been talking to people about the importance of wear- ing safety goggles whenever there is the slightest hazard to the eye, but even I never fully realized just how precious my eyes are to me. After the experience I went through, I decided that they de- serve the best protection I can give them. The few seconds it takes to put on a pair of safety goggles are well worth the years of happier living. I'm sold more than ever before on the value of safety goggles. But, maybe because I'm a safety adviser the thing that worried me most was...... YOU! What about you? Are you taking chances with your future health and happiness by neglecting to wear eye protection? What would you do if you were blind? On page 3 you'll see what happened to me when I tried the blindness test. Werleman, Publications Asst. Hydrocracking Process Operating Now At Humble Oil Refinery In Montana A Standard Oil (New Jersey) hydrocracking process, con- sidered the most efficient in converting heavier petroleum liquids into high quality motor gasolines, went on stream for the first time in July at the Billings, Mont., refinery of Humble Oil & Refining Company, an affiliate. The process, which has at- tracted industry-wide interest, is known as Unicracking-JHC. The letters stand for Jersey Hydrocracking. Esso Research developed the process in coope- ration with Union Oil Company of California. Commercial use of the proc- ess has started at a time when the oil industry foresees at least a 25 per cent increase in the demand for gasoline by 1972, when an estimated 26 mil- lion more cars will be on the loads. Refineries expect hydro- cracking to help them raise even higher the percentage of petroleum that they can turn into gasoline. An unusual feature of the new unit is its ability to turn 100 barrels of feedstock into 120 barrels of gasoline stocks. The unit produces more by sim- ultaneously cracking the feed- stock and combining this crack- ed material with hydrogen. The new process uses improv- ed catalysts that allow reduced pressures and economically fea- sible operations. It also uses cheap hydrogen-rich gases, which are available in growing quantity as the by-products of other modern refinery process- es. The hydrocracker takes stub- born petroleum fractions that resist catalytic cracking and heats them to temperatures ranging from 500 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Then it mixes these fractions with hydrogen-rich gas, squeezes them to pressures of 500 to 2,000 pounds and brings them in contact with an extremely active catalyst. During this treatment several chemical reactions take place that crack and break up the re- latively large hydrocarbon mo- lecules of the heavier petroleum fractions and rearrange them in the more valuable, smaller and lighter molecules of gasoline. The affiliate company start- ed up a second Unicracking- JHC unit at Baton Rouge, La., late last year. A third unit will be built at Baytown, Texas, by the middle of this year. Esso Research and Union Oil have recently granted the Atlantic Refining Company a license to use the new process in a Uni- cracking JHC hydrocracking plant it will build. Process Training Starts For Oil Movements Men Eearly this month, an accele- rated process training program began for some 220 men of Oil Movements. Every three weeks a new group of 12 employees of the Division will start the course. Charged with the pro- gram are Joe D. Midwikis, pro- cess training advisor, and Trev J. Rhydderch, training coordin- ator for Oil Movements. The program is intended to increase the process know-how of the Oil Movements personnel. Although they are not working in refinery units, they must be familiar with their process func- tions. They should also have some knowledge of chemistry, shipping and specifications. The training, which is given from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ad- ministration Building, consists of classroom instruction with some field practice. FIVE PROMOTIONS (Continued from page 1) Mr. Martis began in Lago Police in March, 1954, after seven years with Esso Trans- portation Company. He has twelve years with the Lago Police. Il e Geouiuogcai Survey added that the collected water could be funneled into the ground through pits to raise the area's water table, as done in the Esso Research experiment, or used at once. Esso Research started the ex- periment early last year in co- operation with the Geological Survey and the post engineer at the missile range. One tract was left in its natural state and the other was stripped of vege- tation, then sprayed with a thin coat of asphalt. Automatic rainfall recording devices measured how much of the area's annual precipitation ot about eight inches flowed in- to the collection pits for each tract. The results show that the coated tract provided 130,000 gallons a year per acre. Most of the water that fell on the un- treated tract either evaporated or passed into sparse grase and cther low-value desert vegeta- tion. Advantages The potential results of using asphalt-covered land include new range areas, increased run- off for rivers and replenished urban water supplies. The as- phalt would also retard erosion and cut to a minimum the sedi- ment that harvested water could carry into cisterns or re- servoirs. Esso Research scientists have estimated that a paved area six by nine miles could harvest enough water from an annual rainfall of 15 inches to provide eight billion gallons a year, enough to supply a city of 100,000 people or to irrigate 6.000 acres of land with three feet of water per acre. The cost to carry out such projects would depend on the features of the terrain, the amount of rainfall, the size of the storage facilities, and the stripping of the vegetation be- fore coating. Once an area is coated, however, the life of the project would be infinite as long as the area is recoated when necessary. su school na Congreso Mundial di Exhibicion di Educacion di Ingenieria na Chicago. Esso Caracas, Is First Creole Tanker Equipped With Butane Deck Tanks Esso Caracas made her ap- pearance in the San Nicolas Harbor on April 6 with a new structure on her deck. The Creole tanker had just returned from drydocking in the U.S. where two special tanks for .ransporting liquefied petroleum gas were installed on deck. In addition to crude cargo, the tanker will now be able to transport some 2900 barrels of liquefied butane. Jersey Standard Completes Movie About Man's Battle Against Famine Recently Jersey Standard completed filming a motion picture about Man's race with hunger and famine and his chances of losing against today's amounting odds. "Life in the Balance" is the title and theme of the half-hour film, and a world-wide effort to tip the balance in Man's favor is growths in almost every coun- try. The world's three billion mouths to feed today will be six billion in another genera- tion, the film warns. its plot. Color photography from se- ven countries on three contin- ents and on islands of the Far East draw the battle lines for this historic fight against hun- ger. The narration by film star Orson Welles dramatizes suc- cesses and failures in the age- old contest now in a critical stage. No simple solutions seem pos- sible, but "Life in the Balance" documents the science and skills the Jersey organization applies to agriculture's dilemma. Oil is its weapon and the battle- crops became Man's major food source. Too much or to little in unbalanced ratios have liter- ally put life in the balance for whole continents. Hunger, malnutrition and dis- ease are now grim realities for almost half the human race. Threats of famine are brought desperately close by population Over the centuries, man's mismanagement of land has produced vast deserts where crops once thrived. His harvest today is shifting sand which is not only nonproductive but a constant threat of burial for adjacent farmlands. Where sands are no problem, primitive farming methods and depleted soils frequently limit grounds range from the Esso crop yields and enslave farm- Research Center in Linden to ers in toil and disappointments tropical rice fields in the Philip- that have been their lot for pines. thousands of years. "Millions of Half A World Away the world's farmers still work Half a world away, another in ways familiar to Neolithic research team headed by Tad Les, of Esso Research Ltd., in England, is shown making head- way by pouring oil on North Africa's sea of sand. Water, the team found, is just a few inches down, but nothing will grow on a land in motion. An oil spray on the surface anchors the sand, and young trees are already thriving by the millions in the now station- ary dunes. Irrigation and fertilizer will eventually reclaim land gone to waste since Roman times. In sharply drawn contrasts between bountiful and blighted lands, the film shows that na- ture and man himself have brought on the food crisis. Man's initiative and genius are portrayed as the hopes for so- lutions that can avert disaster. Soil, sun and rain the es- sentials of agriculture have helped and hindered in the struggle for food ever since man," the film observes. Insects and blights, growing more resistant to sprays, exact a toll which hungry people can no longer afford. Together these devour or spoil almost one-third of the crops man cul- tivates. "Life in the Balance" is a warning of peril as well as a record of food problems and the progress of the Jersey or- ganization. "Approaching fam- ine is a fact," the documentary concludes. "But so is our will to survive. Scientists every- where are finding answers. We must apply them fast. It is our obligation to create a harvest big enough for all mankind." The film was produced by Equinox Films, Inc., with Gene Searchinger, its head, serving as producer-director and Jeri Sopanen its photographer. An original music score, composed and directed by David Diamond, reflects the film's mood. PRECISION WELDING is checked with a WELDMENTO DI precision to worde contro- square by Gabriel Ruiz.
