SAFETY RECORD

(Continued from page 1)

stripped crude tank at No. 10 Vis-
breaker.

In safety competition, Lago com-
petes with 14 other major refineries.
The classification is listed as "En-
tire Companies Group A Working
More Than Three Million Manhours.”
Last year’s winner was Humble Oil
& Refining Company, with 1.37
frequency rate. Figures through Oc-
tober indicate that the average rate
for the fifteen companies stood at
3.60 or more than three disabling in-
juries per million manhours higher
than the Lago rate.

The present Lago record for work
days without a disabling injury was
set in 1961 when 231 days were re-
gistered before the first mishap.

Several new innovations, added to
the already far-reaching safety pro-
gram, were introduced in 1963, con-
tributing to the new record.

a

The inauguration of a film truck
boosted the total attendance in the
off-the-job safety program and sent
it 12,500 in 1962 to
over 17,500. The film attendance
averages more than 350 persons
showing, and the truck continues to
operate with a full schedule

There greater distribu-
tion of safety materials and inform-
ation to the radio stations.

The greatest toward
the new record, is the
continuing alertness and safety con-
ciousness of Lago employees and
management. The all important at-
titude has been bolstered by the use
of safety talks, safety slips, a revis-
ed edition of the Work Permits
Manual, proper safety equipment and
proper job performance methods.

Born to Croes Family

The new year was twelve hours
and fourteen minutes old when
ehor Stork made his first Lago
visit of 1964. It was at 6:14 p.m.,
Jan. 1, that a daughter, Lesbia
Millin, was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Pablo Croes. The new arrival
weighed six pounds and thirteen
ounces.

Mr. Croes works in

For a while it appeared there
might be a repeat of last year
when for the first time in eight-
een years Lago Hospital wasn’t

But despite the heavy holiday
air traffic and high winds, the
trusty old bird helped to get 1964
off to a joyful start for the Croes

Esso Research Produces
New Covering To Protect
Pipes From Corrosion

Technical
Me |

Pipelines carrying petroleum and}
natural can now be protected
from corrosion for the lifetime of

the pipe by a new coating which it-
self is made from oil. The product
was developed by Esso Research and
Engineering Co. |

Industry is now spending some
,000,000 a year in pipeline coat-

|ings, most of which are presently
made of coal tar. Coatings of the

new material are only one-tenth as
thick as coal tar types and during
more than five years of laboratory
jand field testing have shown better
corrosion resistance

The product is derived from the
|petroleum gases butadience and
|styrene and is known as "buton.”
In the application of the coating,
lengths of pipe — usually forty-foot
sections — are coated with the resin |
and heat cured in a unique process
that permits rapid, multicoat appli-|
cation. The resin application and |
curing sequence and conditions are |
automatically controlled to obtain |
clean, free coating of outstanding |
|durability and impact resistance. |

Pipeline construction in the Free
| World this year is estimated at}
| 28,461 miles. Most lines range from |
|two to twelve inches in diameter,
jalthough the big twenty-four and
thirty-inch lines account for more
| than 4500 miles. This is the largest
| Single market which would be af-
fected by the new development.

Grants of nearly $2 million, the
Education Foundation since

it was established

Helps Meet Need for Educated Manpower

largest annual program of the Esso
in 1955, have been

announced by M. J. Rathbone, chairman of the Foundation. The cur-

| rent grants are for the 1963-1964 academic year.

By the end of the current academic year, the Foundation, since its

founding, will have made grants tot-

aling more than $15 million.

The Foundation is supported by

| Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) |

- Humble Oil

Jersey Pro-
duction Research Company, Esso In-
ternational Inc., Humble Pipe Line
Company, and Esso Standard East-
ern, Inc

In this year’s program, unrestrict-
ed grants are the largest in number.
They are, in the opinion of many
educators, particularly helpful to
colleges and universities. To make
them even more meaningful, the
Foundation has raised the scale.
Previously, unrestricted grants were
in the amounts of $2000, $3500 and
$5000. This year they are $3000,
$5000 and $7500.

The total amount of $750,000 in
unrestricted grants is essentially the
same as the year before. The money
will be distributed among 170 in-
stitutions, somewhat fewer than in
previous years. Thirty-two additio-
nal colleges will benefit
$50,000 grant to the United Negro
College Fund.

and six of its affiliates

Development

Other Foundation grants this year
will include sixty-three capital and
development grants amounting to
more than $500,000, thirty-eight en-
gineering and science grants totaling
$170,000, and twenty-two miscella-
neous grants amounting to more
than $250,000.

In commenting on this year's pro-
gram, Mr. Rathbone said that the
Foundation is continuing its efforts
to help meet the tremendous need
for education opportunities and the
demands for more and better edu-
cated manpower.

Announced recently was a_ special
capital grant allotting $400,000 to
the United Negro College Develop-

under a/

ment Fund in amounts of $100,000
over the next four years.

Among special programs receiving
|Esso Education funds is the Harvard
University-Newton School Project.
This is an experiment to train
teachers in introducing economics to
high school students through the use
of actual case studies of American
business firms. It has aroused much
interest in educational circles, and
several school systems are consider-
ing the adoption of the new ap-
proach.

The Esso Education Foundation
also sponsors individual aid to edu-
cation by matching personal contri-
butions, up to $1000 a year, by em-
ployees of Jersey Standard and its
affiliates to institutions of higher
| learning in the U.S.

Yawl Kochat AnchorsHere
On “Long Voyage” Home.
When Started July 18

The yawl Kochat sat silhouetted
against the late afternoon sun, moor-
ed just behind the Bali restaurant in
Oranjestad, its shadowed rigging
giving the appearance of so many
charred stick matches. Around it,
the breakers rolled like bubbling cot-
ton.

On board, crewman Dick Pohe,
tanned by rays of numerous ocean
suns, performed the traditional sea-
man’s bathing ritual: a pan of water
held above the head, a split second
of anticipation, then the curious bap-
tisim that it is said onl llors can
fully appreciate or understand.

The forty-foot Kochat is captained
by John Evans, a fifty-eight-year
old Englishman who, for several
years now, has been living in New
Zealand — when he’s not at sea. Mr.
Pohe, a youthful 3-year-old New
Zealander, has been with Mr. Evans
since April, 1960.

Currently, the pair is heading for
home part in New Zealand. In 1957,
the last time the Kochat dropped
anchor in Aruba, it was also headed
home after an extended journey to
sea. |

This trip began July 18, and they
have ventured to such ports of call
as England, Portugal, Spain, Gibral-

The longest pull was a twenty-two
day voyage from the Canary Islands
to Barbados.

Ask Mr. Pohe what the plans are
after docking in New Zealand and
he’ll tell you he wants to "relax a
bit, visit some, and then make ready
for the next trip — whenever the
captain decides it will be.

SAFETY RECORD

(Continued from page 1)

stripped crude tank at No. 10 Vis-
breaker.

In safety competition, Lago com-
petes with 14 other major refineries.
The classification is listed as "En-
tire Companies Group A Working
More Than Three Million Manhours.”
Last year’s winner was Humble Oil
& Refining Company, with 1.37
frequency rate. Figures through Oc-
tober indicate that the average rate
for the fifteen companies stood at
3.60 or more than three disabling in-
juries per million manhours higher
than the Lago rate.

The present Lago record for work
days without a disabling injury was
set in 1961 when 231 days were re-
gistered before the first mishap.

Several new innovations, added to
the already far-reaching safety pro-
gram, were introduced in 1963, con-
tributing to the new record.

a

The inauguration of a film truck
boosted the total attendance in the
off-the-job safety program and sent
it 12,500 in 1962 to
over 17,500. The film attendance
averages more than 350 persons
showing, and the truck continues to
operate with a full schedule

There greater distribu-
tion of safety materials and inform-
ation to the radio stations.

The greatest toward
the new record, is the
continuing alertness and safety con-
ciousness of Lago employees and
management. The all important at-
titude has been bolstered by the use
of safety talks, safety slips, a revis-
ed edition of the Work Permits
Manual, proper safety equipment and
proper job performance methods.

It may be that the idea has al-

employees being aware of the
possibilities and developing the
ideas. For their efforts in making
their company efficient, safe and
competitive, the Coin-Your-Ideas

Born to Croes Family

The new year was twelve hours
and fourteen minutes old when
ehor Stork made his first Lago
visit of 1964. It was at 6:14 p.m.,
Jan. 1, that a daughter, Lesbia
Millin, was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Pablo Croes. The new arrival
weighed six pounds and thirteen
ounces.

For a while it appeared there

But despite the heavy holiday
air traffic and high winds, the

Esso Research Produces
New Covering To Protect
Pipes From Corrosion

Technical
Me |

Pipelines carrying petroleum and}
natural can now be protected
from corrosion for the lifetime of

the pipe by a new coating which it-
self is made from oil. The product
was developed by Esso Research and
Engineering Co. |

Industry is now spending some
,000,000 a year in pipeline coat-

|ings, most of which are presently
made of coal tar. Coatings of the

new material are only one-tenth as
thick as coal tar types and during
more than five years of laboratory
jand field testing have shown better
corrosion resistance

The product is derived from the
|petroleum gases butadience and
|styrene and is known as "buton.”
In the application of the coating,
lengths of pipe — usually forty-foot
sections — are coated with the resin |
and heat cured in a unique process
that permits rapid, multicoat appli-|
cation. The resin application and |
curing sequence and conditions are |
automatically controlled to obtain |
clean, free coating of outstanding |
|durability and impact resistance. |

Pipeline construction in the Free
| World this year is estimated at}
| 28,461 miles. Most lines range from |
|two to twelve inches in diameter,
jalthough the big twenty-four and
thirty-inch lines account for more
| than 4500 miles. This is the largest
| Single market which would be af-
fected by the new development.

Grants of nearly $2 million, the
Education Foundation since

it was established

Helps Meet Need for Educated Manpower

largest annual program of the Esso
in 1955, have been

announced by M. J. Rathbone, chairman of the Foundation. The cur-

| rent grants are for the 1963-1964 academic year.

By the end of the current academic year, the Foundation, since its

founding, will have made grants tot-

aling more than $15 million.

The Foundation is supported by

| Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) |

- Humble Oil

Jersey Pro-
duction Research Company, Esso In-
ternational Inc., Humble Pipe Line
Company, and Esso Standard East-
ern, Inc

In this year’s program, unrestrict-
ed grants are the largest in number.
They are, in the opinion of many
educators, particularly helpful to
colleges and universities. To make
them even more meaningful, the
Foundation has raised the scale.
Previously, unrestricted grants were
in the amounts of $2000, $3500 and
$5000. This year they are $3000,
$5000 and $7500.

The total amount of $750,000 in
unrestricted grants is essentially the
same as the year before. The money
will be distributed among 170 in-
stitutions, somewhat fewer than in
previous years. Thirty-two additio-
nal colleges will benefit
$50,000 grant to the United Negro
College Fund.

and six of its affiliates

Development

Other Foundation grants this year
will include sixty-three capital and
development grants amounting to
more than $500,000, thirty-eight en-
gineering and science grants totaling
$170,000, and twenty-two miscella-
neous grants amounting to more
than $250,000.

In commenting on this year's pro-
gram, Mr. Rathbone said that the
Foundation is continuing its efforts
to help meet the tremendous need
for education opportunities and the
demands for more and better edu-
cated manpower.

Announced recently was a_ special
capital grant allotting $400,000 to
the United Negro College Develop-

under a/

ment Fund in amounts of $100,000
over the next four years.

Among special programs receiving
|Esso Education funds is the Harvard
University-Newton School Project.
This is an experiment to train
teachers in introducing economics to
high school students through the use
of actual case studies of American
business firms. It has aroused much
interest in educational circles, and
several school systems are consider-
ing the adoption of the new ap-
proach.

The Esso Education Foundation
also sponsors individual aid to edu-
cation by matching personal contri-
butions, up to $1000 a year, by em-
ployees of Jersey Standard and its
affiliates to institutions of higher
| learning in the U.S.

Yawl Kochat AnchorsHere
On “Long Voyage” Home.
When Started July 18

The yawl Kochat sat silhouetted
against the late afternoon sun, moor-
ed just behind the Bali restaurant in
Oranjestad, its shadowed rigging
giving the appearance of so many
charred stick matches. Around it,
the breakers rolled like bubbling cot-
ton.

On board, crewman Dick Pohe,
tanned by rays of numerous ocean
suns, performed the traditional sea-
man’s bathing ritual: a pan of water
held above the head, a split second
of anticipation, then the curious bap-
tisim that it is said onl llors can
fully appreciate or understand.

The forty-foot Kochat is captained
by John Evans, a fifty-eight-year
old Englishman who, for several
years now, has been living in New
Zealand — when he’s not at sea. Mr.
Pohe, a youthful 3-year-old New
Zealander, has been with Mr. Evans
since April, 1960.

Currently, the pair is heading for
home part in New Zealand. In 1957,
the last time the Kochat dropped
anchor in Aruba, it was also headed
home after an extended journey to
sea. |

This trip began July 18, and they
have ventured to such ports of call
as England, Portugal, Spain, Gibral-

The longest pull was a twenty-two
day voyage from the Canary Islands
to Barbados.

Ask Mr. Pohe what the plans are
after docking in New Zealand and
he’ll tell you he wants to "relax a
bit, visit some, and then make ready
for the next trip — whenever the
captain decides it will be.
