refurbishing, the contact of fenders
and tankers, and in the case of No. 1,
other ships, for the past ten years
has necessitated replacing the tim-
bers on the pier facing and fenders.
The structure calls for twelve-inch
square timbers.

South Side Use

Once the initial hot work is com-
pleted, timbers and fender system on
the pier’s south side adjacent to the
loading structure will be replaced.
This schedule will enable use of the
south side while the complete length |
of the north side undergoes repair. |
Once the north side is finished and|
opened to ships, the south side will
be taken out of service again and its
renovation completed.

In addition to replacing timbers on
the above-water facing, repairing
fenders and spring housings, stronger
guide bars also will be installed. The|

Convection Sections Will Be Added
To Furnaces of Four Combination Units

By Oct. 11, the view of Combination Units 5, 6, 7 and 8 from the
main refinery road will be quite different than its is presently. In fact,
the view will be changing daily and rapidly as the installation of out-
board convection sections progresses. To each unit’s Petrochem furnace
will be added a section in a project estimated at over two and one-half

ships the pier was built to accom-

No. 1 Finger Pier was opened Dec.

The radiant type Petrochem furn-
aces have no convection system. It is
anticipated that the installation of
convection sections will increase the
heating effectiveness of each furnace
thirty-three per cent by heating both
radiantly and convectively and there-
by increase the efficiency of the
units’ primary function. The sections |
will extend approximately sixty feet
south of the center of the furnaces to
which they will be attached.

The attachment will be round,
eleven-foot diameter, duct work
which will be cut into the base of the
present stack atop the main furnace.
The duct will curve downward into
a forty-five-foot long convection box.
Gases funneled into this section will
be released through two channels and
directed into a stack.

high and tapered, will be erected for

each new convection section. The
stacks atop the Petrochem furnaces
will remain, although they will not
be used. They will be shortened and
blanked off. Ascending hot gases
that heat the oil in vertical tubes
which line the furnaces will be forc-
ed into the new duct work and pulled
through the convection system by
fans. The convection box will be lin-
ed with horizontal tubes through
which oil to be heated will be moved.
Although the present Petrochem
stacks will be abbreviated, the mono-
|rail will be retained to pull vertical
tubes.

Piping Replaced, Moved
On Service Water Outlet

The Mechanical Department has
relocated the service water outlet
for the No. 7 Combination Unit con-
|denser. Twenty-inch cast iron pipe
has been installed next to the access
road alongside No. 8 Combination
Unit, farther south than the former
installation because of new outboard
convection sections added there.

When No. 7 Combination Unit was
| built, the outlet emptied into a flume
or sewer north of No. 8 by the entry
road. The flume, however, wouldn’t
accommodate both No. 7 and No. 8.

About twenty-five sections of steel
pipe and fittings were relocated
about fifty feet from the older in-
stallation. About sixteen of these
sections were direct replacements
for the cast iron pipe.

The Antilles Chemical Company ammonia plant was inaugurated
May 29. It was a short and impressive ceremony attended by many
government and business notables, and one which gave platform to
speakers who unanimously associated the plant’s opening with the
economic and technical progress of Aruba. Of equal importance was
the credit they gave to the endeavors of the Aruban workers who have
helped make this and other projects successful. There were three
speakers, M. E. Fisk, vice president and general manager of Antilles,
O. S. Henriquez, lieutenant governor of Aruba, and H. G. Mangelsdorf,
president of the Esso Chemical Company. Government officials includ-
ed Netherlands Vice Premier Dr. H. A. Korthals and Ministers C. D.
Kroon and E, O. Petronia. Mr. Fisk and Mr. Mangelsdorf paid tribute
to the workers of Antilles and Aruba Chemical Industries. The endea-
vors of these workers were further amplified in the remarks of Mr.
Henriquez. The construction of the plant at the Barcadera site was
begun Dec. 10, 1961. Mr. Mangelsdorf referred to this date and the ef-
forts of the late Minister J. E. Irausquin. In his address, the Esso
Chemical president "sincerely hoped that this plant, backed as it will =
be by Esso Research and Engineering Company and by all resources y, G,
at the disposal of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), will contribute
considerably towards the economic development of this island.’’ That
which officially put the ammonia plant ’’on stream’’ was the turning of
a lever on the side of a pedestal on which was a large container of clear
liquid. The liquid changed color when Mr. Henriquez turned the lever.

Johan E. Benschop, an operator in Process-Light Oils Finishing, has
been named the suggester-of-the-month. The idea that earned him the
honor and a check for Fls. 200 suggested the installation of steam con-
nection on gas burners in the No. 11 crude rerun still furnace. Its use
prevents plugging of the burners.

Coin-Your-Ideas Program

Lago’s Coin-Your-Ideas program
appears headed for another peak
year in employee participation, ac-
cording to Max Croes, CYI secretary. |

The Mechanical Department has
consistently sent in more ideas than
any other department, and has like-
wise had more ideas adopted, which

Yard and Mason of the Mechanical
Department and the department’s
runner-up, Technical and Admini-
stration, had to take a back seat this}
past year, however, to Cracking and
Light Ends, and Light Oils Finishing, |
both in the Process Department.
While the two Mechanical sections
led in the number of ideas submitted |
in 1960 and 1961, those two Process
sections out-suggested them in 1962.

Consistently tops in Technical De-
parment for the past three years has
been the Engineering Section. |

There is no direct relationship be-|
tween the number of suggestions|
submitted and the number of ideas|
adopted. Mechanical-Storehouse, for
example, had eight of nine sugges-
tions adopted in 1960; nine out of
seventeen in 1961; and three out of
eleven in 1962.

Many of the departments accep-
tance averaged between a third and}
a half of the suggestions submitted
last year, and this comparison ap-
pears to be about the ratio for the
preceding three years. |

The CYI program paid awards
amounting to Fis. 15,500 in 1960,
when tangible savings of $37,120
were realized. It paid Fils, 19,790 in

1961, with tangible saving of $51,704;
and Fls. 20,600 in 1962, with tangible
savings of $47,030.

By comparison, there were 442
ideas received in 1960. There were
735 in 1961 and 968 last year, more
than double the 1960 figure. There!
were 137 suggestions submitted in|
March, 1962, peak for the three}
years covered in the report. The
committee has adopted between six
and forty-nine suggestions a month |
since January, 1960. |

Mr. Croes pointed out that the |
number of suggestions submitted has

The finger pier will be undergoing
much the same type of redoing that
was completed on No. 2 Finger Pier
in March. There will be more work
to the present pier project because
of a berthing area longer than No. 2
Finger Pier, which means more tim-
bers to be replaced, more wales to be
repaired and more fender housings
to be repaired or replaced.
A comparison of the two piers'
equipment can be found in the fen-
der system. The No 1 Finger Pier
syLsem L'j inilit sixty-four, thirty-
ton springs, divided equally on either
side of the 630-foot stretch of pier
used to berth ships. No. 2 Finger
Pier has a shorter breasting island,
and tankers, and in the case of No. 1,
other ships, for the past ten years
has necessitated replacing the tim-
bers on the pier facing and fenders.
The structure calls for twelve-inch
square timbers
South Side Use
Once the initial hot work is com-
pleted, timbers and fender system on
the pier's south side adjacent to the
loading structure will be replaced.
This schedule will enable use of the
south side while the complete length
of the north side undergoes repair.
Once the north side is finished and
opened to ships, the south side will
be taken out of service again and its
renovation completed.

The radiant type Petrochem furn-
aces have no convection system. It is
anticipated that the installation of
convection sections will increase the
heating effectiveness of each furnace
thirty-three per cent by heating both
radiantly and convectively and there-
by increase the efficiency of the
units' primary function. The sections
will extend approximately sixty feet
south of the center of the furnaces to
which they will be attached.
The attachment will be round,
eleven-foot diameter, duct work
which will be cut into the base of the
present stack atop the main furnace.
The duct will curve downward into
a forty-five-foot long convection box.
Gases funneled into this section will
be released through two channels and
directed into a stack.
Four new stacks, each 180 feet
high and tapered, will be erected for
each new convection section. The
stacks atop the Petrochem furnaces
will remain, although they will not
be used. They will be shortened and
blanked off. Ascending hot gases
that heat the oil in vertical tubes
which line the furnaces will be forc-
ed into the new duct work and pulled
through the convection system by
fans. The convection box will be lin-
ed with horizontal tubes through
which oil to be heated will be moved.
Although the present Petrochem
stacks will be abbreviated, the mono-
rail will be retained to pull vertical
tubes.
Foster Wheeler Corporation of
New York has the contract, and will
employ eight to ten expatriates and
an average of 125 men hired in
Aruba.

The Antilles Chemical Company ammonia plant was inaugurated
May 29. It was a short and impressive ceremony attended by many
government and business notables, and one which gave platform to
speakers who unanimously associated the plant's opening with the
economic and technical progress of Aruba.
Kroon and E. O. Petronia. Mr. Fisk and Mr. Mangelsdorf paid tribute
to the workers of Antilles and Aruba Chemical Industries. The endea-
vors of these workers were further amplified in the remarks of Mr.
Henriquez. The construction of the plant at the Barcadera site was
begun Dec. 10, 1961. Mr. Mangelsdorf referred to this date and the ef-
forts of the late Minister J. E. Irausquin. In his address, the Esso
Chemical president "sincerely hoped that this plant, backed as it will
be by Esso Research and Engineering Company and by all resources
at the disposal of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), will contribute
considerably towards the economic development of this island." That
which officially put the ammonia plant "on stream" was the turning of
a lever on the side of a pedestal on which was a large container of clear
liquid. The liquid changed color when Mr. Henriquez turned the lever.

Peak Year Is Anticipated
For Participants in '63
Coin-Your-ldeas Program
Lago's Coin-Your-Ideas program
appears headed for another peak
year in employee participation, ac-
cording to Max Croes, CYI secretary.
The Mechanical Department has
consistently sent in more ideas than
any other department, and has like-
wise had more ideas adopted, which
follows since this department has the
most employees.
Yard and Mason of the Mechanical
Department and the department's
runner-up, Technical and Admini-
stration, had to take a back seat this
past year, however, to Cracking and
Light Ends, and Light Oils Finishing,
both in the Process Department.
While the two Mechanical sections
led in the number of ideas submitted
in 1960 and 1961, those two Process
sections out-suggested them in 1962.
Consistently tops in Technical De-
parment for the past three years has
been the Engineering Section.
There is no direct relationship be-
tween the number of suggestions
submitted and the number of ideas
adopted. Mechanical-Storehouse, for
example, had eight of nine sugges-
tions adopted in 1960; nine out of
seventeen in 1961; and three out of
eleven in 1962.
Many of the departments accep-
tance averaged between a third and
a half of the suggestions submitted
last year, and this comparison ap-
pears to be about the ratio for the
preceding three years
The CYI program paid awards
amounting to Fls. 15,500 in 1960,
when tangible savings of $37,120
were realized. It paid Fls 19,790 in
1961, with tangible saving of $51,704;
and Fls. 20,600 in 1962, with tangible
savings of $47,030.
By comparison, there were 442
ideas received in 1960. There were
735 in 1961 and 968 last year, more

The structure calls for twelve-inch

South Side Use

Once the initial hot work is com-

This schedule will enable use of the

The radiant type Petrochem furn-
aces have no convection system. It is
anticipated that the installation of
convection sections will increase the
heating effectiveness of each furnace
thirty-three per cent by heating both
radiantly and convectively and there-
by increase the efficiency of the
units’ primary function. The sections |
will extend approximately sixty feet
south of the center of the furnaces to
which they will be attached.

The attachment will be round,
eleven-foot diameter, duct work
which will be cut into the base of the
present stack atop the main furnace.
The duct will curve downward into
a forty-five-foot long convection box.
Gases funneled into this section will
be released through two channels and
directed into a stack.

high and tapered, will be erected for

each new convection section. The
stacks atop the Petrochem furnaces
will remain, although they will not
be used. They will be shortened and
blanked off. Ascending hot gases
that heat the oil in vertical tubes
which line the furnaces will be forc-
ed into the new duct work and pulled
through the convection system by
fans. The convection box will be lin-
ed with horizontal tubes through
which oil to be heated will be moved.
Although the present Petrochem
stacks will be abbreviated, the mono-

Piping Replaced, Moved
On Service Water Outlet

The Mechanical Department has
relocated the service water outlet
for the No. 7 Combination Unit con-
|denser. Twenty-inch cast iron pipe
has been installed next to the access
road alongside No. 8 Combination
Unit, farther south than the former
installation because of new outboard
convection sections added there.

When No. 7 Combination Unit was
| built, the outlet emptied into a flume
or sewer north of No. 8 by the entry
road. The flume, however, wouldn’t
accommodate both No. 7 and No. 8.

About twenty-five sections of steel
pipe and fittings were relocated
about fifty feet from the older in-
stallation. About sixteen of these
sections were direct replacements
for the cast iron pipe.

The Antilles Chemical Company ammonia plant was inaugurated
May 29. It was a short and impressive ceremony attended by many
government and business notables, and one which gave platform to
speakers who unanimously associated the plant’s opening with the
economic and technical progress of Aruba. Of equal importance was
the credit they gave to the endeavors of the Aruban workers who have
helped make this and other projects successful. There were three
speakers, M. E. Fisk, vice president and general manager of Antilles,
O. S. Henriquez, lieutenant governor of Aruba, and H. G. Mangelsdorf,
president of the Esso Chemical Company. Government officials includ-
ed Netherlands Vice Premier Dr. H. A. Korthals and Ministers C. D.
Kroon and E, O. Petronia. Mr. Fisk and Mr. Mangelsdorf paid tribute
to the workers of Antilles and Aruba Chemical Industries. The endea-
vors of these workers were further amplified in the remarks of Mr.
Henriquez. The construction of the plant at the Barcadera site was
begun Dec. 10, 1961. Mr. Mangelsdorf referred to this date and the ef-
forts of the late Minister J. E. Irausquin. In his address, the Esso
Chemical president "sincerely hoped that this plant, backed as it will =
be by Esso Research and Engineering Company and by all resources y, G,
at the disposal of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), will contribute
considerably towards the economic development of this island.’’ That
which officially put the ammonia plant ’’on stream’’ was the turning of
a lever on the side of a pedestal on which was a large container of clear
liquid. The liquid changed color when Mr. Henriquez turned the lever.

For Participants in 63 |
Coin-Your-Ideas Program

Lago’s Coin-Your-Ideas program
appears headed for another peak
year in employee participation, ac-
cording to Max Croes, CYI secretary. |

The Mechanical Department has
consistently sent in more ideas than
any other department, and has like-
wise had more ideas adopted, which

Yard and Mason of the Mechanical
Department and the department’s
runner-up, Technical and Admini-
stration, had to take a back seat this}
past year, however, to Cracking and
Light Ends, and Light Oils Finishing, |
both in the Process Department.
While the two Mechanical sections
led in the number of ideas submitted |
in 1960 and 1961, those two Process
sections out-suggested them in 1962.

Consistently tops in Technical De-
parment for the past three years has
been the Engineering Section. |

There is no direct relationship be-|
tween the number of suggestions|
submitted and the number of ideas|
adopted. Mechanical-Storehouse, for
example, had eight of nine sugges-
tions adopted in 1960; nine out of
seventeen in 1961; and three out of
eleven in 1962.

Many of the departments accep-
tance averaged between a third and}
a half of the suggestions submitted
last year, and this comparison ap-
pears to be about the ratio for the
preceding three years. |

The CYI program paid awards
amounting to Fis. 15,500 in 1960,
when tangible savings of $37,120
were realized. It paid Fils, 19,790 in

1961, with tangible saving of $51,704;
and Fls. 20,600 in 1962, with tangible
savings of $47,030.

By comparison, there were 442
ideas received in 1960. There were
735 in 1961 and 968 last year, more
than double the 1960 figure. There!
were 137 suggestions submitted in|
March, 1962, peak for the three}
years covered in the report. The
committee has adopted between six
and forty-nine suggestions a month |
since January, 1960. |

Mr. Croes pointed out that the |
number of suggestions submitted has
