THE LATE Ned Dearborn, right, is shown presenting Lago’s initial Nat-

Ned Dearborn, National Safety Council
Ex-President and ’Mr. Safety,’ Is Dead

Ned H. Dearborn, president of the National Safety Council fr
1942 to 1958, died Aug. 1 in Titusville, New York, after a long illness.
He was sixty-nine years old.

Lago employees on the payroll in 1955 will remember Mr. Dearborn
as the man the Aruba Esso News dubbed, ’’Mr. Safety.’’ He came to
BRN ea NLL a YT

sonally present J. J. Horigan, then
Lago president, with the company’s
first top NSC award earned for its
outstanding 1954 safety record.

While at Lago, Mr. Dearborn rev-
ealed several facets of his personality
and his safety philosophies that
characterized the man. He was easy
going, witty and always wore a smile
on a bright, kindly face. He was not
a pretentious man. Though he had
earned a Ph. D. in 1925 from Colim-
bia University, he never used the
title nor letters. He preferred being
called Ned, not Mr. Dearborn. He
also had the ability to put anyone at
ease.

A leading educator in New York
in the field of adult education, Mi
Dearborn felt that safety was prim-
arily a program of education. It was
his success in inducing adults to
further their educations that led to
the thinking of NSC directors in

1942 that here was a man who could
induce people to live safely for their
own good. He once stated, while in
the NSC presidency, "After all, saf-
ety is a mater of teaching teach-
ing safe ways to do thing

While he was visiting Lago in July,
1955, he put into practice many of
his safety teachings. He spoke to
employees in massive refinery safety
meetings; he talked to supervisors
and top management members. Dur-
ing his stay he could be found on the
docks giving impromptu talks
wharfingers on such safety items as
life jackets. Mr. Dearborn had the
ability of being able to talk on any
safety subject without having a pre-
parea speech as a guide. His life v
Cedicated to encouraging people by
any communications means to work
and play safely and to be safe at
home. This then, could be Ned Dear-
born’s epitaph.

Ned Dearborn, National Safety Council
Ex-President and 'Mr. Safety,' Is Dead
Ned H. Dearborn, president of the National Safety Council from
1942 to 1958, died Aug. 1 in Titusville, New York, after a long illness
He was sixty-nine years old.
Lago employees on the payroll in 1955 will remember Mr. Dearborn
as the man the Aruba Esso News dubbed, "Mr. Safety."
Aruba in July of that year to per-
sonally present J. J. Horigan, then
Lago president, with the company's
first top NSC award earned for its
outstanding 1954 safety record.
While at Lago, Mr. Dearborn rev-
ealed several facets of his personality
and his safety philosophies that
characterized the man He was easy
going, witty and always wore a smile
on a bright, kindly face. He was not
a pretentious man. Though he had
earned a Ph. D. in 1925 from Colum-
bla University, he never used the
title nor letters. He preferred being
called Ned, not Mr. Dearborn. He
also had the ability to put anyone at
ease.
A leading educator in New York
in the field of adult education, Mir.
Dearborn felt that safety was prim-
arily a program of education. It was
his success in inducing adults to
further their educations that led to
the thinking of NSC dnectois in
He came to
1942 that here was a man who could
induce people to live safely for then
own good. He once stated, while in
the NSC presidency, "After all, saf-
ety is a mater of teaching -teach-
ing safe ways to do things."
While he was visiting Lago in July,
1955, he put into practice many of
hi: safety teachings. He spoke to
,employees in massive refinery safety
Meetings: he talked to supervisors
and top management members. Diur-
ing his stay he could be found on the
docks giving impromptu talks to
Swharfingers on such safety items Jas
life jackets. Mr Dearborn had the
[ability of being able to talk on any
safety subject without having a pre-
paleca speech as a guide His life was
Dedicated to encouraging people by
any communications means to work
!and play safely and to be safe at
home This then, could be Ned Deal-
horn's epitaph.

Ned Dearborn, National Safety Council
Ex-President and ’Mr. Safety,’ Is Dead

Ned H. Dearborn, president of the National Safety Council fr
1942 to 1958, died Aug. 1 in Titusville, New York, after a long illness.
He was sixty-nine years old.

Lago employees on the payroll in 1955 will remember Mr. Dearborn
as the man the Aruba Esso News dubbed, ’’Mr. Safety.’’ He came to
BRN ea NLL a YT

sonally present J. J. Horigan, then
Lago president, with the company’s
first top NSC award earned for its
outstanding 1954 safety record.

While at Lago, Mr. Dearborn rev-
ealed several facets of his personality
and his safety philosophies that
characterized the man. He was easy
going, witty and always wore a smile
on a bright, kindly face. He was not
a pretentious man. Though he had
earned a Ph. D. in 1925 from Colim-
bia University, he never used the
title nor letters. He preferred being
called Ned, not Mr. Dearborn. He
also had the ability to put anyone at
ease.

A leading educator in New York
in the field of adult education, Mi
Dearborn felt that safety was prim-
arily a program of education. It was
his success in inducing adults to
further their educations that led to
the thinking of NSC directors in

1942 that here was a man who could
induce people to live safely for their
own good. He once stated, while in
the NSC presidency, "After all, saf-
ety is a mater of teaching teach-
ing safe ways to do thing

While he was visiting Lago in July,
1955, he put into practice many of
his safety teachings. He spoke to
employees in massive refinery safety
meetings; he talked to supervisors
and top management members. Dur-
ing his stay he could be found on the
docks giving impromptu talks
wharfingers on such safety items as
life jackets. Mr. Dearborn had the
ability of being able to talk on any
safety subject without having a pre-
parea speech as a guide. His life v
Cedicated to encouraging people by
any communications means to work
and play safely and to be safe at
home. This then, could be Ned Dear-
born’s epitaph.
