"Round -the-Clock Safety

It’s a day like any other day. The four o'clock whistle has blown and | oratories employee and a General
a long line of Lago employees is wending its way to the Main Gate, As | Services Department man.

men cross refinery roads, they look to left and right. Traffic is slow
and orderly with drivers heeding the 30 kilometer per hour speed
limit.

Let’s call one of the workers Jose. He could have any name. He's
left his turret lathe, a tool he uses eight hours daily to fashion parts
and hardware out of hard steel and other metals, and is bound for
home.

Daily Jose handles sharp cutters. His lathe chuck whirls at high
speeds. Bits of metal sometimes fly through the air at high velocities.
Yet, during all the many years Jose has worked at Lago he has never
been disabled by his machine. Once he incurred a slight cut which he
had treated at the Employee Medical Center. All in all, his safety
record has been an excellent one because Jose believes in working
safely. He believes in following shop rules and regulations. Jose never
engages in horseplay, He also wears his safety glasses faithfully when
operating his lathe. Jose is a safe man, all right, until he reaches his
sacred home.

As soon as he entered his yard that evening he dropped his mental
safety guard. Luckily, he barely missed stepping on the sharp tines of
a rake that he had left on the ground the evening before. He wasn’t
so fortunate when he climbed the porch steps and stumbled on his son's
toy truck, He managed to stop his fall by catching hold of a pillar but
he knew by the pain that his ankle would be sore for a few days.

On into the house went Jose. Because he was favoring his slight
sprain, he was careful while crossing a loose throw rug. Had he been
in a hurry he might have had a serious tumble. Upon greeting his wife
he learned that his son Eddie had suffered a nasty cut on his foot that
morning from a piece of broken glass half-hidden in the yard, A neigh-
bor had taken Eddie to Lago Hospital where a doctor had closed the
wound with sutures and had given Eddie a precautionary Tetatus
booster shot.

Jose comforted his son and examined the fresh wound knowingly. |
Afterwards, he sat down to enjoy the daily paper. From the corner of |
his eye, he noticed his wife positioning a chair next to the kitchen cup-
board. There was something on top she needed but was unable to reach.
Is was while she was stretching up from her precarious perch on the |
chair that one of the legs broke. She managed to cling to the cup-
board until Jose could come to her rescue, his pace slowed by his
tender ankle.

It’s not yet 6 p.m. and Jose’s family has had two near miss accidents
and two painful ones. Jose is still asleep as far as home safety goes.
The warning bell has yet to go off.

No more incidents happened during the evening. The next morning
Jose made it safely to work although he thought the driver was taking |
the corners a little too fast. Back at work, Jose again made safety an|
integral part of his job and worked safely through the day.

Why is it Lago employees perform so safely at work yet incur so}
many off-the-job accidents? There were eighteen employees disabled
from off-the-job accidents in September yet not one employee suffered
an on-the-job disabling injury that month. A better comparison is that
in 1961 there were 237 disabling injuries to Lago employees from off-
the-job accidents while just three occurred on the job. To be safe, you
must think "'safe’’ twenty-four hours a day.

Memory Training
Seminar Starts
Jan. 15 at Lago

Dr. Bruno Furst, assisted by his
vife, will begin teaching memory
improvement techniques to 132 sem-
inar participants next week. The
first of three groups will meet Jan
15. Each group of forty-four partici-
pants will attend a total of eight
essions and will also complete out-
side reading and study assignments

Dr ‘urst Mrs. B. Furst

Dr. Furst is considered the world’s
leading memory expert. A lawyer
vho hasn't practiced law for thirty
years, Dr. Furst took up memory
improvement while a student in
Germany. Using tried and proven
techniques, he committed all his law
books to memory and was admitted
to practice in 1919. Dr. Furst left
Hitler’s Germany in 1933 to teach
memory training in Prague ix
years later he opened his School of
Memory and Concentration in New
York City. Since that time, he and
his staff have handled more than
25,000 forgetful pupils
The Lago seminar was originally
scheduled for two groups but the
response for Dr. Furst’s course was
so great that staggered sessions for
three groups had to be scheduled
Dr. Furst limits oup to forty-
four. He agreed to stay in Aruba two
idditional weeks so that the course
could be extended because of the

ered sessions.

Those who absorb Dr. Furst’s

teachings will discover

quarter. Through her own power and
steering and maneuvering on the part
of the tugs, she made a controlled
approach to the finger pier. In close
proximity to the pier, she sent out
her bow line to the leading shore
bollard with this she could pull
and let out the important back spring
she could check her forward
movement. Also out went a back
spring aft to check the ship from
astern. By this time, about
9:45 a.m., the Arikok was no longer
needed

Through the use of
talkie communications, Mr. Brown
relayed Mr. Hosch’s observations to
the bridge, and the Orion Hunter's
bow was positioned within a hair’s
breadth of the pre-painted limitation
mark on the pier.

its Marine Department and for
Captain Stratidakis and the forty-
six members of his crew. A harbor
record had been broken off the

record books as the biggest visitor
went the Farah Pahlavi, a 53,584
deadweight-ton giant in her own

right, who had made her mark Sept.
7, 1961. The crew of the Orion Hun-
ter had completed a maiden voyage
in the United States’ largest

mer-

Built by Bethlehem Steel at a cost
of nearly $20 million, the Orion Hun-
ter is equipped with a cross com-
pound double reduction geared tur-
bine of 23,000 horsepower

This tremendous power pushed the
record tanker to Aruba where she
picked up two grades of clean prod-
ucts for delivery to the Far East.
She could only load to a draft of 33
feet this side of the Panama Canal
because this limit was set for her
initial passage through the water-
way. She is to pick up more cargo
on the U.S. west coast.

Captain Stratidakis was thorough-
ly pleased with the berthing oper-
ation in San Nicolas Harbor. "Noth-
ing went wrong,”
who handled
very nice job.”

An Orion
commented

he said, "the men
this operation did a

Hunter seaman also
favorably on the oper-
ation. Approached as he was helping
lower the gang plank he said: "The
pilot did a nice job of getting her in
here. We hardly touched the dock.”

Overything about the Orion Hunter
calls for superlatives, She’s long and
has a summer draft of nearly forty-
four feet, She carries cargo in forty-

two tanks. Fourteen tanks run the
length of the ship three abreast.
Loaded to summer marks, she can
carry 558,819.6 barrels.

It takes just forty-seven men to
man the giant vessel, including the
engineering crew of sixteen. This is
only three more men than the crew
required on a T-2 type tanker rated
at just 16,000 deadweight tons which
clearly cites the operating economy
of today's goliaths of the seas

The 1000th service watch recip-

that he was a labor helper B in the

He added that Mr. Werleman’s last

Why is it Lago employees perform so safely at work yet incur so}
many off-the-job accidents? There were eighteen employees disabled
from off-the-job accidents in September yet not one employee suffered
an on-the-job disabling injury that month. A better comparison is that
in 1961 there were 237 disabling injuries to Lago employees from off-
the-job accidents while just three occurred on the job. To be safe, you
must think "'safe’’ twenty-four hours a day.

Safety Dia y Anochi

Tur dia Jose ta traha cu cortadornan skerpi. E chuck di su mashien

ta participa den wega di man.

Memory Training
Seminar Starts
Jan. 15 at Lago

Dr. Bruno Furst, assisted by his
vife, will begin teaching memory
improvement techniques to 132 sem-
inar participants next week. The
first of three groups will meet Jan
15. Each group of forty-four partici-
pants will attend a total of eight
essions and will also complete out-
side reading and study assignments

Dr ‘urst Mrs. B. Furst

Dr. Furst is considered the world’s
leading memory expert. A lawyer
vho hasn't practiced law for thirty
years, Dr. Furst took up memory
improvement while a student in
Germany. Using tried and proven
techniques, he committed all his law
books to memory and was admitted
to practice in 1919. Dr. Furst left
Hitler’s Germany in 1933 to teach
memory training in Prague ix
years later he opened his School of
Memory and Concentration in New
York City. Since that time, he and
his staff have handled more than
25,000 forgetful pupils
The Lago seminar was originally
scheduled for two groups but the
response for Dr. Furst’s course was
so great that staggered sessions for
three groups had to be scheduled
Dr. Furst limits oup to forty-
four. He agreed to stay in Aruba two
idditional weeks so that the course
could be extended because of the

ered sessions.

Those who absorb Dr. Furst’s

teachings will discover

Hunter. The Arikok remained at port |

quarter. Through her own power and
steering and maneuvering on the part
of the tugs, she made a controlled
approach to the finger pier. In close
proximity to the pier, she sent out
her bow line to the leading shore
bollard with this she could pull
and let out the important back spring
she could check her forward
movement. Also out went a back
spring aft to check the ship from
astern. By this time, about
9:45 a.m., the Arikok was no longer
needed

Through the use of
talkie communications, Mr. Brown
relayed Mr. Hosch’s observations to
the bridge, and the Orion Hunter's
bow was positioned within a hair’s
breadth of the pre-painted limitation
mark on the pier.

It was a major event for Lago and

its Marine Department and for
Captain Stratidakis and the forty-
six members of his crew. A harbor
record had been broken off the

record books as the biggest visitor
went the Farah Pahlavi, a 53,584
deadweight-ton giant in her own

right, who had made her mark Sept.
7, 1961. The crew of the Orion Hun-
ter had completed a maiden voyage
in the United States’ largest
| chant tanker,

| The Orion Hunter had just com-
| pleted her trials Dec. 14 for three

|days she had maneuvered at full

mer-

Built by Bethlehem Steel at a cost
of nearly $20 million, the Orion Hun-
ter is equipped with a cross com-
pound double reduction geared tur-
bine of 23,000 horsepower

This tremendous power pushed the
record tanker to Aruba where she
picked up two grades of clean prod-
ucts for delivery to the Far East.
She could only load to a draft of 33
feet this side of the Panama Canal
because this limit was set for her
initial passage through the water-
way. She is to pick up more cargo
on the U.S. west coast.

Captain Stratidakis was thorough-
ly pleased with the berthing oper-
ation in San Nicolas Harbor. "Noth-
ing went wrong,”
who handled
very nice job.”

An Orion
commented

he said, "the men
this operation did a

Hunter seaman also
favorably on the oper-
ation. Approached as he was helping
lower the gang plank he said: "The
pilot did a nice job of getting her in
here. We hardly touched the dock.”

Overything about the Orion Hunter
calls for superlatives, She’s long and
has a summer draft of nearly forty-
four feet, She carries cargo in forty-

two tanks. Fourteen tanks run the
length of the ship three abreast.
Loaded to summer marks, she can
carry 558,819.6 barrels.

It takes just forty-seven men to
man the giant vessel, including the
engineering crew of sixteen. This is
only three more men than the crew
required on a T-2 type tanker rated
at just 16,000 deadweight tons which
clearly cites the operating economy
of today's goliaths of the seas
