Idea Named

CYI-of-Month

An idea that started off as a safety suggestion has led to a reduction
in oil loss from slop oil tanks on Finger Piers 1 and 2 and No, 1 Gas
Dock. It was the ingenuity of M. I. Lacle, safety inspector A in the
Industrial Relations Department’s Safety Division, that produced the
combination safety-oil loss reduction idea which was adjudged the

Thirty- Year Awards

The thirty-year service careers of
two Process-Utilities employ and
a Mechanical-Yard man were recog-
nized and honored at a special man-

nent staff meeting Dec. 13
Thirty-year service certificates and
emblems were presented to Pedro J.
Wever, a: tant operator, and Cur-
tis R. Osborn, shift foreman, both of
Proces: tilities, and Damasco van
Linde, Mechanical-Yard clean-
outman, by Vice President F. C. Do-
novan. In making the presentations,
Mr. Donovan remarked that one of
the reasons Lago is doing well in the
world petroleum business is because
of the contributions of the company’s
long-service employe:

Process Superintendent G. L. Mz
Nutt gave service and personal his-
tories of both Mr. Wever and Mr
Osborn. He said that Mr. Wever, who
joined Lago June 30, 1931, as a Yard
stevedore, became one of Lago’s first
air products operators when he moy-
ed to Process-Utilities in November
of that year. Promotions over the
years included Mr. Wever’s advance-
ment to process helper C, B and A
and controlman. In December, 1945,
he was promoted to assistant oper-
ator. "Pedro's job performance has
been very good over the years,” Mr.
MacNutt said.

Of Mr. Osborn’'s career, Mr. Mac-
Nutt said he was originally employ-
ed as an electrical apprentice in July,
1930, He was assigned to Process- |
Utilities in November, 1933, as an|
operator third class and through a}
series of promotions advanced to a|
first class operator, operator, in-
structor and technical assistant. He
assumed his present duties last Feb-

der

a

ruary. "I think Ozzie ended up in
Utilities because he was such a good
basketball player,’ Mr. MacNutt
quipped. ’’Utilities got hold of him
because in those days it was pretty
important to have a good departmen-
tal ball team. Ozzie, Ken Springer
and Joe Proterra were the team’s
main stays.’’ Another personal high-
light revealed by Mr. MacNutt was
Mr. Osborn’s prowess with a bow and
arrow. In the exchange that followed
on this subject Mr. MacNutt remark-
ed that Mr. Osborn was supposed to
have bagged a deer with his bow and
arrow but that an element of doubt
was involved. Mr. Osborn eliminated
the doubt when he said, "All I can
say is, 'I scratched him.’”

ent J. R. Proterra said he had work-
ed with all three thirty-year reci-
pients in the past, he congratulated
all three. He went on to relate the
work history of Mr. Van der Linde.
"Dama, as we all know him, started
with Lago Oct. 25, 1931, as a Crack-
ing Plant still cleaner. For the next
seven years he served in that capa-
city. Dama transferred to the dry
dock as a mechanic B in January,
1938, and remained there until 1954
when he returned to the Yard craft
as a cleanoutman,” Mr. Proterra rel-
ated. He went on to say that in the
refinery’s early years, cleanout work
was rugged and difficult. "There
were a lot more stills,” Mr. Pro-
terra went on, "and lots of coke to
contend with. Now cleanout work is

Department-Wide Contest

Will Boost O

ff-Job Safety

| Competition between departments that make up Lago will start
| Jan. 1 in Lago’s year-long Off-the-Job Safety Contest. Departmental
| units, as listed on the back of the Lago Safety News, will have a

chance to be a winner in one of two categories — zero disabling injury
| frequency rate or lowest calculable disabling injury frequency rate.

In the first winner situation, the
department with a zero rate and|
the largest number of employees will
win. In the other winner situation,
each department’s 1961 off-the-job
| disabling injury frequency rate will
be considered par for the contest. To
win, the department must have the
lowest rate — calculated by a for-
mula based on total manhours of
leisure time — and this rate must
|be lower than its 1961 rate.

Both winning departments. will
receive special safety trophies bearing
appropriate inscriptions acknowledg-
In addition,
every employee in the winning dep-
artments will receive attractive in-
dividual prizes.

Contest Major Effort

The contest is a major effort on
the part of Lago’s executive man-
jagement to increase employees’
|awareness of the company’s deep
jconcern for the high off-the-job dis-
jabling injury rate and to promote
means of reducing these injuries. For
the last five years Lago employees
have incurred about’ twenty-five
times as many off-the-job disabling
injuries as inflicted on the job. The
| economic loss resulting from off-the-
job injuries has been great to both
|Lago and the disabled employee.

Also joining the year-long attack
|on off-the-job injuries will be Lago’s
fifteen-member Speakers Bureau. The
volunteer speakers, who completed a
special training course last month,
will take their individually-prepared
| safety messages to employees and
their family members all over the

cleaner and better in most all res-
pects. Dama can attest to this.’ He
|said that Mr. Van der Linde was a
quiet individual who has performed
pale job well over the years.

Invited to comment en their long
service careers, all three thirty-year
men responded. Mr. Van der Linde
said he was thankful for the oppor-
tunity to accumulate thirty years
| with the company. Also satisfied
| with his Lago career was Mr. Wever
| who said he appreciated the consider-
ations of his supervisors and looked
|forward to continued cooperation.
Mr. Osborn said his thirty years with
Lago made up a major highlight in
his life, giving him irreplaceable
memories for which he will be thank-
ful always.

to extend invitations to safety speak-

GOB Footballers Stop Dakota Champs

Spectators at Lago Sport Park’s
Dec. 6 presentation football contests
got more than they bargained for.
Fans in the stands were hoping that
GOB, inter-departmental champs,
would at least give Dakota, island-
wide champs, a good game. The big’
surprise came when GOB defeated
the champs 4 to 1

Dakota strategy makers must have
been over-confident because four of
the team’s eleven starters were not
regulars. The scrappy GOB team took
advantage of this and shortly before
half-time had the lead with a 2 to 1
score, By this time Dakota had field-
ed the squad's star players but the
action was to no avail. GOB added
two more goals to its score to cinch
the contest.

CYI-of-Month

An idea that started off as a safety suggestion has led to a reduction
in oil loss from slop oil tanks on Finger Piers 1 and 2 and No, 1 Gas

Industrial Relations Department’s Safety Division, that produced the
combination safety-oil loss reduction idea which was adjudged the

Thirty- Year Awards

The thirty-year service careers of
two Process-Utilities employ and
a Mechanical-Yard man were recog-
nized and honored at a special man-

nent staff meeting Dec. 13
Thirty-year service certificates and
emblems were presented to Pedro J.
Wever, a: tant operator, and Cur-
tis R. Osborn, shift foreman, both of
Proces: tilities, and Damasco van
Linde, Mechanical-Yard clean-
outman, by Vice President F. C. Do-
novan. In making the presentations,
Mr. Donovan remarked that one of
the reasons Lago is doing well in the
world petroleum business is because
of the contributions of the company’s
long-service employe:

Process Superintendent G. L. Mz
Nutt gave service and personal his-
tories of both Mr. Wever and Mr
Osborn. He said that Mr. Wever, who
joined Lago June 30, 1931, as a Yard
stevedore, became one of Lago’s first
air products operators when he moy-
ed to Process-Utilities in November
of that year. Promotions over the
years included Mr. Wever’s advance-
ment to process helper C, B and A
and controlman. In December, 1945,
he was promoted to assistant oper-
ator. "Pedro's job performance has
been very good over the years,” Mr.
MacNutt said.

Of Mr. Osborn’'s career, Mr. Mac-
Nutt said he was originally employ-
ed as an electrical apprentice in July,
1930, He was assigned to Process- |
Utilities in November, 1933, as an|
operator third class and through a}
series of promotions advanced to a|
first class operator, operator, in-
structor and technical assistant. He
assumed his present duties last Feb-

der

a

ruary. "I think Ozzie ended up in
Utilities because he was such a good
basketball player,’ Mr. MacNutt
quipped. ’’Utilities got hold of him
because in those days it was pretty
important to have a good departmen-
tal ball team. Ozzie, Ken Springer
and Joe Proterra were the team’s
main stays.’’ Another personal high-
light revealed by Mr. MacNutt was
Mr. Osborn’s prowess with a bow and
arrow. In the exchange that followed
on this subject Mr. MacNutt remark-
ed that Mr. Osborn was supposed to
have bagged a deer with his bow and
arrow but that an element of doubt
was involved. Mr. Osborn eliminated
the doubt when he said, "All I can
say is, 'I scratched him.’”

Because Mechanical Superintend-

ent J. R. Proterra said he had work-
ed with all three thirty-year reci-
pients in the past, he congratulated
all three. He went on to relate the
work history of Mr. Van der Linde.
"Dama, as we all know him, started
with Lago Oct. 25, 1931, as a Crack-
ing Plant still cleaner. For the next
seven years he served in that capa-
city. Dama transferred to the dry
dock as a mechanic B in January,
1938, and remained there until 1954
when he returned to the Yard craft
as a cleanoutman,” Mr. Proterra rel-
ated. He went on to say that in the
refinery’s early years, cleanout work
was rugged and difficult. "There
were a lot more stills,” Mr. Pro-
terra went on, "and lots of coke to
contend with. Now cleanout work is

Department-Wide Contest

Will Boost O

ff-Job Safety

| Competition between departments that make up Lago will start
| Jan. 1 in Lago’s year-long Off-the-Job Safety Contest. Departmental
| units, as listed on the back of the Lago Safety News, will have a

chance to be a winner in one of two categories — zero disabling injury
| frequency rate or lowest calculable disabling injury frequency rate.

In the first winner situation, the
department with a zero rate and|
the largest number of employees will
win. In the other winner situation,
each department’s 1961 off-the-job
| disabling injury frequency rate will
be considered par for the contest. To
win, the department must have the
lowest rate — calculated by a for-
mula based on total manhours of
leisure time — and this rate must
|be lower than its 1961 rate.

Both winning departments. will
receive special safety trophies bearing
appropriate inscriptions acknowledg-
In addition,
every employee in the winning dep-
artments will receive attractive in-
dividual prizes.

Contest Major Effort

The contest is a major effort on
the part of Lago’s executive man-
jagement to increase employees’
|awareness of the company’s deep
jconcern for the high off-the-job dis-
jabling injury rate and to promote
means of reducing these injuries. For
the last five years Lago employees
have incurred about’ twenty-five
times as many off-the-job disabling
injuries as inflicted on the job. The
| economic loss resulting from off-the-
job injuries has been great to both
|Lago and the disabled employee.

Also joining the year-long attack
|on off-the-job injuries will be Lago’s
fifteen-member Speakers Bureau. The
volunteer speakers, who completed a
special training course last month,
will take their individually-prepared

cleaner and better in most all res-
pects. Dama can attest to this.’ He
|said that Mr. Van der Linde was a
quiet individual who has performed
pale job well over the years.

Invited to comment en their long
service careers, all three thirty-year
men responded. Mr. Van der Linde
said he was thankful for the oppor-
tunity to accumulate thirty years
| with the company. Also satisfied
| with his Lago career was Mr. Wever
| who said he appreciated the consider-
ations of his supervisors and looked
|forward to continued cooperation.
Mr. Osborn said his thirty years with
Lago made up a major highlight in
his life, giving him irreplaceable
memories for which he will be thank-
ful always.

GOB Footballers Stop Dakota Champs

Spectators at Lago Sport Park’s
Dec. 6 presentation football contests
got more than they bargained for.
Fans in the stands were hoping that
GOB, inter-departmental champs,
would at least give Dakota, island-
wide champs, a good game. The big’
surprise came when GOB defeated
the champs 4 to 1

Dakota strategy makers must have
been over-confident because four of
the team’s eleven starters were not
regulars. The scrappy GOB team took
advantage of this and shortly before
half-time had the lead with a 2 to 1
score, By this time Dakota had field-
ed the squad's star players but the
action was to no avail. GOB added
two more goals to its score to cinch
the contest.

union will appoint representatives to
meet with the Industrial Relations
Department to study the problem of
employees seeking assistance in
building homes on sites of their own
choice.
Thirty

Department-Wide Contest
Will Boost Off-Job Safety
Competition between departments that make up Lago will start
Jan. 1 in Lago's year-long Off-the-Job Safety Contest. Departmental
units, as listed on the back of the Lago Safety News, will have a
chance to be a winner in one of two categories zero disabling injury
frequency rate or lowest calculable disabling injury frequency rate.
In the first winner situation, the
department with a zero rate and
the largest number of employees will island. Their principal outlet will be

An idea that started off as a safety suggestion has led to a reduction
in oil loss from slop oil tanks on Finger Piers 1 and 2 and No. 1 Gas

Industrial Relations Department's Safety Division, that produced the
combination safety-oil loss reduction idea which was adjudged the

Contest Major Effort
The contest is a major effort on
the part of Lago's executive man-
agement to increase employees'
awareness of the company's deep
concern for the high off-the-job dis-
abling injury rate and to promote
means of reducing these injuries. For
the last five years Lago employees
have incurred about twenty-five
times as many off-the-job disabling
injuries as inflicted on the job. The
economic loss resulting from off-the-
job injuries has been great to both
Lago and the disabled employee.
Also joining the year-long attack
on off-the-job injuries will be Lago's
fifteen-member Speakers Bureau. The
volunteer speakers, who completed a
special training course last month,
will take their individually-prepared
safety messages to employees and
