Thirty -Year Men
Honored Oct. 11
For Long Service

Several ’’Firsts’ occurred
Lago’s thirty-year awards cere-
mony held Oct. 11 in connection
with a special management staff
meeting, The two long-service em-
ployees honored, Frans C. C. Monte
and Dominico Maduro, were the first
to receive newly-designed service
certificates which for the first time
bore the signature of W. A. Murray,
Lago’s new president.

The meeting was presided by F. C.
Donovan, new Lago vice president

and general manager, and the his- |

tories of both men were outlined by
J. R. Proterra, new Mechanical De-
partment superintendent.

Along with the new came the cus-
tomary old. Both. Mr. Monte, electri-

cian A in Mechanical-Electrical, and |

Mr. Maduro, welder A in Mechanical-
Metal Crafts, joined the company
when it was in its infant stages.
Another who qualified for his thirty-
year service certificate and emblem

was Johannes Tromp, controlman in|

Process-Acid and Edeleanu, who was
unable to attend the special meeting.

In greeting the two men present,
Mr. Donovan cited the refinery’s
newness when they started employ-
ment thirty years ago. He added that
there were no more than 2000 em-
ployees at the time. Mr. Donovan
told the thirty-year men that they had
joined a group that numbered just
272 employees, all of whom had
achieved thirty years’ service during
Lago’s history.

Mr. Proterra first discussed the
service history of Mr. Monte. Frans
knows as much about the electrical
equipment in both powerhouses as
any one at Lago,” Mr. Proterra said.
"That's saying quite a lot,” he added.
Mr. Monte came to Aruba from Su-

siderably reduced sample lag time. To
be useful in controlling process oper-
ations, sample analysis is required
immediately.

| The main advantage of Mr. Wal-

| that the new probe installation draws

| positioning on the pipe. Sample lines
| formerly connected to the wall of a
line pulled foreign matter into the
|chromatograph causing inaccurate
| readings and continuous plugging of
| the analyzer. This plugging called for
daily cleaning of some standard con-
nections to assure
tion. The new connection, by putting
|the probe in the middle of the prod-
| uct stream, draws a more represent-
| ative sample.

The August award was Mr. Wal-
|ker’s first. In addition, for having
| the CYI-of-the-Month, Mr.
received an engraved penknife as a
premium. A total of Fls. 2030 was

Be Changed

n’s system of establishing payment
ve been announced, Common anni-

| versary payday dates will be established for everybody participating in
the plan; all payments of Lago Thrift Plan loans and withdrawals will

be made by check instead of cash.

A six-month cycle has been set up
during which Thrift Plan payments
will be paid on the first payday of
each month. This cycle will be com-
pleted in April, 1962, after which
| everyone’s anniversary date will fall
on the first payday in a month. In
the past, an employee was eligible
to obtain a loan or withdrawal
exactly six months to a day follow-
|ing his previous transaction. Every
|day a small number of transactions
had to be processed. Under the new
plan, all transactions will be handled
on a once-monthly basis.

During the six-month transition
period, no one will have to wait even

|date for payment. Some will receive

Participants whose eligibility dates
lars from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8 inclusive

| Thrift Plan Office prior to Oct. 26.

First checks issued under the new
system will be placed in pay envel-

opes on the first payday in November
for participants whose _ eligibility
| dates are from Nov. 9 through Dec.

tions anytime prior to Nov. 1. Those
with anniversary dates falling from
Dec. 9 through Jan. 9 may receive
loan or withdrawal checks the first
payday in December. Again, applica-
tions must be made before Dec. 1.
These intervals will continue through
April. In May, 1962, all loan and
withdrawal anniversary dates will
fall on paydays and all employees
will be re-eligible for transactions
exactly on their paydays six months
following a previous loan or with-
drawal.

Payments for all loan or with-
drawal applications received after
the last day of any month will be
made on the first payday of the next
month. For example, those eligible to
make transactions from Nov. 9
through Dec. 8 must apply before

ARUBA ESSO NEWS

| Gordon N. Owen, who will leave Lago Oct. 26 for subsequent retire-
ment, could well be dubbed "Mr. Safety."’ During his twenty-four-year
| tenure as head of the Industrial Relations Department's Safety Div-
ision, the company has won safety awards time after time. Better yet,

1937 to just seven in 1960.

Under Mr. Owen's tutelage, the |
Safety Division has been instrumen-
tal in helping Lago coin the slogan,

"The World’s Safest Refinery,” as a

a host of protective safety items,
accident prevention programs, acci-

|dent investigation programs, safety
| promotion programs and on and off-

the-job safety drives and it’s ap-
parent that Lago’s safety efforts
have come a long, long way under
Mr. Owen's leadership

His total company service is more
than thirty-one years. He came to}
| Lago Aug. 16, 1937, from Esso’s Bay-
way Refinery and was first employ-
ed by Standard Oil Company (N.J.)
June 16, 1930. During his Lago te-
nure he spent eight months with the
International Petroleum Company,

program. Prior to that, in 1956, he

1927, as an apprentice electrician, He
progressed through the years to elec-
trician B in 1939 and electrician A in
1940. "It was difficult to get housing
in those day said Mr. Proterra,
"so Frans decided to live on a barge
He would jump overboard with his
clothes on to scrub both himself and
his clothes. Fresh water was hard to
get and was costly.”

"Mail was hard to get, too. You
{had to go to Oranjestad to get it.
|Frans would hitch a ride with the
water wagon that traveled between
San Nicolas and Oranjestad,’’ Mr
Proterra concluded. He said that Mr

Monte had given good and faithful
service to Lago during his thirty

years on the job

Mr. Maduro, said Mr. Proterra, is
called Joe on the job. "It’s probably
because it’s shorter than Dominico,”

Mr. Proterra quipped. He said Mr.
Maduro started with Lago Feb. 4,
1931, as a laborer in Mechanical-

| Yard, later worked as a welder's hel-
|per then went to the Storehouse's
salvage yard. From mid-1936 to mid-
| 1954, he served in the former dry
dock craft. While there he advanced
to dry dock mechanic A and welder
A. Mr. Maduro transferred to Mech-
anical-Metal Crafts in 1954 where he
| has remained since. "Joe made fish-
ing pots in Aruba and spent three
years in Curacao with Shell before
he came to Lago. He likes to fish and
play dominoes. The latter he faith- |
fully practices during lunch breaks
We appreciate the long service, all
with no lost-time injuries, he has
| given Lago,” Mr. Proterra concluded
| Mr. Tromp, not present at the
| meeting, received his awards later in |
the day. He served with the Esso |
Transportation Company from April
2, 1925, until his initial employ with
Lago Oct. 21, 1935. He started as an

Although a chemist by profession,
the majority of Mr. Owen's working

that safety is a real and necessary
part of operations and that these
operations can be performed safely
while contributing to efficiency of

The list individual

Owen's years
lengthy. Major innovations include
the introduction of safety hats;
stocking safety goggles in the com-

Lago’s

over-all safety record

is
proof of the Safety Division's ac-
complishments under the leadership
of Mr. Owen. Probably the most
significant accomplishment of all
these plans and efforts is the re-
duction of injuries of all kinds. In
1937, there were an average of 3000
injuries a year. This average was

down to just 500 injuries in 1960, in-
juries that included disabling injuries

Lago Safety Career Oct. 26

‘Floods Refinery;
3.099 Inches Fell

In just three and one-half hours
the morning of Oct. 12 it rained as
hard on the south end of Aruba as it
ever has before. The refinery rain-
measurers reported that in that short
period a total of 5.55 inches of rain
| fell. Heaviest fall was from 8
until 11:30 a.m.

It came down in torrents, sheets,
buckets and waves, In the Admini-

am,

stration Building, rising waters
threatened Public Relatio: Depart-
ment first-floor dweller Appropo
was that cry of old, "Take to the

hills boys, the dam’s busted!”

It was nip and tuck in the parking
lot across from the GOB whether o1
not small foreign cars would just up
and float away. Reports from the
general shops indicated that work
had to be stopped at Metal Crafts
machine tools because of flood con-
ditions.

The last time Aruba had such a
rain was in the wake of Hurricane
Hazel when eight inches fell Oct aL,
1954. This was for a twenty-four-
hour period and it’s doubtful that the
downpour was more severe than the

Oct. 12 cloudburst, which, incident-
ally, occurred seven years later al-
most to the day.

Hurricane Anna was heralded in
with quite a torrential downpou:
from 7 a.m. July 20 to 7 a.m. July 21
when a total of 4.46 inches fell. This,
too, is a twenty-four-hour rainfall
period compared to Oct. 12 and its
extremely heavy fall in just three

and one-half hours

Rejuvination of Lago Roads Underway =

Rejuvination of major refinery roads
and streets in Seroe Colorado began
the last week in September. When the
job is finished approximately five miles
of roadway will have been treated.
Completion date for Seroe Colorado
work will be about Nov, 1. The main
refinery roadwork will commence then.

The work started Sept. 25 when the
road section between Gate 8 and Gate
5 was rejuvinated. The entire section
was swept clean with the road sweeper.
A tar truck next sprayed RC-O cut-
back asphalt on the roadway. This
acts as a seal and also is a bond for
dust-free granite chips spread on the
roadway in the third part of the oper-
ation. After the granite chips were
spread from a hopper and leveled out
by hand a road roller passed over the
roadway to give it a compact, smooth
and durable finish.

In the refinery, the main road will
be rejuvinated from Gate 2 to the Acid THIS FRESHLY oiled road in the tank farm has the

Pier Access Road
Open for Traffic

Lago’s new finger pier access road was recently
opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Starting at
Gate 2 the road initially leads to No. 3 Finger Pier.
At an intersection just south of tank No. 88 it branches
off into an access road for No. 2 and No. 1 Finger
Piers. Vehicles can go no farther than No, 1 Finger
Pier, but pedestrians can continue on to the East Pier.

This access road runs southwest and is parallel to
the main refinery road that runs past the general
shops. It runs south of the fire truck garage where it is
at its narrowest.

Traffic entering the new access road must first clear
a control point near Gate 2, Automatic swing gates
controlled by the Gate 2 patrolman serve as a control.
They can be opened or closed without the patrolman
leaving his Gate 2 station. Only authorized employees
with dock pass privileges may enter the access road.
Seamen, of course, will use the new road to go to and
from various finger piers. A security fence along the
road prevents unauthorized persons from entering the F A

During 1960, the employee sugges- |

tion system of Standard Oil Comp-
any (New Jersey) and its affiliated
companies surpassed all previous re-
s in ideas adopted and awards
paid. According to the company's
1960 Coin-Your-Ideas annual report,
employees of the worldwide Jersey
organization submitted 33,249 sug-
gestions, of which 10,133 were adopt-
ed. Employee awards totaled $384,251
for the year. The previous record
year was 1959 when awards totaled
$345,494.

The highest award last year was
$4000 granted to Carlos Rabb and
Don Cox of Interstate Oil Pipe Line
Company, a Jersey Standard affiliate
Their suggestion benefitted another
Jersey Standard affiliate by chane-
ing metering facilities at two plants
receiving liquified petroleum gas
products from Interstate lines in the
Baton Rouge area, Ideas accepted
from foreign affiliates increased by
10 per cent over the previous year.

Last year, Lago awarded a total
of Fis. 20,100 to CYI winners.

Jersey Standard’s Coin-Your-Ideas
program was initiated in 1918. Since
that time, more than $3,000,000 has
been paid to employees for ideas
which Jersey feels have helped to in-
crease the efficiency of the company
and its affiliates

Cold Storage Building Dismantled

Facility Was Constructed in 1930

Lago's cold storage building is no
more. The structure, which dates
back to its 1930 construction date,
has been totaly dismantled. Nothing
remains of the once sturdy double-
slab construction, which was west of
No. 1 Powerhouse, except the bare
cement flooring.

Because cold storage facilities by
necessity must be built of double
slab walls and ceilings and insulation
cork of several inches in thicknes
such an installation is nearly as dif-
ficult to demolish as it is to erect.
Before the walls and ceiling slab
could be dismantled, old ammonia-
cooling coils, cork insulation and
wood framing had to be ripped out.
Steel beams came down from roofing
beams and had to be burned through
by welders. The six-inch and four-
inch-thick slabs had be cut into sec-
tions with pneumatic rivet busters.
Cork insulation, nearly eight inches
thick, separated the outer and inner
concrete slabs.

Slabs had to be cut into sections so
they could be lifted with a crane and
loaded onto a low-boy trailer. The
slabs were then hauled away for pos-
sible future bulk on the harbor reef.

Thirty -Year Men
Honored Oct. 11
For Long Service

Several ’’Firsts’ occurred
Lago’s thirty-year awards cere-
mony held Oct. 11 in connection
with a special management staff
meeting, The two long-service em-
ployees honored, Frans C. C. Monte
and Dominico Maduro, were the first
to receive newly-designed service
certificates which for the first time
bore the signature of W. A. Murray,
Lago’s new president.

The meeting was presided by F. C.
Donovan, new Lago vice president

and general manager, and the his- |

tories of both men were outlined by
J. R. Proterra, new Mechanical De-
partment superintendent.

Along with the new came the cus-
tomary old. Both. Mr. Monte, electri-

cian A in Mechanical-Electrical, and |

Mr. Maduro, welder A in Mechanical-
Metal Crafts, joined the company
when it was in its infant stages.
Another who qualified for his thirty-
year service certificate and emblem

was Johannes Tromp, controlman in|

Process-Acid and Edeleanu, who was
unable to attend the special meeting.

In greeting the two men present,
Mr. Donovan cited the refinery’s
newness when they started employ-
ment thirty years ago. He added that
there were no more than 2000 em-
ployees at the time. Mr. Donovan
told the thirty-year men that they had
joined a group that numbered just
272 employees, all of whom had
achieved thirty years’ service during
Lago’s history.

Mr. Proterra first discussed the
service history of Mr. Monte. Frans
knows as much about the electrical
equipment in both powerhouses as
any one at Lago,” Mr. Proterra said.
"That's saying quite a lot,” he added.
Mr. Monte came to Aruba from Su-

siderably reduced sample lag time. To
be useful in controlling process oper-
ations, sample analysis is required
immediately.

| The main advantage of Mr. Wal-

| formerly connected to the wall of a
line pulled foreign matter into the

| readings and continuous plugging of
| the analyzer. This plugging called for
daily cleaning of some standard con-
nections to assure
tion. The new connection, by putting
|the probe in the middle of the prod-
| uct stream, draws a more represent-
| ative sample.

The August award was Mr. Wal-
|ker’s first. In addition, for having
| the CYI-of-the-Month, Mr.
received an engraved penknife as a
premium. A total of Fls. 2030 was

n’s system of establishing payment
ve been announced, Common anni-

the plan; all payments of Lago Thrift Plan loans and withdrawals will

be made by check instead of cash.

A six-month cycle has been set up
during which Thrift Plan payments
will be paid on the first payday of
each month. This cycle will be com-
pleted in April, 1962, after which
| everyone’s anniversary date will fall
on the first payday in a month. In
the past, an employee was eligible
to obtain a loan or withdrawal
exactly six months to a day follow-
|ing his previous transaction. Every
|day a small number of transactions
had to be processed. Under the new
plan, all transactions will be handled
on a once-monthly basis.

During the six-month transition
period, no one will have to wait even

These intervals will continue through
April. In May, 1962, all loan and
withdrawal anniversary dates will
fall on paydays and all employees
will be re-eligible for transactions
exactly on their paydays six months
following a previous loan or with-
drawal.

Payments for all loan or with-

The list individual

Rejuvination of Lago Roads Underway =

Rejuvination of major refinery roads
and streets in Seroe Colorado began
the last week in September. When the
job is finished approximately five miles
of roadway will have been treated.
Completion date for Seroe Colorado
work will be about Nov, 1. The main
refinery roadwork will commence then.

The work started Sept. 25 when the
road section between Gate 8 and Gate
5 was rejuvinated. The entire section
was swept clean with the road sweeper.
A tar truck next sprayed RC-O cut-
back asphalt on the roadway. This
acts as a seal and also is a bond for
dust-free granite chips spread on the
roadway in the third part of the oper-
ation. After the granite chips were
spread from a hopper and leveled out
by hand a road roller passed over the
roadway to give it a compact, smooth
and durable finish.

In the refinery, the main road will
be rejuvinated from Gate 2 to the Acid THIS FRESHLY oiled road in the tank farm has the

Pier Access Road
Open for Traffic

Lago’s new finger pier access road was recently
opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Starting at
Gate 2 the road initially leads to No. 3 Finger Pier.
At an intersection just south of tank No. 88 it branches
off into an access road for No. 2 and No. 1 Finger
Piers. Vehicles can go no farther than No, 1 Finger
Pier, but pedestrians can continue on to the East Pier.

This access road runs southwest and is parallel to
the main refinery road that runs past the general
shops. It runs south of the fire truck garage where it is
at its narrowest.

Traffic entering the new access road must first clear
a control point near Gate 2, Automatic swing gates
controlled by the Gate 2 patrolman serve as a control.
They can be opened or closed without the patrolman
leaving his Gate 2 station. Only authorized employees
with dock pass privileges may enter the access road.
Seamen, of course, will use the new road to go to and
from various finger piers. A security fence along the
road prevents unauthorized persons from entering the F A

During 1960, the employee sugges- |

tion system of Standard Oil Comp-
any (New Jersey) and its affiliated
companies surpassed all previous re-
s in ideas adopted and awards
paid. According to the company's
1960 Coin-Your-Ideas annual report,
employees of the worldwide Jersey
organization submitted 33,249 sug-
gestions, of which 10,133 were adopt-
ed. Employee awards totaled $384,251
for the year. The previous record
year was 1959 when awards totaled
$345,494.

The highest award last year was
$4000 granted to Carlos Rabb and
Don Cox of Interstate Oil Pipe Line
Company, a Jersey Standard affiliate
Their suggestion benefitted another
Jersey Standard affiliate by chane-
ing metering facilities at two plants
receiving liquified petroleum gas
products from Interstate lines in the
Baton Rouge area, Ideas accepted
from foreign affiliates increased by
10 per cent over the previous year.

Last year, Lago awarded a total
of Fis. 20,100 to CYI winners.

Jersey Standard’s Coin-Your-Ideas
program was initiated in 1918. Since
that time, more than $3,000,000 has
been paid to employees for ideas
which Jersey feels have helped to in-
crease the efficiency of the company
and its affiliates

Cold Storage Building Dismantled

Facility Was Constructed in 1930

Lago's cold storage building is no
more. The structure, which dates
back to its 1930 construction date,
has been totaly dismantled. Nothing
remains of the once sturdy double-
slab construction, which was west of
No. 1 Powerhouse, except the bare
cement flooring.

Because cold storage facilities by
necessity must be built of double
slab walls and ceilings and insulation
cork of several inches in thicknes
such an installation is nearly as dif-
ficult to demolish as it is to erect.
Before the walls and ceiling slab
could be dismantled, old ammonia-
cooling coils, cork insulation and
wood framing had to be ripped out.
Steel beams came down from roofing
beams and had to be burned through
by welders. The six-inch and four-
inch-thick slabs had be cut into sec-
tions with pneumatic rivet busters.
Cork insulation, nearly eight inches
thick, separated the outer and inner
concrete slabs.

Slabs had to be cut into sections so
they could be lifted with a crane and
loaded onto a low-boy trailer. The
slabs were then hauled away for pos-
sible future bulk on the harbor reef.
