GRIM REMINDER of Aruba’s worst traffic accident this year is perch-
ed atop a pedestal near the Balashi water plant. Two men lost their
lives when this sedan struck a utility pole at a high speed.

Think About It...
It Could Be You

In most instances figures, statistics, percentages and, in general,
all forms of numbers make dull reading. Usually, the numbers are so
overwhelming their significance is lost on the majority of people un-
trained in the science of mathematics. But every once in a while a
figure pops up that, because of its startling nature, impresses and is
easily understood. One such number came through the other day.

It was the number four. It was the count of dead in Aruba traffic
accidents for the first three months of 1959.

Little practice or understanding of statistics is needed to appreciate
the full impact of four dead — needlessly killed in traffic accidents on
a quiet little island with no more than 100 miles of asphalt-topped
roads and 90 miles of gravel roads. To multiply the four dead for the
remaining three quarters of 1959 produces the number 16. It could
be that 16 people — possibly husbands, brothers, sisters, mothers,
fathers, sons or daughters — will be killed this year. Sounds rather
astounding, doesn’t it? It becomes even more so when you stop for a
moment and think of the island that is your home. It is small, quiet,
easy-going and delightfully sun-drenched. The pace is pleasantly
moderate.

Yet, cars lurch and sway at high speeds racing down Aruba’s roads.
Tires squeal as vehicles scream around corners. Dust flies as wheels
scrape sides of roads while passing. Where is everyone rushing to?
Death? Could be, it was for four during the first three months of 1959.

Near the water plant is a pedestal. Mounted on the pedestal is a
mashed car. Two of the year’s four dead were killed in that auto-
mobile. The sign below the crumbled frame reads: This could be you.

Think about it, because it could be you.

Pensa Un Rato...
Por Tabata Bo

Den mayoria caso cifra, estadistica, percentaje y, en general, tur
sorto di numbernan no ta interesante pa leza. Generalmente e num-
bernan ta asina fastioso cu nan significancia ta bai perdi pa mayoria
hende cu no ta entrend den matematica. Pero de vez en cuando ta
sali un cifra cu, pa inotibo di su naturaleza, ta haci impresion y ta
worde comprendi facilmente. Un tal cifra a presenta su mes poco
dia pasa.

Tabata e cifra cuatro. Tabata e conteo di e cantidad di morto den
desgracianan di trafico durante e promer tres luna di 1959 na Aruba.

No tin mester di mucho practico of comprendemento di estadistica
pa aprecia e completo impacto di cuatro morto — mata innecesaria-
mente den desgracianan di trafico ariba un isla chikito cu no mas cu
100 milla di camina asfalta y 90 milla di camina di terra. Multiplica e|
cuatro morto pa e restante tres cuartal di e anja y bo ta yega na 16.
Anto por ta cu 16 hende — posible esposo, ruman, mama, tata of yiu|
— lo muri e anja aki. Ta zona poco duro? Esaki ta bira peor ainda
ora bo para un momento y pensa di e isla cu ta bo cas. E ta un isla
chikito, trankil y keto, banjé den un maravilloso solo. E paso di bida)
ta agradablemente modera.

Y toch, autonan ta cruza na velocidad halto ariba carreteranan di
Aruba. Tires ta grita segun e vehiculonan ta dobla skina. Stof ta bula
ora wielnan cai for di camino ora autonan ta pasa. Ta unda tur hende
ta bai cu tanto apuro asina? Nan ta corre contra morto? Podiser,
cuatro a topa e destino aki den promer tres luna di 1959. |

Cerca di planta di awa tin un pedestal. Monta ariba e pedestal ta un
auto kibra na werki. Dos die cuatro morto pa e anja a socede den e
auto aki. E borchi bao di e resto di e auto ta bisa: Hsaki por tabata
bo.

Pensa un rato, pasobra por tabata bo! |

A unique tour group from Noord visited the refinery and Seroe Colorado

70 years old or older. Honors for the eldest went to Isabella Semeleer—87
of age and in excellent health! The trip was organized by Rev. B.
Anink in connection with Lago’s Public Relations Department and was
sponsored by the Rovary Club of Aruba.

Among the elder Aruba residents who made the trip—it was the farthest
from home that many had ever been—was Lago annuitant Augustin Figa-

three sons employed at Lago. Another guest, Leo Kelly,

They call it a "Million-Dollar Shop.” That’s the pet phrase
shop men usually toss at newcomers or visitors on tour. Though
this phrase actually refers to capital investment—total cost of
all the shop’s 70 machine tools—it can well be tagged to other
facets of this important Mechanical Department section.

For one thing, they’ve got a million-dollar safety record,
though it’s doubtful that any amount of money could compen-
sate for a ten-year period in which no disabling injuries have
occurred. Since the late Forties, not one Machine Shop employee
has incurred an on-the-job disabling injury.

And it’s hard to place a value on the 24-hour-a-day reliability
of refinery equipment which is kept in A-1 condition through
the shop’s top-notch workmanship and preventive maintenance
program. Dependability of production machinery could well be
worth several millions of dollars in over-all refinery operations.

Even that pet phrase, ’’Million-Dollar Shop,” can be mislead-
ing. Actually, it would take at least $2,000,000 in U.S. currency
to replace all Machine Shop equipment. Machine tool prices
have kept pace with inflation.

Like most machine shops everywhere, Lago’s installation is
a confusing maze to most visitors. A babble of high-
pitched sounds plays havoe with the untrained ear. Diamond-
hard cutting tools tear metal from metal with better than hair-
size accuracy. Drill bits set up almost unhearable frequencies
as they bite through harder-than-steel alloys. Cutting oils cool
down red-hot milling cutters to produce an almost-sweet odor,
familiar to machinists everywhere. These drilling, cutting,
grinding operations are as precise and calculated as engineers
and operators can make them. Tolerances can be held to .0005
of an inch—less than one-third the thickness of a human hair.

It takes highly skilled operators and precise equipment to meet

Machine Shop Ta Vale Un Milion

Nan ta yame’le "’Million-Dollar Shop.” Esaki ta e nomber fa-

Pa un cos, nan tin un record di seguridad cu vale un milion,
maske ta dudoso cu un suma di placa lo por compensa pa un

conditions. It also has greater range.

Displacing 2900 tons, the Koote-
nay is highly maneuverable through
the use of twin screws-powered by
geared steam turbines-and twin rud-
ders. Her rounded contours are de-
signed to counter ice conditions in
arctic and antarctic operations as
well as counter atomic fallout. The
vessel is insulated and air condition-
ed for both fighting efficiency and
personnel comfort.

tral system over a three-line cable
which is pole-supported. Eventually,
in about one year, 44 crude tanks
will feed information electronically
to the main receiver and sub-re-
ceiver. Electronic gauging is not
used for figuring volumes supplied
to customers, only refinery require-
ments.

Both receivers resemble "ham”
radio sets. The main unit is equip-
ped to handle 24 tanks. The sub-
unit handles the remaining 20, Each
tank is represented on the consoles
by a light and switch unit. The
light is the high-level alarm. The
switch is used to read crude levels.
A calibrated dial is used for reading
temperatures. For example, the ope-
rator wants to know the quantity of
erude in No, 16 tank. He flips No.
16 switch and immediately, through
sensitive electronic controls, gets a
crude tank level reading. Two dials
on the receiver give him the level
in feet and inches (the latter in one-
sixteenth increments). He then
reads the temperature of the crude.
A reference table quickly converts
any readings into the correct num-
ber of barrels in the tank.

Cost of the system, including in-
stallation, is $2500 a tank. The pro-
ject has been a joint effort of prac-
tically all Mechanical Department

erafts including instrument, elec-
trical, pipe, metal trades and ma-
sons.

"Million-Dollar Shop’

(Continued from page 4)
these critical requirements. Skilled
tradesmen number nearly 90 in the
shop. Most of them received their
training in the Lago Vocational
School and the shop’s 10,000-hour
apprenticeship program. Training is
still a never-ending shop function.

The Machine Shop, one of the re-
finery’s early installations, has the
major role of maintaining, over-
hauling and repairing all of Lago’s
mechanical equipment. This is a
large order. A big refinery requires
a vast amount of pumps, motors,
compressors, valves, engines and
special machines to keep in profit-
able production. Every month the
Machine Shop handles approximate-
ly 400 job order requests which may
range from manufacturing a _ spe-
cial bolt to re-vamping a giant pow-
erhouse turbine rotor.

A variety of machine tools is
located in the shop area of 24,500
square feet. There are numerous
lathes that cut metal off cylindrical
pieces, bore precision holes and
chase threads; milling machines
that cut gears, mill flat surfaces
and bore bearings; grinders’ that
finish metal surfaces, both flat and
round, to super-fine tolerances; tool
grinders that keep machine tool cut-
ters and drills sharp and_ true;
shapers that cut gear racks, inter-
nal key ways and quandrant gears,
and a dynamic balancer that balan-
ces pump rotors, turbine rotors and
many other critical parts. In addi-
tion to grinding tools, Tool Room
employees maintain and check out
hand tools to tradesmen.

Most expensive machine tool in
the shop is the Lucas _ horizontal

boring mill that cost $81,000 install-

ed in 1955. Through preventive
maintenance and careful handling,
the shop still uses a major machine
tool that it acquired back in 1929.
It’s the gigantic No. 51 engine lathe
which can handle cylindrical pieces
up to six and one-half feet in dia-
meter. Purchased in second hand
condition, the tool is in much better
condition than when first installed

Shop Unique

Lago’s geographical location has
made its Machine Shop unique in
the refining industry. Stateside re-
fineries do not require a major
shop setup. Repairs are contracted
to outside firms and replacement
parts are readily available. In this
area, even with air freight service,
it may be cheaper and quicker to
repair a piece of equipment rather
than order a new part.

When the foundry was still in
operation at Lago, it was possible
for the shop to manufacture many
intricate parts from the initial step
of pouring the mold to the final
machining operation. Such manufac-
turing is not economically feasible
now, but in an emergency the shop
can produce a highly critical part in
its full run of machining operations.

A key word in the shop is safety.
Every employee receives a _ five-
minute safety talk each week and
safety films are shown whenever
possible. The men are constantly
drilled in safe work habits.

All machines are equipped with
proper protective guards and ope-
rators are thoroughly trained in
their operation as another safety
precaution. High on the safety list,
too, is the shop’s good housekeeping.

A unique tour group from Noord visited the refinery and Seroe Colorado
April 14. The group’s uniqueness lay in the fact that all 54 visitors were
70 years old or older. Honors for the eldest went to Isabella Semeleer—87
of age and in excellent health! The trip was organized by Rev. B.
Anink in connection with Lago’s Public Relations Department and was
sponsored by the Rovary Club of Aruba.

Among the elder Aruba residents who made the trip—it was the farthest
from home that many had ever been—was Lago annuitant Augustin Figa-
roa, 73, who retired eight years ago from Mechanical-Yard. He now has
three sons employed at Lago.

Assisting Father Anink were Sis-

teer helpers. He remarked that the
district is a healthy spot. "Its resi-
dents,’ he said, "have simple tastes
which contribute to a long and hap-

to include all Noord residents over
60 years of age in the tour, But he
found the number in that age group

so great that he had to limit the

An interesting anecdote was of-

perience in obtaining work in the
old phosphate company, once loca-
ted in Seroe Colorado. The time was
the early 1900’s. He said he got up
at 3 a.m. and walked all the way

seek employment when work start-

avail. The hiring boss was off that
day. Mr. Semeleer was told to come
back the following day! He return-
ed home foot-sore and weary. Being
persistent he arose again at 3 a.m.
and walked half the length of the
island to the job site. This time the
hiring boss was in and Mr. Seme-
leer got the job.

| The Gilbarco system, manufac-
tured by Gilbert and Barker which
is a Standard Oil Company (N.J.)
affiliate, is an electronic remote
| tank gauging device that is relative-
ly new in the industry. These sy-
stems have just come into use dur-
ing the last decade. This is the first
| such setup for Lago- It will greatly
| facilitate unloading crude and pump-

ing crude feed to units in the re-
finery through highly accurate

crude tank gauging. In addition, the
system assists the pump house of-
fice operator in supervising man-
power used in opening and closing
tank valves.

In effect, the

ct than reading a tank by
gauge. Also incorporated in the sy-
em is a “high-level” alarm. This

|
warns the operator when crude level

is five feet from the top of the
tank. Overflow is prevented which
is an important cost-saving func-

tion of the system. Each tank tied
into the system is equipped with an

| electrical temperature reading de-
vice which relays readings to an
electronic transmitter adjacent to

the tank. The temperature unit con-
tains nine bulbs in a tube which
reaches from tank top to bottom.
In this manner, average tempera-
ture of the crude can be interpret-
ted by the main receiving unit.

followed by a swimming party at
Rodgers Beach. Activities held the

next day included the special island
photo and scenic tours plus a swim-
ming party and picnic at Eagle
Beach. Also on the agenda was an
informal lunch at the Savaneta
Marine Camp for Kootenay officers.
In the evening, Her Brittanic Ma-
s Vice-Consul held a reception

at his residence for ship’s officers
and guests.

The visit was the first for the
Kootenay, a sleek 366-foot sub-

marine killer with a top speed in ex-
cess of 25 knots. Canadian built,
the destroyer escort was commis-
sioned in 1954. Her namesake had a
distinguished World War II record
and was scrapped in 1946 because
of obsolence.

Advanced in armament and sub-
marine detection capabilities, the
modern Kootenay’s fighting arms
include twin three-inch 70 caliber
anti-aircraft cannon and twin three-
inch 50 caliber cannon. Anti-sub-
marine weapons are two triple mor-
tar mountings and homing torpe-
does. Its new sonar submarine de-
tecting device is the product of in-
tensive study and exhaustive trials
and is designed to overcome limita-
tions imposed by unfavorable water
temperatures, salinity and other
conditions. It also has greater range.

Displacing 2900 tons, the Koote-
nay is highly maneuverable through
the use of twin screws-powered by
geared steam turbines-and twin rud-
ders. Her rounded contours are de-
signed to counter ice conditions in
arctic and antarctic operations as
well as counter atomic fallout. The
vessel is insulated and air condition-
ed for both fighting efficiency and
personnel comfort.

The Kootenay's name is taken from) durante

tral system over a three-line cable
which is pole-supported. Eventually,
in about one year, 44 crude tanks
will feed information electronically
to the main receiver and sub-re-
ceiver. Electronic gauging is not
used for figuring volumes supplied
to customers, only refinery require-
ments.

Both receivers resemble "ham”
radio sets. The main unit is equip-
ped to handle 24 tanks. The sub-
unit handles the remaining 20, Each
tank is represented on the consoles
by a light and switch unit. The
light is the high-level alarm. The
switch is used to read crude levels.
A calibrated dial is used for reading
temperatures. For example, the ope-
rator wants to know the quantity of
erude in No, 16 tank. He flips No.
16 switch and immediately, through
sensitive electronic controls, gets a
crude tank level reading. Two dials
on the receiver give him the level
in feet and inches (the latter in one-
sixteenth increments). He then
reads the temperature of the crude.
A reference table quickly converts
any readings into the correct num-
ber of barrels in the tank.

Cost of the system, including in-
stallation, is $2500 a tank. The pro-
ject has been a joint effort of prac-
tically all Mechanical Department

erafts including instrument, elec-
trical, pipe, metal trades and ma-
sons.

"Million-Dollar Shop’

(Continued from page 4)
these critical requirements. Skilled
tradesmen number nearly 90 in the
shop. Most of them received their
training in the Lago Vocational
School and the shop’s 10,000-hour
apprenticeship program. Training is
still a never-ending shop function.

The Machine Shop, one of the re-
finery’s early installations, has the
major role of maintaining, over-
hauling and repairing all of Lago’s
mechanical equipment. This is a
large order. A big refinery requires
a vast amount of pumps, motors,
compressors, valves, engines and
special machines to keep in profit-
able production. Every month the
Machine Shop handles approximate-
ly 400 job order requests which may
range from manufacturing a _ spe-
cial bolt to re-vamping a giant pow-
erhouse turbine rotor.

A variety of machine tools is
located in the shop area of 24,500
square feet. There are numerous
lathes that cut metal off cylindrical
pieces, bore precision holes and
chase threads; milling machines
that cut gears, mill flat surfaces
and bore bearings; grinders’ that
finish metal surfaces, both flat and
round, to super-fine tolerances; tool
grinders that keep machine tool cut-
ters and drills sharp and_ true;
shapers that cut gear racks, inter-
nal key ways and quandrant gears,
and a dynamic balancer that balan-
ces pump rotors, turbine rotors and
many other critical parts. In addi-
tion to grinding tools, Tool Room
employees maintain and check out
hand tools to tradesmen.

Most expensive machine tool in
the shop is the Lucas _ horizontal

boring mill that cost $81,000 install-

ed in 1955. Through preventive
maintenance and careful handling,
the shop still uses a major machine
tool that it acquired back in 1929.
It’s the gigantic No. 51 engine lathe
which can handle cylindrical pieces
up to six and one-half feet in dia-
meter. Purchased in second hand
condition, the tool is in much better
condition than when first installed

Shop Unique

Lago’s geographical location has
made its Machine Shop unique in
the refining industry. Stateside re-
fineries do not require a major
shop setup. Repairs are contracted
to outside firms and replacement
parts are readily available. In this
area, even with air freight service,
it may be cheaper and quicker to
repair a piece of equipment rather
than order a new part.

When the foundry was still in
operation at Lago, it was possible
for the shop to manufacture many
intricate parts from the initial step
of pouring the mold to the final
machining operation. Such manufac-
turing is not economically feasible
now, but in an emergency the shop
can produce a highly critical part in
its full run of machining operations.

A key word in the shop is safety.
Every employee receives a _ five-
minute safety talk each week and
safety films are shown whenever
possible. The men are constantly
drilled in safe work habits.

All machines are equipped with
proper protective guards and ope-
rators are thoroughly trained in
their operation as another safety
precaution. High on the safety list,
too, is the shop’s good housekeeping.

Machine Shop Is Worth A Million

They call it a Million Dollar Shop Thats the pet phrase

this phrase actually refers to capital investmenttotal cost of HijKljyi ffi AmEI

facets of this important Mechanical Department section
For one thing theyve got a million dollar safety record
though its doubtful that any amount of money could compensate
for a ten year period in which no disabling injuries have Hh AfsGtsxSml te fed eUKyBH
occurred Since the late Forties not one Machine Shop employee
has incurred an on-the-job disabling injury
And its hard to place a value on the 24-hour-a-day reliability
of refinery equipment which is kept in A l condition through
the shops top notch workmanship and preventive maintenance
program Dependability of production machinery could well be
worth several millions of dollars in over all refinery operations
Even that pet phrase Million Dollar Shop can be misleading
Actually it would take at least 2000000 in US currency
to replace all Machine Shop equipment Machine tool prices
have kept pace with inflation
Like most machine shops everywhere Lagos installation is
a confusing maze to most visitors A babble of high
