Calendar Pictures Again
To Be Employee-Taken

Each Accepted Color Transparency
Will Bring Photographer Fls. 100

Promptcd by the excellent acceptance of the 1959 Lago calendar

made up of twelve einployee-taken photographs, the Public Relations
Department has again decided to conduct a similar calender contest.
As was the case last year, employees submitting selected photographs
for the 1960 company calendar will be rewarded Fls. 100 for each

effort.

Color transparencies of any size,
depicting any Aruba subject and
taken by Lago Employees or annui-
tants are eligible for the cash prizes.
The contest for twelve photographs
is open now, entries are being acept-
ed until June 20. This is a some-
what longer period of time than
was allowed last year. It is thought
that with additional time, photo-
graphers will be able to augment
their selections with photographs
taken and presently being processed
or, perhaps, those planned to be
taken with still enough time to have
them processed and submitted. The
additional contest period will give
the working amateur photographer
time to spend weekends looking for
calendar shots.

Calendar selections will be made
by members of the Public Relations
Department.

The rules laid down for the com-
petition are simple enough:

1. Only original full-color trans-
parencies will be considered. Do not
submit color negatives, hand-color-
ed prints or any printed or publish-
ed color photographs.

2. Submitted transparencies must
be of Aruba subjects: people, scenes,
places or things.

3. Only work submitted by bona
fide employees or annuitants will

ocupa na e momento aki. Durante
henter su carera na Lago, Sr. Baird
nunca a sostene un accidente cu per-
dida di tempo.

the competition become the proper-
ty of Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd.
While every effort will be made to
return to their owners the transpa-
rencies used, this cannot be guar-
anteed.

5. Pictures used in the calendar
which depict recognizable persons
must have signed releases submit-
to the department, stating that the
person or persons have no objection
to having their pictures used in the
calendar.

6. Employees of the Public Rela-
tions Department are not eligible
to enter the competition. The de-
partment, however, reserves the right
to use staff-taken pictures in the
calendar if there are not 12 entries
of sufficiently high caliber submit-
ted.

Transparencies submitted will get
the best of care while being examin-
ed. Before mailing or delivering pic-
tures to the Public Relations Depart-
ment, photographers should be sure
their names and addresses are clear-
ly indicated.

YMCA Opens
Annual Drive
For °59 Funds

Just over one year old and with
accomplishments that belie its age,
the Young Men’s Christian Associa-
tion is appealing to the Aruba com-
munity for funds to continue its
work with the youth of the island.
The appeal is in the form of the Y's
annual fund drive.

Last year, at about the same time,
the Y held its first fund drive. Re-
latively unknown and without ac-
complishments to prove its merit,
the Y, nevertheless, received nearly
Fis. 30,000 from Aruba residents
and businesses. The purpose of the
YMCA soon proved its worthwhile-
ness as its membership leaped from
14 to 549. Both inside and out, the
Y grounds have grown in leaps and
bounds to maintain pace with the
number of eager youths clamoring
for the recreation and instruction
the organization provides.

Inside the building there is a li-
brary, constantly being enlarged, in
addition to facilities for table ten-
nis, checkers, dominoes, pocket bil-
liards, puzzles, table games, televi-
sion and music. Outside, the play-
ing area has been fenced in and
area provided for horseshoes, bas-
ketball, shuffleboard, softball, hand-
ball and gymnastics. The Y has
drawn from many of the island's
leading athletic figures to instruct

there are also no restrictions on
size, it should be remembered that
the bigger the transparency, the bet-
ter the picture made from it.
Anything from 35 mm to 8x10 inches
is acceptable. Pictures will be judg-
ed on the basis of focus, color, com-
position and subject. Size will not
enter significantly into the judges’
appraisals.

The '59 calendar was made up of
employees’ photographs chosen in a
similar contest. In other years, staff-
taken pictures resulted in calendars
of Aruba faces, animal life, scenery
and refinery scenes. All of these,
plus beach shots, festivals, fishing,
driftwood, sand, rocks, towns, streets,
trees, flowers, and very nearly
everything else, are fair game. The
only stipulation is that the subject

must be Aruba-connected in some
way.
its members. Recently, Sugar Boy

Nando, Netherlands Antillian middle-
weight champion, conducted classes
in boxing

The YMCA points to the 8125 to-
tal attendance figure as indication
of the interest Aruba’s youth has
shown in the organization’s pro-
grams. It points to this interest
when requesting funds to support
the Y as an investment in the future
of the young men of Aruba.

Five Get 30-Year Emblems

At Mareh Il

Ceremonies

A cross-section of the refinery was represented at the 30-year ser-

vice award ceremonies held March

11 at the GOB. Men from the Me-

chanical, Process, Industrial Relations, TSD and Accounting Depart-

ments were presented coveted 30-

year service emblems and certifi-

cates at the special management staff meeting.

The five long-service employees
are: Maximo Kelly, corporal B in
Mechanical-Carpenter, Victor A.
Baird, assistant shift foreman in
Process-Utilities, Jan H. Beaujon,
personal relations assistant in In-
dustrial Relations, Reuben C. Peter-
son, assistant shift leader in TSD-
Laboratory and Jose J. P. Oduber,
division head of Tabulating & Sta-
tistics Division in Accounting.

In congratulating the five 30-year
emblem recipients, General Manager
W. A. Murray told them that they
had played a significant part in the
growth of Lago from an infant in
the industry 30 years ago to the
largest oil refinery in the world.

Maximo Kelly began his Lago ser-
vice March 11, 1929 when he started
as a laborer in the yard craft. He
remained there until Feb. 15, 1948
when he transferred to Mechanical-
Carpenter where he is still employ-
ed. Mr. Kelly was promoted to cor-
poral B Jan. 1, 1955. His entire 30
years of service have been attained
without a deductible absence and he
has never had a lost-time industrial
accident.

Victor A. Baird came to Lago Dec.
20, 1928 as a fireman in the Power-
house where he is still employed.
Progressing up the ranks over the
years he was promoted to assistant
shift foreman March 1, 1958, the
position he holds at the present time. |
During his entire 30 years at Lago,
Mr. Baird has never had a lost-time
industrial accident.

Jan H. Beaujon joined Lago Jan.
5, 1929 as a secretary and after
later serving as a Storehouse clerk
transferred to Industrial Relations
Aug. 9, 1931. Four years later, he
transferred to the former Engineer-
ing Department and remained there
until June 2, 1936. He subsequently
transferred to the Industrial Rela-
tions Department where he is still
employed. When presented his ser-
vice certificate, Mr. Beaujon was
commended for his untiring public
service in Aruba. Last year he re-

ceived the order of Orange Nassau
and the Silver Carnation from the
government for his civic leadership.

Reuben C. Peterson started at La-
go Jan. 30, 1929 as a second class
oil inspector in TSD-Laboratory. Still
employed in that department, Mr.
Peterson was promoted to assistant
shift leader Feb. 1, 1946, the position
he holds at the present time. He has
never had a lost-time industrial ac-
cident during his 30 years with the
company.

Jose J. P. Oduber has been a La-
go employee since March 1, 1929.
He started as a shipping clerk in the
Accounting Department where he is
still employed. In March, 1945, he
was promoted to division head B and
served in this capacity until March
31, 1946 when his title became divi-
sion head-Tabulating & Statistics.
Mr. Oduber was also cited at the
award ceremonies for his outstand-
ing contributions to Aruba civic ac-
tivities over the years.

Lago Hospital Nurse Eveline Santjes.
To further her education in nursing,
Eveline left Lago March 26 for ad-
vanced pediatric nurses’ training in
Amsterdam. But for over a year,
the two were on the hospital’s nur-
ses staff performing their duties in
a professional and highly efficient
manner.

Like her mother, who has been a
Lago Hospital nurse for nearly 24
years, daughter Eveline’s ambition
as a youngster was to be a nurse.
With mother’s inspiration and the
example she set, Eveline pursued a
successful career in the profession.

After graduating from Maria Col-
lege in Oranjestad in 1951, she first
took employment at Lago. Eveline
was a junior clerk in the Executive

to school, she and her
mother were a unique mother-daughter nursing team
at Lago Hospital.

Office for a _ year. The call to
nursing became stronger so she went
to Holland, with mother’s help, and
enrolled in a midwifery school, R. K.
Vroedvrouwen in Heerlen, This was
in 1952. Three years later she was
graduated from that institution with
honors. Eveline’s nursing education
didn’t end there. With the graces of
her mother she enrolled in a general
nursing course at St. Elisabeth Gast-
huis in Amsterdam and graduated
from that program in 1957. Eveline
and her mother’s great desire was
to work together so Eveline return-
ed to Aruba and gained employment
at Lago Hospital. Before she left for
her advanced schooling in Amster-
dam, Eveline was performing a com-
mendable nursing job in the surgic-
al section of the hospital.

Mother Nita was the sole inspira-
tion for her daughter’s advancement
in nursing circles. She came to Aru-
ba from Surinam in 1934 and was
employed as a nurse at the Eagle
Refinery for a year before commenc-
ing her Lago employment. For the
past 24 years, Nurse Santjes has
performed a highly creditable job as
a Lago nurse. She has worked her
way up through the ranks of junior,
and staff nurses to become head
nurse in the Lago Hospital clinic.
This promotion was effective March
1. During the years, Nurse Santjes
has performed her nursing duties in
all sections of the hospital including
surgical, medical, OB, central supply
and the clinic.

The desire to serve humanity is
not limited to mother and daughter
in the Santjes family. Son Michael is
busy in Holland, making good marks
at Nijmegen. His goal in life is to
become a physician. Just 15, Michael
has many hard years of extensive
study ahead. But with the inspira-
tion he must receive from his mo-
ther Nita and his sister Eveline, Mi-
chael’s goal should be much easier
to attain.

March 7, the four teams of 14 operators plus their as-

for a continuous 24-hour period. Camps were located at
Dos Playa, Quinta, San Jose (Ecury Estate), Balashi and
Sea Grove. Each team was self-sufficient. Transmitting-
receiving equipment was either mobile or powered by port-
able gasoline engine generators and the group prepared
meals in the field.

the club's field day. Though it was the first official field

are especially popular with United States amateurs and
thousands participate annually in cities all over the coun-

Australia and even managed to penetrate the "Iron Cur-

filter plant, the r rvoir itself dat-
ing back to the v arly years of

Lago history. It is tucked away be-
hind the Main Shops alongside the
Storehouse.

The installation began in 1925
when the limestone reservoir was
constructed for the Lago Shipping
Company by Constant De Veer, con-
foreman. Built of locally

gathered and cut stone, the reser-
voir supplied water to seven field
boilers located at the site of the

west end of the present Storehouse
building. The water itself came from
several old wells and was pumped
into the reservoir by a string of
windmills. The fieldboilers supplied
steam for reciprocating pumps which
transferred crude oil to and from
ships and shore tanks. At that time
Lago was merely a transfer point.
The salinity of the well water was
so great that every day one of the
seven boilers had to be shut down
so that boilermakers could re-roll
the leaky tubes.

The reservoir measures nearly 80
feet, two inches, Its capacity is 4302
barrels of water.

In 1930 the company built a low
pressure boiler plant and evapora-
tor plant and the’ reservoir water
was used as_ reserve for the new
boilers which supplied steam to the
refinery and the evaporator plant.

Then in 1945 the laundry’s filter
plant was quickly relocated to its
present reservoir site to filter ship-
hold water for ships going to North
Africa. Plans were altered and the
ships did not take this water so
the filter plant wasn’t used for its
original purpose. Later in the year
shiphold water was filtered at the
plant, stored in the "swimming
pool,’ and mixed with brackish wa-
ter from the Mangel Cora well to
reduce the well’s. salinity content.
This water was used for various re-

An interesting side-light of the
reservoir was the use by an em-
ployee to grow several truck crops

around its perimeter. For several
years, a former Mechanical-Pipe em-
ployee named Meyers grew corn,

maize, papayas, sweet potatoes, avo-
cados and the like which were nur-
tured with water that seeped through
the reservoir’s porous limestone foun-
dation.

The filter plant was operated by
L. R. Croes, process helper B in
Process-Utilities, who started at La-
go Aug. 6, 1933 and retired last
August.

It will be "moth-balled” April 1
as the use of a filter plant is no
longer needed. Lago now purchases
pure water from the government for
boilers and other refinery uses.

Land Ho! ’Tis Aruba on the ho-
rizon undoubtedly found voice in
some leather-lunged mate perched
atop the rigging of a sailing schoon-
er that plied these waters years ago.
Chances are, though, the graceful
three-masted sailing vessel that
breezed by Aruba a couple of weeks
ago had no mate with booming voice
high up on one of the masts, and
no announcement was made of Aru-
ba’s being on the horizon. In fact,
the Belgium barquentine the tropi-
cal trade winds shoved past this
isle has very little in common with
the rigs that carried cargo and boo-
ty a half century and more years
ago. The similarity abruptly ceases
with the form of propulsion and
some design.

To begin with, the sailing vessel
is not as old as might be thought.
While it touches on delightful dreams
of swashbuckling pirates and men of
the sea and full-sailed races across
the oceans with cargoes of tea, wool
and the like, the three-masted bar-
quentine isn’t even as old as the
Lago refinery. Named the Mercator,
it was built for the Royal Belgium
Navy and commissioned in April,
1932. Its 225-foot hull with 35-foot
extreme breadth was fabricated in
the shipyards of Ramage & Gergu-
son, Keith, Scotland.

It is a Belgium Navy cadet train-
ing ship, and is officially listed as
an auxiliary barquentine training
ship. The auxiliary gets in the iden-
tification because unlike the sailing
ships of years ago, the Mercator is
equipped with a single acting six-
cylinder, four stroke oil engine.
When she flashed by the coast of
Aruba, her approximate eight or
nine knots were all wind and sail
generated. She has two decks that
add to her 770 gross tons. When she
passed Aruba she was on her way
to Colon. Registered out of Antwerp,
the Mercator is one of the few re-
maining sailing vessels making
ocean voyages as training ships.

Why is she a barquentine? She is
classed as such because she is
square-rigged on her foremast while
her sails on the main and mizzen
masts are all fore and aft. The Mer-
eator also carried three jib sails.
When she passed Aruba, all her sails
on her foremast were not unfurled.
In their stead was the ship's laundry.
Saturday being wash day in sailing
circles world-wide, the laundry was
flying.

Calendar Pictures Again
To Be Employee-Taken

Each Accepted Color Transparency
Will Bring Photographer Fls. 100

Promptcd by the excellent acceptance of the 1959 Lago calendar

made up of twelve einployee-taken photographs, the Public Relations
Department has again decided to conduct a similar calender contest.
As was the case last year, employees submitting selected photographs
for the 1960 company calendar will be rewarded Fls. 100 for each

effort.

Color transparencies of any size,
depicting any Aruba subject and
taken by Lago Employees or annui-
tants are eligible for the cash prizes.
The contest for twelve photographs
is open now, entries are being acept-
ed until June 20. This is a some-
what longer period of time than
was allowed last year. It is thought
that with additional time, photo-
graphers will be able to augment
their selections with photographs
taken and presently being processed
or, perhaps, those planned to be
taken with still enough time to have
them processed and submitted. The
additional contest period will give
the working amateur photographer
time to spend weekends looking for
calendar shots.

Calendar selections will be made
by members of the Public Relations
Department.

The rules laid down for the com-
petition are simple enough:

1. Only original full-color trans-
parencies will be considered. Do not
submit color negatives, hand-color-
ed prints or any printed or publish-
ed color photographs.

2. Submitted transparencies must
be of Aruba subjects: people, scenes,
places or things.

3. Only work submitted by bona
fide employees or annuitants will

ocupa na e momento aki. Durante
henter su carera na Lago, Sr. Baird
nunca a sostene un accidente cu per-
dida di tempo.

4. Transparencies bought through
the competition become the proper-
ty of Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd.
While every effort will be made to
return to their owners the transpa-
rencies used, this cannot be guar-
anteed.

5. Pictures used in the calendar
which depict recognizable persons
must have signed releases submit-
to the department, stating that the
person or persons have no objection
to having their pictures used in the
calendar.

6. Employees of the Public Rela-
tions Department are not eligible
to enter the competition. The de-
partment, however, reserves the right
to use staff-taken pictures in the
calendar if there are not 12 entries
of sufficiently high caliber submit-
ted.

Transparencies submitted will get
the best of care while being examin-
ed. Before mailing or delivering pic-
tures to the Public Relations Depart-
ment, photographers should be sure
their names and addresses are clear-
ly indicated.

YMCA Opens
Annual Drive
For °59 Funds

Just over one year old and with
accomplishments that belie its age,
the Young Men’s Christian Associa-
tion is appealing to the Aruba com-
munity for funds to continue its
work with the youth of the island.
The appeal is in the form of the Y's
annual fund drive.

Last year, at about the same time,
the Y held its first fund drive. Re-
latively unknown and without ac-
complishments to prove its merit,
the Y, nevertheless, received nearly
Fis. 30,000 from Aruba residents
and businesses. The purpose of the
YMCA soon proved its worthwhile-
ness as its membership leaped from
14 to 549. Both inside and out, the
Y grounds have grown in leaps and
bounds to maintain pace with the
number of eager youths clamoring
for the recreation and instruction
the organization provides.

Inside the building there is a li-
brary, constantly being enlarged, in
addition to facilities for table ten-
nis, checkers, dominoes, pocket bil-
liards, puzzles, table games, televi-
sion and music. Outside, the play-
ing area has been fenced in and
area provided for horseshoes, bas-
ketball, shuffleboard, softball, hand-
ball and gymnastics. The Y has
drawn from many of the island's
leading athletic figures to instruct

there are also no restrictions on
size, it should be remembered that
the bigger the transparency, the bet-
ter the picture made from it.
Anything from 35 mm to 8x10 inches
is acceptable. Pictures will be judg-
ed on the basis of focus, color, com-
position and subject. Size will not
enter significantly into the judges’
appraisals.

The '59 calendar was made up of
employees’ photographs chosen in a
similar contest. In other years, staff-
taken pictures resulted in calendars
of Aruba faces, animal life, scenery
and refinery scenes. All of these,
plus beach shots, festivals, fishing,
driftwood, sand, rocks, towns, streets,
trees, flowers, and very nearly
everything else, are fair game. The
only stipulation is that the subject

must be Aruba-connected in some

Nando, Netherlands Antillian middle-
weight champion, conducted classes
in boxing

The YMCA points to the 8125 to-
tal attendance figure as indication
of the interest Aruba’s youth has
shown in the organization’s pro-
grams. It points to this interest
when requesting funds to support
the Y as an investment in the future
of the young men of Aruba.

Five Get 30-Year Emblems

At Mareh Il

Ceremonies

A cross-section of the refinery was represented at the 30-year ser-

vice award ceremonies held March

11 at the GOB. Men from the Me-

chanical, Process, Industrial Relations, TSD and Accounting Depart-

ments were presented coveted 30-

year service emblems and certifi-

cates at the special management staff meeting.

The five long-service employees
are: Maximo Kelly, corporal B in
Mechanical-Carpenter, Victor A.
Baird, assistant shift foreman in
Process-Utilities, Jan H. Beaujon,
personal relations assistant in In-
dustrial Relations, Reuben C. Peter-
son, assistant shift leader in TSD-
Laboratory and Jose J. P. Oduber,
division head of Tabulating & Sta-
tistics Division in Accounting.

In congratulating the five 30-year
emblem recipients, General Manager
W. A. Murray told them that they
had played a significant part in the
growth of Lago from an infant in
the industry 30 years ago to the
largest oil refinery in the world.

Maximo Kelly began his Lago ser-
vice March 11, 1929 when he started
as a laborer in the yard craft. He
remained there until Feb. 15, 1948
when he transferred to Mechanical-
Carpenter where he is still employ-
ed. Mr. Kelly was promoted to cor-
poral B Jan. 1, 1955. His entire 30
years of service have been attained
without a deductible absence and he
has never had a lost-time industrial
accident.

Victor A. Baird came to Lago Dec.
20, 1928 as a fireman in the Power-
house where he is still employed.
Progressing up the ranks over the
years he was promoted to assistant
shift foreman March 1, 1958, the
position he holds at the present time. |
During his entire 30 years at Lago,
Mr. Baird has never had a lost-time
industrial accident.

Jan H. Beaujon joined Lago Jan.
5, 1929 as a secretary and after
later serving as a Storehouse clerk
transferred to Industrial Relations
Aug. 9, 1931. Four years later, he
transferred to the former Engineer-
ing Department and remained there
until June 2, 1936. He subsequently
transferred to the Industrial Rela-
tions Department where he is still
employed. When presented his ser-
vice certificate, Mr. Beaujon was
commended for his untiring public
service in Aruba. Last year he re-

ceived the order of Orange Nassau
and the Silver Carnation from the
government for his civic leadership.

Reuben C. Peterson started at La-
go Jan. 30, 1929 as a second class
oil inspector in TSD-Laboratory. Still
employed in that department, Mr.
Peterson was promoted to assistant
shift leader Feb. 1, 1946, the position
he holds at the present time. He has
never had a lost-time industrial ac-
cident during his 30 years with the
company.

Jose J. P. Oduber has been a La-
go employee since March 1, 1929.
He started as a shipping clerk in the
Accounting Department where he is
still employed. In March, 1945, he
was promoted to division head B and
served in this capacity until March
31, 1946 when his title became divi-
sion head-Tabulating & Statistics.
Mr. Oduber was also cited at the
award ceremonies for his outstand-
ing contributions to Aruba civic ac-
tivities over the years.

Mother-Daughter Nurses Team Is Unique

Nurse Santjes Sets Example
For Daughter’s Nursing Desires

The saying, "Like father, like son,” has its counterpart in many
languages. However, it’s not often that the phrase, "Like mother, like
daughter,” can be applied. But it certainly is applicable to the mother-
daughter nursing team, that until the other day, existed at Lago Hos-

Office for a _ year. The call to
nursing became stronger so she went
to Holland, with mother’s help, and
enrolled in a midwifery school, R. K.
Vroedvrouwen in Heerlen, This was
in 1952. Three years later she was
graduated from that institution with
honors. Eveline’s nursing education
didn’t end there. With the graces of
her mother she enrolled in a general
nursing course at St. Elisabeth Gast-
huis in Amsterdam and graduated
from that program in 1957. Eveline
and her mother’s great desire was
to work together so Eveline return-
ed to Aruba and gained employment
at Lago Hospital. Before she left for
her advanced schooling in Amster-
dam, Eveline was performing a com-
mendable nursing job in the surgic-
al section of the hospital.

Mother Nita was the sole inspira-
tion for her daughter’s advancement
in nursing circles. She came to Aru-
ba from Surinam in 1934 and was
employed as a nurse at the Eagle
Refinery for a year before commenc-
ing her Lago employment. For the
past 24 years, Nurse Santjes has
performed a highly creditable job as
a Lago nurse. She has worked her
way up through the ranks of junior,
and staff nurses to become head
nurse in the Lago Hospital clinic.
This promotion was effective March
1. During the years, Nurse Santjes
has performed her nursing duties in
all sections of the hospital including
surgical, medical, OB, central supply
and the clinic.

The desire to serve humanity is
not limited to mother and daughter
in the Santjes family. Son Michael is
busy in Holland, making good marks
at Nijmegen. His goal in life is to
become a physician. Just 15, Michael
has many hard years of extensive
study ahead. But with the inspira-
tion he must receive from his mo-
ther Nita and his sister Eveline, Mi-

March 7, the four teams of 14 operators plus their as-

for a continuous 24-hour period. Camps were located at
Dos Playa, Quinta, San Jose (Ecury Estate), Balashi and

receiving equipment was either mobile or powered by port-
able gasoline engine generators and the group prepared
meals in the field.

the club's field day. Though it was the first official field

are especially popular with United States amateurs and
thousands participate annually in cities all over the coun-

Australia and even managed to penetrate the "Iron Cur-

Lago history. It is tucked away be-

The installation began in 1925
when the limestone reservoir was
constructed for the Lago Shipping
Company by Constant De Veer, con-
foreman. Built of locally

gathered and cut stone, the reser-
voir supplied water to seven field
boilers located at the site of the

west end of the present Storehouse
building. The water itself came from
several old wells and was pumped
into the reservoir by a string of
windmills. The fieldboilers supplied
steam for reciprocating pumps which
transferred crude oil to and from
ships and shore tanks. At that time
Lago was merely a transfer point.
The salinity of the well water was
so great that every day one of the
seven boilers had to be shut down
so that boilermakers could re-roll
the leaky tubes.

The reservoir measures nearly 80
feet, two inches, Its capacity is 4302
barrels of water.

In 1930 the company built a low
pressure boiler plant and evapora-
tor plant and the’ reservoir water
was used as_ reserve for the new
boilers which supplied steam to the
refinery and the evaporator plant.

Then in 1945 the laundry’s filter
plant was quickly relocated to its
present reservoir site to filter ship-
hold water for ships going to North
Africa. Plans were altered and the
ships did not take this water so
the filter plant wasn’t used for its
original purpose. Later in the year
shiphold water was filtered at the
plant, stored in the "swimming
pool,’ and mixed with brackish wa-
ter from the Mangel Cora well to
reduce the well’s. salinity content.
This water was used for various re-

An interesting side-light of the
reservoir was the use by an em-
ployee to grow several truck crops

around its perimeter. For several
years, a former Mechanical-Pipe em-
ployee named Meyers grew corn,

maize, papayas, sweet potatoes, avo-
cados and the like which were nur-
tured with water that seeped through
the reservoir’s porous limestone foun-
dation.

The filter plant was operated by
L. R. Croes, process helper B in
Process-Utilities, who started at La-
go Aug. 6, 1933 and retired last
August.

It will be "moth-balled” April 1
as the use of a filter plant is no
longer needed. Lago now purchases
pure water from the government for
boilers and other refinery uses.

Land Ho! ’Tis Aruba on the ho-
rizon undoubtedly found voice in
some leather-lunged mate perched
atop the rigging of a sailing schoon-
er that plied these waters years ago.
Chances are, though, the graceful
three-masted sailing vessel that
breezed by Aruba a couple of weeks
ago had no mate with booming voice
high up on one of the masts, and
no announcement was made of Aru-
ba’s being on the horizon. In fact,
the Belgium barquentine the tropi-
cal trade winds shoved past this
isle has very little in common with
the rigs that carried cargo and boo-
ty a half century and more years
ago. The similarity abruptly ceases
with the form of propulsion and
some design.

To begin with, the sailing vessel
is not as old as might be thought.
While it touches on delightful dreams
of swashbuckling pirates and men of
the sea and full-sailed races across
the oceans with cargoes of tea, wool
and the like, the three-masted bar-
quentine isn’t even as old as the
Lago refinery. Named the Mercator,
it was built for the Royal Belgium
Navy and commissioned in April,
1932. Its 225-foot hull with 35-foot
extreme breadth was fabricated in
the shipyards of Ramage & Gergu-
son, Keith, Scotland.

It is a Belgium Navy cadet train-
ing ship, and is officially listed as
an auxiliary barquentine training
ship. The auxiliary gets in the iden-
tification because unlike the sailing
ships of years ago, the Mercator is
equipped with a single acting six-
cylinder, four stroke oil engine.
When she flashed by the coast of
Aruba, her approximate eight or
nine knots were all wind and sail
generated. She has two decks that
add to her 770 gross tons. When she
passed Aruba she was on her way
to Colon. Registered out of Antwerp,
the Mercator is one of the few re-
maining sailing vessels making
ocean voyages as training ships.

Why is she a barquentine? She is
classed as such because she is
square-rigged on her foremast while
her sails on the main and mizzen
masts are all fore and aft. The Mer-
eator also carried three jib sails.
When she passed Aruba, all her sails
on her foremast were not unfurled.
In their stead was the ship's laundry.
Saturday being wash day in sailing
circles world-wide, the laundry was
flying.
