New Supertanker
Esso Maracaibo
Launched Feb. 24

The first of four supertankers,
the 46,000-ton Esso Maracaibo, or-
dered by Compafiia de Petroleo La-
go for hauling crude oil to Aruba
was launched Feb. 24 in Japan.
Built at the Hitachi Shipbuilding
& Engineering Co. in Innoshina, the
$7,000,000 ve is scheduled to
make the La Salina to Lago run
with a capacity of 295,000 barrels.
Th? other three supertankers order-
ed by Companhia de Petroleo Lago,
2 diary of Creole Petroleum
Corporation, will also be built in
Japan and will be named Esso Ca-
racas, Esso Amuay and Esso Cari-
pito.

Especially designed to pass
through the new channel of the Ma-
racaibo bar and to take advantage
of the full depth, the Esso Maracai-
bo has more than three times the
capacity of the Esso Margarita
hich was one of the biggest Vene-
elan tankers prior to the new
tanker’s launching. The Esso Mar-
garita has a capacity of 85,310 bar-
r-ls and displaces 14,690 tons.

The Esso Maracaibo is under con-
tvact to Creole and its crew of 50
men and officers will be entirely
Venezuelan. In addition to air con-
ditioned crew’s quarters, it has the
latest navigation equipment includ-
ing radar and sonar.

The "madrina” of the ship was
Mrs. Anita Nunuz de Zuloaga, wife
of Dr. Guillermo Zuloaga, associated
with both Creole and Compafiia de

Petroleo Lago.

Seaman’s Club
Observes 25th
Birthday Feb. 8

From its modest beginning in
1934, the International Seamen’s
Club in San Nicolas has grown
into an organization which an-
nually serves more than 30,000
visiting seaman. To commemorate
the club’s 25th anniversary, an in-
formal afternoon celebration was
held Feb. 8 to acquaint island busi-
ness, industrial and religious leaders
with the club’s integral role as a
member of the community.

The event acknowledged the open-
ing of the seamen’s home a quarter
of a century ago as well as its pro-
gress in service to seamen all over
the world who make Aruba their
port of call. The club is dedicated
to the proposition to provide a com-
fortable, clean home away from
home for seamen visiting this Ca-
ribbean isle. Held in high esteem by
sea-going men, its services both to
seamen and the community were
pledged to continue to grow and im-
prove by club officials during the
afternoon celebration.

A small wooden building on Bern-
hardstraat bearing the name Inter-
national Seamen’s Club was opened
in 1934 by Rev. T. Exler. The need
for its services grew and
moved to its present site in 1935. A

Griffin Is Optimistic
On Industry’s Future

Members of the Aruba Lions Club were told by Lago Executive-
Vice President F. E. Griffin that the oil industry expects to be in a
healthy competitive position during years to come by developing bet-
ter production methods and by giving the customer the quality pro-
ducts he demands. The occasion was a dinner program held at the

Dining Hall Feb. 18 for 27 members
of the Lions Club. Mr. Griffin said
to the members of this civie organi-
zation: "We see an optimistic future
for the oil industry, although we are
bound to go through periods of re-
duced demand which will require
corresponding adjustments in our
operations and work force.

"Lago is getting its equipment
and organization in shape to handle
the competition it is meeting and
will continue to meet in the future.
At the same time Lago will be pre-
pared to provide its customers with
the quality and quantity of products
they will demand from us.”

In summing up this statement,
Mr. Griffin continued, "All these ef-

forts reflect our views that what-
ever new developments there may
© in the petroleum field in the
future, Lago expects to be an ag-
gressive partner in the second cen-
tury of the oil industry, just as it
has been for nearly a third of the
industry’s first century.”

Before voicing this opinion, the
executive vice-president told the
group about the oil industry’s cen-
tury of progress. He said that 1959
is a significant year to those asso-
ciated with the industry since it re-
presents the 100th anniversary of
the discovery of crude oil in com-
mercial quantities. He told of this
discovery which took place Aug. 27,
1859, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, by
Col. E. L. Drake. He said this started
a revolutionary movement in the
supply of heat, illumination and
energy in most of the world. Dis-
cussing the first uses of this new
discovery, he told of the "kerosene
age” which started in 1870 when
this fuel replaced animal and vege-
table oils in the world’s lamps. The
refineries of that era, he said, were
crude heating kettles and chemical
and physical testing did not exist.

Oil Transportation

Early transportation methods of
crude oil were revealed to the group
which prior to the dinner had tour-
ed the refinery and harbor. Mr.
Griffin told about the use of wooden
barrels and horse cart transporta~
tion. "The original barrels in which
crude oil was shipped were made of
wood and you can well imagine the
fires that resulted from leaky bar-
rels,”’ he quipped.

Transportation and pipeline growth
in the world were mentioned as well
as the rapid growth of the oil in-
dustry during the past 100 years.
"The growth of the industry was
rapid as the advantages of kerosene
for illumination, lubricants for pre-
venting wear of machinery and
napthas for solvents and paint thin-
ners became known. Bear in mind
that the age of the automobile and
airplane didn't arrive until the last
half of the industry’s first century.

Thousands View Parades

Carnival time is a happy time of year
in Aruba. Thousands of merry makers
line the streets of San Nicolas and
Oranjestad to witness the spectacular
parades. Hundreds of masked partici-
pants dance through the streets, dis-
playing costumes of vast beauty and
intricate detail. Bands of revelers add
to the color of the event by represent-
ing historical or timely subjects in
moods ranging from the very serious to
the highly comical. Dozens of tastefully
designed floats with their beautiful
girls give the parades majesty and
grace.

Without an Accident;

Safe driving can pay off in more ways than one. |
Keeping alert behind the wheel has been especially pro- ke
fitable for two Garage employees, J. S. Croes and R. |
Angela. For the last 20 years, each has received a total |
of Fis. 800 for having 10 accidents whatsoever, not even I

a scratched fender!

Under the terms of the Lago Safe Driving Incentive
Program, the two ace vehicle operators have been|}®
awarded Fis. 10 for each quarter of accident-free driv-
ing. Just recently the two men each completed 80 safe ||}
three-month quarters behind the wheel of their re:
pective vehicles. In addition, nearly 150 other vehicle
operators from other Mechanical Department divisio'
and other Lago departments received the quarterly
awards for safe driving performance. Another outstand-
ing driving record was posted for F. Koolman, also of
the Garage, who has completed 77 quarters without an
accident

Me. Croes, crane operator I, and Mr. Angela, taxi
driver, both began their record safe
driving stints back in 1939. Any
number of violations could have
marred their records such as colli-
sion, license revoked, reckless driv-
ing, speeding or unauthorized rider.
Under the rules of the program, a
driver not a fault in 4 collision is
not disqualified.

Mr. Croes, a Lago employee since
May 31, 1934 started driving in
1934 in the former Labor Depart-
ment. He became a crane operator
B in 1943 and transferred to the
Garage in August, 1946 as a crane
operator A. He was promoted to
crane operator I in January, 1955.

Mr. Angela started his driving
career as a chauffeur in the Marine
Department in July, 1937. He start-
ed at Lago in June, 1929 as an of-
fice boy in that department. His
transfer to the Garage came in No-

New Supertanker
Esso Maracaibo
Launched Feb. 24

The first of four supertankers,
the 46,000-ton Esso Maracaibo, or-
dered by Compafiia de Petroleo La-
go for hauling crude oil to Aruba
was launched Feb. 24 in Japan.
Built at the Hitachi Shipbuilding
& Engineering Co. in Innoshina, the
$7,000,000 ve is scheduled to
make the La Salina to Lago run
with a capacity of 295,000 barrels.
Th? other three supertankers order-
ed by Companhia de Petroleo Lago,
2 diary of Creole Petroleum
Corporation, will also be built in
Japan and will be named Esso Ca-
racas, Esso Amuay and Esso Cari-
pito.

Especially designed to pass
through the new channel of the Ma-
racaibo bar and to take advantage
of the full depth, the Esso Maracai-
bo has more than three times the
capacity of the Esso Margarita
hich was one of the biggest Vene-
elan tankers prior to the new
tanker’s launching. The Esso Mar-
garita has a capacity of 85,310 bar-
r-ls and displaces 14,690 tons.

The Esso Maracaibo is under con-
tvact to Creole and its crew of 50
men and officers will be entirely
Venezuelan. In addition to air con-
ditioned crew’s quarters, it has the
latest navigation equipment includ-
ing radar and sonar.

The "madrina” of the ship was
Mrs. Anita Nunuz de Zuloaga, wife
of Dr. Guillermo Zuloaga, associated
with both Creole and Compafiia de

Petroleo Lago.

Seaman’s Club
Observes 25th
Birthday Feb. 8

From its modest beginning in
1934, the International Seamen’s
Club in San Nicolas has grown
into an organization which an-
nually serves more than 30,000
visiting seaman. To commemorate
the club’s 25th anniversary, an in-
formal afternoon celebration was
held Feb. 8 to acquaint island busi-
ness, industrial and religious leaders
with the club’s integral role as a
member of the community.

The event acknowledged the open-
ing of the seamen’s home a quarter
of a century ago as well as its pro-
gress in service to seamen all over
the world who make Aruba their
port of call. The club is dedicated
to the proposition to provide a com-
fortable, clean home away from
home for seamen visiting this Ca-
ribbean isle. Held in high esteem by
sea-going men, its services both to
seamen and the community were
pledged to continue to grow and im-
prove by club officials during the
afternoon celebration.

A small wooden building on Bern-
hardstraat bearing the name Inter-
national Seamen’s Club was opened
in 1934 by Rev. T. Exler. The need
for its services grew and
moved to its present site in 1935. A

Griffin Is Optimistic
On Industry’s Future

Members of the Aruba Lions Club were told by Lago Executive-
Vice President F. E. Griffin that the oil industry expects to be in a
healthy competitive position during years to come by developing bet-
ter production methods and by giving the customer the quality pro-
ducts he demands. The occasion was a dinner program held at the

Dining Hall Feb. 18 for 27 members
of the Lions Club. Mr. Griffin said
to the members of this civie organi-
zation: "We see an optimistic future
for the oil industry, although we are
bound to go through periods of re-
duced demand which will require
corresponding adjustments in our
operations and work force.

"Lago is getting its equipment
and organization in shape to handle
the competition it is meeting and
will continue to meet in the future.
At the same time Lago will be pre-
pared to provide its customers with
the quality and quantity of products
they will demand from us.”

In summing up this statement,
Mr. Griffin continued, "All these ef-

Before voicing this opinion, the

group about the oil industry’s cen-

is a significant year to those asso-
ciated with the industry since it re-
presents the 100th anniversary of
the discovery of crude oil in com-
mercial quantities. He told of this
discovery which took place Aug. 27,
1859, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, by
Col. E. L. Drake. He said this started
a revolutionary movement in the
supply of heat, illumination and
energy in most of the world. Dis-
cussing the first uses of this new
discovery, he told of the "kerosene
age” which started in 1870 when
this fuel replaced animal and vege-
table oils in the world’s lamps. The
refineries of that era, he said, were
crude heating kettles and chemical
and physical testing did not exist.

Oil Transportation

Early transportation methods of
crude oil were revealed to the group
which prior to the dinner had tour-
ed the refinery and harbor. Mr.
Griffin told about the use of wooden
barrels and horse cart transporta~
tion. "The original barrels in which
crude oil was shipped were made of
wood and you can well imagine the
fires that resulted from leaky bar-
rels,”’ he quipped.

Transportation and pipeline growth
in the world were mentioned as well
as the rapid growth of the oil in-
dustry during the past 100 years.
"The growth of the industry was
rapid as the advantages of kerosene
for illumination, lubricants for pre-
venting wear of machinery and
napthas for solvents and paint thin-
ners became known. Bear in mind
that the age of the automobile and
airplane didn't arrive until the last
half of the industry’s first century.

Thousands View Parades

Carnival time is a happy time of year
in Aruba. Thousands of merry makers
line the streets of San Nicolas and
Oranjestad to witness the spectacular
parades. Hundreds of masked partici-
pants dance through the streets, dis-
playing costumes of vast beauty and
intricate detail. Bands of revelers add
to the color of the event by represent-
ing historical or timely subjects in
moods ranging from the very serious to
the highly comical. Dozens of tastefully
designed floats with their beautiful
girls give the parades majesty and
grace.

Two Drive 20 Years——-

Without an Accident;

10 for each quarter of accident-free driv-
ing. Just recently the two men each completed 80 safe ||}
three-month quarters behind the wheel of their re:
pective vehicles. In addition, nearly 150 other vehicle
operators from other Mechanical Department divisio'
and other Lago departments received the quarterly
awards for safe driving performance. Another outstand-
ing driving record was posted for F. Koolman, also of
the Garage, who has completed 77 quarters without an
accident

Me. Croes, crane operator I, and Mr. Angela, taxi
driver, both began their record safe
driving stints back in 1939. Any
number of violations could have
marred their records such as colli-
sion, license revoked, reckless driv-
ing, speeding or unauthorized rider.
Under the rules of the program, a
driver not a fault in 4 collision is
not disqualified.

Mr. Croes, a Lago employee since
May 31, 1934 started driving in
1934 in the former Labor Depart-
ment. He became a crane operator
B in 1943 and transferred to the
Garage in August, 1946 as a crane
operator A. He was promoted to
crane operator I in January, 1955.

Mr. Angela started his driving
career as a chauffeur in the Marine
Department in July, 1937. He start-
ed at Lago in June, 1929 as an of-
fice boy in that department. His
transfer to the Garage came in No-
vember, 1947 and he was promoted
to driver I in January, 1955. Jan S.
