CHURCH AND Naval visitors saw Lago last month. Flanked by Executive Committee Mem-

bers F. C. Donovan, and F. W. Switzer, above, are officers of the Royal Netherlands Marines.

In the center of the group, with hand on chin, is Major General H. Lieftinck. Leaders of the

Church in Holland and the Netherlands Antilles visited President O. Min-

gus’ home after driving through the refinery. Bishop B. J. Alfrink of Utrecht is greeted by

Mr. Mingus, center, and is flanked by Rey. C. J. de Valk of Oranjestad and Bishop M. J. Hol-
terman of Willemstad, right, as they entered the Lago Refinery.

Announced Nov. 1 following a
meeting of the Lago Thrift Plan
Board, the additional contribution by
the company is over and above nor-
mal regular company contributions
or Thrift Foundation earnings. The
5061 participants who will receive
the additional contribution represent
100 per cent employee participation
in the plan

The special Christmas withdrawal
option, set up two years ago, will
again be available to those employees
who choose to exercise the right.
Under the special withdrawal terms,
employees may withdraw any
amount of the additional contribu-
tion up to two-thirds the total. This
withdrawal will not affect the em-
’ eligibility for future with-
als.

Supplementing the additional con-
tribution is a lump sum of Fils. 25
given to all employees who have been

enrolled in the Thrift Plan for the
enti r between Oct. 1, 1957 and
Sept. 30, 1958. A pro rata amount of
Pls. 25 will be given those employees

who participated in the Plan for on-
ly a part of this period.

As was the case last year, cards
will be given to all Thrift Plan par-
ticipants upon which they will be re-
quested to signify their intentions to
withdraw money from the additional
contribution or leave the sum_ in
their accounts. The dates for the en-
tire transaction are exactly the same
as last year. The cards will be dis-

ra contribution amounts to approximately three

tributed Nov. 12. The time card em-
ployees will find theirs racked with
their time cards. The monthly em-
ployees will be given their withdraw-
al cards by their supervisors. The
cards, filled in and signed, must be
returned to the Thrift Plan Account-
ing Office by Nov. 19. Those who do
not elect to withdraw money from
the additional contribution are re-
quested to note this on the card and
return it. For those who wish to
withdraw money, the maximum
amount of the additional contribu-
tion that can be withdrawn will be
shown on the cards in guilders and
cents.

Withdrawal payments will be
made Dec. 2 to regular employees
and Dec. 3 to staff employees at the
normal payoff times and places.

Here is an example of the way the
additional contribution works:

An employee who earns Fls. 400 a
month and has contributed 10 per
cent to the Thrift Plan — the maxi-
mum allowed — for the past year
has deposited Fls. 480 in his ac-
count. With the company contribu-
tion of 65 cents for each guilder he
has deposited plus the lump sum of
Pls. 25, the additional contribution
totals Fls. 337.

Participants in the Overseas Thrift
Plan were also advised of an addi-
tional contribution. A distribution

New Esso Road
Map of Aruba
Now Available

Revised Esso Road maps of Aruba
have just been received on the island
and may be obtained at the six Esso
service stations in San Nicolas and
Oranjestad, at the government Tour-
ist Bureau or through Lago’s Mar-
keting Division.

The map, which has been brought
up to date, now shows the route of
the recently-completed stretch of the
major highway from the location in
Oranjestad marked Haventerrein to
the Malmok area. It also spots the
location of the new Aruba Cultural
Center, Basi Ruti Club, Aruba Carib-
bean Hotel and the proposed Aruba
Beach Club Hotel.

Another feature of the map, which
should be of interest to residents and
tourists alike, spots the many caves
and Indian rock markings on the is-
land. Sections of Oranjestad and San
Nicolas which have been built up
since the issuance of the last map are
also identified on the new one. The
cover, on which a scene of Mount
Hooiberg figured prominently in the
background, has been changed to an
illustration of a typical Aruban home
framed with stately palm trees and
fleecy-white clouds.

Lago Honored

Leading Religious, Naval
Dignitaries Visit Refinery

Dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church and the Royal Nether-
lands Marines visited the Netherlands Antilles recently and in the
course of their official calls honored Lago with their presence. In a
period of two days, Oct. 22 and Oct. 24, Lago welcomed church officials
headed by Bishop M. J. Holterman, bishop of Willemstad; then greeted

Major General H. Lieftinck and ac-
companying officers of the Nether-
lands Marines.

Bishop Holterman, bishops and
priests of the Roman Catholic
Church visited Lago in conjunction
with ceremonies elevating the
Netherlands Antilles from a vicariate
to the state of bishopric. With the
newly invested Bishop of Willem-
stad during his Lago tour were
Bishop B, J. Alfrink, bishop of Ut-
recht, Holland; Bishop Field, bishop
of Grenada; Bishop S. Kuypers,
bishop of Suriname; Rev. C. Mick-
linhoff, secretary to Bishop Holter-
man and editor of Amigoe; Dom A.
van Duin, abbot of St- Benedict Ab-
bey, Trinidad, and other island par-
ish priests. Theirs was a_ brief
tour through Lago and an_ official
Executive Committee reception at
the home of President O. Mingus.

General Lieftinck was accompanied
by Lt. Col. L. J. Pronk of Curacao,
commanding officer of Netherlands
Antilles Marines; Major G. P. Gies-
berts, commanding officer of the Ma-
rine detachment in Aruba, and Capt.
H. L. C. Wentholt, aide-de-camp. The
group was met at the Lago Recep-
tion Center by members of the Exe-
cutive Committee, taken on a tour
of the refinery and entertained at a
luncheon. The visit of General Lief-
tinck to the Netherlands Antilles was
his first. He also visited Bonaire dur-
ing his Oct. 18 to Nov. 3 stay. While
here he conducted an official inspec-
tion of the Savaneta camp.

The prominent figures in Bishop
Holterman’s company travelled to
this area to be present at the cere-
monies attendant with the elevation
of the Netherlands Antilles to the
state of a bishopric and the invest-
iture of the new Bishop of Willem-
stad Oct. 18. Actually, Bishop Hol-
terman and concerned church offi-
cials of this area and Holland knew
of the forthcoming elevation since
June 28 of this year when it was an-
nounced by the late Pope Pius XII.
Bishop Holterman, the first Bishop
of Willemstad, came to the Antilles
in 1957 as titular bishop of Vagada
and Apostolic Vicar succeeding
Bishop L. J. T. van der Veen Zeppen-
feldt. As such he was the eighth and
last Dominican Apostolic Vicar of
the Netherlands Antilles. The first
was Bishop M. J. Niewindt, conse-
crated Apostolic Vicar in August,
1843. Both he and his successor
Bishop J. F. A. Kistemaker, were
secular clergy who preceded the
eight Dominican Apostolic Vicars.

The elevation of the area to
bishopric culminates the growth of
Roman Catholic hierarchy that be-
gan with the propogation of that
faith around 1520, shortly after the
island's discovery. At that time, Ro-
man Catholic history suggests that
the islands were considered part of
the Coro, Venezuela, diocese. After
a period of anti-Catholicism, during

The Porto-Clinic unit tests for vi-
sual acuity, color perception, depth
perception, field of vision and reac-
tion time. These are all factors for
which there is compensation. The
visual acuity test might reveal the
need for corrective eye glasses; the
driver would then be required to wear
glasses while operating a motor ve-
hicle. The subject may also be made
aware of color-blindness or poor
depth perception, with a warning to

Both incumbent members of the
Lago Sport Park Board were re-
elected to two-year terms in the Oct.

bers were selected by constituents
to fill out the 10-man board.

Returned to office were Adriaan
W. Brokke, attest clerk A in the Ac-
counting Department, who received
a total of 1044 votes, and Jose M. La
Cruz, assistant supervisor in the

total of 786 votes.

New members of the Sport Park

sistant operator, Process-C&LE, 574

which the faith nearly became ex-
tinct in the Antilles, a mission was
established and the religion grew un-
der the teachings of Jesuits and
Austin Friars. Later Franciscans
took over the mission, but when their
order was suppressed, the mission
in Curacao was abandoned. Religious
teachings then were conducted by
the secular clergy, or priests who
were exiled Spanish men of the robe
and functioned as priests on their
own and without legal appointment.

In May, 1824 Rev. Niewindt ac-
cepted the post of Apostolic Prefect,
later became the Netherlands An-

standard field of vision, here he
would be advised that he was limited
in perceiving objects coming at him
from the right or left; and slow re-
action time, which accounts for many
rear-end collisions.

Both night vision and glare re-
covery are tested with the seperate
Porto-Glare unit. Administration of
this test induces the subject to re-
cognize his limitations. The examiner
doesn’t have to tell him that he is
affected by the sudden glare of head-
lights, or that it takes him a long,
time to see well under low levels of
illumination. In a darkened room, the}
subject first must identify letters on
a screen which are varied from dim
to bright, then recover from the!
glare from two sealed-beam head-
lights and again identify letters on
the screen, The time it takes him to]

recover from the glare indicates any | }

defects he might have in this area.

The equipment has been used dur- |
ing the past two weeks to test Lago
High School students enrolled in the
drivers’ training program. Some 30}

students have been tested as part of
the requirements for the course. The
equipment will be turned over soon|

It takes a variety of automotive skills and mechanical know-
how on the part of Mechanical-Garage employees to keep
Lago’s 450-odd vehicles on the road. Whether they are work-
ing on a tiny five horsepower scooter engine or a giant 320
horsepower V-16 diesel, the same close attention to detail is
required and the same tolerances must be kept by Garage
mechanics. Lago’s rolling stock includes everything from a
fleet of 212 scooters to a powerful 45-ton capacity mobile
crane. Successful and profitable refining operations depend, to
a great extent, on this wide variety of well maintained
vehicles.

With Lago’s source of supply for replacement parts lo-
cated thousands of miles away, maintenance of Garage equip-
ment is a never-ending program. The Garage is required to
perform major and minor repairs to its rolling stock and sta-
tionary engines that would not normally be required in a
stateside refinery. Except for automobiles and light trucks,
a vast inventory of spare parts — more than 10,000 different
items — must be stocked in the Storehouse so they are readily
available. Local dealers now supply the company with parts
for cars and light trucks which were formerly Storehouse
items. Yet, a total of nearly Fls. 800,000 in spart parts is on
inventory.

A regularly scheduled maintenance program is kept on each
piece of mobile and stationary equipment. Rolling stock must
be greased, washed and inspected monthly. Engines are pe-
riodically tuned for peak performance or overhauled if neces-

his ability with the language, he re-
plied that English was a common
school subject in Shanghai and all
students were expected to master it.

The chief mate of the Transmars
went on to say that it has been near-
ly three years since he has_ been
home. He left shortly after his child
was born. "I have a furlough in just
nine months,” he said smilingly, and

A gracious host, Mr. Hao went on
to explain that his abacus was
actually purchased in New York City
though it was made im Hong Kong.
Approximately five by eight inches
square, it had the traditional ten
rows of "beads,’’ seven beads to
each row. Mr. Hao said that this par-
ticular abacus was slightly smaller
than he was accustomed to using
which cut down his speed somewhat

The modern Chinese abacus or
suan-pan was used as early as the
12th century and followed an earlier
type, known in the sixth century
which incorporated bamboo rods
tnat served as counters. The suan-
pan places a value of five on the two
beads in each upper row. The lower
beads each have a value of one.

The chief difference between the
suan-pan and the Roman abacus lies
in the fact that the former has one
more bead in each section. An early
Roman counter type abacus was a
table with lines to represent units,
tenths, hundreds and so on and was
known in the Mediterranean coun-

Lago’s rolling stock presents many
contrasts. Compare a two-wheeled
scooter, weighing just 350 pounds
with the new F1 Marion mobile crane,
which tips the scales at 62 tons!
Both require the same skills to keep
them on the job and working pro-
perly.

In addition to 212 scooters, the
Garage maintains 17 cranes, 24 se-
dans and 76 light and heavy-duty
trucks. Also included in the 450 ve-
hicles are Dempster-Dumpsters,
heavy tractors, fork trucks and Ross
carriers, fire trucks, trash _ trucks,
ambulances, an armored payroll
truck, utility trucks, police vans,
graders, moving vans,

Three Move Up
In Softball Loop

The first two games in the pe
departmental softball tournament
ended with lop-sided scores but the
third in the series was a_ closely-
fought contest. Accounting met}
Machinist in the initial match Oct.|
8 and walked off with the honors by
defeating the Machinist team 11-3.

Following a game cancelled due to
a wet playing field and the next
scheduled game cancelled because of
the Sport Park Board elections,
GOB met the Carpenter softballers
Oct. 22 in another one-sided ball
game. The Carpenter team managed
to score one run in the first inning
as a result of two GOB errors but

couldn’t get another man _ across
home plate during the rest of the
game. GOB belted out 15 runs to

move up to the Winner C slot in the
tournament. Two of the four runs
scored in the fourth inning came
from R. Amaya’s home run.

Acid met IR Oct. 27 in a closely-
matched contest. Acid’s 12 hits were
good enough to score eight runs
against IR’s hard-playing team which
pulled in seven runs for nine hits. A.
got three hits
for four times at bat to score two
runs. IR player J. Willems got two
two and scored one run. Acid
was charged with two errors in the
contest and IR with three. Thirteen
teams are entered in the Monday and
Wednesday evening tourney.

Aruba Wins Grand Trophy
In Spearfishing Contest

Aruba spearfishing teams swept the international spearfishing con-
test at Bonaire to bring home first and second place official team
medals and the first place unofficial team honors. Following tactics
laid down by Nick Ecury, TSD, member of the organizing committee,
both official Aruba teams won the top daily prizes for their underwater

skin diving skill and copped the
grand trophy as the best team com-
peting in the two-day contest.

Originally scheduled for Oct. 24,
25 and 26, spear fishing for official
points was limited to the latter two
days so that visiting teams could use
the first day to familiarize them-
selves with the fishing grounds.

At the end of the first day’s fish-
ing the Aruba team captained by
Mike Hagedoorn was in the lead
having shot 416 pounds of fish for
a total score of 1258 points. Just 15
points behind was the other official
Aruba team captained by N. Solog-
nier with 1243 points for 403 pounds
of fish. Though the Curacao team
had shot 464 pounds of fish the first
day, they were awarded only 1089
points since they had shot low-point
value fish such as shark and large
grouper over 15 kilos. Cuba was in
fourth place at the end of the first
day’s shooting (this team had con-
centrated on shark worth only one
point a pound) and the United States
team ranked fifth.

All attention was focused on the
Aruban teams the second and final
day of the contest since one lucky
shot, or a miss, could spell the dif-
ference between a first or second
place for these two. Diving as deep
as 60 feet after big Nassau grouper
worth four points a pound or stalk-
ing man-sized barracuda worth six

points a pound, team members of the
| Aruba clubs kept increasing their
| overall lead. Spectators in nearby

boats could only view results of suc-
cessful stalking and shooting. Skin
diving is one sport not designed for
spectators unless they happen to
have masks and flippers.

When results for both days were

that the Aruba team captained by
Mr. Solognier had passed the No. 2
Aruba team during the day to win
overall first place honors. The fine
teamwork of Mr. Solognier, Pedro
Bislick, TSD; Rosando Colina, Ma-
chine Shop; and Eddy Bislick, boat-
man, produced a total of 83 fish
weighing 621 pounds worth 1643
points. The Aruba team captained by
Mr. Hagedoorn and consisting of H.
Henriquez, M. Bislip and N. Hernan-
dez, shot 505 pounds of fish worth
1565 points for second place honors.
The unofficial Aruba team, made
up of high school-age boys from Se-
roe Colorado Tres Dunlap, Ed
Gruenberg and Lonnie Ammann —
took first place medals for the best
unofficial team. Boatman for the
team was Lionel Agumbero. The boys
had no boat the first day so they pro-
ceeded to spearfish without one which
put them under a great handicap. For
their sportmanship-like behavior,
this team was commended highly by
officials and other team members.

and even though there have been exclamations
of delight and protestations of color favor
rumbling up from downstairs superintendents
on upstairs work, it’s still going to be white.
Or, in pursuit of factual data, an off-white or
near grey.

The blue?

Well, it goes something like this. Along
comes an order of gallons and gallons of prime
coat, and, to everyone’s surprise the cans are
labeled light blue. But, ha! ha!, the paint com-

pany must have made a mistake in identifying
all,

the cans; after no one ordered blue. Be-

appy the first coat in a lovely shade of blue.
It takes 200 gallons of primer to cover the
300-plus-foot high stack, and on anybody’s
brush that’s a lot of pastel.

So, up went the blue, much to the delight
of many viewers who suddenly were smitten
with the bouncing thought that their company
had gone gay, man, gay. A blue stack, what
more could you ask for? The sidewalk super-
intendents were in complete agreement, judged
the hue to be exactly according to dreamy
specifications, and gave John McHugh and
Custodis catwalkers a full vote of approval
"Let's face it,” mused one muse, "can you
think of a better way to
make the Jersey annual
report ?”

But then sidewalk spe-
cifications tumbled and
pastel hues went the

In the center of the group, with hand on chin, is Major General H. Lieftinck. Leaders of the

Church in Holland and the Netherlands Antilles visited President O. Min-

Announced Nov. 1 following a
meeting of the Lago Thrift Plan
Board, the additional contribution by
the company is over and above nor-
mal regular company contributions
or Thrift Foundation earnings. The
5061 participants who will receive
the additional contribution represent
100 per cent employee participation
in the plan

The special Christmas withdrawal
option, set up two years ago, will
again be available to those employees
who choose to exercise the right.
Under the special withdrawal terms,
employees may withdraw any
amount of the additional contribu-
tion up to two-thirds the total. This
withdrawal will not affect the em-
’ eligibility for future with-
als.

Supplementing the additional con-
tribution is a lump sum of Fils. 25
given to all employees who have been

enrolled in the Thrift Plan for the
enti r between Oct. 1, 1957 and
Sept. 30, 1958. A pro rata amount of
Pls. 25 will be given those employees

who participated in the Plan for on-
ly a part of this period.

As was the case last year, cards
will be given to all Thrift Plan par-
ticipants upon which they will be re-
quested to signify their intentions to
withdraw money from the additional
contribution or leave the sum_ in
their accounts. The dates for the en-
tire transaction are exactly the same
as last year. The cards will be dis-

ra contribution amounts to approximately three

tributed Nov. 12. The time card em-
ployees will find theirs racked with
their time cards. The monthly em-
ployees will be given their withdraw-
al cards by their supervisors. The
cards, filled in and signed, must be
returned to the Thrift Plan Account-
ing Office by Nov. 19. Those who do
not elect to withdraw money from
the additional contribution are re-
quested to note this on the card and
return it. For those who wish to
withdraw money, the maximum
amount of the additional contribu-
tion that can be withdrawn will be
shown on the cards in guilders and
cents.

Withdrawal payments will be
made Dec. 2 to regular employees
and Dec. 3 to staff employees at the
normal payoff times and places.

Here is an example of the way the
additional contribution works:

An employee who earns Fls. 400 a
month and has contributed 10 per
cent to the Thrift Plan — the maxi-
mum allowed — for the past year
has deposited Fls. 480 in his ac-

New Esso Road
Map of Aruba
Now Available

Revised Esso Road maps of Aruba
have just been received on the island
and may be obtained at the six Esso
service stations in San Nicolas and
Oranjestad, at the government Tour-
ist Bureau or through Lago’s Mar-
keting Division.

The map, which has been brought
up to date, now shows the route of
the recently-completed stretch of the
major highway from the location in
Oranjestad marked Haventerrein to
the Malmok area. It also spots the
location of the new Aruba Cultural
Center, Basi Ruti Club, Aruba Carib-
bean Hotel and the proposed Aruba
Beach Club Hotel.

Another feature of the map, which
should be of interest to residents and
tourists alike, spots the many caves
and Indian rock markings on the is-
land. Sections of Oranjestad and San
Nicolas which have been built up
since the issuance of the last map are
also identified on the new one. The
cover, on which a scene of Mount
Hooiberg figured prominently in the
background, has been changed to an
illustration of a typical Aruban home
framed with stately palm trees and
fleecy-white clouds.

Lago Honored

Leading Religious, Naval
Dignitaries Visit Refinery

Dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church and the Royal Nether-
lands Marines visited the Netherlands Antilles recently and in the
course of their official calls honored Lago with their presence. In a
period of two days, Oct. 22 and Oct. 24, Lago welcomed church officials
headed by Bishop M. J. Holterman, bishop of Willemstad; then greeted

Major General H. Lieftinck and ac-
companying officers of the Nether-
lands Marines.

Bishop Holterman, bishops and
priests of the Roman Catholic
Church visited Lago in conjunction
with ceremonies elevating the
Netherlands Antilles from a vicariate
to the state of bishopric. With the
newly invested Bishop of Willem-
stad during his Lago tour were
Bishop B, J. Alfrink, bishop of Ut-
recht, Holland; Bishop Field, bishop
of Grenada; Bishop S. Kuypers,
bishop of Suriname; Rev. C. Mick-
linhoff, secretary to Bishop Holter-
man and editor of Amigoe; Dom A.
van Duin, abbot of St- Benedict Ab-
bey, Trinidad, and other island par-
ish priests. Theirs was a_ brief
tour through Lago and an_ official
Executive Committee reception at
the home of President O. Mingus.

General Lieftinck was accompanied
by Lt. Col. L. J. Pronk of Curacao,
commanding officer of Netherlands
Antilles Marines; Major G. P. Gies-
berts, commanding officer of the Ma-
rine detachment in Aruba, and Capt.
H. L. C. Wentholt, aide-de-camp. The
group was met at the Lago Recep-
tion Center by members of the Exe-
cutive Committee, taken on a tour
of the refinery and entertained at a
luncheon. The visit of General Lief-
tinck to the Netherlands Antilles was
his first. He also visited Bonaire dur-
ing his Oct. 18 to Nov. 3 stay. While
here he conducted an official inspec-
tion of the Savaneta camp.

The prominent figures in Bishop
Holterman’s company travelled to
this area to be present at the cere-
monies attendant with the elevation
of the Netherlands Antilles to the
state of a bishopric and the invest-
iture of the new Bishop of Willem-
stad Oct. 18. Actually, Bishop Hol-
terman and concerned church offi-
cials of this area and Holland knew
of the forthcoming elevation since
June 28 of this year when it was an-
nounced by the late Pope Pius XII.
Bishop Holterman, the first Bishop
of Willemstad, came to the Antilles
in 1957 as titular bishop of Vagada
and Apostolic Vicar succeeding
Bishop L. J. T. van der Veen Zeppen-
feldt. As such he was the eighth and
last Dominican Apostolic Vicar of
the Netherlands Antilles. The first
was Bishop M. J. Niewindt, conse-
crated Apostolic Vicar in August,
1843. Both he and his successor
Bishop J. F. A. Kistemaker, were
secular clergy who preceded the
eight Dominican Apostolic Vicars.

The elevation of the area to
bishopric culminates the growth of
Roman Catholic hierarchy that be-
gan with the propogation of that
faith around 1520, shortly after the
island's discovery. At that time, Ro-
man Catholic history suggests that
the islands were considered part of
the Coro, Venezuela, diocese. After
a period of anti-Catholicism, during

The Porto-Clinic unit tests for vi-
sual acuity, color perception, depth
perception, field of vision and reac-

which there is compensation. The
visual acuity test might reveal the
need for corrective eye glasses; the
driver would then be required to wear
glasses while operating a motor ve-
hicle. The subject may also be made
aware of color-blindness or poor
depth perception, with a warning to

Both incumbent members of the
Lago Sport Park Board were re-
elected to two-year terms in the Oct.

bers were selected by constituents
to fill out the 10-man board.

Returned to office were Adriaan
W. Brokke, attest clerk A in the Ac-
counting Department, who received
a total of 1044 votes, and Jose M. La
Cruz, assistant supervisor in the
Lago Commissary, who received a
total of 786 votes.

New members of the Sport Park

clerk, Accounting, 830 votes; Hya-
cintho Geerman, clerk, Accounting,
580 votes; and Teddie Johnson, as-
sistant operator, Process-C&LE, 574

tied with 503 votes.

In addition to these five men, the
Lago Sport Park Board is made up
of R. Q. Kemp, J. Briezen, M. Reyes,

took over the mission, but when their

teachings then were conducted by
the secular clergy, or priests who

rear-end collisions.

Both night vision and glare re-
covery are tested with the seperate
Porto-Glare unit. Administration of
this test induces the subject to re-
cognize his limitations. The examiner
doesn’t have to tell him that he is
affected by the sudden glare of head-
lights, or that it takes him a long,
time to see well under low levels of
illumination. In a darkened room, the}
subject first must identify letters on
a screen which are varied from dim
to bright, then recover from the!
glare from two sealed-beam head-

the screen, The time it takes him to]

recover from the glare indicates any | }

defects he might have in this area.

The equipment has been used dur- |

Engines are pe-
riodically tuned for peak performance or overhauled if neces-

in flawless English. Queried about
his ability with the language, he re-
plied that English was a common
school subject in Shanghai and all
students were expected to master it.

The chief mate of the Transmars
went on to say that it has been near-
ly three years since he has_ been
home. He left shortly after his child
was born. "I have a furlough in just
nine months,” he said smilingly, and

are a few coastal steamship
panies operating in Formosa which
should offer employment.”

A gracious host, Mr. Hao went on
to explain that his abacus was
actually purchased in New York City
though it was made im Hong Kong.
Approximately five by eight inches
square, it had the traditional ten
rows of "beads,’’ seven beads to
each row. Mr. Hao said that this par-
ticular abacus was slightly smaller
than he was accustomed to using
which cut down his speed somewhat

The modern Chinese abacus or
suan-pan was used as early as the
12th century and followed an earlier
type, known in the sixth century
which incorporated bamboo rods
tnat served as counters. The suan-
pan places a value of five on the two
beads in each upper row. The lower
beads each have a value of one.

The chief difference between the
suan-pan and the Roman abacus lies
in the fact that the former has one
more bead in each section. An early
Roman counter type abacus was a
table with lines to represent units,
tenths, hundreds and so on and was
known in the Mediterranean coun-
tries as early as 450 B.C. Another
type abacus was an early device for

Aruba Wins Grand Trophy
In Spearfishing Contest

Aruba spearfishing teams swept the international spearfishing con-
test at Bonaire to bring home first and second place official team
medals and the first place unofficial team honors. Following tactics
laid down by Nick Ecury, TSD, member of the organizing committee,
both official Aruba teams won the top daily prizes for their underwater

skin diving skill and copped the
grand trophy as the best team com-
peting in the two-day contest.

Originally scheduled for Oct. 24,
25 and 26, spear fishing for official
points was limited to the latter two
days so that visiting teams could use
the first day to familiarize them-
selves with the fishing grounds.

At the end of the first day’s fish-
ing the Aruba team captained by
Mike Hagedoorn was in the lead
having shot 416 pounds of fish for
a total score of 1258 points. Just 15
points behind was the other official
Aruba team captained by N. Solog-
nier with 1243 points for 403 pounds
of fish. Though the Curacao team
had shot 464 pounds of fish the first
day, they were awarded only 1089
points since they had shot low-point
value fish such as shark and large
grouper over 15 kilos. Cuba was in
fourth place at the end of the first
day’s shooting (this team had con-
centrated on shark worth only one
point a pound) and the United States
team ranked fifth.

All attention was focused on the
Aruban teams the second and final
day of the contest since one lucky
shot, or a miss, could spell the dif-
ference between a first or second
place for these two. Diving as deep
as 60 feet after big Nassau grouper
worth four points a pound or stalk-
ing man-sized barracuda worth six

points a pound, team members of the
| Aruba clubs kept increasing their
| overall lead. Spectators in nearby

boats could only view results of suc-
cessful stalking and shooting. Skin
diving is one sport not designed for
spectators unless they happen to
have masks and flippers.

When results for both days were

that the Aruba team captained by
Mr. Solognier had passed the No. 2
Aruba team during the day to win
overall first place honors. The fine
teamwork of Mr. Solognier, Pedro
Bislick, TSD; Rosando Colina, Ma-
chine Shop; and Eddy Bislick, boat-
man, produced a total of 83 fish
weighing 621 pounds worth 1643
points. The Aruba team captained by
Mr. Hagedoorn and consisting of H.
Henriquez, M. Bislip and N. Hernan-
dez, shot 505 pounds of fish worth
1565 points for second place honors.
The unofficial Aruba team, made
up of high school-age boys from Se-
roe Colorado Tres Dunlap, Ed
Gruenberg and Lonnie Ammann —
took first place medals for the best
unofficial team. Boatman for the
team was Lionel Agumbero. The boys
had no boat the first day so they pro-
ceeded to spearfish without one which
put them under a great handicap. For
their sportmanship-like behavior,
this team was commended highly by
officials and other team members.

Or, in pursuit of factual data, an off-white or

The blue?

Well, it goes something like this. Along
comes an order of gallons and gallons of prime
coat, and, to everyone’s surprise the cans are
labeled light blue. But, ha! ha!, the paint com-

all,

the cans; after no one ordered blue. Be-

appy the first coat in a lovely shade of blue.
It takes 200 gallons of primer to cover the
300-plus-foot high stack, and on anybody’s
brush that’s a lot of pastel.

So, up went the blue, much to the delight
of many viewers who suddenly were smitten
with the bouncing thought that their company
had gone gay, man, gay. A blue stack, what
more could you ask for? The sidewalk super-
intendents were in complete agreement, judged
the hue to be exactly according to dreamy
specifications, and gave John McHugh and
