Third Polio Shot
Now Being Given
At Hospital

The third shot of Salk vaccine,
the final of three inoculations
needed for full protection against
poliomyelitis, is presently being
given at the Lago Hospital. Free
of charge, the shot is available
for all children who received the
first two shots at the Lago Sport
Park October and November last
year.

The third and final shot of the
Salk vaccine is being given week
days Monday through Friday un-
til Aug. 15 from 1:15 to 3 in the
afternoon. The inoculation is be-
ing given at the Lago Hospital
family clinic, not the Sport Park
where the first two were ad-
ministered.

The first two shots give only a
small amount of protection, but
after the third shot has been

taken the protection against polio
is almost 100 per cent.

Cost Control
Items Can
Mean Money

On the surface, the six words in
the headline of this story would
seem like unnecessary verbiage.
It’s obvious that cost control does
mean money and the saving there-
of. In this particular instance,
however, it is a cost control item
that can mean money under the
Coin Your Ideas plan. A cost con-
trol idea adopted or put into prac-
tice will receive a CYI award if it
has been submitted as a sug-
gestion. The only requirement is
that the cost control item and the
CYI be the product of the same
man. The fact that an idea is con-
sidered a cost control plan in no
way jeopardizes its consideration
for a CYI award. The best way is
to submit the idea together: as a
cost control item and as a sug-
gestion. Employees also have the
prerogative to turn in their cost
control items that have been in
practice no more than six months
as a Coin Your Idea suggestion.
Again, the only requirement is
that the idea be the product of
the same man.

nolastie reports have been for-
warded to W. H. Meskill, secretary
of the Board of Administration, from

schools in the United States, all of
whom have finished the current
semester. Final reports have yet to
be received on students in Holland
since those schools do not end the
school year until August. Of the
United States students, the eight

preparatory scholars are particularly
noteworthy. This group obtained e
ceptional ranking in both academic
and athletic ventures; their ability
to become assimilated into the Ame-
rican way of life so quickly and so

easily was praiseworthy and duly
acknowledged by the headmasters
and principals of the schools they

attended

The eight are Alexander H. Hoo,
Angel Britten, Kok Tai Wong, Al-
phonso Steenen, Ascisclo Martinus,
Rosindo Geerman, Marcelino Kock
é ando de Cuba. All are for-
mer Lago employees and five are
Lago Vocational School graduates.

To say one attained more honors

than another would be incorrect. All
received accolades of high degree,
and left their academic and athletic
marks at their respective schools.

Mr. Hoo, who attended St. Leo Pre-
paratory School, St. Leo, Florida,
distinguished himself as an excellent
student, well liked by his class asso-
ciates and teachers, and of whom one
prefect said: "Alex, you certainly
are a fine representative of Aruba.”

both attended Marionapolis Prepar:

themselves as outstanding scholars.
Mr. Britten, LVS 1952 class, earned
a 96 average in trigonometry, the
highest in the school. He completed
his school year with a 90.3 overall
average. Mr. Wong completed his
Marionapolis studies with a 91.3
which earned him the highest rank-
ing in a class of 38 pupils. In addition
to his average, Mr. Britten never re-
ceived less than a 95 in effort and
conduct. The only difficulty either
man had was becoming used to the
New England weather, if that was
at all possible throughout what was
one of the East Coast’s worst winters
in half a century. Headmaster Rev.
John C. Petrauskas, MIC, had this to
say: Both Britten and Wong had
some difficulty in adjusting to our
climate. At this time I feel that both
young men have adapted themselves

to their new environment. We are
delighted with the scholastic pro-
gress of both your candidates.” Mr.

Britten will enter Catholic University
in Washington this fall as a mecha-
nical engineering student. Mr. Wong,
an Aruba Technical School graduate
and former Mechanical Department-
electrical employee, plans to study
electrical engineering at Villanova
(Pennsylvania) University.

All American
Pupils at Watkinson School, Hart-
ford, Connecticut, were Alphonso
Steenen and Ascisclo Martinus. Both
members of the LVS 1952 class, they
distinguished themselves athletically
as well as academically. Mr. Steenen,

ASU

From the evening of June 20 through the sunny, bright
day of June 29, the many facets of island sports were ex-
hibited in a series of sparkling events. Its manifestations
extended through the majority of sports clubs and touched
heavily on the two large stadiums, Wilhelmina and the Lago
Sport Park, under the sponsorship of the Aruba Sports
Union’s fourth annual sports festival. It opened June 20 at
Wilhelmina Stadium with impressive, colorful ceremonies
that included marching groups of athletes from many of the
islands social and sports clubs; it included music and the
marching of the Sabaneta Marines; it included exhibitions
of little league baseball, fencing and judo. At the opening,
ASU President O. S. Henriquez presented Raymundo Kemp
of Lago’s police department a cup symbolic of his feats as
an athlete and in recognition of the honor of athlete of the
year. Contests in many sports were conducted from one end
of the island to the other moving June 25 to the Lago Sport
Park. There some 5000 spectators crushed the Park’s
facilities to watch track and field and cycling. An exciting
evening ended with Enrique Vorst, a dashman, receiving the
ASU and Lago Sport Park awards for the outstanding
athlete of the evening. Mr. Vorst won both the 100- and 220-

yard dashes to earn the title and trophies.

ASSISTED BY a ranking scout, Raymundo Kemp, acknowledged at this
meeting of the ASU as one of Aruba’s outstanding athletes, raises the
standard heralding the start of the fourth annual sports festival sponsored
by the Aruba Sports Union.

and women, banners of their respective clubs held high, marched in

what almost seemed an endless stream past the stands in tribute to
athletics and the ASU annual festival of sports.

PJ3AB Calling

Ham Contacts Ex-A

Former Tankerman
Recalls Early Lago

Three months ago PJ3AB went
on the air. Its operator, Victor L.
Steele of the electric craft, had
little thought at the time that his
new-found hobby would lead him
to touch a part of Aruba oil trans-
shipping as done in the late Twen-
ties. But it did, here’s how.

Comfortably settled at the send-
ing key to his set in his Lagoville
home June 7, he contacted Station
WI1BIL in Rhode Island. Further in-
vestigation revealed that Mr. Steele
was, through the dit-dahs sent and
received, in contact with Gene and
Gene years ago was a frequent visitor
to Aruba.

Through the Twenties the Gene
contacted by Mr. Steele was a radio-
man on a tanker that frequented
"San Nicolas Bay” and Oranjestad
where oil from Lake Maracaibo was
transshipped to his tanker. He re-

membered taking on oil from the S/S}

George Henry tied up in Oranjestad.
That was in 1928. In 1929, Mr. Gene
from Rhode Island related, his tank-
er came into San Nicolas Bay, as he
referred to what is now alternately
called Lago Harbor and San Nicolas
Harbor. There his ship took products
from lake tankers that hauled oil
from the lake. He remembers the area
around San Nicolas Bay in 1929 as
having three tanks near the shore
fronted by two docks. At the time
there was no refinery. Little did he
know, or anyone for that matter,
that here was to grow the world’s
largest. Gene was amazed when Mr.
Steele keyed in Morse code a picture
of the present Lago. Gene conceded
that "I suppose I would never recog-
nize San Nicolas Bay now.”

Questions

Further questions from the Rhode
Island ham asked: "Does the oil still

come by lake tankers or is there a
pipe line from Maracaibo? Is_ the
fleet a large one to handle the

capacity? Do the thousands of li-
zards still flit about the coral?”
Questions only the passing of time
bring forth.

The operator of W1BIL also re-
called wooden homes just south of
the docks with all their people,
chickens and pigs. Swimming in those
days, he said, was done south of the
docks opposite the opening in the
reef for ships. (Mr. Gene’s ventures
in San Nicolas Bay predates the
opening of the so-called West En-
trance cut through the reef in 1937.
Where he evidently went swimming
with his shipmates and early Lago
employees was near the East En-
trance.) Also related were his trips
to Curacao, and a fond desire to re-
turn to this area some time to see
for himself how it looks today, some
30 years after his frequent visits.

For Mr. Steele it was a bond that
extended across many miles of open

PROFITING FROM his father’s wireless ventures is Clement Steele. Re-

to enlarging his own collection.

made with radio colleagues the world

works on the 20 meter band in Morse,

made contacts with hams operating

| Hi
Czechoslovakia,

pany release.

Cause of the April 23 blaze that
enveloped 12 of the 21 terminal stor-
age tanks was the ignition of gaso-
line vapors which accumulated in an
electric control switch room approxi-
mately 210 feet from the tank being
loaded at the time. Tied up at the
terminal discharging products was

| the S/S Esso Newark. She had aboard

18,000 barrels of Esso Extra, 18,000
barrels of Esso and 12,000 barrels of
diesel fuel to be delivered to the ter-
minal. At the time the initial explo-
sion occurred, the tanker was pump-
ing Esso and diesel fuel into storage.
It has been reported officially that
vapors originating from an overflow
of gasoline from the receiving tank
were carried by the prevailing winds
to the ignition source. It has been
established that the overflow of the
tank was a result of lack of inform-
ation as to the actual pumping rate
of the vessel and an error in gauging
the level in the shore tank during the
pumping.

No Rupture

No tanks ruptured and no spillage
occurred within the dike walls of the
four-year-old installation enabling
plant personnel and assisting fire-
fighting units from the adjacent
Naval and Coast Guard station to
confine the fire to the tanks. Imme-
diately after the initial explosion,

there was a flash fire in the plant | ;

yard and the Esso and nearby naptha
tanks were completely enveloped in
flames. The fire spread from tank to

tank across their tops by frequently |

changing winds and_ eventually
touched off 12 tanks. The S/S Esso
Newark stopped pumping within two
minutes after the initial explosion,
and was away from its berth in 15
minutes.

The fire burned for approximately

40 hours. Had it not been for conti-
nued high, shifting winds, the fire

could have been contained in a small
area and extinguished much earlier.

ONE OF the most photographed units in this refinery or any other is
undoubtedly the cat cracker. It is ”shot” during the day from many
angles, at night, at Christmas-time bedecked with brightly colored bulbs,

shot. It’s taken from the flare stack.
UN DI e plantanan mas fotografia den e refineria aki of cualkier otro sin

Third Polio Shot
Now Being Given
At Hospital

The third shot of Salk vaccine,
the final of three inoculations
needed for full protection against
poliomyelitis, is presently being
given at the Lago Hospital. Free
of charge, the shot is available
for all children who received the
first two shots at the Lago Sport
Park October and November last
year.

The third and final shot of the
Salk vaccine is being given week
days Monday through Friday un-
til Aug. 15 from 1:15 to 3 in the
afternoon. The inoculation is be-
ing given at the Lago Hospital
family clinic, not the Sport Park
where the first two were ad-
ministered.

The first two shots give only a
small amount of protection, but
after the third shot has been

taken the protection against polio
is almost 100 per cent.

Cost Control
Items Can
Mean Money

On the surface, the six words in
the headline of this story would
seem like unnecessary verbiage.
It’s obvious that cost control does
mean money and the saving there-
of. In this particular instance,
however, it is a cost control item
that can mean money under the
Coin Your Ideas plan. A cost con-
trol idea adopted or put into prac-
tice will receive a CYI award if it
has been submitted as a sug-
gestion. The only requirement is
that the cost control item and the
CYI be the product of the same
man. The fact that an idea is con-
sidered a cost control plan in no
way jeopardizes its consideration
for a CYI award. The best way is
to submit the idea together: as a
cost control item and as a sug-
gestion. Employees also have the
prerogative to turn in their cost
control items that have been in
practice no more than six months
as a Coin Your Idea suggestion.
Again, the only requirement is
that the idea be the product of
the same man.

ed, then a limited number of new ap-
plicants will receive grants. The

number of new grants for the coming
school year will depend on the pro-
gram’s total costs.

nolastie reports have been for-
warded to W. H. Meskill, secretary
of the Board of Administration, from

schools in the United States, all of
whom have finished the current
semester. Final reports have yet to
be received on students in Holland
since those schools do not end the
school year until August. Of the
United States students, the eight

preparatory scholars are particularly
noteworthy. This group obtained e
ceptional ranking in both academic
and athletic ventures; their ability
to become assimilated into the Ame-
rican way of life so quickly and so

easily was praiseworthy and duly
acknowledged by the headmasters
and principals of the schools they

attended

The eight are Alexander H. Hoo,
Angel Britten, Kok Tai Wong, Al-
phonso Steenen, Ascisclo Martinus,
Rosindo Geerman, Marcelino Kock
é ando de Cuba. All are for-
mer Lago employees and five are
Lago Vocational School graduates.

To say one attained more honors

than another would be incorrect. All
received accolades of high degree,
and left their academic and athletic
marks at their respective schools.

Mr. Hoo, who attended St. Leo Pre-
paratory School, St. Leo, Florida,
distinguished himself as an excellent
student, well liked by his class asso-
ciates and teachers, and of whom one
prefect said: "Alex, you certainly
are a fine representative of Aruba.”

both attended Marionapolis Prepar:

themselves as outstanding scholars.
Mr. Britten, LVS 1952 class, earned
a 96 average in trigonometry, the
highest in the school. He completed
his school year with a 90.3 overall
average. Mr. Wong completed his
Marionapolis studies with a 91.3
which earned him the highest rank-
ing in a class of 38 pupils. In addition
to his average, Mr. Britten never re-
ceived less than a 95 in effort and
conduct. The only difficulty either
man had was becoming used to the
New England weather, if that was
at all possible throughout what was
one of the East Coast’s worst winters
in half a century. Headmaster Rev.
John C. Petrauskas, MIC, had this to
say: Both Britten and Wong had
some difficulty in adjusting to our
climate. At this time I feel that both
young men have adapted themselves

to their new environment. We are
delighted with the scholastic pro-
gress of both your candidates.” Mr.

Britten will enter Catholic University
in Washington this fall as a mecha-
nical engineering student. Mr. Wong,
an Aruba Technical School graduate
and former Mechanical Department-
electrical employee, plans to study
electrical engineering at Villanova
(Pennsylvania) University.

All American
Pupils at Watkinson School, Hart-
ford, Connecticut, were Alphonso
Steenen and Ascisclo Martinus. Both
members of the LVS 1952 class, they
distinguished themselves athletically
as well as academically. Mr. Steenen,

ASU

From the evening of June 20 through the sunny, bright
day of June 29, the many facets of island sports were ex-
hibited in a series of sparkling events. Its manifestations
extended through the majority of sports clubs and touched
heavily on the two large stadiums, Wilhelmina and the Lago
Sport Park, under the sponsorship of the Aruba Sports
Union’s fourth annual sports festival. It opened June 20 at
Wilhelmina Stadium with impressive, colorful ceremonies
that included marching groups of athletes from many of the
islands social and sports clubs; it included music and the
marching of the Sabaneta Marines; it included exhibitions
of little league baseball, fencing and judo. At the opening,
ASU President O. S. Henriquez presented Raymundo Kemp
of Lago’s police department a cup symbolic of his feats as
an athlete and in recognition of the honor of athlete of the
year. Contests in many sports were conducted from one end
of the island to the other moving June 25 to the Lago Sport
Park. There some 5000 spectators crushed the Park’s
facilities to watch track and field and cycling. An exciting
evening ended with Enrique Vorst, a dashman, receiving the
ASU and Lago Sport Park awards for the outstanding
athlete of the evening. Mr. Vorst won both the 100- and 220-

yard dashes to earn the title and trophies.

ASSISTED BY a ranking scout, Raymundo Kemp, acknowledged at this
meeting of the ASU as one of Aruba’s outstanding athletes, raises the
standard heralding the start of the fourth annual sports festival sponsored
by the Aruba Sports Union.

and women, banners of their respective clubs held high, marched in

what almost seemed an endless stream past the stands in tribute to
athletics and the ASU annual festival of sports.

PJ3AB Calling

Ham Contacts Ex-A

Former Tankerman
Recalls Early Lago

Three months ago PJ3AB went
on the air. Its operator, Victor L.
Steele of the electric craft, had
little thought at the time that his
new-found hobby would lead him
to touch a part of Aruba oil trans-
shipping as done in the late Twen-
ties. But it did, here’s how.

Comfortably settled at the send-
ing key to his set in his Lagoville
home June 7, he contacted Station
WI1BIL in Rhode Island. Further in-
vestigation revealed that Mr. Steele
was, through the dit-dahs sent and
received, in contact with Gene and
Gene years ago was a frequent visitor
to Aruba.

Through the Twenties the Gene
contacted by Mr. Steele was a radio-
man on a tanker that frequented
"San Nicolas Bay” and Oranjestad
where oil from Lake Maracaibo was
transshipped to his tanker. He re-

membered taking on oil from the S/S}

George Henry tied up in Oranjestad.
That was in 1928. In 1929, Mr. Gene
from Rhode Island related, his tank-
er came into San Nicolas Bay, as he
referred to what is now alternately
called Lago Harbor and San Nicolas
Harbor. There his ship took products
from lake tankers that hauled oil
from the lake. He remembers the area
around San Nicolas Bay in 1929 as
having three tanks near the shore
fronted by two docks. At the time
there was no refinery. Little did he
know, or anyone for that matter,
that here was to grow the world’s
largest. Gene was amazed when Mr.
Steele keyed in Morse code a picture
of the present Lago. Gene conceded
that "I suppose I would never recog-
nize San Nicolas Bay now.”

Questions

Further questions from the Rhode
Island ham asked: "Does the oil still

come by lake tankers or is there a
pipe line from Maracaibo? Is_ the
fleet a large one to handle the

capacity? Do the thousands of li-
zards still flit about the coral?”
Questions only the passing of time
bring forth.

The operator of W1BIL also re-
called wooden homes just south of
the docks with all their people,
chickens and pigs. Swimming in those
days, he said, was done south of the
docks opposite the opening in the
reef for ships. (Mr. Gene’s ventures
in San Nicolas Bay predates the
opening of the so-called West En-
trance cut through the reef in 1937.
Where he evidently went swimming
with his shipmates and early Lago
employees was near the East En-
trance.) Also related were his trips
to Curacao, and a fond desire to re-
turn to this area some time to see
for himself how it looks today, some
30 years after his frequent visits.

For Mr. Steele it was a bond that
extended across many miles of open

PROFITING FROM his father’s wireless ventures is Clement Steele. Re-

made with radio colleagues the world

built his own 75-watt output set,

works on the 20 meter band in Morse,
since he figures "it will take some

made contacts with hams operating
out of Greenland, Canada, England,

average communication treats each

| Hi
Czechoslovakia,

pany release.

Cause of the April 23 blaze that
enveloped 12 of the 21 terminal stor-
age tanks was the ignition of gaso-
line vapors which accumulated in an
electric control switch room approxi-
mately 210 feet from the tank being
loaded at the time. Tied up at the
terminal discharging products was

| the S/S Esso Newark. She had aboard

18,000 barrels of Esso Extra, 18,000
barrels of Esso and 12,000 barrels of
diesel fuel to be delivered to the ter-
minal. At the time the initial explo-
sion occurred, the tanker was pump-
ing Esso and diesel fuel into storage.
It has been reported officially that
vapors originating from an overflow
of gasoline from the receiving tank
were carried by the prevailing winds
to the ignition source. It has been
established that the overflow of the
tank was a result of lack of inform-
ation as to the actual pumping rate
of the vessel and an error in gauging
the level in the shore tank during the
pumping.

No Rupture

No tanks ruptured and no spillage
occurred within the dike walls of the
four-year-old installation enabling
plant personnel and assisting fire-
fighting units from the adjacent
Naval and Coast Guard station to
confine the fire to the tanks. Imme-
diately after the initial explosion,

there was a flash fire in the plant | ;

yard and the Esso and nearby naptha
tanks were completely enveloped in
flames. The fire spread from tank to

tank across their tops by frequently |

changing winds and_ eventually
touched off 12 tanks. The S/S Esso
Newark stopped pumping within two
minutes after the initial explosion,
and was away from its berth in 15
minutes.

The fire burned for approximately

40 hours. Had it not been for conti-
nued high, shifting winds, the fire

could have been contained in a small
area and extinguished much earlier.

ONE OF the most photographed units in this refinery or any other is
undoubtedly the cat cracker. It is ”shot” during the day from many
angles, at night, at Christmas-time bedecked with brightly colored bulbs,
and eyen when it is undergoing a general inspection. Here is a different
shot. It’s taken from the flare stack.
UN DI e plantanan mas fotografia den e refineria aki of cualkier otro sin
