College Student
Summer Training
Begins June 30

Beginning June 30, the summer of
many college students in Aruba will
be put to profitable use in Lago’s
training program for these young
men and women. It will be the fourth
summer in a row that Lago has of-
fered this program of on-the-job
training in the student's particular
field of study.

The summer training program is
open to all students providing they
fulfill three conditions:

(a) They must be the children of
parents residing in Aruba. Parents
| do not have to be Lago employees
| for children to be eligible, the pro-
gram is open to all.

(b) They must be currently
rolled in a college or university, and
have successfully completed at least
one year of college education.

(c) They must pass a_ physical
examination.

The program is designed
students learn to work,
perience for future careers and
| orient themselves to the business
world. A grant-in-aid of Fils. 175 is
given each student participating in
each of the two four-week periods.

Application blanks may be ob-
tained from the Training Division in
the Administration Building. Appli-
cations should be returned and ap-

Children 6 Months
To 13 Years To Get
Third Polio Shot

July 1 is the date the Lago Medical

Department will begin giving the
third shot of Salk vaccine against

poliomyelitis to all children who re-
ceived shots at the Lago Sport Park
October and November last year.
The children to receive the third shot
are those youngsters who were be-
tween the ages of six months and 13
years at the time the first two shots
were given.

The third shot inoculations of salk
vaccine will be given week days
Monday through Friday from July 1
to Aug. 15. They will be given from

| 1:15 to 3 in the afternoon at the La-

go Hospital family clinic, not the
Sport Park where the first two shots
were administered. The hospital
clinics will be used because facilities
for inoculations are better than those
arranged at the Sport Park. Also,
there is no urgent, short time limit

| on the third shot.
en-|

The Salk shots are free.

To be protected against polio-
mylitis, a person must receive all
three shots of the Salk vaccine. The
first two shots are given at three-
week intervals and the third is given
between seven and nine months after
the second shot. The first two shots
give only a small amount of pro-
tection, but after the third shot has
been taken the protection against

poliomyelitis is almost 100 per cent. |

The third shot, therefore, is absolute-
ly necessary for full protection.

The Aruba Department of Health
will begin giving its third shot of

the Salk vaccine at about the same|

Three men were promoted in major
moves in the Technical Service De-
partment June 15. Named technical

superintendent was Charles’ R.
Greene; Charles J. Schwarz was
made chief chemical engineer and

William J. Butler became assistant
chief chemical engineer.

H. Chippendale, former technical
superintendent, will be on special as-
signment and will continue his pre-
sent acting assignment of general
superintendent.

Mr. Greene has over 27!/2 years’
service in the Technical Service De-
partment. His Lago career began
June 5, 1930 as an engineer. In Janu-
ary, 1933 he was promoted to chief
test engineer, later became group
head in process testing and design.
He was promoted to chief chemical
engineer in August, 1945.

With over 22'/2 years’ service,
Mr. Schwarz became chief chemical
engineer after having served as as-
sistant chief chemical engineer for
over two years, moving into that

position in April, 1956. His career in
Aruba began in October, 1935 as a
technical student in the Process De-
partment. He then became a chemical
engineer, and through successive pro-
motions in 1945 was made group head
B-cracking and group head A-
statistics and design. Prior to his as-
sistant chief chemical engineer posi-
tion he served as group head A in
the Technical Service Department's
process design.

Mr. Butler is the junior of the three
with 13 years of service dating back
to April, 1945 when he began as a
Technical Service Department stu-
dent chemical engineer II. He later
became student engineer I then che-
mical engineer. In October, 1951 he
was promoted to group head B, in-
termediate operations. Later moves
made him group head B, primary
operations and in June, 1955 assistant

supervising engineer. Prior to his
June 15 advancement he held the
position of supervising engineer

gained by an August, 1955 promotion.

Commissary ID Card Photos

To Be Taken

Close to 1500 privileged users of
the Lago Commissary have had their
pictures taken for new identification
cards under a program to bring up
to date employee and dependent iden-
tification. But these are but a few of
the originally estimated 5000 wives
and children of Lago employees who,
before the program is completed, will
be photographed. The photographing
venture began May 18.

To insure proper identification of
all shoppers entitled to use the com-
missary, care should be taken to have
wives and children photographed
thereby insuring the receipt of new
identification cards when they are
issued. When the Lago Police De-
partment photographers set about
photographing eligible shoppers at
the commissary, it was done on a
daily basis. Future plans, however,
are to set up the photographic equip-
ment at the commissary site imme-
diately before and after pay days
and only when there are exceptional-
ly large numbers in the store. The
photographers will not be stationed
at the commissary permanently.

Once an eligible shopper has been
photographed, the old commissary
identification card is clipped. This
voids any possible duplication of
pictures or cards. Current card-hold-
ers requesting to be photographed
have their names checked against a
master IBM list of all employee de-
pendents as well as having their card
carefully examined. This procedure
precludes inssuance of new cards to
unauthorized persons and _ reserves
the commissary shopping privilege
for eligible Lago users.

No date has been set for the gene-
ral distribution of the new identity
cards. New applicants will receive
new cards, but shoppers with old
identity cards will continue to use
this means of identification until all
eligible commissary users are photo-
graphed and the general distribution
of the new cards announced.

Two types of cards are being pre-
pared. The first is a pink card that
will be issued to all permanent users
of the commissary. The card will in-
clude the holder’s photograph with
the LPD seal imprinted over part of
the picture, further emphasizing the
non-transferable shopping privilege.
The second type card is yellow and
is designed for special category use.

on Pay Days
name and a date after which the
card is no longer valid. In all other
respects the pink and yellow cards
are similar.

The cards will be grommeted in a
protective plastic case, and will be
fabricated as tamper proof as pos-
sible to protect those entitled to
commissary shopping rights. Pre-
sently out of the old type commissary
identification cards, a temporary
stenciled card good for 14 days is
being issued under the old regula-
tions to approved family members
other than employees’ wives and
qualifying children.

lieutenant governor, has been retain-
ed to represent the Lago Oil &
Transport Co., Ltd. in the Nether-

its operations make him particularly
well-qualified for this assignment.

SPAC Final
Insurance Drive |
Enrolls 1059

The earnest, hard-working aims of |
the members of the Special Problems |
Advisory Committee and their as-|
sistants reached fruition with the]
close of last week that brought forth
the announcement: 1059 Lago em-
ployees enrolled in the group life in- |
surance program during the six drive
days

Promotion of family benefits of
group life insurance was aimed at
the bulk of Lago employees who fail-
ed to avail themselves of the January
and February, 1956 opportunity for
group insurance when the program
was introduced. During the June 3,
4 and 5 sign-up days - the first of the
two-phase effort to enroll the more
than half of the employee body with- |
out insurance - 800 signed up. The
second period of June 11, 12 and 13
that completed the SPAC-sponsored

program brought in 259 additional
signers for a total of 1059 enrolled |

during the June days.

The original insurance program
begun early in 1956 enrolled 2434 em-
ployees or 46.3 per cent of the em-|
ployee body. The total now insured is
3493 upping the percentage of em-
ployees covered to 67.6. With the
over one thousand additional insure-
es, the average age of the covered
Lago employee is 36 years.

Employees may still take out the
low cost group life insurance. Now,

however, they will have to take a
physical examination. Applications
may be obtained from either the

Special Problems Advisory Commit-
tee or the Industrial Relations De-
partment.

John McHugh, born in Ireland, and boss of
the three-men team from the Custodis Corpo-
ration working here, takes that view when he
asks rhetorically "What's there to be afraid
a dramatic demonstration for
faint-hcarts who worry about the scaffolding
by taking two planks, about an inch-and-a-half
2 putting them side by side on the ground,

he says.

2 throe men working here got into the bu-
1 curious ways, and only one had any
previous connection with high work. Mr. Mc-
Hugh, for example, took a job working a stack
in Dublin simply because a man offered it to
him, and it paid well. George Hough was a for-
mer s2aman (who called at Aruba a number of
times) who just drifted into the business. Pad-
dy Keen is following his father, who was a

solf never wanted to be anything else.

Their job here is a many-sided one.

tain stacks for industrial plants all over the
Yollowing an inch-by-inch inspection,

carried out with the aid of camera (with which
some of the pictures on this page were made),
the crew then does the necessary repairs. Thus,
in addition to everything else, the men must be
carpenters, masons, iron-workers and painters.

Once the No. 3 stack is painted they will
move to the No. 1 stack of Powerhouse No. 1,
then to Powerhouse No. 2.

Recruits to the trade are generally brought
up to the top by stages. He might work for a
week at only six feet above the ground, and
then, as he gains confidence, goes higher. Con-
fidence but never over-confidence is the key to
success in this business.

Whether a man loses that confidence after
a slip, or after some-one else’s accident, de-
pends entirely on himself. Mr. McHugh recalls
one case in which a scaffolding on a stack
wasn’t taut on one side. A man stepped on the
plank, and the whole thing dropped down
about nine inches before it caught and tighten-
ed itself like it should have. But the man had
frozen in fear, and it took two or three others
to get him down to the ground. He never went

U.S. Supermarkets
Host to Lago

Commissary Men

If the Lago commissaries should suddenly burst
forth with new shopping aids, merchandizing at-
tractions and product handling, it will not be by
accident. Rather, the improvement in operations
will be the result of training eight commissary
supervisors in the United States supermarkets of
Food Fair, H. C. Bohack, Penn Fruit and Daitzh
Shopwell.

Of the eight, five have been northward and have
returned with reports of amazing stores that sell
just about everything, glitter and gleam with
modern accessories and have automatic con-
trivances at every turn. The observational train-
ing started with H. L. Dammers and D. G. Ri-
chards. Their travels about the metropolitan area
of New York and Philadelphia took them through
the stores and warehouses of Food Fair in Linden,
New Jersey, H. C. Bohack in Brooklyn and Penn
Fruit in Philadelphia. They were joined in their
experiences by J. M. La Cruz, M. Pope and J. Thy-
zen, who made like observational trips. Still to go
are R. H. Vint, J. W. Sherman and F. C. Ciccarelli,
all of the General Services Department.

The first two to leave under the training pro-
gram were Mr. Dammers and Mr. Richards with
the latter getting something of a jump on the pro-
gram by being in the United States on vacation
and actually purchasing in the super markets
similar to those he later observed. Mr. Richards’

presence in the United States served Mr. Dammers
nicely, however. He had someone to meet him at
Idlewild Airport when he disembarked from the
plane that carried him from Curacao to New York.
From the airport the two went to the Hotel Ab-
bey, their headquarters during the training assign-
ment. And from the hotel the next morning they
went to the office of the Standard Oil Co. (N.J.)
where modes of metropolitan travel were explain-
ed. This included conveyances the likes of busses,
subwa trains, ferries and taxis. All proved to be
monster vehicles of confusion. Well they might.
They confuse the average U. S. visitor to New
York, let alone Lago’s Dammers and Richards in
the United States on their first visit. In fact,
it was the first time either of the men had left the
Caribbean.

But once they made their contacts with person-
nel of Bohack and Food Fair they were in good
hands. At Bohack it was Robert Reilly, assistant
advertising manager, and at Food Fair it was Wil-
liam Gehrke, training coordinator, who led Mr.
Dammers and Mr. Richards on the observational
tour that opened all doors and answered all
questions pertaining to merchandizing operations
and policies of the two mammoth chain stores.
Everywhere they went they were treated with ex-
ceptional courtesy; their questions answered com-

Lago career has been in the pipe
craft where he first began April 5,

1928. He started as a pipefitter and
received his present position of fore-
man through a promotion last year.
Mr. Gonzalez, according to Mr.
Proterra, is one of the best wire
cable splicers in Lago’s employ. His
entire 30 years has been spent in the
Mechanical Department with the rig-
gers. He first came to work for Lago
April 1, 1928. Mr. Gonzalez later was
promoted to corporal C, the position
he now holds.
| The third Mechanical Department
employee to receive a 30-year award
was Mr. Felipe, who started with
Lago June 11, 1928. As with the two
other Mechanical Department em-
ployees, Mr. Felipe’s service has been
in one place. He started as a mechan-
ic in the garage and has remained
there working to the position of fore-
man which he now holds. Mr. Felipe
told the group that he had early as-
pirations of becoming an _ aero-

it is a "bit too late.” He did, though,
take an active part in the now de-
funct Caribbean Flying Association
as a pilot and mechanic.

The fourth 30-year employee to be
honored was Mr. Quant, who com-
pleted his length of service exactly
30 years to the day he started, all
| without a deductible absence or lust-
time injury. He began his employ
June 14, 1928 in Receiving and Ship.
ping and has remained there. He is
a dockman. M. E. Fisk of the Process
Department reminisced that it was
Mr. Quant who caught the famous
Aruba white rattlesnakes for Ralph
Watson, former Receiving and Ship-

jin turn, passed them along to United

An idea put into motion 10 years ago culminated in
the opening of an outstanding youth club last week.
Bishop Holterman officially opened the new Don Bosco
clubhouse in San Nicolas and saw before him a wide
variety of facilities expressly for the members of the

club he originated as parish priest of St. Theresa's
| Church a decade before. The bishop blessed the new

| building located east of the Lago Sport Park in the Don

Bosco School area. He lauded the work such clubs do
for his parishioners, calling these organizations "'indis-
pensable institutions.”

Among the guest speakers was Temporary Lt. Gov.
K. H. de Boer, who said: "Youth clubs like Don Bosco
should thrive with all the determination that can be
mustered so that future generations can accomplish
good. If they fail they have only themselves to blame.”

Master of ceremonies at the opening was Chris
Schwengle, who, in addition to Bishop Holterman and
Dr. De Boer,, introduced Rev. N. C. Erkamp, present
parish priest at St. Theresa’s Church and Frere Edgar,
who has been a driving force behind much of Don Bosco
organization and supervision work.

Visitors at the opening made a tour of the new and
brightly lighted building inspecting the many pieces of
equipment that will be made available to the more than
500 members of the Don Bosco Club, Facilities for
avocation development in the club’s youth extend from
chess to weightlifting. In addition to looking, some

visitors tried their hand at various games.

Un idea cu a worde avanza 10 anja pas4 a culmina

nobo di Don Bosco na San Nicolas y a mira su dilanti un

rokia di Santa Teresita diez anja pasd4. E obispo a ben-

Park den vecindario di Don Bosco School. El a gaba e
trabao cu tal clubnan ta haci pa su parokianonan, ya-
mando e organizacionnan aki "institucionnan indispen-

Entre e oradernan invitado tabatin Gezaghebber Tem-
porario K. H. de Boer, kende a bisa: "Clubnan juvenil
manera Don Bosco mester florece cu tur determinacion
cu por worde lamta asina cu futuro generacionnan por
haci bon. Si nan fracasa, anto e falta ta di nan mes.”

Maestro di ceremonianan nae habrimento tabata

mente pastoor di parokia di Santa Teresita y Frére Ed-

cion di Don Bosco y trabao di supervision.

pletely, machines put through de-

monstrations for their observation,

and on many occasions the two men

were allowed to test run equipment.

Their visits included both modern

supermarkets and rambling ware-

houses. At Food Fair, a tremendous

enterprise with over 300 stores, Mr.

Gehrke took them through the Lin-

den warehouses stacked deep as far

as the eye could see with meat, fruit

and boxed products. Of particular in-

terest to both was the chilled meat

room that housed, only briefly, hun-

dreds of sides of beef hung on a net-

work of overhead railing two and

one-half miles long. This particular
meat locker employs ultra violet rays
in a tenderizing process. The meat
remains here no more than 48 hours;

it moves that rapidly out of the
warehouse to supply 90 Food Fair
stores serviced by this particular)
locker. Also pointed out to the two
Lago men was the lack of humidity
in areas where meat is stored. They |
were told that humidity causes loss
of flavor.

Product Promotion

Students of merchandizing, Mr.
Dammers and Mr. Richards were
shown the ways and means of in-
ducing sales and creating product
traffic. Mr. Gehrke, in particular, ex-
plained and set out examples how
Food Fair shelves its food items by
color, package or bottle size and pro-
duct. Cleanliness, orderlines and
availability of product keynote super
market-customer relations. Such
philosophies of everyday selling
quickly became part of the copious
notes taken by the two men for use
in transplanting ideas to Lago’s
commissaries.

While Lago’s envoys to the United

States learned about supermarket
operation, people they contacted
learned about Aruba. A _ standing

question in all stores was: Where is
Aruba?” The interrogators were told
and all now know not only where the
island is, but also that the sun shines

hard to believe.

Out of all the travels came a true
appreciation for Mr. Dammers and

well organized stores. |

The commissaries profited by the
training trip the day Mr. Dammers
returned to work. One of his first ob-
servations was that he had the
answer to the problem of keeping
customer’s purchases separated. It’s
a simple device placed between cus-

College Student
Summer Training
Begins June 30

Beginning June 30, the summer of
many college students in Aruba will
be put to profitable use in Lago’s
training program for these young
men and women. It will be the fourth
summer in a row that Lago has of-
fered this program of on-the-job
training in the student's particular
field of study.

The summer training program is
open to all students providing they
fulfill three conditions:

(a) They must be the children of
parents residing in Aruba. Parents
| do not have to be Lago employees
| for children to be eligible, the pro-
gram is open to all.

(b) They must be currently
rolled in a college or university, and
have successfully completed at least
one year of college education.

(c) They must pass a_ physical
examination.

The program is designed
students learn to work,
perience for future careers and
| orient themselves to the business
world. A grant-in-aid of Fils. 175 is
given each student participating in
each of the two four-week periods.

Application blanks may be ob-
tained from the Training Division in
the Administration Building. Appli-
cations should be returned and ap-

Children 6 Months
To 13 Years To Get
Third Polio Shot

July 1 is the date the Lago Medical

Department will begin giving the
third shot of Salk vaccine against

poliomyelitis to all children who re-
ceived shots at the Lago Sport Park
October and November last year.
The children to receive the third shot
are those youngsters who were be-
tween the ages of six months and 13
years at the time the first two shots
were given.

The third shot inoculations of salk
vaccine will be given week days
Monday through Friday from July 1
to Aug. 15. They will be given from

| 1:15 to 3 in the afternoon at the La-

go Hospital family clinic, not the
Sport Park where the first two shots
were administered. The hospital
clinics will be used because facilities
for inoculations are better than those
arranged at the Sport Park. Also,
there is no urgent, short time limit

| on the third shot.
en-|

The Salk shots are free.

To be protected against polio-
mylitis, a person must receive all
three shots of the Salk vaccine. The
first two shots are given at three-
week intervals and the third is given
between seven and nine months after
the second shot. The first two shots
give only a small amount of pro-
tection, but after the third shot has
been taken the protection against

poliomyelitis is almost 100 per cent. |

The third shot, therefore, is absolute-
ly necessary for full protection.

The Aruba Department of Health
will begin giving its third shot of

the Salk vaccine at about the same|

Three men were promoted in major
moves in the Technical Service De-
partment June 15. Named technical

superintendent was Charles’ R.
Greene; Charles J. Schwarz was
made chief chemical engineer and

William J. Butler became assistant
chief chemical engineer.

H. Chippendale, former technical
superintendent, will be on special as-
signment and will continue his pre-
sent acting assignment of general
superintendent.

Mr. Greene has over 27!/2 years’
service in the Technical Service De-
partment. His Lago career began
June 5, 1930 as an engineer. In Janu-
ary, 1933 he was promoted to chief
test engineer, later became group
head in process testing and design.
He was promoted to chief chemical
engineer in August, 1945.

With over 22'/2 years’ service,
Mr. Schwarz became chief chemical
engineer after having served as as-
sistant chief chemical engineer for
over two years, moving into that

position in April, 1956. His career in
Aruba began in October, 1935 as a
technical student in the Process De-
partment. He then became a chemical
engineer, and through successive pro-
motions in 1945 was made group head
B-cracking and group head A-
statistics and design. Prior to his as-
sistant chief chemical engineer posi-
tion he served as group head A in
the Technical Service Department's
process design.

Mr. Butler is the junior of the three
with 13 years of service dating back
to April, 1945 when he began as a
Technical Service Department stu-
dent chemical engineer II. He later
became student engineer I then che-
mical engineer. In October, 1951 he
was promoted to group head B, in-
termediate operations. Later moves
made him group head B, primary
operations and in June, 1955 assistant

supervising engineer. Prior to his
June 15 advancement he held the
position of supervising engineer

gained by an August, 1955 promotion.

Commissary ID Card Photos

To Be Taken

Close to 1500 privileged users of
the Lago Commissary have had their
pictures taken for new identification
cards under a program to bring up
to date employee and dependent iden-
tification. But these are but a few of
the originally estimated 5000 wives
and children of Lago employees who,
before the program is completed, will
be photographed. The photographing
venture began May 18.

To insure proper identification of
all shoppers entitled to use the com-
missary, care should be taken to have
wives and children photographed
thereby insuring the receipt of new
identification cards when they are
issued. When the Lago Police De-
partment photographers set about
photographing eligible shoppers at
the commissary, it was done on a
daily basis. Future plans, however,
are to set up the photographic equip-
ment at the commissary site imme-
diately before and after pay days
and only when there are exceptional-
ly large numbers in the store. The
photographers will not be stationed
at the commissary permanently.

Once an eligible shopper has been
photographed, the old commissary
identification card is clipped. This
voids any possible duplication of
pictures or cards. Current card-hold-
ers requesting to be photographed
have their names checked against a
master IBM list of all employee de-
pendents as well as having their card
carefully examined. This procedure
precludes inssuance of new cards to
unauthorized persons and _ reserves
the commissary shopping privilege
for eligible Lago users.

No date has been set for the gene-
ral distribution of the new identity
cards. New applicants will receive
new cards, but shoppers with old
identity cards will continue to use
this means of identification until all
eligible commissary users are photo-
graphed and the general distribution
of the new cards announced.

Two types of cards are being pre-
pared. The first is a pink card that
will be issued to all permanent users
of the commissary. The card will in-
clude the holder’s photograph with
the LPD seal imprinted over part of

lieutenant governor, has been retain-
ed to represent the Lago Oil &
Transport Co., Ltd. in the Nether-

its operations make him particularly
well-qualified for this assignment.

SPAC Final
Insurance Drive |
Enrolls 1059

The earnest, hard-working aims of |
the members of the Special Problems |
Advisory Committee and their as-|
sistants reached fruition with the]
close of last week that brought forth
the announcement: 1059 Lago em-
ployees enrolled in the group life in- |
surance program during the six drive
days

Promotion of family benefits of
group life insurance was aimed at
the bulk of Lago employees who fail-
ed to avail themselves of the January
and February, 1956 opportunity for
group insurance when the program
was introduced. During the June 3,
4 and 5 sign-up days - the first of the
two-phase effort to enroll the more
than half of the employee body with- |
out insurance - 800 signed up. The
second period of June 11, 12 and 13
that completed the SPAC-sponsored

program brought in 259 additional
signers for a total of 1059 enrolled |

during the June days.

The original insurance program
begun early in 1956 enrolled 2434 em-
ployees or 46.3 per cent of the em-|
ployee body. The total now insured is
3493 upping the percentage of em-
ployees covered to 67.6. With the
over one thousand additional insure-
es, the average age of the covered
Lago employee is 36 years.

Employees may still take out the
low cost group life insurance. Now,

however, they will have to take a
physical examination. Applications
may be obtained from either the

Special Problems Advisory Commit-
tee or the Industrial Relations De-
partment.

John McHugh, born in Ireland, and boss of
the three-men team from the Custodis Corpo-
ration working here, takes that view when he
asks rhetorically "What's there to be afraid

faint-hcarts who worry about the scaffolding
by taking two planks, about an inch-and-a-half
2 putting them side by side on the ground,

he says.

2 throe men working here got into the bu-
1 curious ways, and only one had any
previous connection with high work. Mr. Mc-
Hugh, for example, took a job working a stack
in Dublin simply because a man offered it to
him, and it paid well. George Hough was a for-
mer s2aman (who called at Aruba a number of
times) who just drifted into the business. Pad-
dy Keen is following his father, who was a

solf never wanted to be anything else.

Their job here is a many-sided one.

tain stacks for industrial plants all over the
Yollowing an inch-by-inch inspection,

carried out with the aid of camera (with which
some of the pictures on this page were made),
the crew then does the necessary repairs. Thus,
in addition to everything else, the men must be
carpenters, masons, iron-workers and painters.

Once the No. 3 stack is painted they will
move to the No. 1 stack of Powerhouse No. 1,
then to Powerhouse No. 2.

Recruits to the trade are generally brought
up to the top by stages. He might work for a
week at only six feet above the ground, and
then, as he gains confidence, goes higher. Con-
fidence but never over-confidence is the key to
success in this business.

Whether a man loses that confidence after
a slip, or after some-one else’s accident, de-
pends entirely on himself. Mr. McHugh recalls
one case in which a scaffolding on a stack
wasn’t taut on one side. A man stepped on the
plank, and the whole thing dropped down
about nine inches before it caught and tighten-
ed itself like it should have. But the man had
frozen in fear, and it took two or three others
to get him down to the ground. He never went

U.S. Supermarkets
Host to Lago

Commissary Men

If the Lago commissaries should suddenly burst
forth with new shopping aids, merchandizing at-
tractions and product handling, it will not be by
accident. Rather, the improvement in operations
will be the result of training eight commissary
supervisors in the United States supermarkets of
Food Fair, H. C. Bohack, Penn Fruit and Daitzh
Shopwell.

Of the eight, five have been northward and have
returned with reports of amazing stores that sell
just about everything, glitter and gleam with
modern accessories and have automatic con-
trivances at every turn. The observational train-
ing started with H. L. Dammers and D. G. Ri-
chards. Their travels about the metropolitan area
of New York and Philadelphia took them through
the stores and warehouses of Food Fair in Linden,
New Jersey, H. C. Bohack in Brooklyn and Penn
Fruit in Philadelphia. They were joined in their
experiences by J. M. La Cruz, M. Pope and J. Thy-
zen, who made like observational trips. Still to go
are R. H. Vint, J. W. Sherman and F. C. Ciccarelli,
all of the General Services Department.

The first two to leave under the training pro-
gram were Mr. Dammers and Mr. Richards with
the latter getting something of a jump on the pro-
gram by being in the United States on vacation
and actually purchasing in the super markets
similar to those he later observed. Mr. Richards’

presence in the United States served Mr. Dammers
nicely, however. He had someone to meet him at
Idlewild Airport when he disembarked from the
plane that carried him from Curacao to New York.
From the airport the two went to the Hotel Ab-
bey, their headquarters during the training assign-
ment. And from the hotel the next morning they
went to the office of the Standard Oil Co. (N.J.)
where modes of metropolitan travel were explain-
ed. This included conveyances the likes of busses,
subwa trains, ferries and taxis. All proved to be
monster vehicles of confusion. Well they might.
They confuse the average U. S. visitor to New
York, let alone Lago’s Dammers and Richards in
the United States on their first visit. In fact,
it was the first time either of the men had left the
Caribbean.

But once they made their contacts with person-
nel of Bohack and Food Fair they were in good
hands. At Bohack it was Robert Reilly, assistant
advertising manager, and at Food Fair it was Wil-
liam Gehrke, training coordinator, who led Mr.
Dammers and Mr. Richards on the observational
tour that opened all doors and answered all
questions pertaining to merchandizing operations
and policies of the two mammoth chain stores.
Everywhere they went they were treated with ex-
ceptional courtesy; their questions answered com-

Lago career has been in the pipe
craft where he first began April 5,

1928. He started as a pipefitter and
received his present position of fore-
man through a promotion last year.
Mr. Gonzalez, according to Mr.
Proterra, is one of the best wire
cable splicers in Lago’s employ. His
entire 30 years has been spent in the
Mechanical Department with the rig-
gers. He first came to work for Lago
April 1, 1928. Mr. Gonzalez later was
promoted to corporal C, the position
he now holds.
| The third Mechanical Department
employee to receive a 30-year award
was Mr. Felipe, who started with
Lago June 11, 1928. As with the two
other Mechanical Department em-
ployees, Mr. Felipe’s service has been
in one place. He started as a mechan-
ic in the garage and has remained
there working to the position of fore-
man which he now holds. Mr. Felipe
told the group that he had early as-
pirations of becoming an _ aero-

it is a "bit too late.” He did, though,
take an active part in the now de-
funct Caribbean Flying Association
as a pilot and mechanic.

The fourth 30-year employee to be
honored was Mr. Quant, who com-
pleted his length of service exactly
30 years to the day he started, all
| without a deductible absence or lust-
time injury. He began his employ
June 14, 1928 in Receiving and Ship.

a dockman. M. E. Fisk of the Process
Department reminisced that it was
Mr. Quant who caught the famous
Aruba white rattlesnakes for Ralph
Watson, former Receiving and Ship-

Entre e oradernan invitado tabatin Gezaghebber Tem-

manera Don Bosco mester florece cu tur determinacion
cu por worde lamta asina cu futuro generacionnan por

Maestro di ceremonianan nae habrimento tabata

mente pastoor di parokia di Santa Teresita y Frére Ed-

cion di Don Bosco y trabao di supervision.

Commissary

pletely, machines put through de-

monstrations for their observation,

and on many occasions the two men

were allowed to test run equipment.

Their visits included both modern

supermarkets and rambling ware-

houses. At Food Fair, a tremendous

enterprise with over 300 stores, Mr.

Gehrke took them through the Lin-

den warehouses stacked deep as far

as the eye could see with meat, fruit

and boxed products. Of particular in-

terest to both was the chilled meat

room that housed, only briefly, hun-

dreds of sides of beef hung on a net-

work of overhead railing two and

one-half miles long. This particular
meat locker employs ultra violet rays
in a tenderizing process. The meat
remains here no more than 48 hours;

it moves that rapidly out of the
warehouse to supply 90 Food Fair
stores serviced by this particular)
locker. Also pointed out to the two
Lago men was the lack of humidity
in areas where meat is stored. They |
were told that humidity causes loss
of flavor.

Product Promotion

Students of merchandizing, Mr.
Dammers and Mr. Richards were
shown the ways and means of in-
ducing sales and creating product
traffic. Mr. Gehrke, in particular, ex-
plained and set out examples how
Food Fair shelves its food items by
color, package or bottle size and pro-
duct. Cleanliness, orderlines and
availability of product keynote super
market-customer relations. Such
philosophies of everyday selling
quickly became part of the copious
notes taken by the two men for use
in transplanting ideas to Lago’s
commissaries.

While Lago’s envoys to the United

States learned about supermarket
operation, people they contacted
learned about Aruba. A _ standing

question in all stores was: Where is
Aruba?” The interrogators were told
and all now know not only where the
island is, but also that the sun shines

all year long, a fact that many Bo-
hack and Food Fair employees found
hard to believe.

Out of all the travels came a true
appreciation for Mr. Dammers and
Mr. Richards and the men that fol-
lowed of the most efficient methods
used in supermarket operations. The
men were all amazed” at the num-
ber of items the stores carry. All|
were equally impressed with the}
neatness and efficiency of modern,
well organized stores. |

The commissaries profited by the
training trip the day Mr. Dammers
returned to work. One of his first ob-
servations was that he had the
answer to the problem of keeping
customer’s purchases separated. It’s
a simple device placed between cus-
tomer’s purchases at the checkout
counters. The separator was exhibit-
ed to him at one of the super-
markets, and became the first idea}
seen in metropolitan New York
stores to be put into practice here.
| Naturally, the men took in many
of the breathtaking sights of New
York and surrounding area. But to}
Mr. Dammers one will remain in-|
delibly in mind: "the madhouse that
is the New York subway at 5 p.m.”

Of the four, they longest service
belongs to George H. Arens of the
Mechnical Department. He has over
30 years of service. His employment |
tenure was recognized in the first
group presentation for 30-year em-|

His 30 years with Lago have all been
in the Mechanical Department. Much
of Mr. Arends’ work has been in con-
struction, and as an old timer he
helped build much of the refinery.
His first job was that of a stevedore
foreman. He later became a_ labor
foreman and rigger foreman. Promo-
tions elevated him
to the posts of
subforeman first

foreman. In 19

he became a sub-
foreman in the
Yard, the position

addition to his re-
finery duties, Mr.
Arens has, in the

past, been r
sible for a
many of the round-the-world sailors
that berth briefly at Lago for minor
repairs to their crafts.

years in the electrical craft. He be-
gan work at Lago in Nuvember, 1928

hrough the tradesman ranks and in
November, 1936 was promoted to
electrician B. One year later he was
elevated to the electrician A position
he now holds. In June, 1951 he was
transferred to the crafts division of
General Services Department where
he became quite well known to many
Seroe Colorado residents.

Mr. Morgan is from St. Vincent,
B. W. I.; and plans to retire to that
