Lago Supervisors,
Work Leaders Take

Contract Training

Armed with contract and explanatory notes pertaining to, some 600
Lago supervisors and work leaders set about last week to learn the
ramifications of the new agreement between the Lago Employee Coun-
cil and the company covering staff and regular employees. Theirs was

the task to ascertain the implemen

in goneral and their own specifically.

To train completely, Lago furnish-
ed the time and the trainers. When
the new contract was signed April
6 ending three months of negotia-
tions, it was decided that all super-
visors and work leaders and those
who had need to know the workings
of the contract should have the new
document fully explained. The first
step was the drafting of detailed,
complete explanatory notes to make
the contract as easily understand-
able as possible. This voluminous and
ting work was completed by T-
F. Eagan of the Personnel Relations
Division of the Industrial Relations
Department.

To reach the many men involved it
was decided to select 18 men from
seven departments, train them, and
then they, in turn, could handle the
training sessions needed to cover
their own groups. Mr. Eagan was
selected to lead these training ses-
sions assisted by E. F. Welch, Train-
ning Division head. The men received
six three-hour briefings which cov-
ered all phases of the contract. De-

| pending on the application in their
| departments, these trainers conduct-

ed sessions that ran from three to
nine hours, and in size from the In-
dustrial and Public Relations De-
partments’ two groups of 15 to the

29 Concerns Involved

Jersey Compan

y Flatly Denies

Charges Levied in U.S. Suit

A- spokesman for the Standard Oi
ally denied allegations set against

1 Company (New Jersey) categoric-
the company in an indictment re-

turned May 29 by a United States Federal grand jury. The Jersey Com-
pany along with 28 other United States oil concerns have been accused

of conspiring to raise and fix crud
Suez Canal crises 18 months ago.

In denying the charges of the first |
criminal price-fixing case of nation-|
al scope in the United States brought
by the Justice Department in the last
20 years, the Jersey Company spokes-
man said that "this company nor any|
of its affiliates has violated the anti- |
trust laws. We want to make it clear |
that any charges it (the indictment)
contains must be proved at a trial.
We are confident that at that time
our position will be sustained.”

The indictment, which the Federal |
grand jury has been working on since
March, 1957, and came as no surprise |
to the oil companies involved, charges
the 29 oil concerns with violations of
Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust
Act. which prohibits conspiracies in
restraint of trade. Fifteen of the oil
companies, including the Jersey Com- |
pany, were selected by President}
Eisenhower to form an emergency
committee to help overcome European
oil shortages brought on by the Suez
Canal closing. The 15 companies were
exempted from the antitrust laws for |
the purpose of moving oil to the
needy countries in the most efficient
and rapid manner. They were spe-
cifically not authorized to exchange
information or make agreements on}
prices. In early January, 1957, prices
of crude oil generally rose 35 U. S.
cents a barrel in the Southwest area
of the United States. Shortly after-
ward retail prices of gasoline, home-
heating oil and other products re-|
flected a one cent a gallon increase
in most areas. These increases keyed
the indictment. It read:

Indictment Reads

"During January, 1957, for the
purpose and with the intent of rais-
ing, fixing and stabilizing the prices
of crude oil and automotive gasoline
throughout the affected market, (a)
each defendant engaged in purchas-
ing crude oil would increase its post-
ed crude prices... and (b) each de- |
fendant engaged in marketing auto-

motive gasoline would increase its
prices throughout its marketing
area.”

The affected market covers the

entire United States with the excep-
tion of five western states.

All major oil companies with the
exception of those operating ex-
clusively on the west coast are in-

cluded in the indictment, as well as
smaller

a sizable number of
panies.

employees last month. Their ser-
vice accomplishment was acknow-
ledged at the second monthly
group presentation presided over by
Executive Vice-President F. E. Grif-

Opening the award occasion be-
fore members of management-staff |
and representatives of the r

pients’ departments, Mr. Griffin ex-
pressed his sincere congratulations
to the men for their outstanding ser-
vice records. He complimented them
on their faithful efforts that aided
the company’s progress, and pointed
out that four of the five men had
completed their 30 years without a
lost time injury. Mr. Griffin also made
mention of the fact that one of the
recipients - Joseph Irausquin - had at-
tained his 30 years of credited service
without a single deductible absence.

The first award was made to Mr.
Joseph of the General Service De-
partment. Speaking for his employee,
N. M. Shirley, department superin-
tendent, said it was gratifying to
have a person like Mr. Joseph in his
department. He is always jovial and
seems never to be without a_ big
smile, related Mr. Shirley. The 30-
year employee has been in General
Services the full span of his service.
He started Jan. 1, 1928 as a porter,
He

later was promoted to cold-

Rasmijn, popular
known as "Chips," was referred by
Mr. Griffin as one of the
cowboys” and a man the
vice-president has known "from way
back.” His department superinten-
dent, J. R. Proterra, noted that Mr.
| Rasmijn is responsible for a lot of the
concrete that has been poured at La-
| go over the years. Mr. Rasmijn began
his Lago career April 30, 1928 as a
laborer. He later was transferred to
the mason craft where he is now a
foreman.

From the Process Department came
Mr. Irausquin, the employee without
a single deductible absence. A cor-
poral A dockman in Receiving and
Shipping, he worked in the pipe craft
in 1928, the year he came to Lago.
The following year he was transfer-
red to the Process Department where,
ccording to G. L. MacNutt, depart-
ment superintendent, Mr. Irausquin
has been one of the men who stead-
fastly year after year load and un-
load the many ships that call at La-
go Harbor. He is the father of Pedro
J. Irausquin, Lago Vocational School
graduate, class of 1946, and the Al-

lentown (Pa.) High School scholar-
ship winner of 1950.

The second Mechanical Department
30-year employee to be honored was
Mr. de Cuba. His 30 years have all
been spent in that department where
he was originally employed Feb. 28,
1926. Deductible absences pushed
back his 30-year date. He is now a
cleanout shift foreman and has the
distinction of working without a lost-
time accident even though he has, ac-
cording to Mr. Proterra, "one of the
toughest jobs in the refinery.’’ Mr. de
Cuba has three sons who are Lago

employees. |

The fifth recipient was Capt. Fer-
nando. Acting Marine Manager J. H
Brown, III commented that Capt.
Fernando is the senior tugboat skip-
per in the harbor, and has _ been
shepherding the goliaths of the sea
in and out the harbor for 26 years
Capt. Fernando’s service originally
was with the British-Mexican Petro-
leum Company, the Ebano Oil Com-
pany and Esso Transportation Com-
pany. His starting date is recorded
as Aug. 27, 1925. He came ashore |
with Lago Oct. 31, 1954

ANKED BY J. J. Pfaff and J. L. Dortch is Hendrik Rasmijn of the
Mechanical Department. Presently a mason foreman, Mr. Rasmijn started
in 1928 as a laborer.

LAGO MANA

The Aruba Golf Club the evening of May 24
found itself crowded with some 650 Lago su-
pervisors. All members of the management
team, the men were gathered together for the
sixth consecutive year. The reasons, fourfold:
felicitous imbibition, delectable ingestion, can-
tatrice appreciation and just plan ole, down
to earth fun, which everybody had. And all of
it was spirited on the wing of what has become
to be known as the Management Party. In ad-
dition to fellowship, food, females and fun,
the party-goers were treated to fine jazz-type
music as interpreted by Lennie’s All-Stars, a
four-piece combo with bounce, man, bounce.
Following Lennie and his hot horn was Leo
Echteld and his ensemble who played for the
undulating, pulsating entertainer, Azuquita.
From Miami came the man and wife song and
dance duo David and Amorah. Theirs was a
half-hour stint that included songs, dance and
humor. When Azuquita’s rhythmic rolls con-
cluded, Doc Hatfield, who emceed the show,
called the evening to an end. It was, by con-

Teachers Visit Pupils

Normal practice dictates that
pupils go to the teachers to remain
with them the entire school day and
then some, depending on the devilry
exposed. Just recently, however, the
faculty of the Lago Community
School, less chicanery, turned the
tables on the pupils; the teachers
visited them. During the annual
Teachers’ Institute, conducted to
promote teacher interest and dis-
cussion on academic, behavior and
communication problems as they
affect the school, teacher and pupil,
the Lago faculty visited the Abra-
ham de Veer School in San Nicolas,
the Juliana, Princess Beatrix and
Aruba Technical schools in Oranje-
stad. They observed, they listened,
they talked. Most important of all,
they became acquainted with many
of the students and their methods
of learning. Some of their visits are

shown here.

Lago Wins All Matches
In Whitsuntide Week End Play

For the first time in its official 11-year life, the athletic forces of La-

go swept a victorious path across

Lago Sport Park the Whitsuntide

week end humbling the cricket and tennis representatives of CPIM.
Before large and enthusiastic tennis and cricket fans, the park stands
fairly seethed with excitement the three days Lago proved its superior-

ity:

The Colts match, played Satur-
day afternoon, afforded Lago its first
victory: Lago 124, CPIM 108. Cap-
tain of the Colts, J. Dosset, led his
side with 27 runs while gaining ad-
mirable support from S. Bacchus 21,
M. Horne 16 not out and L. Brooks 15.

The test match was played Sun-
day and Monday and throughout La-
go displayed a stronger style than
CPIM and maintained good perform-
ances that accounted not only for its
fine start but steady play both days.
While CPIM bowlers fared better on
Sunday, the home team still managed
to maintain its advantage. The final
afternoon Lago had 64 runs to make
for victory in two hours. The home)
batsmen scored the necessary runs in|

one and one-half hours. The final
score was Lago 231 and 64/4 and
CPIM 81 and 213.

Outstanding for Lago was the
scoring of Teddy Johnson, A. Per-|
rotte’s high bowling average, Mr. |

Johnson's batting average, P. Flan-
ders for the most wickets and Cap-
tain C. T. O. Nicholas, who was named

the outstanding Aruba player.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s tennis
matches were completely dominated
by Lago. The opening singles match,
second singles, was won by A. Tiam
Fook 6-0, 6-2 with little difficulty.
The match that followed provided
the spectators excellent tennis and
an amazing reversal of form. The
local champion and number one La-
go player, Jannie Brokke, lost the
first set of his match to CPIM’s Os-
car Hinds at love. It appeared to be
the beginning of a rout for the visitor,
but Brokke found himself and turn
the tables completely. The Lago re-
presentative swept the next two sets
6-1, 6-1 with ease. Brokke lost the
fifth game of the second set and the
first game of the third set.

Stewart Malmberg teamed with

Brokke to win the doubles on Sun-
day defeating Hinds and his partner
D. Braithwaite 6-2, 6-4.

Following the test match Monday,
Acting Marine Manager J. H. Brown
III presented both cricket and tennis
trophies.

IN PREPARATION for their match, A. Tiam Fook, left, and CPIM’s D.
Brathwaite, right, adjust height of net. Lago won both the singles and
doubles tennis matches for a clean sweep of all Whitsuntide week end
activities.

To train completely, Lago furnish-

the new contract was signed April

who had need to know the workings

step was the drafting of detailed,
complete explanatory notes to make
the contract as easily understand-

ting work was completed by T-

Division of the Industrial Relations
Department.

To reach the many men involved it
was decided to select 18 men from
seven departments, train them, and
then they, in turn, could handle the
training sessions needed to cover
their own groups. Mr. Eagan was
selected to lead these training ses-
sions assisted by E. F. Welch, Train-
ning Division head. The men received
six three-hour briefings which cov-
ered all phases of the contract. De-

ed sessions that ran from three to
nine hours, and in size from the In-
dustrial and Public Relations De-

Jersey Compan

y Flatly Denies

Charges Levied in U.S. Suit

A- spokesman for the Standard Oi
ally denied allegations set against

1 Company (New Jersey) categoric-
the company in an indictment re-

turned May 29 by a United States Federal grand jury. The Jersey Com-
pany along with 28 other United States oil concerns have been accused

of conspiring to raise and fix crud
Suez Canal crises 18 months ago.

In denying the charges of the first |
criminal price-fixing case of nation-|
al scope in the United States brought
by the Justice Department in the last
20 years, the Jersey Company spokes-
man said that "this company nor any|
of its affiliates has violated the anti- |
trust laws. We want to make it clear |
that any charges it (the indictment)
contains must be proved at a trial.
We are confident that at that time
our position will be sustained.”

The indictment, which the Federal |
grand jury has been working on since
March, 1957, and came as no surprise |
to the oil companies involved, charges
the 29 oil concerns with violations of
Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust
Act. which prohibits conspiracies in
restraint of trade. Fifteen of the oil
companies, including the Jersey Com- |
pany, were selected by President}
Eisenhower to form an emergency
committee to help overcome European
oil shortages brought on by the Suez
Canal closing. The 15 companies were
exempted from the antitrust laws for |
the purpose of moving oil to the
needy countries in the most efficient
and rapid manner. They were spe-
cifically not authorized to exchange
information or make agreements on}
prices. In early January, 1957, prices
of crude oil generally rose 35 U. S.
cents a barrel in the Southwest area
of the United States. Shortly after-
ward retail prices of gasoline, home-
heating oil and other products re-|
flected a one cent a gallon increase
in most areas. These increases keyed
the indictment. It read:

Indictment Reads

"During January, 1957, for the
purpose and with the intent of rais-
ing, fixing and stabilizing the prices
of crude oil and automotive gasoline
throughout the affected market, (a)
each defendant engaged in purchas-
ing crude oil would increase its post-
ed crude prices... and (b) each de- |
fendant engaged in marketing auto-

motive gasoline would increase its
prices throughout its marketing
area.”

The affected market covers the

entire United States with the excep-
tion of five western states.

All major oil companies with the
exception of those operating ex-
clusively on the west coast are in-

cluded in the indictment, as well as
smaller

a sizable number of
panies.

recipients - Joseph Irausquin - had at-
tained his 30 years of credited service
without a single deductible absence.

The first award was made to Mr.
Joseph of the General Service De-

30-year employee to be honored was
Mr. de Cuba. His 30 years have all
been spent in that department where
he was originally employed Feb. 28,
1926. Deductible absences pushed
back his 30-year date. He is now a
cleanout shift foreman and has the
distinction of working without a lost-

cording to Mr. Proterra, "one of the
toughest jobs in the refinery.’’ Mr. de

Capt. Fernando’s service originally
was with the British-Mexican Petro-

LAGO MANA

The Aruba Golf Club the evening of May 24
found itself crowded with some 650 Lago su-
pervisors. All members of the management
team, the men were gathered together for the
sixth consecutive year. The reasons, fourfold:
felicitous imbibition, delectable ingestion, can-

to earth fun, which everybody had. And all of
it was spirited on the wing of what has become
to be known as the Management Party. In ad-

the party-goers were treated to fine jazz-type
music as interpreted by Lennie’s All-Stars, a
four-piece combo with bounce, man, bounce.
Following Lennie and his hot horn was Leo

undulating, pulsating entertainer, Azuquita.
From Miami came the man and wife song and

Teachers Visit Pupils

Normal practice dictates that
pupils go to the teachers to remain
with them the entire school day and
then some, depending on the devilry
exposed. Just recently, however, the
faculty of the Lago Community
School, less chicanery, turned the
tables on the pupils; the teachers
visited them. During the annual
Teachers’ Institute, conducted to
promote teacher interest and dis-
cussion on academic, behavior and
communication problems as they
affect the school, teacher and pupil,
the Lago faculty visited the Abra-
ham de Veer School in San Nicolas,
the Juliana, Princess Beatrix and
Aruba Technical schools in Oranje-
stad. They observed, they listened,
they talked. Most important of all,
they became acquainted with many
of the students and their methods
of learning. Some of their visits are

shown here.

Lago Wins All Matches
In Whitsuntide Week End Play

For the first time in its official 11-year life, the athletic forces of La-

go swept a victorious path across

Lago Sport Park the Whitsuntide

week end humbling the cricket and tennis representatives of CPIM.
Before large and enthusiastic tennis and cricket fans, the park stands
fairly seethed with excitement the three days Lago proved its superior-

ity:

The Colts match, played Satur-
day afternoon, afforded Lago its first
victory: Lago 124, CPIM 108. Cap-
tain of the Colts, J. Dosset, led his
side with 27 runs while gaining ad-
mirable support from S. Bacchus 21,
M. Horne 16 not out and L. Brooks 15.

The test match was played Sun-
day and Monday and throughout La-
go displayed a stronger style than
CPIM and maintained good perform-
ances that accounted not only for its
fine start but steady play both days.
While CPIM bowlers fared better on
Sunday, the home team still managed
to maintain its advantage. The final
afternoon Lago had 64 runs to make
for victory in two hours. The home)
batsmen scored the necessary runs in|

one and one-half hours. The final
score was Lago 231 and 64/4 and
CPIM 81 and 213.

Outstanding for Lago was the
scoring of Teddy Johnson, A. Per-|
rotte’s high bowling average, Mr. |

Johnson's batting average, P. Flan-
ders for the most wickets and Cap-
tain C. T. O. Nicholas, who was named

the outstanding Aruba player.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s tennis
matches were completely dominated
by Lago. The opening singles match,
second singles, was won by A. Tiam
Fook 6-0, 6-2 with little difficulty.
The match that followed provided
the spectators excellent tennis and
an amazing reversal of form. The
local champion and number one La-
go player, Jannie Brokke, lost the
first set of his match to CPIM’s Os-
car Hinds at love. It appeared to be
the beginning of a rout for the visitor,
but Brokke found himself and turn
the tables completely. The Lago re-
presentative swept the next two sets
6-1, 6-1 with ease. Brokke lost the
fifth game of the second set and the
first game of the third set.

Stewart Malmberg teamed with

Brokke to win the doubles on Sun-
day defeating Hinds and his partner
D. Braithwaite 6-2, 6-4.

Following the test match Monday,
Acting Marine Manager J. H. Brown
III presented both cricket and tennis
trophies.

IN PREPARATION for their match, A. Tiam Fook, left, and CPIM’s D.
Brathwaite, right, adjust height of net. Lago won both the singles and
doubles tennis matches for a clean sweep of all Whitsuntide week end
activities.
