EXECUTIVE VICE president F. E.

March 15,

Griffin smilingly accepts a 30-year
Mingus. The ceremony took place in

the Executive Committee meeting Feb. 25.

VICE PRESIDENTE ehecutivo F. E:

- Griffin ta acepta cu un sonrisa un

certificado pa 30 anja di servicio for di Presidente O. Mingus. E ceremonia
a tuma lugar den reunion di Executive Committee Feb. 25.

After 30 Years

Griffin Looks Back
On Lago Development

Completing 30 years of company service, Executive Vice President
F. E. Griffin, was awarded a service emblem and certificate at the

Feb. 25 Executive Committee meet
presentation.

Of the 30 years, nearly 28 have
with the Mexican Petroleum Cor-
poration in New England. Mr. Grif-
fin came to Lago from the 30,000-
barrel refinery of the New England
Oil Refining Co. at Fall River, Mas-
sachusetts where he worked for the
Mexican Petroleum Corp., as a pe-
troleum inspector.

He had heard of Aruba earlier that
year when he was on a loan assign-
ment to Mexican Petroleum’s Mar-
keting Department, working on the
problem of adapting fuel oil burning
for powerhouses. He was offered a
laboratory job at the Aruba Refine-
ry then under construction and en-
couraged to take it by Pan-American
Petroleum, at that time Lago’s own-
ers.

Challenge

Mr. Griffin regarded the oppor-
tunity as a challenge with the flavor
of opportunity, and promptly ac-
cepted. He arrived in Aruba and
nothing he saw changed his mind. It
was the time of great construction
activity when the refinery was
changing from a mere transshipping
point to a huge producing unit, and
life was tough. He lived in a bunga-
low with 15 other bachelors, two of
whom had to sleep in the kitchen. The
Dining Hall, then located at _ the
White House, was near Gate 2, and
the trip was made on foot, There
were no buses and few trucks. Later
Mr. Griffin acquired the distinction
of being one of the first occupants
of Bachelor Quarters No. 1, former
industrial relations offices, now be-
ing torn down. In those days, the re-
finery worked a 56-hour week, a cus-
tom that lasted through 1937.

On the rare time off the job, how-
ever, the men had plenty to do. There
was baseball, swimming, sailing, and
a crude golf course laid out in an
area now occupied by fuel oil tanks.
When the desire for real adventure
stirred, the men could undertake a
trip to Oranjestad, which often took
up to 2'/2 hours over unpaved roads
in hard-seated cariocas. There was a
small hotel and a few restaurants,

ing. President O. Mingus made the

been spent at Lago, the remainder

Griffin’s career was moving along
with Lago. He left the laboratory
late in 1929 for the operating depart-
ment and assisted in starting up
cracking units, which were the first
of their type in the industry. Hight
combination units went into opera-
tion and before the original units
were completed the three visbreakers
were contracted for. Shortly after
this, in the early 1930's, the light ends
fractionaters and gas absorbtion
plant went on stream. Mr. Griffin
points out that the original cracking
units make a good case history of
rapid obsolescence: so swiftly did
they go out of date that the 1929
cracking units were remodeled in

1935-36, and 5-8 units were again

remodeled in 1939-40. Remodeling is

still going on at present.

Aruban Students Enjoy Weekend

Forty Aruban youths studying in
Holland spent an "Aruba Weekend”
at the Blaricum YMCA early in Fe-
bruary. A feature of the get-together
was an Aruban-style meal, complete
with funchi made with cornmeal.
Dinner was prepared by Mrs. E
Boelhouwers, (Nee Franken) wife of
Aruba’s chief constable who retired
last year and returned to Holland.

More than any one, Rev. W. J. H
Baart, pastor of a Blaricum church,
and from 1950 to 1956 pastor of the
Protestant Church in Oranjestad, was
responsible for bringing the students
together for a touch of home.

Early in the year, Rev. Baart ad-
dressed a request to the Public Rela-
tions Department for help in finding
tho funchi for the meal. It was an
easy matter to bundle the funchi into
the mail and send it along so that
the youngsters wouldn't be disap-
pointed.

One result of the weekend, in ad-
dition to the immediate enjoyment
by the youngsters, was the decision
to have frequent reunions at Blari-
cum, especially during the Christmas
season, when thoughts of home and
family far away will fill them with
a desire for companionship.

Jersey Forms New
Research Affiliate

Standard Oil Company (New Jer-
sey) has announced formation of a
new production research affiliate to
direct its geological, geophysical and
production research activities, which
were previously carried out under
contract by The Carter Oil Company.

The new affiliate, to be known as
Jersey Production Research Com-
pany, will take over Carter Research
Laboratories now located in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. All existing patents, pro-
cesses and agreements related to oil
exploration and production will be
assigned to the new company.

Jersey Standard said that forma-
tion of the new affiliate was dictated
by the great increase in growth and
importance to the company and to
the industry of production research
activities.

Efforts of the new company will be
directed toward development of more
efficient and more economical
methods of finding and producing oil
and coordination of such work with
Jersey's affiliates here and abroad.

Began in 1925

Origin of the present modern facil-
ities at Tulsa dates back to 1925
when the Carter Oil Company esta-
blished a small crude oil testing la-
boratory. In 1935, a production re-
search center was established in Tul-
sa under Carter Oil’s direction to
conduct work under contract for Jer-
sey Standard.

Activity at the 20-acre Tulsa la-
boratories site is currently divided
into ten sections: productions re-
search, production engineering, geo-
logical research, recovery research,
recovery engineering, geochemical
research, geophysical research, geo-
physical engineering, drilling re-
search and technical information.

The headquarters of the Jersey
Production Research Company will
remain in Tulsa and the staff of
about 400 men and women will be
transferred from Carter Oil to the
staff of the new company.

Annually, organizations, groups, individuals plan, build,
paint and dress in preparation for the gala carnival weekend.
Their weeks of effort, time and money culminate in a myriad
of festive colors that wind their way through the streets of
San Nicolas and Oranjestad. Music, singing, dancing and
pretty girls — smiling majestically in regal fittings of car-

year the reigning queen, Milda van der Linden, was selected
in the presence of HRH Princess Beatrix. Miss van der Lin-

At Ceremony

Hundred; of persons, includng representatives from the island gov-
ernment, Lago, the consular corps and various island organizations,
were on hand March 1 to take part in the opening and dedication of

A former bunkhouse, the building was made available to the organ-

a
new and large YMCA with complete
athletic and recreational facilities.
Dr. K. H. de Boer, after a congra-
tulatory message, made the opening

official when he cut a ribbon that
stretched across the door. Guests
were then taken on a tour of the

building.

Other speakers included President
O. Mingus and B. Teagle of Lago,
Mrs. Alida Lampe, and Ralph Papa,
the YMCA secretary.

In his rem s Mr. Papa explained
that the goal of the YMCA was to
train youths to be good citizens and
to develop in them clean bodies and
minds. He plans an extensive athle-
tic and recreational program for the
members of the Y, including volley-
ball, tennis, American football, base-
|ball, and indoor games such as table
|tennis, checkers and chess. A num-
ber of hobby clubs will be formed,
and one of them, the Stamp Club, is
already meeting.
| The temporary building will house
|all of the YMCA activities until a
new and modern building will be
|erected. A drive to collect funds for
this purpose is under way.
| To be included in the YMCA pro-

up. The various age groups will have
activities suited to their abilities
in both the sports and clubs. Boys
clubs, for members up to 21, are also
being considered.

(Continued from page 1)

Initially Lago’s market was fuel
oil to the U. S., South America and
the United Kingdom, and gasoline to,
the U. S. In 1932, introduction of
high U. S. tariffs and the sale of La-
go to Standard Oil Company (New
Jersey), pushed Lago’s markets lite-
rally world-wide. The variety of pro-
duets shipped increased sharply.
When this started Mr. Griffin was|
an operator |

In the middle 1930's expansion
continued, and by 1937 Mr. Griffin,
as general foreman of cracking fol-
lowed by the same position in LOF,
was a part of it. As Lago became a
world supplier, and contributed its
enormous bit to the Allied war ef-
fort, Mr. Griffin progressed in the
organization, In June, 1945 he was
division superintendent, and a year
later, was made process superinten-
dent. During the Korean conflict he
served general superintendent,
and in 1955 was promot:d to general
manager. He became executive vice
president in April, 1957.

Two aspects of his career with
Lago have given Mr. Griffin his
eatest satisfactions. One is having
participated in training employees
from Aruba and from other areas to
handle the vast number of complex

After 30 Years

Griffin Looks Back
On Lago Development

Completing 30 years of company service, Executive Vice President
F. E. Griffin, was awarded a service emblem and certificate at the

Feb. 25 Executive Committee meet
presentation.

Of the 30 years, nearly 28 have
with the Mexican Petroleum Cor-
poration in New England. Mr. Grif-
fin came to Lago from the 30,000-
barrel refinery of the New England
Oil Refining Co. at Fall River, Mas-
sachusetts where he worked for the
Mexican Petroleum Corp., as a pe-
troleum inspector.

He had heard of Aruba earlier that
year when he was on a loan assign-
ment to Mexican Petroleum’s Mar-
keting Department, working on the
problem of adapting fuel oil burning
for powerhouses. He was offered a
laboratory job at the Aruba Refine-
ry then under construction and en-
couraged to take it by Pan-American
Petroleum, at that time Lago’s own-
ers.

Challenge

Mr. Griffin regarded the oppor-
tunity as a challenge with the flavor
of opportunity, and promptly ac-
cepted. He arrived in Aruba and
nothing he saw changed his mind. It
was the time of great construction
activity when the refinery was
changing from a mere transshipping
point to a huge producing unit, and
life was tough. He lived in a bunga-
low with 15 other bachelors, two of
whom had to sleep in the kitchen. The
Dining Hall, then located at _ the
White House, was near Gate 2, and
the trip was made on foot, There
were no buses and few trucks. Later
Mr. Griffin acquired the distinction
of being one of the first occupants
of Bachelor Quarters No. 1, former
industrial relations offices, now be-
ing torn down. In those days, the re-
finery worked a 56-hour week, a cus-
tom that lasted through 1937.

On the rare time off the job, how-
ever, the men had plenty to do. There
was baseball, swimming, sailing, and
a crude golf course laid out in an
area now occupied by fuel oil tanks.
When the desire for real adventure
stirred, the men could undertake a
trip to Oranjestad, which often took
up to 2'/2 hours over unpaved roads
in hard-seated cariocas. There was a
small hotel and a few restaurants,

ing. President O. Mingus made the

been spent at Lago, the remainder

Griffin’s career was moving along
with Lago. He left the laboratory
late in 1929 for the operating depart-
ment and assisted in starting up
cracking units, which were the first
of their type in the industry. Hight
combination units went into opera-
tion and before the original units
were completed the three visbreakers
were contracted for. Shortly after
this, in the early 1930's, the light ends
fractionaters and gas absorbtion
plant went on stream. Mr. Griffin
points out that the original cracking
units make a good case history of
rapid obsolescence: so swiftly did
they go out of date that the 1929
cracking units were remodeled in

1935-36, and 5-8 units were again

remodeled in 1939-40. Remodeling is

still going on at present.

Aruban Students Enjoy Weekend

Forty Aruban youths studying in
Holland spent an "Aruba Weekend”
at the Blaricum YMCA early in Fe-
bruary. A feature of the get-together
was an Aruban-style meal, complete
with funchi made with cornmeal.
Dinner was prepared by Mrs. E
Boelhouwers, (Nee Franken) wife of
Aruba’s chief constable who retired
last year and returned to Holland.

More than any one, Rev. W. J. H
Baart, pastor of a Blaricum church,
and from 1950 to 1956 pastor of the
Protestant Church in Oranjestad, was
responsible for bringing the students
together for a touch of home.

Early in the year, Rev. Baart ad-
dressed a request to the Public Rela-
tions Department for help in finding
tho funchi for the meal. It was an
easy matter to bundle the funchi into
the mail and send it along so that
the youngsters wouldn't be disap-
pointed.

One result of the weekend, in ad-
dition to the immediate enjoyment
by the youngsters, was the decision
to have frequent reunions at Blari-
cum, especially during the Christmas
season, when thoughts of home and
family far away will fill them with
a desire for companionship.

Jersey Forms New
Research Affiliate

Standard Oil Company (New Jer-
sey) has announced formation of a
new production research affiliate to
direct its geological, geophysical and
production research activities, which
were previously carried out under
contract by The Carter Oil Company.

The new affiliate, to be known as
Jersey Production Research Com-
pany, will take over Carter Research
Laboratories now located in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. All existing patents, pro-
cesses and agreements related to oil
exploration and production will be
assigned to the new company.

Jersey Standard said that forma-
tion of the new affiliate was dictated
by the great increase in growth and
importance to the company and to
the industry of production research
activities.

Efforts of the new company will be
directed toward development of more
efficient and more economical
methods of finding and producing oil
and coordination of such work with
Jersey's affiliates here and abroad.

Began in 1925

Origin of the present modern facil-
ities at Tulsa dates back to 1925
when the Carter Oil Company esta-
blished a small crude oil testing la-
boratory. In 1935, a production re-
search center was established in Tul-
sa under Carter Oil’s direction to
conduct work under contract for Jer-
sey Standard.

Activity at the 20-acre Tulsa la-
boratories site is currently divided
into ten sections: productions re-
search, production engineering, geo-
logical research, recovery research,
recovery engineering, geochemical
research, geophysical research, geo-
physical engineering, drilling re-
search and technical information.

The headquarters of the Jersey
Production Research Company will
remain in Tulsa and the staff of
about 400 men and women will be
transferred from Carter Oil to the
staff of the new company.

Annually, organizations, groups, individuals plan, build,
paint and dress in preparation for the gala carnival weekend.
Their weeks of effort, time and money culminate in a myriad
of festive colors that wind their way through the streets of
San Nicolas and Oranjestad. Music, singing, dancing and
pretty girls — smiling majestically in regal fittings of car-
nival queens — set the note for the jubilee weekend. This
year the reigning queen, Milda van der Linden, was selected
in the presence of HRH Princess Beatrix. Miss van der Lin-
den then proceeded with her royal carnival entourage in full,
gay regalia as pictured on these pages.

Z New Aruba YMCA Building

At Ceremony

Hundred; of persons, includng representatives from the island gov-
ernment, Lago, the consular corps and various island organizations,
were on hand March 1 to take part in the opening and dedication of

A former bunkhouse, the building was made available to the organ-

a
new and large YMCA with complete
athletic and recreational facilities.
Dr. K. H. de Boer, after a congra-
tulatory message, made the opening

official when he cut a ribbon that
stretched across the door. Guests
were then taken on a tour of the

building.

Other speakers included President
O. Mingus and B. Teagle of Lago,
Mrs. Alida Lampe, and Ralph Papa,
the YMCA secretary.

In his rem s Mr. Papa explained
that the goal of the YMCA was to
train youths to be good citizens and
to develop in them clean bodies and
minds. He plans an extensive athle-
tic and recreational program for the
members of the Y, including volley-
ball, tennis, American football, base-
|ball, and indoor games such as table
|tennis, checkers and chess. A num-
ber of hobby clubs will be formed,
and one of them, the Stamp Club, is
already meeting.
| The temporary building will house
|all of the YMCA activities until a
new and modern building will be
|erected. A drive to collect funds for
this purpose is under way.
| To be included in the YMCA pro-
| gram are all boys from six years old
up. The various age groups will have
activities suited to their abilities
in both the sports and clubs. Boys
clubs, for members up to 21, are also
being considered.
| R. P. Steele is the YMCA president.
Other officers include H. M. F
secretary; J. M. Shaver, treasurer;
Gottfried Eman, first vice president;
Manual Viana, second vice president
| Serving on the Executive Commit-
tee, in addition to the officers, are
J. J. P. Oduber and W. J. Dinissen,

Stanvac To Build
New Refinery |
In Philippines

Standard-Vacuum Oil Company
has announced plans to build
25,000-barrel refinery in the Bataan
Peninsula in Luzon, in the
Philippines. Costing in the neighbor-
hood of 33 million dollars, the plant
will be the largest private investment
project in the islands.

Construction will
and the refinery’s
scheduled for 1961. Products will be
aviation turbo fuel, motor gasoline,
|illuminating kerosene, diesel fuels
and fuel oils.

Site of the plant is a 500-acre tract
the east coast of the peninsula,
overlooking Manila Bay.

The Philippines Republic, a grow-
jing is one of Asia’s major
|markets for petroleum products, and
|most of the refinery’s output will be
consumed in the islands. Last year
demand for these products was esti-
mated at 43,000 barrels a day.

Stanvac owns wholly or partially
six other refineries, including two in
Japan and others in Indonesia, Aus-
|tralia, India and South Africa.

Jersey pushed Lagos markets literally
the most spectacular sight he saw
was a variety of cactus in Arizona 52 years old world wide The variety of products
which reached a height of 60 feet shipped increased sharply
When this started Mr Griffin was
an operator
In the middle 1930s expansion
continued and by 1937 Mr Griffin
as general foreman of cracking fol
lowed by the same position in LOF
was a part of it As Lago became a
world supplier and contributed its
enormous bit to the Allied war effort
Mr Griffin progressed in the
organization In June 1945 he was
division superintendent and a year
later was made process superintendent
During the Korean conflict he
ssrved as general superintendent
and in 1955 was promot d to general
manager He became executive vice
president in April 1957
Two aspects of his career with
Lago have given Mr Griffin his
greatest satisfactions One is having
participated in training employees
