Aruba and Lago Fight Polio

Sport Park Crowd
Thrilled by Antics
Of Globetrotters

Close to 2000 people jammed
the basketball area of the Lago
Sport Park Oct. 27 to witness one
of the best shows to come to
Aruba in many years. The gather-
ed clientele sat awed one mo-
ment, amazed the next; were |
pleasantly thrilled and amused by
the world-famous Harlem Globe-
trot s and a supporting vaudeville
troupe

For many of the audience the
question of which was better, the
flashy brand of comic basketball ex-
hibited by the Trotters ore the in-
tricate and almost unbelievable acts
of the vaudevillians, was left un-

Who’s to Blame?

Crashes on Aruba Roads
Take Thirteen Lives

Thirteen dead. Who's to blame?

Thirteen people have been killed on Aruba’s roads this year. Some
were young people, some middle-aged, some old, but all were killed in
automobile accidents. Gruesome? yes, quite. Those killed are now part
of statistics that put Aruba’s road fatalities far ahead of any other
year. In fact, should the present rate of highway manslaughter con-
tinue, the number killed will be twice as great as any previous year. |
In 1955 cight were killed, in 1956 seven; thirteen have already been |
killed in the first nine months of 1957.

|
Thirteen dead. Who's to blame?
|

Aruba is an island, and a relatively small one. It measures but 60
square miles. Spider-webbed across this island are some 100 miles of
asvhalt roads and 90 miles of gravel roads. Known facts, quite true. |

But these facts bring to light two very important considerations: |
(1) We have only ourselves to blame; drivers on Aruba’s roads do |
not "drive over’ from another country or area. Holders of valid Aruba |
drivers licenses are the only car operators. (2) Where are we racing |
to? There are no vast distances to cover, no six- and eight-lane super
highways that are built for 150-kilometer speeds; the island is too
small. No place in Aruba cannot be reached within an hour of relaxed,
controlled, law-
abiding driving,
still

Thirteen dead.
Who's to blame?

|
|

The answer
becomes appa-
rent. Everyone
on this island
who drives a car
is to blame.
Everyone who
scoffs at speed
limits and races
recklessly from
one end of the
island to the

other is to blame.
Everyone who refuses to assist in making Aruba’s roads safer —
be it in supporting safe driving campaigns or easing up on the ac-
celerator — is to blame. The death rate is rising yet attempts to |
develop a safe driving campaign fail to gain support. In some quart- |

ers, the campaign failed to gain recognition. Seemingly there was |.

something more important than human lives. It’s hard to think of
what it might be.

Never-the-less thirteen people have died needlessly. They died be-
cause of careless, reckless acts. Attempts to remind drivers of these
acts that might possibly help save lives are rejected. And people |
continue to be killed.

Thirteen dead. Who’s to blame?

You and you and you and you, regardless of the station of island
life you have attained. It makes no difference. if you are indifferent
to attempts to correct poor driving habits on this island; if you as a
driver refuse to correct your own poor driving habits, you are to
blame. You must shoulder the disgrace of thirteen deaths on your
roads... especially since it was within your province to help prevent
hese deaths.

|

Let’s not allow the number to increase. It’s time for a show of
strength in support of safer driving in Aruba. It’s time for one |
whole-hearted support from everybody of the safe driving campaign
that has struggled valiantly against large odds to keep going. The
efforts of everyone are needed: government officials and enforcement
agencies, the island’s business men, organizations of many kinds, and
every last driver and pedestrian.

Thirteen dead. And we're all to blame.

that was the problem faced and
solved by Lago’s Medical Depart-
ment.

And that it was solved success-

fully is evidenced by the fact that
in two weeks thousands of children
from six months to 13 years re-
ceived the first of the three shots
necessary for imunity. (And no
sooner had the first shot been given
than the Medical Department had
to go through it all over again;
vaccination teams began administer-
ing the second shot Nov. 5.)

Preparations

The day before the program be-
gan, hospital employees swarmed
into the Sport Park Gymnasium
and in a few hours had transform-
ed it into a miniature clinic. Beds
had been set up in the improbable
case that anyone should suffer ill
effects; tables, chairs, desks, trays

would work as smoothly as possible.

Early the next morning, before
the doors were to open, clerks pre-
pared the numbered cards they were
to distribute, on which were listed
the names of children to receive
the shot.

As parents brought children in,
they were given their card and
moved to the next stop in the pro-
cedure. Two units with a doctor
and a nurse in each, examined every
child to make sure his health would

ill, or who had just recovered from
illness, had to postpone their shots
until later.

From there the children went to

the needles, handled deftly by nurses.

In many cases the needle was in the
arm and out again before the
youngsters knew it; some were

brave, some apprehensive and some
tearful (see pictures). Two nurses
handled the vaccinations. There was
very little reaction to the shots,

On the way out, each child was
handed a card which indicated the
date the second shot would be given.

This was the procedure followed
every day from 8 in the morning to

one in the afternoon. Later, after
the day’s activities at the Sport
Park, the hospital office force

brought back all the information

on the shots and recorded it in each
child’s permanent hospital record.

The first day of the first-shot
series saw 295 children take ad-

program. Saturday, Oct. 19 was the
busiest day of the two-week period,
when 707 children were inoculated.
The shots were administered by the
company free of charge.

Our artist has caught one of Santa’s reindeer
running through the woods before his round-the-

Santa’s. It could be any one of 50 different species,
many of which are found in the northern United

One thing about reindeer: when they walk they
make peculiar crackling noises that sound like

cracks his hooves the way some people crack

Our artist has caught one of Santas reindeer
running through the woods before his round-the-world
trip next month Or maybe it isnt one of
Santas It could be any one of 50 different species
many of which are found in the northern United
States and Canada
One thing about reindeer when they walk they
make peculiar crackling noises that sound like
electricity It comes not from the hooves on the
ground but from within the legs the reindeer
cracks his hooves the way some people crack
their knuckles
Nos artista a captura un di e rendiernan di Santa

Sport Park Crowd
Thrilled by Antics

Close to 2000 people jammed
the basketball area of the Lago
Sport Park Oct. 27 to witness one
of the best shows to come to
Aruba in many years. The gather-
ed clientele sat awed one mo-

pleasantly thrilled and amused by
the world-famous Harlem Globe-

troupe

For many of the audience the
question of which was better, the
flashy brand of comic basketball ex-
hibited by the Trotters ore the in-
tricate and almost unbelievable acts
of the vaudevillians, was left un-

Who’s to Blame?

Crashes on Aruba Roads
Take Thirteen Lives

Thirteen dead. Who's to blame?

Thirteen people have been killed on Aruba’s roads this year. Some
were young people, some middle-aged, some old, but all were killed in
automobile accidents. Gruesome? yes, quite. Those killed are now part
of statistics that put Aruba’s road fatalities far ahead of any other
year. In fact, should the present rate of highway manslaughter con-
tinue, the number killed will be twice as great as any previous year. |
In 1955 cight were killed, in 1956 seven; thirteen have already been |
killed in the first nine months of 1957.

|
Thirteen dead. Who's to blame?
|

Aruba is an island, and a relatively small one. It measures but 60
square miles. Spider-webbed across this island are some 100 miles of
asvhalt roads and 90 miles of gravel roads. Known facts, quite true. |

But these facts bring to light two very important considerations: |
(1) We have only ourselves to blame; drivers on Aruba’s roads do |
not "drive over’ from another country or area. Holders of valid Aruba |
drivers licenses are the only car operators. (2) Where are we racing |
to? There are no vast distances to cover, no six- and eight-lane super
highways that are built for 150-kilometer speeds; the island is too
small. No place in Aruba cannot be reached within an hour of relaxed,
controlled, law-
abiding driving,
still

Thirteen dead.
Who's to blame?

|
|

The answer
becomes appa-
rent. Everyone
on this island
who drives a car
is to blame.
Everyone who
scoffs at speed
limits and races
recklessly from
one end of the
island to the

other is to blame.
Everyone who refuses to assist in making Aruba’s roads safer —
be it in supporting safe driving campaigns or easing up on the ac-
celerator — is to blame. The death rate is rising yet attempts to |
develop a safe driving campaign fail to gain support. In some quart- |

ers, the campaign failed to gain recognition. Seemingly there was |.

something more important than human lives. It’s hard to think of
what it might be.

Never-the-less thirteen people have died needlessly. They died be-
cause of careless, reckless acts. Attempts to remind drivers of these
acts that might possibly help save lives are rejected. And people |
continue to be killed.

Thirteen dead. Who’s to blame?

You and you and you and you, regardless of the station of island
life you have attained. It makes no difference. if you are indifferent
to attempts to correct poor driving habits on this island; if you as a
driver refuse to correct your own poor driving habits, you are to
blame. You must shoulder the disgrace of thirteen deaths on your
roads... especially since it was within your province to help prevent
hese deaths.

|

Let’s not allow the number to increase. It’s time for a show of
strength in support of safer driving in Aruba. It’s time for one |
whole-hearted support from everybody of the safe driving campaign
that has struggled valiantly against large odds to keep going. The
efforts of everyone are needed: government officials and enforcement
agencies, the island’s business men, organizations of many kinds, and
every last driver and pedestrian.

Thirteen dead. And we're all to blame.

that was the problem faced and
solved by Lago’s Medical Depart-
ment.

And that it was solved success-

fully is evidenced by the fact that
in two weeks thousands of children
from six months to 13 years re-
ceived the first of the three shots
necessary for imunity. (And no
sooner had the first shot been given
than the Medical Department had
to go through it all over again;
vaccination teams began administer-
ing the second shot Nov. 5.)

Preparations

The day before the program be-
gan, hospital employees swarmed
into the Sport Park Gymnasium
and in a few hours had transform-
ed it into a miniature clinic. Beds
had been set up in the improbable
case that anyone should suffer ill
effects; tables, chairs, desks, trays

would work as smoothly as possible.

Early the next morning, before
the doors were to open, clerks pre-
pared the numbered cards they were
to distribute, on which were listed
the names of children to receive
the shot.

As parents brought children in,
they were given their card and
moved to the next stop in the pro-
cedure. Two units with a doctor
and a nurse in each, examined every
child to make sure his health would

ill, or who had just recovered from
illness, had to postpone their shots
until later.

From there the children went to

the needles, handled deftly by nurses.

In many cases the needle was in the
arm and out again before the
youngsters knew it; some were

brave, some apprehensive and some
tearful (see pictures). Two nurses
handled the vaccinations. There was
very little reaction to the shots,

On the way out, each child was
handed a card which indicated the
date the second shot would be given.

This was the procedure followed
every day from 8 in the morning to

one in the afternoon. Later, after
the day’s activities at the Sport
Park, the hospital office force

brought back all the information

on the shots and recorded it in each
child’s permanent hospital record.

The first day of the first-shot
series saw 295 children take ad-

program. Saturday, Oct. 19 was the
busiest day of the two-week period,
when 707 children were inoculated.
The shots were administered by the
company free of charge.

Our artist has caught one of Santa’s reindeer
running through the woods before his round-the-

many of which are found in the northern United

One thing about reindeer: when they walk they
make peculiar crackling noises that sound like

cracks his hooves the way some people crack
