104,500-Ton Supertankers

Construction of five new tankers, each 104,500 deadweight tons,

has been ordered by D. K. Ludwig,
believed to be the largest single p

the U. S. shipping magnate. It is
rivate shipbuilding order ever re-

ported, exceeded only by government contracts during the war.
The five supertankers will be built in the former naval shipyard in

Kure, Japan, the same yard where
Ludwig has built other tankers. It
is under lease to his company, Na-
tional Bulk Carriers, Inc

Work will begin on the first of
the hug? new ships around June 1,
1958, aid a company official said it
will definitely be finished the same
year. It is expected that this ship
will be in service before the 106,000-
tonner now under construction in
Quincy, Massachusetts for A. S.
Onasis, Ludwig’s rival in the inter-
national shipping world.

Eight 109,000 Tonners

Ludwig’s

new order brings to

eight the number of ships either
planned or being built which will
d 100,000 deadweight tons

Onasis is building two, and Stavros
Niarchos the other.

At the present time the biggest |
tanker in service is Ludwig’s "Uni-
verse Leader,” an 85,000-ton vessel. |

Few details of the new ships were
released, but it was understood that |
they would measure some 900 feet
in length and have beams of 135

|
feet. Three ships—’Queen Eliza- |
beth,” "Queen Mary” and "United
States’—are longer, but not nearly |
as broad as the tankers. No sec |
mation was available of the draft
of the ships.

Neither was there word of the
cost involved. Based on reports that
tanker-building c in Japanese
yards are about per dead-

weight ton, the cost of each tanker
would be in the neighborhood of
$25 million.

No date was given for the com-

pletion of all five ships, because
construction of "smaller”’ ships—
45,000 and 85,000 tonners—will be

built along with them, also in the

Kure yards. Ludwig’s lease expires
in 1966, with an option for renewal
to 1971

One of Ludwig’s ships, the 38,000-
ton "Petrokure”’, called at Lago in
December, 1954 with a 240,000-bar-
rel cargo of crude. She was 673 feet
long and had a beam of 92 feet,

|and attracted wide comment here. !

After the first shot has been ad-

Medical Department officials
emphasize that no vaccination can
be given without the hospitalization
identification card.

The inoculation program by Lago
is being carried out in conjunction
with a similar campaign by the
Aruba Public Health Department.
Employees’ children eligible for
inoculation who live in areas where
transportation to the Sport Park
Vaccination Center may be diffi-
cult, may receive their shots from
the Aruba Public Health Depart-
ment teams visiting in those areas.

The Medical Department stresses
that children suffering from an
acute illness or just recovering
from one, or who have a fever will
not be vaccinated at the time. After
complete recovery, these children
|can start their series of shots.

EIG Celebrates 25th
Anniversary This Month

Lago’s Equipment Inspection Group, now an indispensable part of

refinery operations, celebrates its

It was on that day in 1932 that P. A. O’Brien was named chief
equipment inspector, and three more men, J. C. Souder, M. G. Ste-
vens and J. D. Millender, comprised the department. Their first office

was in the small room in the old
engineering building.

Establishment of the group short-
ly after the refinery was acquired
by Standard Oil Co. (N.J-) in 1932
followed what was normal Jersey
Standard practice. A growing re-
finery like Lago in 1932 was con-
stantly adding new equipment, and
its proper functioning and efficien-
cy was dependent on an inspection
group.

Mr. Souder succeeded Mr. O’Brien
as chief of the group in February,
1936, and Mr. Millender in January,
1938, followed Mr. Souder. Of these
four, Mr. O’Brien is retired, Mr.
Souder is now with Esso Engineer-
ing, Mr. Stephens is with Creole in
Caracas, and Mr. Millender was
killed in the Texas City disaster a
few years ago.

18 Men

By September, 1942, when W. B.
Cundiff became chief equipment
inspector, the group had expanded
to 18 men. The office was in the
building now used as the Safety
Field Center, after having worked
out of a number of offices and
headquarters.

As the refinery grew, so did the
EIG, which found itself with more
and more to do. In the six-and-a-
half years that covered most of the
war and the immediate postwar pe-
riod, the department literally burst
its seams. It grew from 18 employ-
ees in 1942 to 45 in March, 1949,
when L. R. Seekins became chief.
Halfway through that period, the
group moved again, this time to the
old Marine Office, on the site of the

present air foam garage. Present
quarters west of the Dining Hall
were occupied in 1951.

It is fitting that Mr. Seekins, as
chief, has the most EIG service of
any of the present group. He join-
ed in April, 1938. The second old-
est employée in point of EIG ser-
vice still in the group is Abdul Ka-
dim, who started work as a clerk
in November 1939.

Of American Baseball Goes Back
Century Child’s Game of England

| In the year 1907, there were firmly established two major baseball

| leagues. That year Detroit, winning 92 ball games, and Chicago win- |

ning 107, met in the World Series. The Cubs swept it in four games.

That year, too, a seven-man commission was named to settle once
and for all the origin of the noble game of baseball. The group was
appointed by A. G. Spalding, a
pioneer player and at the time head
of the Spalding sporting goods firm,
and consisted of other sporting fig-
| ures, and dignity was supplied by |
a U. S. Senator. There had been in-
timations that baseball was but a
refinement of an old English game
for boys called "'rounders.”

The commission, whose research
| was more patriotic than scholarly,
| published its findings in the Base-
ball Guide of 1908, and said cate-
gorically that baseball was a com-
pletely native-born American game,
unsullied by influences from over
| the sea, and that the rules for play-
| ing the game, and the layout of the
field were devised in 1939 by Abner
Doubleday, sometime general in the
| Union Army.

Proof

But the document that blew the
Spalding Commission into a cocked
hat was a book called '’The Boy’s
Own Book," published in London in
1828. According to it, the game

ACTION PILES up around the goal as two attackers
send the puck flying in. It’s the goalie’s job—facing
out—to knock the puck down.

Iee Hockey Is Rough, Fast Game

One of the most popular winter sports, both amateur and profes-
sional, in the northern United States and Canada is ice hockey. It’s a
game that calls for a variety of skills—speed on skates, agility, quick
reflexes, endurance, and ability to handle a cumbersome stick while

skating at full speed.

Ice hockey is an outgrowth of
the field hockey which developed
in Europe centuries ago, and is still
immensely popular there, and to a
lesser extent in the United States.

But it is the swift, flashing game
on ice that attracts so much inte-
rest and participation. In some
places indoor ice rinks make it pos-
sible for players to practice all year
long, and in certain parts of Cana-
da and northern United States, win-
ter comes early and stays late.

The game is a simple one essen-
tially. There are six men on a side,
each equipped with long-handled
stick that has a wide blade at the
end. With these sticks they can
push the puck along the ice. The
puck is a flat hard rubber disk
which, propelled by a skilled prac-
titioner, can travel up to 90 miles
per hour. At each end of the play-
ing area is a goal, as on a football
field, that is six feet long and four
feet wide. To the goalie defending
it, the opening seems to be as big
as a cave; to the attacking team
that hopes to slam the puck through
the goal, it looks as big as a match-
box. The goalie never leaves his post.
He stays there to knock aside the
puck whirling at him from all sides,
using his padded legs and chest,
his gloved hands, his skates, his
stick and occasionally, his face.
Like everybody on a_ professional
hockey team, a goalie has to be
good. With the puck flashing around
him at incredible speeds, he has
to keep his eyes on it and the
enemy players all at once.

Ice hockey is regarded by many
as the most violent of all contact
sports. With the rink filled with
speeding, burly bodies the chances
of collision are great. Legally, de-
fensive players can block their op-
ponents with their bodies, and can
also tangle sticks. In the heat of
play tempers often flare up, and it
is a rare professional hockey game

Solution

tions of the rules, players are

Like every sport, success in

There’s no place on a hockey team,
a football team, a baseball team or

wants to do it all himself. That’s
the secret of sports.

Legend Tells
Of Ancient City

Once upon a time, there were
some Indians who spent their
time hunting and fishing in the
mountains, Finally, they tired of
wandering about and asked the
Great Spirit to give them a perma-
nent home. He listened to their plea
and said, "Follow the eagle until
a feather falls. That spot shall be
your home for all time.’

The Indians and their chief de-
cided to follow the Great Spirit's
advice, One day, they saw a huge
eagle sailing around in the sky.
They watched it very closely; some
of the Indians followed it for se-
veral days. At last, one of its
feathers fell to the ground on the
bank of a river.

The Indians were very happy un-
til someone saw another feather
fall from the eagle’s wing! This one

fell on the opposite bank of the
same stream.

Then the Indians didn’t know
what to do. They discussed their

problem around the camp fire for
a long time. Some wanted to build
the pueblo or village on the left
bank; others thought it should
stand where the first feather had
fallen. Finally, they decided to
build two villages, and in a short
time they were living on both sides
of the river.

Miss Bernice Philips, who left
Aruba recently to study education
on a Lago Scholarship Foundation
grant, reports in a letter to the
Foundation that "everything is
in Holland, and that her
studies have begun.

Miss Phillips, student at the
R. K. Kweekschool in Reuver, Hol-

In her letter she expressed her
appreciation to the Foundation for

its help in these words: "Once
more Lago is proving its interest

She also mentioned that she had
already visited a number of diffe-
rent places in Holland, which, she
wrote, "is a nice country.”

Construccion di cinco tanquero

K. Ludwig, e magnate Americano
di baper. Posiblemente esaki ta e
encargo mas grandi di tur tempo

E cinco super-tanqueronan lo

Off -the- Job Accidents
Reach Shocking Total

A new and startling statistic |
compiled by Lago’s Medical De-
partment for the Off-The-Job Safety
Committee, points out graphically
the need for energetic and con- |
certed efforts to reduce the number |
of accidents occurring to employees |
once they leave the job.

The records show that from Jan. |
1 of this year through Sept. 30, six |
employees suffered disabling inju- |
ries on the job. In the same period,
the number of employees who were
injured off the job was 202. For all
of 1956, the figures were 14 dis-
abling accidents on the job and 375
off. |
The company’s off-the-job efforts |
are centered in a committee which
comprises employees from every
segment of Lago. Shortly after it
was organized General Manager F.
E. Griffin, in a letter sent to all
employees at their homes, asked
for company-wide support for the
committee in its safety campaign.
He said that safety experience
gained on the job ought to be car-
ried home by each employee and
put into practice there, on the is-
land's roads, and the athletic fields.
Employees were invited by Mr.
Griffin to turn in ideas and sug-
gestions to the Off-The-Job Safety
Study Group.

Those making up the Study
Group are currently working on a
number of projects designed to keep
the program going. G. N. Owen is
chairman, and members include Dr. |
R. F. Brace, E. J. Kulisek, E. B.

104,500-Ton Supertankers

Construction of five new tankers, each 104,500 deadweight tons,

has been ordered by D. K. Ludwig,
believed to be the largest single p

the U. S. shipping magnate. It is
rivate shipbuilding order ever re-

ported, exceeded only by government contracts during the war.
The five supertankers will be built in the former naval shipyard in

Kure, Japan, the same yard where
Ludwig has built other tankers. It
is under lease to his company, Na-
tional Bulk Carriers, Inc

Work will begin on the first of
the hug? new ships around June 1,
1958, aid a company official said it
will definitely be finished the same
year. It is expected that this ship
will be in service before the 106,000-
tonner now under construction in
Quincy, Massachusetts for A. S.
Onasis, Ludwig’s rival in the inter-
national shipping world.

Eight 109,000 Tonners

Ludwig’s

new order brings to

eight the number of ships either
planned or being built which will
d 100,000 deadweight tons

Onasis is building two, and Stavros
Niarchos the other.

At the present time the biggest |
tanker in service is Ludwig’s "Uni-
verse Leader,” an 85,000-ton vessel. |

Few details of the new ships were
released, but it was understood that |
they would measure some 900 feet
in length and have beams of 135

|
feet. Three ships—’Queen Eliza- |
beth,” "Queen Mary” and "United
States’—are longer, but not nearly |
as broad as the tankers. No sec |
mation was available of the draft
of the ships.

Neither was there word of the
cost involved. Based on reports that
tanker-building c in Japanese
yards are about per dead-

weight ton, the cost of each tanker
would be in the neighborhood of
$25 million.

No date was given for the com-

pletion of all five ships, because
construction of "smaller”’ ships—
45,000 and 85,000 tonners—will be

built along with them, also in the

Kure yards. Ludwig’s lease expires
in 1966, with an option for renewal
to 1971

One of Ludwig’s ships, the 38,000-
ton "Petrokure”’, called at Lago in
December, 1954 with a 240,000-bar-
rel cargo of crude. She was 673 feet
long and had a beam of 92 feet,

|and attracted wide comment here. !

in the series will be given at later
dates, the second coming three
weeks after the first, and the last
approximately seven months after
the second.

The only children to be inocula-
| ted at this time will be those be-
tween the ages of six months and
13 years. Children from 13 to 19 will

be vaccinated later.
Identification Needed
|
At the time of the first shot
children, or those bringing them,

must have in their possession hos-
pitalization identification cards.
After the first shot has been ad-
ministered, the child will be handed
a card indicating the dates to re-
turn for the second and third shots.

Medical Department officials
emphasize that no vaccination can
be given without the hospitalization
identification card.

The inoculation program by Lago
is being carried out in conjunction
with a similar campaign by the
Aruba Public Health Department.
Employees’ children eligible for
inoculation who live in areas where
transportation to the Sport Park
Vaccination Center may be diffi-
cult, may receive their shots from
the Aruba Public Health Depart-
ment teams visiting in those areas.

The Medical Department stresses
that children suffering from an
acute illness or just recovering
from one, or who have a fever will
not be vaccinated at the time. After
complete recovery, these children
|can start their series of shots.

EIG Celebrates 25th
Anniversary This Month

Lago’s Equipment Inspection Group, now an indispensable part of

refinery operations, celebrates its

It was on that day in 1932 that P. A. O’Brien was named chief
equipment inspector, and three more men, J. C. Souder, M. G. Ste-
vens and J. D. Millender, comprised the department. Their first office

was in the small room in the old
engineering building.

Establishment of the group short-
ly after the refinery was acquired
by Standard Oil Co. (N.J-) in 1932
followed what was normal Jersey
Standard practice. A growing re-
finery like Lago in 1932 was con-
stantly adding new equipment, and
its proper functioning and efficien-
cy was dependent on an inspection
group.

Mr. Souder succeeded Mr. O’Brien
as chief of the group in February,
1936, and Mr. Millender in January,
1938, followed Mr. Souder. Of these
four, Mr. O’Brien is retired, Mr.
Souder is now with Esso Engineer-
ing, Mr. Stephens is with Creole in
Caracas, and Mr. Millender was
killed in the Texas City disaster a
few years ago.

18 Men

By September, 1942, when W. B.
Cundiff became chief equipment
inspector, the group had expanded
to 18 men. The office was in the
building now used as the Safety
Field Center, after having worked
out of a number of offices and
headquarters.

As the refinery grew, so did the
EIG, which found itself with more
and more to do. In the six-and-a-
half years that covered most of the
war and the immediate postwar pe-
riod, the department literally burst
its seams. It grew from 18 employ-
ees in 1942 to 45 in March, 1949,
when L. R. Seekins became chief.
Halfway through that period, the
group moved again, this time to the
old Marine Office, on the site of the

present air foam garage. Present
quarters west of the Dining Hall
were occupied in 1951.

It is fitting that Mr. Seekins, as
chief, has the most EIG service of
any of the present group. He join-
ed in April, 1938. The second old-
est employée in point of EIG ser-
vice still in the group is Abdul Ka-
dim, who started work as a clerk
in November 1939.

Of American Baseball Goes Back
Century Child’s Game of England

| In the year 1907, there were firmly established two major baseball

| leagues. That year Detroit, winning 92 ball games, and Chicago win- |

ning 107, met in the World Series. The Cubs swept it in four games.

That year, too, a seven-man commission was named to settle once
and for all the origin of the noble game of baseball. The group was
appointed by A. G. Spalding, a
pioneer player and at the time head
of the Spalding sporting goods firm,
and consisted of other sporting fig-
| ures, and dignity was supplied by |
a U. S. Senator. There had been in-
timations that baseball was but a
refinement of an old English game
for boys called "'rounders.”

The commission, whose research
| was more patriotic than scholarly,
| published its findings in the Base-
ball Guide of 1908, and said cate-
gorically that baseball was a com-
pletely native-born American game,
unsullied by influences from over
| the sea, and that the rules for play-
| ing the game, and the layout of the
field were devised in 1939 by Abner
Doubleday, sometime general in the
| Union Army.

Proof

But the document that blew the
Spalding Commission into a cocked
hat was a book called '’The Boy’s

“Hand Soccer” Game is Easy

The newest version of

going on for generations, and pos-

that it is a very good game to play,
and in this case, a very easy game|
to manufacture

In its simplest terms, it is an
open plywood box, resting on a
table top. Wooden rods extend
ucr the box through holes in the
sides, with enough rod sticking on
each side to form a handle

Each rod has_ small wooden
paddles fastened to it. Players

tempt to manipulate the rods so
that the paddles will bat a _ ping-
pong ball towards its goal hole
at each end of the box. That’s the
basic idea of the me.

Players can twist, rotate or slide

the rods so that the paddles block

ACTION PILES up around the goal as two attackers
send the puck flying in. It’s the goalie’s job—facing
out—to knock the puck down.

Iee Hockey Is Rough, Fast Game

One of the most popular winter sports, both amateur and profes-
sional, in the northern United States and Canada is ice hockey. It’s a
game that calls for a variety of skills—speed on skates, agility, quick
reflexes, endurance, and ability to handle a cumbersome stick while

skating at full speed.

Ice hockey is an outgrowth of
the field hockey which developed
in Europe centuries ago, and is still
immensely popular there, and to a
lesser extent in the United States.

But it is the swift, flashing game
on ice that attracts so much inte-
rest and participation. In some
places indoor ice rinks make it pos-
sible for players to practice all year
long, and in certain parts of Cana-
da and northern United States, win-
ter comes early and stays late.

The game is a simple one essen-
tially. There are six men on a side,
each equipped with long-handled
stick that has a wide blade at the
end. With these sticks they can
push the puck along the ice. The
puck is a flat hard rubber disk
which, propelled by a skilled prac-
titioner, can travel up to 90 miles
per hour. At each end of the play-
ing area is a goal, as on a football
field, that is six feet long and four
feet wide. To the goalie defending
it, the opening seems to be as big
as a cave; to the attacking team
that hopes to slam the puck through
the goal, it looks as big as a match-
box. The goalie never leaves his post.
He stays there to knock aside the
puck whirling at him from all sides,
using his padded legs and chest,
his gloved hands, his skates, his
stick and occasionally, his face.
Like everybody on a_ professional
hockey team, a goalie has to be
good. With the puck flashing around
him at incredible speeds, he has
to keep his eyes on it and the
enemy players all at once.

Ice hockey is regarded by many
as the most violent of all contact
sports. With the rink filled with
speeding, burly bodies the chances
of collision are great. Legally, de-
fensive players can block their op-
ponents with their bodies, and can
also tangle sticks. In the heat of
play tempers often flare up, and it
is a rare professional hockey game

Solution

must get along without him as well
as it can, for he cannot be substi-

Like every sport, success in
hockey depends = on teamwork.
There’s no place on a hockey team,
a football team, a baseball team or
a basketball team for the man who
wants to do it all himself. That’s
the secret of sports.

Legend Tells
Of Ancient City

Once upon a time, there were
some Indians who spent their
time hunting and fishing in the
mountains, Finally, they tired of
wandering about and asked the
Great Spirit to give them a perma-
nent home. He listened to their plea
and said, "Follow the eagle until
a feather falls. That spot shall be
your home for all time.’

The Indians and their chief de-
cided to follow the Great Spirit's
advice, One day, they saw a huge
eagle sailing around in the sky.
They watched it very closely; some
of the Indians followed it for se-
veral days. At last, one of its
feathers fell to the ground on the
bank of a river.

The Indians were very happy un-
til someone saw another feather
fall from the eagle’s wing! This one

fell on the opposite bank of the
same stream.

Then the Indians didn’t know
what to do. They discussed their

problem around the camp fire for
a long time. Some wanted to build
the pueblo or village on the left
bank; others thought it should
stand where the first feather had
fallen. Finally, they decided to
build two villages, and in a short
time they were living on both sides
of the river.

weight, a worde encarga door di D.
K. Ludwig, e magnate Americano
di baper. Posiblemente esaki ta e

Off -the- Job Accidents
Reach Shocking Total

A new and startling statistic |
compiled by Lago’s Medical De-
partment for the Off-The-Job Safety
Committee, points out graphically
the need for energetic and con- |
certed efforts to reduce the number |
of accidents occurring to employees |
once they leave the job.

The records show that from Jan. |
1 of this year through Sept. 30, six |
employees suffered disabling inju- |
ries on the job. In the same period,
the number of employees who were
injured off the job was 202. For all
of 1956, the figures were 14 dis-
abling accidents on the job and 375
off. |
The company’s off-the-job efforts |
are centered in a committee which
comprises employees from every
segment of Lago. Shortly after it
was organized General Manager F.
E. Griffin, in a letter sent to all
employees at their homes, asked
for company-wide support for the
committee in its safety campaign.
He said that safety experience
gained on the job ought to be car-
ried home by each employee and
put into practice there, on the is-
land's roads, and the athletic fields.
Employees were invited by Mr.
Griffin to turn in ideas and sug-
gestions to the Off-The-Job Safety
Study Group.

Those making up the Study
Group are currently working on a
number of projects designed to keep
the program going. G. N. Owen is
chairman, and members include Dr. |
R. F. Brace, E. J. Kulisek, E. B.
Fowler, H. M. Nassy, W. C. Mink,

Jr., F. H. Ritfeld, Mateo Reyes, W.
G. Spitzer, Abdul Syed, and C. B. |
Shapley, secretary.
