Aruba Students
Make Big Splash

Four Aruba boys on their way to
2 new school year in the United |
States were the subjects of a big |
feature story in the Newark (N.J.)
Sunday News a couple of weeks ago.

The boys, Kok Tai Wong, Angel |
Britten, Casper Boekhoudt and Sixto |
Feliciano, were interviewed and pho- |
tographed by a News reporter. The |
first thing they worried about, ac- |
cording to the paper, was "How long
is it until winter?.” They were liv-
ing in Newark’s YMCA while they
did some shopping for warm clothes
in Bamberger’s department
(Casper and Sixto hold Aruba Scho- |
larship Foundation Grants, and will |
study at Pennington School in New
Jersey. Kok and Angel, who won
Lago Scholarship Foundation |
awards, will study at Marianapolis |
Preparatory School in Connecticut.)

Escalators
In the course of their shopping
tour, they were fascinated by the

escalators, and they were perhaps
slightly disappointed that no one |
worried about getting caught at the |
top. They were the store’s guests |
for lunch in the cafeteria.

According to the newspaper ac-
count all four were impressed with |
a number of things: so many cars,
the Passaic River, the heights of the |
building, the lights of New York |
seen dimly through the river mist,
girls in shorts, and of course, the
throngs of people. "Oh, where,” ask-
ed one, "do all the people
from?”

The boys are part of the total of
28 young men and women who this
year were awarded study grants by

come

the Lago Scholarship Foundation.
Their studies will be done in pre- |
paratory schools and colleges in |

Holland and the United States. |

The first steps in a massive pro-
gram to vaccinate all children of
and regular employees with
Salk anti-poliomyletis vaccine will
begin this month. Affected will be
children from six months to 13
years of age. Children from 13 to 19
will be vaccinated at a later date.

The shots will be administered
from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym-
nasium rcom of the Lago Sport
Park. Dates for the the mass inocu-
lation are Oct. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21,
22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 28. No shots
| will be administered on either Sun-
day, Oct. 20 or Sunday, Oct. 27.

The Lago Medical Department,
| giving the shots, has established the
Sport Park gymnasium as_ being
more convenient and accessible than
Lago Hospital. No shots will be
given at the Hospital.

Complete vaccination against po-
|liomyletis requires a series of three
shots, the second being given three
weeks after the first, and the final
one, approximately seven months
after the second. At the time of the
first shot each child will be given
a card with the return dates written
on it. Hospitalization identification
cards must be brought to the Sport
Park Vaccination Center by the
family of the child at the time of
each shot. Unless this card is avail-
able, no vaccination can be given.

The Medical Department stresses
that children suffering from an
jacute illness or just recovering
from one, or who have a fever will
not be vaccinated at the time. After
complete recovery, these children
can start their series of shots.

Employees’ children who are eli-
gible for the vaccinations, and who
|live in the Noord, Paradera and
| Santa Cruz areas where transporta-
|tion to the Sport Park Vaccination
Center may be difficult, may receive

their shots from the Aruba Public
Health Department
those areas.

CYIs Sometime
Need Clarification

There are times, says the CYI

office, when a ibmitted idea
doesn’t express clearly what the
suggester has in mind. To be
properly evaluated, however, the

office must go back to the sug-
gester for further information on
the idea

When this happens, the CYI
office urges cooperation on the
part of the man who turned in
the idea. The answer to a CYI
query may well mean the dif-
ference between an award and a
rejection.

The world beyond Aruba’s ho-
rizons had a strong pull on Miss
Emi Kuiperi. She wanted to know
what was over there, what the
people were like, what they did,
how they lived. And so, to find out,
she joined KLM, the Royal Dutch
Airlines, and if she hasn’t seen all
the world, she’s seen some of it,
and she likes what she has seen.

Miss Kuiperi, Aruba-born and
bred, is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Benny Kuiperi. Mr. Kuiperi is
executive secretary in the Aruba
Chamber of Commerce. In 1951 she
got her first taste of travel when
she went to a Girl Scout World
Camp in Portland, Oregon, as a
delegate from Aruba. A year ago,
working in Aruba’s Public Health
Department, the lure of faraway
places grew too attractive for Miss
Kuiperi, so she applied to KLM for
a stewardess position. In due time,
after interviews, tests and all the
usual processes pertaining to em-
ployment, Miss Kuiperi donned the
jaunty cap of KLM and began work
as a trainee stewardess, and start-
ed to see the world.

Certain Qualities

Miss Kuiperi, starting her three
week training assignment, offered
to her employer those very qualities
which airlines all over the world are
looking for in their personnel:
charm, poise, graciousness, a genuine
interest in other people, and adapt-
ability. Coupled with these at-
tributes, KLM added training in
child-care and first aid. Along with
her personality the new stewardess
brought a gift of languages: Eng-
lish, Dutch Spanish, Papiamento,
French, and a beginning in Italian,
which she is now learning. (Another
of her talents, unusable in air flight,
is a high degree of skill on the pia-
no and organ.)

Her normal route is Miami-Aru-
ba, although she has flown to Mexi-
co, and Caracas, and has also had
one flight to Lisbon. On a recent
trip to Florida, Miss Kuiperi was
acting as teacher in a situation she
was in herself not long ago as pu-
pil: training a new KLM _ hostess
Her trainee in this case was Miss
Petronelia Hartveld, Venezuela-
born Dutch girl, whom she taught
the ins and outs of the airborne
service that has made KLM travel
a world-wide watchword.

Hard Work

One of the first things that
Trainee Stewardess Hartveld learn-
ed from Stewardess Kuiperi is that
jobs like theirs call for more than
just a pretty smile. It’s a steady
job, and sometimes hard work. For
example, in one half-hour period,
Miss Kuiperi made 17 round trips

AN di sirbi comida semper ta cuidadosa-
e emblema di KLM ariba e tayénan, glas
y forki y cuchara semper mester ta cara pa e pasajero,

from the tail of the plane to the
front. These trips involve a multi-
tude of duties. Soon after becoming
airborne, Miss Kuiperi stood at the
front of the cabin and told the pas-
sengers where life jackets were
stored and how they were to be
worn. This instruction is required
by law on all over-water flights.

In another forward journey Miss
Kuiperi and Miss Hartveld served
mints, candies, gum and cigarettes
to their passengers shortly after
takeoff. Since they will be all to-
gether for several hours, the ste-
wardess takes this opportunity,
along with the trainee and the ste-
ward, to greet the passengers indi-
vidually and to establish the perso-
nal contact that is so much a part
of KLM service.

Meals Are Busy

Meal time is a complex period,
and has two aspects: preparing and
serving. On a normal KLM flight

there is a steward as well as a ste-
wardess, and these two take turns
at meal time. At lunch, one will pre-
pare and the other serve, and at the
next meal, they switch over. The
meals are prepared by a _ caterer,
loaded aboard and kept hot in spe-
cial steam tables. Placement of
dishes, cutlery, napkins and pack-
ets of sugar on the trays has been
developed to a fairly precise art by
KLM. The KLM emblem on each
item must be facing the passenger.
It takes nimble hands to arrange
all this, and that it gets done at
all in such cramped quarters is noth-
ing short of amazing.

There’s almost as much to do on
the ground as in the air. At shops
where food is put aboard, it is Miss
Kuiperi who signs for it, and sees
to any other arrangements to be
made for the passengers. The ste-
ward and stewardess always board
the plane first in order to check over
supplies, store refreshments and
greet passengers as they file aboard

Shopping Advantages

Miss Kuiperi finds in her job a
number of satisfactions. She travels,
does stimulating work, meets and
makes friends. With KLM’s new
schedules going into effect she will
have even broader opportunities to
see more of the world: Haiti and the
Dominican Republic. Therein lies an-

MAKING ONE of her infrequent trips to the plane’s nose

other major satisfaction for Miss
Kuiperi in her job, and it’s an im-
portant one for any girl, and that’s
discovering new and exciting places
to shop. Of course there won’t be
much time for browsing during brief
stops, but there will be enough. Of-
ten her stops in Miami coincide with
the late shopping hours of some of
the biggest stores there. These
things are good, but most of all Miss
Kuiperi likes first the people she
meets aboard the plane and in va-
rious countries and islands, and se-
condly, she likes the places. That all
adds up to liking her job, what she
can put into it and what she can
get out of it.

She takes the view that the fu-
ture belongs to youth, but that the
future doesn’t seek anyone. The fu-
ture will belong to those who go
looking for it. Poised, gracious and
charming, Miss Emi Kuiperi is a
splendid example of one youth who
wasn’t afraid to start the search.

On hand to address brief remarks to the group were General Man-

ager W. A. Murray, and Island Dey

in whose clubhouse the dance was
held, and Raymundo Farro, the
member of the class who provided
much of the moving spirit for the
party. F. H. Ritfeld of the LEC,
also spoke.

Last year the Class of 1946 held
a similar reunion.

In his talk Mr. Murray mentioned
that he had gotten to know many
of the LVS graduates since his ar-
rival in Aruba, and knows that they
are doing well. "I am looking to you
to keep on doing well,” he added,
and congratulated the committee
on its initiative and success.

Welcoming the guests, Mr. Far-
ro, remarked that this represented
the first opportunity since gradua-
tion for many of the class members

that the class of '47 was demon-

strating maturity under responsibi-

active and leading parts in their
community affairs.

Lago Training Program

Candelario Thiel, an Aruban youth
currently halfway through a four
year program of study in Hogere
Technical School in The Hague, is
gaining practical experience to go
with his classroom studies in a spe-
cial training program.

Starting last month Mr. Thiel em-
barked on a 13-week schedule which
will see him work in the machinist
craft, zone coordination and plan-
ning and engineering. He also spent
some time at the start of the pro-
gram learning Lago’s safety prin-
ciples.

Mr. Thiel is studying mechanical
engineering in Holland, and has
completed the first two years of a
four-year course. HTS students are
required to spend their third year,
called a "practice year’, in various

industries to supplement academic
training by actual job experience.
The school recommends the length
of time, the craft and the general
type of work, and leaves to the stu-
dent to choose the specific training.
Mr. Thiel elected to acquire his prac-
tical experience in overhaul, repair
and installation of pumps, compres-
sors and turbines, which will take
up nearly 10 weeks of his team. For
the remainder he will work with ma-
terial inspection and testing.

Three other Aruba boys have taken
similar training at Lago while stu-
dying at HTS. H. R. Robles and E.
S. Bartels undertook their program

"the closest approach to making this country free of dependence

The fruit of three years of work by Esso Research and the Penn-

sylvania Tire Company, the tires
should result in vast savings in the
country’s defense program. In ad-
dition, the new butyl tires will not
deteriorate in storage, will strongly
resist shipping in the tread area,
and have greater air-holding pro- |
perties than conventional tires.
Gruelling tests by the developers
of the tire and by the Army indi-
cate that the new butyl tires will
have a high performance standard.

Currently the only size in use is |
9.00 x 20, the most widely used type |
in the Army, but industry and Army |
have been encouraged to
work on even larger sizes, some of
which are now being made of 100%
per cent natural rubber.

Two Esso Research scientists, Dr.
William J. Sparks, and Robert M
| Thomas invented butyl in 1937, and
since then it has become the raw
material for numerous products. It
is used, for example, in automobile
inner tubes, garden hose, tractor
tires, flexible seals for car windows
and various insulating items. The }
ingredients are oil refinery
products known as isobutylene and
isoprene. It is made at 150 degrees
below zero (Fahrenheit) by a high
speed process.

Aruba Students
Make Big Splash

Four Aruba boys on their way to
2 new school year in the United |
States were the subjects of a big |
feature story in the Newark (N.J.)
Sunday News a couple of weeks ago.

The boys, Kok Tai Wong, Angel |
Britten, Casper Boekhoudt and Sixto |
Feliciano, were interviewed and pho- |
tographed by a News reporter. The |
first thing they worried about, ac- |
cording to the paper, was "How long
is it until winter?.” They were liv-
ing in Newark’s YMCA while they
did some shopping for warm clothes
in Bamberger’s department
(Casper and Sixto hold Aruba Scho- |
larship Foundation Grants, and will |
study at Pennington School in New
Jersey. Kok and Angel, who won
Lago Scholarship Foundation |
awards, will study at Marianapolis |
Preparatory School in Connecticut.)

Escalators
In the course of their shopping
tour, they were fascinated by the

escalators, and they were perhaps
slightly disappointed that no one |
worried about getting caught at the |
top. They were the store’s guests |
for lunch in the cafeteria.

According to the newspaper ac-
count all four were impressed with |
a number of things: so many cars,
the Passaic River, the heights of the |
building, the lights of New York |
seen dimly through the river mist,
girls in shorts, and of course, the
throngs of people. "Oh, where,” ask-
ed one, "do all the people
from?”

The boys are part of the total of
28 young men and women who this
year were awarded study grants by

come

the Lago Scholarship Foundation.
Their studies will be done in pre- |
paratory schools and colleges in |

Holland and the United States. |

The first steps in a massive pro-
gram to vaccinate all children of
and regular employees with
Salk anti-poliomyletis vaccine will
begin this month. Affected will be
children from six months to 13
years of age. Children from 13 to 19
will be vaccinated at a later date.

The shots will be administered
from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gym-
nasium rcom of the Lago Sport
Park. Dates for the the mass inocu-
lation are Oct. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21,
22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 28. No shots
| will be administered on either Sun-
day, Oct. 20 or Sunday, Oct. 27.

The Lago Medical Department,
| giving the shots, has established the
Sport Park gymnasium as_ being
more convenient and accessible than
Lago Hospital. No shots will be
given at the Hospital.

Complete vaccination against po-
|liomyletis requires a series of three
shots, the second being given three
weeks after the first, and the final
one, approximately seven months
after the second. At the time of the
first shot each child will be given
a card with the return dates written
on it. Hospitalization identification
cards must be brought to the Sport
Park Vaccination Center by the
family of the child at the time of
each shot. Unless this card is avail-
able, no vaccination can be given.

The Medical Department stresses
that children suffering from an
jacute illness or just recovering
from one, or who have a fever will
not be vaccinated at the time. After
complete recovery, these children
can start their series of shots.

Employees’ children who are eli-
gible for the vaccinations, and who
|live in the Noord, Paradera and
| Santa Cruz areas where transporta-
|tion to the Sport Park Vaccination
Center may be difficult, may receive

their shots from the Aruba Public
Health Department
those areas.

CYIs Sometime
Need Clarification

There are times, says the CYI

office, when a ibmitted idea
doesn’t express clearly what the
suggester has in mind. To be
properly evaluated, however, the

office must go back to the sug-
gester for further information on
the idea

When this happens, the CYI
office urges cooperation on the
part of the man who turned in
the idea. The answer to a CYI
query may well mean the dif-
ference between an award and a
rejection.

The world beyond Aruba’s ho-
rizons had a strong pull on Miss
Emi Kuiperi. She wanted to know
what was over there, what the
people were like, what they did,
how they lived. And so, to find out,
she joined KLM, the Royal Dutch
Airlines, and if she hasn’t seen all
the world, she’s seen some of it,
and she likes what she has seen.

Miss Kuiperi, Aruba-born and
bred, is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Benny Kuiperi. Mr. Kuiperi is
executive secretary in the Aruba
Chamber of Commerce. In 1951 she
got her first taste of travel when
she went to a Girl Scout World
Camp in Portland, Oregon, as a
delegate from Aruba. A year ago,
working in Aruba’s Public Health
Department, the lure of faraway
places grew too attractive for Miss
Kuiperi, so she applied to KLM for
a stewardess position. In due time,
after interviews, tests and all the
usual processes pertaining to em-
ployment, Miss Kuiperi donned the
jaunty cap of KLM and began work
as a trainee stewardess, and start-
ed to see the world.

Certain Qualities

Miss Kuiperi, starting her three
week training assignment, offered
to her employer those very qualities
which airlines all over the world are
looking for in their personnel:
charm, poise, graciousness, a genuine
interest in other people, and adapt-
ability. Coupled with these at-
tributes, KLM added training in
child-care and first aid. Along with
her personality the new stewardess
brought a gift of languages: Eng-
lish, Dutch Spanish, Papiamento,
French, and a beginning in Italian,
which she is now learning. (Another
of her talents, unusable in air flight,
is a high degree of skill on the pia-
no and organ.)

Her normal route is Miami-Aru-
ba, although she has flown to Mexi-
co, and Caracas, and has also had
one flight to Lisbon. On a recent
trip to Florida, Miss Kuiperi was
acting as teacher in a situation she
was in herself not long ago as pu-
pil: training a new KLM _ hostess
Her trainee in this case was Miss
Petronelia Hartveld, Venezuela-
born Dutch girl, whom she taught
the ins and outs of the airborne
service that has made KLM travel
a world-wide watchword.

Hard Work

One of the first things that
Trainee Stewardess Hartveld learn-
ed from Stewardess Kuiperi is that
jobs like theirs call for more than
just a pretty smile. It’s a steady
job, and sometimes hard work. For
example, in one half-hour period,
Miss Kuiperi made 17 round trips

AN di sirbi comida semper ta cuidadosa-
e emblema di KLM ariba e tayénan, glas
y forki y cuchara semper mester ta cara pa e pasajero,

from the tail of the plane to the
front. These trips involve a multi-
tude of duties. Soon after becoming
airborne, Miss Kuiperi stood at the
front of the cabin and told the pas-
sengers where life jackets were
stored and how they were to be
worn. This instruction is required
by law on all over-water flights.

In another forward journey Miss
Kuiperi and Miss Hartveld served
mints, candies, gum and cigarettes
to their passengers shortly after
takeoff. Since they will be all to-
gether for several hours, the ste-
wardess takes this opportunity,
along with the trainee and the ste-
ward, to greet the passengers indi-
vidually and to establish the perso-
nal contact that is so much a part
of KLM service.

Meals Are Busy

Meal time is a complex period,
and has two aspects: preparing and
serving. On a normal KLM flight

there is a steward as well as a ste-
wardess, and these two take turns
at meal time. At lunch, one will pre-
pare and the other serve, and at the
next meal, they switch over. The
meals are prepared by a _ caterer,
loaded aboard and kept hot in spe-
cial steam tables. Placement of
dishes, cutlery, napkins and pack-
ets of sugar on the trays has been
developed to a fairly precise art by
KLM. The KLM emblem on each
item must be facing the passenger.
It takes nimble hands to arrange
all this, and that it gets done at
all in such cramped quarters is noth-
ing short of amazing.

There’s almost as much to do on
the ground as in the air. At shops
where food is put aboard, it is Miss
Kuiperi who signs for it, and sees
to any other arrangements to be
made for the passengers. The ste-
ward and stewardess always board
the plane first in order to check over
supplies, store refreshments and
greet passengers as they file aboard

Shopping Advantages

Miss Kuiperi finds in her job a
number of satisfactions. She travels,
does stimulating work, meets and
makes friends. With KLM’s new
schedules going into effect she will
have even broader opportunities to
see more of the world: Haiti and the
Dominican Republic. Therein lies an-

MAKING ONE of her infrequent trips to the plane’s nose

other major satisfaction for Miss
Kuiperi in her job, and it’s an im-
portant one for any girl, and that’s
discovering new and exciting places
to shop. Of course there won’t be
much time for browsing during brief
stops, but there will be enough. Of-
ten her stops in Miami coincide with
the late shopping hours of some of
the biggest stores there. These
things are good, but most of all Miss
Kuiperi likes first the people she
meets aboard the plane and in va-
rious countries and islands, and se-
condly, she likes the places. That all
adds up to liking her job, what she
can put into it and what she can
get out of it.

She takes the view that the fu-
ture belongs to youth, but that the
future doesn’t seek anyone. The fu-
ture will belong to those who go
looking for it. Poised, gracious and
charming, Miss Emi Kuiperi is a
splendid example of one youth who
wasn’t afraid to start the search.

in whose clubhouse the dance was
held, and Raymundo Farro, the
member of the class who provided
much of the moving spirit for the
party. F. H. Ritfeld of the LEC,
also spoke.

Last year the Class of 1946 held
a similar reunion.

In his talk Mr. Murray mentioned
that he had gotten to know many
of the LVS graduates since his ar-
rival in Aruba, and knows that they
are doing well. "I am looking to you
to keep on doing well,” he added,
and congratulated the committee
on its initiative and success.

Welcoming the guests, Mr. Far-
ro, remarked that this represented
the first opportunity since gradua-
tion for many of the class members

Lago Training Program

Candelario Thiel, an Aruban youth
currently halfway through a four
year program of study in Hogere
Technical School in The Hague, is
gaining practical experience to go
with his classroom studies in a spe-
cial training program.

Starting last month Mr. Thiel em-
barked on a 13-week schedule which
will see him work in the machinist
craft, zone coordination and plan-
ning and engineering. He also spent
some time at the start of the pro-
gram learning Lago’s safety prin-
ciples.

Mr. Thiel is studying mechanical
engineering in Holland, and has
completed the first two years of a
four-year course. HTS students are
required to spend their third year,
called a "practice year’, in various

industries to supplement academic
training by actual job experience.
The school recommends the length
of time, the craft and the general
type of work, and leaves to the stu-
dent to choose the specific training.
Mr. Thiel elected to acquire his prac-
tical experience in overhaul, repair
and installation of pumps, compres-
sors and turbines, which will take
up nearly 10 weeks of his team. For
the remainder he will work with ma-
terial inspection and testing.

Three other Aruba boys have taken
similar training at Lago while stu-
dying at HTS. H. R. Robles and E.
S. Bartels undertook their program

"the closest approach to making this country free of dependence

The fruit of three years of work by Esso Research and the Penn-

sylvania Tire Company, the tires
should result in vast savings in the
country’s defense program. In ad-
dition, the new butyl tires will not
deteriorate in storage, will strongly
resist shipping in the tread area,
and have greater air-holding pro- |
perties than conventional tires.
Gruelling tests by the developers
of the tire and by the Army indi-
cate that the new butyl tires will
have a high performance standard.

Currently the only size in use is |
9.00 x 20, the most widely used type |
in the Army, but industry and Army |
have been encouraged to
work on even larger sizes, some of
which are now being made of 100%
per cent natural rubber.

Two Esso Research scientists, Dr.
William J. Sparks, and Robert M
| Thomas invented butyl in 1937, and
since then it has become the raw
material for numerous products. It
is used, for example, in automobile
inner tubes, garden hose, tractor
tires, flexible seals for car windows
and various insulating items. The }
ingredients are oil refinery
products known as isobutylene and
isoprene. It is made at 150 degrees
below zero (Fahrenheit) by a high
speed process.
