O’Brien Chosen
By International
First Aid Group

E. M. O’Brien of Lago’s Safety
Division has been named a state di-
rector of the International Rescue
and First Aid Association. His ap-
pointment was announced in a let-
ter last month from the Associa-
tion’s president, Don Dunnington.

There are pre-
sently in Aruba a
number of groups
concerned with
life saving and
first aid work. In
{accepting the post

ae

Mr. O’Brien said
that he hopes to
increase the pu-

blic awareness of
the importance
and need for first
aid work, and to
encourage membership in the Inter-
national Rescue and First Aid As-
sociation. One of the objectives of
the organization, he said, is to pro-
vide the opportunity to exchange
information on a world-wide basis
|among people interested in first aid
| work. Many helpful rescue and first
aid techniques are thus passed from
group to group.

In Aruba the Internationa] Res-
cue and First Aid Association might
provide a common meeting ground
for people who are members of their
national first aid groups - the Ame-
rican Red Cross, the British Red
Cross and the EHBO organization,
and thereby fill the need for a single
organization of which all could be
members.

Tratfic Safety Campaign

Keenly interested in safety throughout the world as well as the United
States, Ned H. Dearborn, National Safety Council president, recently be-
came aware of the extensive safe driving program being carried out in

Aruba. Knowing Aruba and many of its people; liking the island’s quiet |

disposition as much as he did, Mr. Dearborn was favorably impressed by

community’s
to accidents on

As a form of endorsement,
more important, to lend his perso-
nal encouragement, Mr. Dearborn
expressed his enthusiasm in a letter
to all the people of Aruba.

It reads:

"The account of Lago’s plan to
initiate a traffic accident preven-
tion program on the island of Aru-
ba in collaboration with other social
and business organizations is to be
highly commended. After my de-
lightful visit to your wonderful is-
land, I have a personal interest in
your program and_ consequently
would like to register my enthu-
siasm for the fine plans currently
being developed.

"The pain, the anguish, the mourn- |

ing caused by traffic accidents are
needless, yet they are with us
every minute of the hour, every hour
of the day. And, why? Why should
we cause ourselves such tragedy.
Oddly enough, we do it to ourselves.
Every time we accelerate our car
excessively, pass on curves, take

and,

chances, disregard laws, are
racing into tragedy.

"That’s why a program
}your Back the Attack on Traffic
Accidents is so important. It re-
minds us of our responsiblity to
ourselves, our families, our neigh-
bors and our community to drive
safely and obey the laws of the
road. When you and your friends
|see BTAOTA’s colorful stickers,
posters and signs, do as they sug-
gest: slow down, obey laws and
Back the Attack on Traffic Acci-
dents.

"I’m very enthusiastic about your
traffic safety program. Aruba
quickly became one of my favorite
islands after spending three enjoy-
| able days on your sunny shores. The
{thought of it becoming an island
where drivers are always safety
conscious is very encouraging to
me as a friend and as president of
the National Safety Council.

"You have my sincere best wish-
jes that your program is a complete
| success and that it will pay off in
fewer traffic accidents and
highway happiness.”

ARUBA’S XVII OLYMPIAD

Possibly the largest crowd ever }
to gather in Aruba, an estimated
10,000 persons, witnessed the 17th
Olympiad April 29 and by their
presence and enthusiasm, helped to
make it a memorable night.

From the first solemn parading
of the 136 athletes around the Sport
Park to the presentation to Enrique
Vorst, track and field star, the tro-
phy as "Outstanding Athlete’, the
Olympiad offered one exciting event
after another.

Ringing the fences and crowding
nearby rooftops the overflow crowd
saw Vorst win four events and run
up a total of 20 points for the out- |
standing athlete competition. He was
first in the 100, 220, running broad
jump and javelin events. Not too far
behind him was Irenus Krytoff with
15 points. He won the half-mile, mile

Weekend Seore
———

The weekend started as a peace- |
ful one. Serenity touched the is- |
land as only it can in the Carib- |
bean. The sun shone brightly; |
quiet and happiness prevailed.
Suddenly everything that was)
peaceful and gay was shattered
by a blaring horn, screeching
brakes, the high pitched sound of
gnashing steel. Then quiet again.
But only momentary. A child's
ery broke through the still and
was joined by a mother’s sob, a
father’s moan. Ambulance and po-
lice car sirens announced they
were coming. Pedestrians ran to
the scene: automobile accident.

This succession of events un-
fortunately signals the start of
just about every weekend on Aru-
ba’s highways. Aruba boasts over
100 miles of asphalt roads. These
same roads, however, are being |
used as the means through which |
speeders, law breakers, drunken |
drivers, hot rods and show offs
exercise their lack of regard for
their compatriots. Just take two
weekends ago.

It started as a quiet, normal
weekend. Shortly after seven in
the morning the first accident oc-
curred. It was followed that day
and the next by 11 others. Twist-

Lago Adds
To Island
Water Supply

Lago is again proving itself to
be a good neighbor and citizen.
Increased consumption of drink-
ing water and a consequent short-
age in the government supply has
resulted in Lago supplying 100

tons a day to the government to |

relieve the shortage.

Beginning April 11 the water was
pumped into the government lines
at a metered connection near the
Reception Center. The 100 tons re-
presents over 26,000 gallons.

It is anticipated that the arrange-
ment will continue until the new
water distillation plant at Balashi
goes into operation sometime next
year.

On a number of similar occasions
during the past years Lago has act-
ed as a friend of the community and
supplied drinking water in varying
amounts and for varying lengths of
time to augment government sup-
plies depleted by large consumption,
dry spells or mechanical failures.

Water supply on the island has
always been a major problem. Lago
now has two units which evaporate
sea water with a capacity of around
20,000 barrels a day. Of this all but
6500 barrels is used for various pur-
poses inside the concession, the re-
mainder being drinking water. Con-
sumption of drinking water at La-
go is approximately 5500 barrels a
day. Water for chemical use is still
brought to Lago by the shipload,
100,000 barrels at a time. Importing
of drinking water stopped in 1953.
A few years earlier Lago’s conden-
sation processes began to make it
more advantageous to produce its
own fresh water from the sea.

O’Brien Chosen
By International
First Aid Group

E. M. O’Brien of Lago’s Safety
Division has been named a state di-
rector of the International Rescue
and First Aid Association. His ap-
pointment was announced in a let-
ter last month from the Associa-
tion’s president, Don Dunnington.

There are pre-
sently in Aruba a
number of groups
concerned with
life saving and
first aid work. In
{accepting the post

ae

Mr. O’Brien said
that he hopes to
increase the pu-

blic awareness of
the importance
and need for first
aid work, and to
encourage membership in the Inter-
national Rescue and First Aid As-
sociation. One of the objectives of
the organization, he said, is to pro-
vide the opportunity to exchange
information on a world-wide basis
|among people interested in first aid
| work. Many helpful rescue and first
aid techniques are thus passed from
group to group.

In Aruba the Internationa] Res-
cue and First Aid Association might
provide a common meeting ground
for people who are members of their
national first aid groups - the Ame-
rican Red Cross, the British Red
Cross and the EHBO organization,
and thereby fill the need for a single
organization of which all could be
members.

Keenly interested in safety throughout the world as well as the United

community’s

As a form of endorsement,
more important, to lend his perso-
nal encouragement, Mr. Dearborn
expressed his enthusiasm in a letter
to all the people of Aruba.

It reads:

"The account of Lago’s plan to
initiate a traffic accident preven-
tion program on the island of Aru-
ba in collaboration with other social
and business organizations is to be
highly commended. After my de-
lightful visit to your wonderful is-
land, I have a personal interest in
your program and_ consequently
would like to register my enthu-
siasm for the fine plans currently
being developed.

"The pain, the anguish, the mourn- |

ing caused by traffic accidents are
needless, yet they are with us
every minute of the hour, every hour
of the day. And, why? Why should
we cause ourselves such tragedy.
Oddly enough, we do it to ourselves.
Every time we accelerate our car
excessively, pass on curves, take

and,

chances, disregard laws, are
racing into tragedy.

"That’s why a program
}your Back the Attack on Traffic
Accidents is so important. It re-
minds us of our responsiblity to
ourselves, our families, our neigh-
bors and our community to drive
safely and obey the laws of the
road. When you and your friends
|see BTAOTA’s colorful stickers,
posters and signs, do as they sug-
gest: slow down, obey laws and
Back the Attack on Traffic Acci-
dents.

"I’m very enthusiastic about your
traffic safety program. Aruba
quickly became one of my favorite
islands after spending three enjoy-
| able days on your sunny shores. The
{thought of it becoming an island
where drivers are always safety
conscious is very encouraging to
me as a friend and as president of
the National Safety Council.

"You have my sincere best wish-
jes that your program is a complete

fewer traffic accidents and

ARUBA’S XVII OLYMPIAD

Possibly the largest crowd ever }
to gather in Aruba, an estimated
10,000 persons, witnessed the 17th
Olympiad April 29 and by their
presence and enthusiasm, helped to
make it a memorable night.

From the first solemn parading
of the 136 athletes around the Sport
Park to the presentation to Enrique
Vorst, track and field star, the tro-
phy as "Outstanding Athlete’, the
Olympiad offered one exciting event
after another.

Ringing the fences and crowding
nearby rooftops the overflow crowd
saw Vorst win four events and run
up a total of 20 points for the out- |
standing athlete competition. He was
first in the 100, 220, running broad
jump and javelin events. Not too far
behind him was Irenus Krytoff with

Weekend Seore
———

The weekend started as a peace- |
ful one. Serenity touched the is- |
land as only it can in the Carib- |
bean. The sun shone brightly; |
quiet and happiness prevailed.
Suddenly everything that was)
peaceful and gay was shattered
by a blaring horn, screeching
brakes, the high pitched sound of
gnashing steel. Then quiet again.
But only momentary. A child's
ery broke through the still and
was joined by a mother’s sob, a
father’s moan. Ambulance and po-
lice car sirens announced they
were coming. Pedestrians ran to
the scene: automobile accident.

This succession of events un-
fortunately signals the start of
just about every weekend on Aru-
ba’s highways. Aruba boasts over
100 miles of asphalt roads. These
same roads, however, are being |
used as the means through which |
speeders, law breakers, drunken |
drivers, hot rods and show offs
exercise their lack of regard for
their compatriots. Just take two
weekends ago.

It started as a quiet, normal
weekend. Shortly after seven in
the morning the first accident oc-
curred. It was followed that day
and the next by 11 others. Twist-
ed, scarred, broken shapes J

Lago Adds
To Island
Water Supply

Lago is again proving itself to
be a good neighbor and citizen.
Increased consumption of drink-
ing water and a consequent short-
age in the government supply has
resulted in Lago supplying 100

tons a day to the government to |

relieve the shortage.

Beginning April 11 the water was
pumped into the government lines
at a metered connection near the
Reception Center. The 100 tons re-
presents over 26,000 gallons.

It is anticipated that the arrange-
ment will continue until the new
water distillation plant at Balashi
goes into operation sometime next
year.

On a number of similar occasions
during the past years Lago has act-
ed as a friend of the community and
supplied drinking water in varying
amounts and for varying lengths of
time to augment government sup-
plies depleted by large consumption,
dry spells or mechanical failures.

Water supply on the island has
always been a major problem. Lago
now has two units which evaporate
sea water with a capacity of around
20,000 barrels a day. Of this all but
6500 barrels is used for various pur-
poses inside the concession, the re-
mainder being drinking water. Con-
sumption of drinking water at La-
go is approximately 5500 barrels a
day. Water for chemical use is still
brought to Lago by the shipload,
100,000 barrels at a time. Importing
of drinking water stopped in 1953.
A few years earlier Lago’s conden-
sation processes began to make it
more advantageous to produce its
own fresh water from the sea.
