so Research and Engineering Com-
pany has reported on the machine
that will supply the brain...... offi-
cially known as a general purpose

Essentially the computer will sup-

It will record key refining process
variables such as temperatures and
pressures and will use this informa-
tion to calculate 11 so-called "ope-
rating guides.” The computer will
then print this information on log
sheets.

This material will be available at
the push of a button, whereas for-
merly engineers were required to
inspect units regularly, obtain the
data by various calculations and
then feed these facts into the com-
puter back in the office.

Two electrically-operated _ type-
writers that punch all data on pa-
per tape for storage and accounting
analysis on business machines are
part of the unit.

All of the equipment, expect the
typewriters, will be housed in three
cabinets each measuring about five

by two feet. The typewriters will

be mounted separately on a console
desk.

GRAND TOUR

Here is Mr. Severino Luydens, who knows the |
topography of the refinery as well as any man
who works here, and undoubtedly better than |
most.

For Mr. Luydens is keeper of the Reception
Center and tour leader extraordinary, a man who |
has escorted (since November 1952) somewhere |
around 18,000 visitors through the plant, a man
who has stood in countless group photographs
(which will eventually go out to the people in
them bearing the legend "A Souvenir of Your
Visit To Lago”), a man who has shaken hands
with people from all over the world, a man whose
line of chatter about the refinery is as full of
fact as a legal notice and as glib as a circus
barker’s.

Anyone who proposes to take the Luydens
Tour, one of the functions of the many-armed
Public Relations Department, had better count
on it taking up the whole morning.

It would be hard to find a more assorted selec-
tion that those who have gone on the Lago tours
at one time or another. Mr. Luydens has ushered
through all the teachers on the island (in one
concentrated week), the Federal Legislative
Council for the Netherlands Antilles, the Par-
liamentary Commission for the Antilles, Surinam
and Holland, the Caribbean Commission, the Ca-
ribbean Tourist Commission, athletic teams from
Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cu-
racao, Windward Islands, British Guiana, and Su-
rinam, the Surinam Philharmonic Orchestra,
Miami travel agents, local and foreign newspa-
permen, writers and naturalists, and various lo-
cal and foreign dignitaries, including United
States Senator Norris Cotton.

Explanation

On the day it is scheduled, the group arrives
at the Reception Center. Mr. Luydens
each one personally, if possible, before showing
them around the Center. He explains the exhi-
bits, and then for a few minutes describes some
of Lago’s major routines: where the oil comes
from, what is done to it here, where it goes, and

meets

then he explains what the visitors will see in
the plant.

Working with strangers who are for the most
part unfamiliar with refinery operations can be
tilled with harrowing experiences, and Mr. Luy-
dens, seeking to anticipate everything, lays down
ground rules for behavior: the group must walk
two-by-two; they must not walk one direction
while looking another; must at all times watch
where there are going. By these rules Mr. Luy-
dens hopes to establish some safety principles in
the minds of his flock. That he has been eminent-
ly successful is indicated by the cheerful statistic
that in all his tours there has been not a single
anjury, not even a wind-blown particle in an eye.

Neither has he ever lost anybody. It would be
expected that of the thousands of people who
nave climbed on and off tour buses over the
years, at least one would manage to straggle off
from the group and not show up at the gate
for a day or two, but Mr. Luydens, with a I-
isnow-mine-and-mine-know-me air, keeps every-
o0dy close in hand.

Two Hours

The group, after its brief indoctrination, piles
aboard a bus about 9:15 in the morning, and
Joesn’t return for another two hours. In between
lJeparture and arrival the bus goes all over the
plant and stops at several points; the shops, a
still, the laboratories and the GOB. One time
luring a visit to the Machine Shop a girl in the
group was startled by the overhead crane, and
seized Mr. Luydens about the neck in fright. He,

| startled too, worked hard to free himself, much

o the delight of the others in the tour.

After returning to the Reception Center around
11:15, refreshments in the form of cold soft
jrinks are served and Mr. Luydens answers any
questions they may have left over. Souvenirs --
nail files, combs, small screwdrivers or a pen --
ure distributed, the picture is made, and another
flock of new friends of Lago depart.

Then Mr. Luydens goes back to his desk,
checks his mail, eyes the calendar and starts
scheduling another tour

Essentially the computer will sup-

It will record key refining process
variables such as temperatures and
pressures and will use this informa-
tion to calculate 11 so-called "ope-

then print this information on log
sheets.

This material will be available at
the push of a button, whereas for-
merly engineers were required to
inspect units regularly, obtain the
data by various calculations and
then feed these facts into the com-
puter back in the office.

Two electrically-operated _ type-
writers that punch all data on pa-

analysis on business machines are
part of the unit.

All of the equipment, expect the
typewriters, will be housed in three
cabinets each measuring about five

be mounted separately on a console
desk.

GRAND TOUR

Here is Mr. Severino Luydens, who knows the |
topography of the refinery as well as any man
who works here, and undoubtedly better than |
most.

For Mr. Luydens is keeper of the Reception
Center and tour leader extraordinary, a man who |
has escorted (since November 1952) somewhere |
around 18,000 visitors through the plant, a man
who has stood in countless group photographs
(which will eventually go out to the people in
them bearing the legend "A Souvenir of Your
Visit To Lago”), a man who has shaken hands
with people from all over the world, a man whose
line of chatter about the refinery is as full of
fact as a legal notice and as glib as a circus
barker’s.

Anyone who proposes to take the Luydens
Tour, one of the functions of the many-armed
Public Relations Department, had better count
on it taking up the whole morning.

It would be hard to find a more assorted selec-
tion that those who have gone on the Lago tours
at one time or another. Mr. Luydens has ushered
through all the teachers on the island (in one
concentrated week), the Federal Legislative
Council for the Netherlands Antilles, the Par-
liamentary Commission for the Antilles, Surinam
and Holland, the Caribbean Commission, the Ca-
ribbean Tourist Commission, athletic teams from
Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cu-
racao, Windward Islands, British Guiana, and Su-
rinam, the Surinam Philharmonic Orchestra,
Miami travel agents, local and foreign newspa-
permen, writers and naturalists, and various lo-
cal and foreign dignitaries, including United
States Senator Norris Cotton.

Explanation

On the day it is scheduled, the group arrives
at the Reception Center. Mr. Luydens
each one personally, if possible, before showing
them around the Center. He explains the exhi-
bits, and then for a few minutes describes some
of Lago’s major routines: where the oil comes
from, what is done to it here, where it goes, and

meets

then he explains what the visitors will see in
the plant.

Working with strangers who are for the most
part unfamiliar with refinery operations can be
tilled with harrowing experiences, and Mr. Luy-
dens, seeking to anticipate everything, lays down
ground rules for behavior: the group must walk
two-by-two; they must not walk one direction
while looking another; must at all times watch
where there are going. By these rules Mr. Luy-
dens hopes to establish some safety principles in
the minds of his flock. That he has been eminent-
ly successful is indicated by the cheerful statistic
that in all his tours there has been not a single
anjury, not even a wind-blown particle in an eye.

Neither has he ever lost anybody. It would be
expected that of the thousands of people who
nave climbed on and off tour buses over the
years, at least one would manage to straggle off
from the group and not show up at the gate
for a day or two, but Mr. Luydens, with a I-
isnow-mine-and-mine-know-me air, keeps every-
o0dy close in hand.

Two Hours

The group, after its brief indoctrination, piles
aboard a bus about 9:15 in the morning, and
Joesn’t return for another two hours. In between
lJeparture and arrival the bus goes all over the
plant and stops at several points; the shops, a
still, the laboratories and the GOB. One time
luring a visit to the Machine Shop a girl in the
group was startled by the overhead crane, and
seized Mr. Luydens about the neck in fright. He,

| startled too, worked hard to free himself, much

o the delight of the others in the tour.

After returning to the Reception Center around
11:15, refreshments in the form of cold soft
jrinks are served and Mr. Luydens answers any
questions they may have left over. Souvenirs --
nail files, combs, small screwdrivers or a pen --
ure distributed, the picture is made, and another
flock of new friends of Lago depart.

Then Mr. Luydens goes back to his desk,
checks his mail, eyes the calendar and starts
scheduling another tour
