IN THE not too distant future, Aruba’s Palm Beach will front one of the

most ultra-modern hotels in the Caribbean. Pictured here is a model of

the hostelry created by

Architect Morris Lapidus of Miami. On the left

is the beach and on the right is the new boulevard. The second lane has

yet to be added. According to Mr.

Lapidus, the hotel should be ready

Jan. 1, 1958 at a cost of approximately Fls. 3,000,000.

Jersey Standard said. MAORT had
some 4,000 Hungarian employees
when the company was taken in
1948. Thus far four former employ-

gram.

Under the Jersey Standard plan,
former employees obtaining refuge

the United States will receive
$150 cash on arrival, subsistence re-

assistance in finding permanent em-

Announcement of the employee-

Wins Spelling
Championship

Aruba’s Arturo Thijsen was a
first-round winner in a _ seven-
county spelling contest, according

to a news clipping from the Allen-
town Call-Chronicle. Arturo is liv-
ing in Allentown as one of the vo-
cational school scholarship winners.

By winning the championship of
his home room in Allentown High
School, Arturo won a bronze medal.
In the next round of competition
he will spell against other home
room champions in his school, and
from that, winners will go on to
semi-finals and finals. Thus he has
the opportunity of winning more
honors and more awards.

In the first week of the old-
fashioned spelling bee, more than
38,000 students competed in the en-
tire area.

1956 Rainfall
Third Heaviest

In TSD Annals
Total Fall of 36.10
Less Than ’55, ’50

Although it seemed to a lot of
people tnat a lot of rain tell on
Aruba last year, they were only
partially rignt. A lot of rain did
tall on Aruba, but not quite as
mucn as many suspected.

Aruba was on the underside of
36.10 inches of rainfall, the third
largest fall since 1929. Last year’s
figure was some two plus inches
less than the year before (1955)
when the total fall was 38.42. And
this figure, although a rather sub-
stantial one, stands as somewhat
less than the leading year of 1950
when Aruba felt itself pelted by
a rainfall of 44.16 inches.

The year 1956 put one record in
Aruba's rainfall record book. Janu-
ary, the month that got itself and
the year off to a wet start, expe-
rienced a fall of 8.95 inches. This
was the heaviest January fall ever
noted by the Technical Service De-
partment laboratories since the ob-
servations were started in 1929. The
January fall was also far in excess
of the average first month fall of
2.21. It was also the heaviest of 1956.

February came through with 4.69
inches, the second highest total as
did August with 1.70 inches and
October with 7.73 inches. The De-
cember observed fall of 8.12 proved
to be the third largest fall on re-
cord, and the second heaviest of
1956 trailing January by 0.83.

Interestingly enough, while the
year 1956 was the third wettest in
TSD history, only five months ex-
ceeded the average fall. The rest
were far below the average and
gave Aruba months of near-arid
weather. And those months were
from March through August when
the best Aruba could muster in the
way of water from above was 0.81
inches. March was the driest month
with a bare 0.36 fall. The only other
month to fall below the average was
November. It had a very weak 2.50,
practically two inches under the
average fell, and a woeful 12 inch-
es under the record fall for one
month of 14.66 established in the
11th month of 1955.

CARE OF lab equipment was a

Cee —

When a man works for nearly 30 years with one company, | cutting sugar cane in Cuba, and finally Aruba. In 1927--on

and when those 30 years have spanned such a period of

development as Lago has seen since 1926, he can carry into |

his retirement a number of warm satisfactions.

Such a man is Pierre Greaux, who retired at the close of
1956 as corporal in the laboratory. As a sort of guide he has
shepherded literally hundreds of young engineers and che-
mists through the burners and retorts and in effect sent them
on their way up; some of the younger men he worked with
before Dec. 31 might well be sons of those he knew in 1927.

His name is Pierre, but there are those who call him Pedro,
and still others who call him Peter. But Pierre it is, and a
fine name too. It is like the man himself, unmistakably Gallic.
The hair is gray and unruly, hanging in straight shocks over
his forehead. Below a hawk nose his mustache is a brother
to the hair on his head, gray, unruly. Brown eyes set off a
face lined and seamed by 60 years of Caribbean sun and
storm. A slight figure with a gentle stoop, possessing full
measure of pride in himself and in his nearly 30 years of
work, he knows he has done well.

He was born in St. Barthelemy, a citizen of France, and
for sixty years he has carried a fierce French pride that had
its outward manifestation every Bastille Day when he would
come to the laboratory and sing "The Marseillaise’, the
French national anthem, in what a witness recalls even after
many years was a '’gruesome”’ voice.

Mr. Greaux--pronounced gray-o--left his island in 1920 and
started to work. First it was fishing in St. Thomas, then

BEFORE LEAVING the job Pedro stopped at the Indus-
trial Relations Department to fill out some of the papers
relative to his annuity and thrift plans.
PROMER CU el a stop di traha Pedro a pasa na Indus-
trial Relations Department pa yena algun di e papelnan

Jan. 9, his birthday--he started working on the new dock the
refinery was building. After a few months of this he began
working for Lago in a variety of places: the Dining Hall, the

| dynamite gang, where he was "just like a messenger boy,”

the blacksmith shop, then back to the dynamite gang. The

| reason for this movement was that Pierre in these days was

one of the few men around who could speak English. (Today
he speaks Spanish and Papiamento in addition to English
and his natve French.) He went to the lab in March 1929

The men he worked for and with there form almost a
Who's Who in Lago. Foremost among them was Frank
Campbell, at that time chief chemist and later general man-
ager of the company. Then there was Dr. Broz, now in Bay-
way, and some others who have since gone on to other posts
at Lago: Jim Rosborough, assistant division head, LOF, T. F.
Hagerty, executive assistant, Harold Ashlock, operations co-
ordinator, and Hans Gregersen, CYI secretary.

In his years in the labs, Pedro grew into an institution
For a long time he worked by himself, in the days when the
labs weren’t as extensive as they are now. Because he was
an observant man, and more important, because he remem-
bered everything, he made himself immensely valuable be-
yond his job. For example he was often able to help new
engineers by teaching them the technique of taking pressure
samples.

In the early days he was the right hand man of Dr. James
Reid, now retired, who was one of the first men in the
laboratory operation here. It was then he developed his re-
markable memory. Unable to read English, Pedro was able
to remember equipment by its shape or number. On one oc-
casion when it was needed, he was able to go to the attic
and immediately put his hands on a piece of chemical ap-
paratus that had not been used in two and a half years.

He had a special way of making coffee that had the right
taste for everybody, a considerable achievement in a com-
munity where coffee drinking is a rite (H. Chippendale, TSD
superintendent, always came by the lab for his); his trade-
mark in dominoes, which he played with a single-minded in-
tensity during lunch hours, was slapping them down with
resounding cracks. He was never late, never AWOL and went
through his long Lago career without a single disciplinary
action being taken against him.

He was a man given to hard work and paired it with an
honesty so complete that it could only be his nature. For
many years he held the only master key in the laboratory:
it would open any door or any lock. The only people to whom
he could give the key were Frank Campbell and Dr. Reid,
no one else. Once a high official asked Pedro for the key,
and Pedro true to his instructions refused to give it to him
After a long debate, the official gave up and Pedro kept his
integrity--and his key. He was easy to get along with but
detended himself against all when he was right and someone
else wrong.

Safety never had a more ardent practitioner in the labs
than Pedro. He kept his eye alert for various violations of
safe practices, and more than once his cry of "It ain't safe-
ty!’ has startled a group head or junior engineer or lab as-
sistant on a test. And heaven spare the man walking up
stairs with a bottle of liquid in each hand if Pedro saw him

He was a precedent breaker. When it came time for him
to receive his watch for 25 years of service he insisted on a

cara cu a mira 60 anja di solo y storm den Caribe.

algun otro cu despues a bai pa otro posicionnan den Lago:
Jim Rosborough, assistant division head, LOF, T. F. Hagerty,
executive assistant, Harold Ashlock, operations coordinator,

Den e promer temponan el tabata man drechi di Dr. James

couldn't help the children there, and
a variety show was a good way of
doing it. For Alicia, it was the way
she knew best; she being an accom-
albeit a young one.

The young lady quickly rounded
up all her dancing friends, gained
the support of her brother and listen-
ed to the sage advice of her mother.
Before long the show ’’For the Kids,
By the Kids’ was ready for its open-

ing performance at the Lago Club.
| There were dancers; there were

singers; there were comedy acts. All
were directed by Alicia; all were put
on by the kids, for the kids. The
show scored such a success that it
was repeated in the Surinam Club.

Following the second showing,
Alicia took the proceeds of the two
pertormances - Fls. 278 in all - and
turned it over to W. J. Dinnissen of
the government police.

With this sum and moved by Ali-
cia’s contageous enthusiasm to help
the unfortunate, Mr. Dinnissen soli-
cited funds from other sources. He
got together Fls. 1250 with which
he purchased gifts for the Aruban
children in Curacao hospitals.

Shortly before Christmas Alicia
and Freddy Dirksz, another main-
stay of the show, took off for Cura-
cao with their gifts. Their trip to the
sister island and back was made pos-
sible through the courtesy of the
Royal Dutch Airlines as its part in
"for the kids, by the kids.”

Alicia personally saw the comple-
tion of her project in the handing
out of gifts to those less fortunate.
It undoubtedly was a Christmas the
youngsters in Curacao will remem-

Water Plant Work Begun

Aruba’s economic potential took a major upsurge last week when|

work on the new water distillation

plant at Balashi was begun in the}

presence of hundreds of government and business leaders of the area.
58 the plant will provide water for
he present price. With its capacity

Scheduled to go on stream in 19:
the island’s needs at about half t
of 2,700,000 gallons of fresh water
a day, the plant will rank among
the largest of its kind in the world.
As a by-product the plant will ge-
nerate enough electricity to handle
some of the island’s needs.

Finance Minister J. E. Yrausquin,
who backed the proje told the
crowd that the plant’s’ existence
would guarantee the basic need of in-
dustry, cheap water, and would serve
as a means to diversify Aruba’s eco-
nomy. The minister touched off
dynamite blast which signified the
beginning of the actual work on the
plant.

On the program with
Irausquin was W. H. Finkelday, pre-
sident of the engineering firm of
Singmaster and Breyer, builders of
the plant and Deputy O. S. Henriquez
who traced the development of water
supply on the island.

Lt. Gov. L. C. Kwartsz offered the
official thanks of the government to
those who supported the new plant:
Mr. Yrausquin, who instigated it;
the engineering firm; Lago, who of-
fered technical assistance, as well as
agreeing to purchase large quantities
of water, and to the Government
Pension Foundation and Lago Thrift
Foundation which made funds avail-
able on a long term loan. |

In his remarks Mr. Finkelday
pointed out the drawbacks of the
previous limited water system; it
was, he said, "barely enough to meet
the needs of your population” and
it "stood as a bar to the establish-
ment of new industries through
which the island’s economy might
have been improved.”

1956 Rainfall
Third Heaviest

In TSD Annals
Total Fall of 36.10
Less Than ’55, ’50

Although it seemed to a lot of
people tnat a lot of rain tell on
Aruba last year, they were only
partially rignt. A lot of rain did
tall on Aruba, but not quite as
mucn as many suspected.

Aruba was on the underside of
36.10 inches of rainfall, the third
largest fall since 1929. Last year’s
figure was some two plus inches
less than the year before (1955)
when the total fall was 38.42. And
this figure, although a rather sub-
stantial one, stands as somewhat
less than the leading year of 1950
when Aruba felt itself pelted by
a rainfall of 44.16 inches.

The year 1956 put one record in
Aruba's rainfall record book. Janu-
ary, the month that got itself and
the year off to a wet start, expe-
rienced a fall of 8.95 inches. This
was the heaviest January fall ever
noted by the Technical Service De-
partment laboratories since the ob-
servations were started in 1929. The
January fall was also far in excess
of the average first month fall of
2.21. It was also the heaviest of 1956.

February came through with 4.69
inches, the second highest total as
did August with 1.70 inches and
October with 7.73 inches. The De-
cember observed fall of 8.12 proved
to be the third largest fall on re-
cord, and the second heaviest of
1956 trailing January by 0.83.

Interestingly enough, while the
year 1956 was the third wettest in
TSD history, only five months ex-
ceeded the average fall. The rest
were far below the average and
gave Aruba months of near-arid
weather. And those months were
from March through August when
the best Aruba could muster in the
way of water from above was 0.81
inches. March was the driest month
with a bare 0.36 fall. The only other
month to fall below the average was
November. It had a very weak 2.50,
practically two inches under the
average fell, and a woeful 12 inch-
es under the record fall for one
month of 14.66 established in the
11th month of 1955.

CARE OF lab equipment was a

PEDRO LOOKS over the work-

liam is at right.

bai laria; algun di e hombernan mas hoben hunto cu kende

cara cu a mira 60 anja di solo y storm den Caribe.

boratorio y canta ''Marseillaise,’ himno nacional Frances
den un voz pisa.

Sr. Greaux — pronuncid gray-o — a laga su isla na 1920
y a cuminza traha. Promer tabata piscamento na St. Thomas,
despues corta canja na Cuba, y finalmente Aruba. Na 1927
e dock nobo cu e refineria tabata traha.
respondi,” blacksmith shop, y atrobe pa dynamite gang. E
motibo pa e movemento aki tabata cu Pierre den e tempo

Campbell, e tempo chief chemist y despues gerente general
di e compania. Anto tabatin Dr. Broz, awor na Bayway, y
algun otro cu despues a bai pa otro posicionnan den Lago:
Jim Rosborough, assistant division head, LOF, T. F. Hagerty,
executive assistant, Harold Ashlock, operations coordinator,

cion. Hopi tempo el tabata traha sol, den e dianan cu labo-
ratorio no tabata asina grandi manera awor.
a yuda enginieronan nobo door di sinja nan e metodo di coi
muestra bao presion.

Den e promer temponan el tabata man drechi di Dr. James
tabata recorda hermentnan pa nan forma y number.

master key den laboratorio: esaki ta habri cualkier porta of
cualkier slot.
tabata Frank Campbell y Dr. Reid, ningun hende mas. Un

couldn't help the children there, and
a variety show was a good way of
doing it. For Alicia, it was the way
she knew best; she being an accom-
albeit a young one.

The young lady quickly rounded
up all her dancing friends, gained
the support of her brother and listen-
ed to the sage advice of her mother.
Before long the show ’’For the Kids,
By the Kids’ was ready for its open-

plished dancer

ing performance at the Lago Club.
| There were dancers; there were

singers; there were comedy acts. All
were directed by Alicia; all were put
on by the kids, for the kids. The
show scored such a success that it
was repeated in the Surinam Club.

Following the second showing,
Alicia took the proceeds of the two
pertormances - Fls. 278 in all - and
turned it over to W. J. Dinnissen of
the government police.

With this sum and moved by Ali-
cia’s contageous enthusiasm to help
the unfortunate, Mr. Dinnissen soli-
cited funds from other sources. He
got together Fls. 1250 with which
he purchased gifts for the Aruban
children in Curacao hospitals.

Shortly before Christmas Alicia
and Freddy Dirksz, another main-
stay of the show, took off for Cura-
cao with their gifts. Their trip to the
sister island and back was made pos-
sible through the courtesy of the
Royal Dutch Airlines as its part in
"for the kids, by the kids.”

Alicia personally saw the comple-
tion of her project in the handing
out of gifts to those less fortunate.
It undoubtedly was a Christmas the
youngsters in Curacao will remem-

{ber a long time. Alicia will.

Water Plant Work Begun

Aruba’s economic potential took a major upsurge last week when|

work on the new water distillation

plant at Balashi was begun in the}

presence of hundreds of government and business leaders of the area.
58 the plant will provide water for
he present price. With its capacity

Scheduled to go on stream in 19:
the island’s needs at about half t
of 2,700,000 gallons of fresh water
a day, the plant will rank among
the largest of its kind in the world.
As a by-product the plant will ge-
nerate enough electricity to handle
some of the island’s needs.

Finance Minister J. E. Yrausquin,
who backed the proje told the
crowd that the plant’s’ existence
would guarantee the basic need of in-
dustry, cheap water, and would serve
as a means to diversify Aruba’s eco-
nomy. The minister touched off
dynamite blast which signified the
beginning of the actual work on the
plant.

On the program with
Irausquin was W. H. Finkelday, pre-
sident of the engineering firm of
Singmaster and Breyer, builders of
the plant and Deputy O. S. Henriquez
who traced the development of water
supply on the island.

Lt. Gov. L. C. Kwartsz offered the
official thanks of the government to
those who supported the new plant:
Mr. Yrausquin, who instigated it;
the engineering firm; Lago, who of-
fered technical assistance, as well as
agreeing to purchase large quantities
of water, and to the Government
Pension Foundation and Lago Thrift
Foundation which made funds avail-
able on a long term loan. |

In his remarks Mr. Finkelday
pointed out the drawbacks of the
previous limited water system; it
was, he said, "barely enough to meet
the needs of your population” and
it "stood as a bar to the establish-
ment of new industries through
which the island’s economy might
have been improved.”
