‘Wrong Way Wind’ Upsets Island's

Composure; Some Damage Wrought

For a number of days - specifi-
cally those few that closed Octo-
ber and the first five that opened
November - residents of Aruba
fell victim to a very uncommon
happening hereabouts. The wind
changed direction and then picked
up a steady velocity and maintained
it for a rather lengthy period.

Throughout the major portion of
the world the average person pays
little heed to the wind unless it
sumes unnaturally large propor-
tions. Other than that the wind can

swing to any direction it chooses
without the slightest notice from
anyone. Not so in Aruba, however.

When the Trade Winds that con-
stantly blow out of the east vary
the slightest degree it is almost as
if something tragic had befallen the
island. Aruba and its people are
tuned for one-way-living with a one-
way-wind.

With the end of October the wind
started to shift. It swung a com-
plete 180 degrees and until Nov. 5
blew out of the west. Everything
shifted with it and went the other
way; everything, that is, except the
poor divi divi tree. So accustomed
is it to one-way-living that it just
couldn't bring itself around to a
change. The smoke blew the wrong
way, the flags blew the wrong way,
the cool rooms were on the usually
hot side of the house, rains came out
of the west and the island’s beaches
the normally calm south and
southwest sides took a terrific lacing

| while the usually active breakers no
longer rocked into the stoney clifts
of the east and north shores.

Shores Pounded

Havoc was raised on the shores.
Breakers mounting to heights of 10
and 15 feet pounded the shores from
California Light to Colorado Point.
Malmok’s jagged coastline drew
many spectators who were fascinated
by the antics of the pounding waves’
leaping sprays. Palm Beach took its
share of the beating. Waves raced
up the sloping sand banks and when
the receded left behind all sorts of
ugly debris mar an otherwise
sautiful beach. Fortunately nature
very often has ways of cleaning up
her own mess and not too long after
the wind returned to its rightful di-
rection, the sun, rain and normal
tides had once again cleared the

to

area and gave back to Aruba its
beautiful Palm Beach.

Coming up the south shore, the
boulevard along Oranjestad’s water-
front market was torn up in spots.
Water inundated the flats south of
Sabaneta and San Nicolas. San Ni-
colas Harbor also experienced mo-
ments of anxiety. Tanker travel in
and out the harbor was made more
difficult by winds buffeting the big
ships from the stern instead of head
on. The tricky winds and tides claim-
ed one ship Nov. 4. The MS Adrias
was hung up on some coral coming
|through the West Entrance. Her
grief was only momentary, however,
and she was soon freed to deliver
her cargo to Lago’s stills,

Gusts Up To 30 MPH

It was the consensus of opinion
that a wind out of the west had
never before hit Aruba with such
velocity. It averaged about 15 miles
an hour and hit gusts of 30 miles
an hour. Some say the spell was re-
miniscent of a period in 1932. Others

£ the '32 incident couldn’t com-
pare with the weather of two weeks
ago.

Finally Hurricane Greta, who

floundered some 250 miles north of
Puerto Rico, and rightly or wrong-
ly was blamed for Aruba’s weather,
blew herself out to the Atlantic
Ocean. In so doing the normal, cool
15-mile-an-hour Trade Winds took
up their usual position and once
again crossed Aruba from the east.

And with all the crazy wind-do-

generous amount of
rain, lightening and thunder. Al-
though no record, the 7.7 inches
that fell during October was next
best to the record October fall of
9.19 recorded in 1954.

The rain was plentiful, however,
and afforded Aruba the opportunity
of putting on a green blanket. This
she did and, as always, there are
those who come out with the in-
evitable: "Aruba is greener today
than ever before.” Be that as it may
- it’s just a matter of opinion - Aru-
ba is green, it rained enough to re-
pl h the lakes in Santa Cruz and
set to running a couple of the is-
land’s normally dried-up streams.
And it looks as if it will continue to
rain a wee bit more. Already over
three inches have been downed on
Aruba's green carpet.

receive the lump sum of Fls. 25.

The 79 cents for each guilder con-
tributed marks an increase of four
cents over last year’s 75. It also
marks the 17th consecutive year
that Lago has given its employees
an additional contribution.

Also of great importance to many
employee-participants in the Lago
Thrift Plan is the announcement
that a withdrawal may be made of
two-thirds of the extra contribu-

tion without restriction under
normal administrative rules. In re-
cognition of employees’ expressed
desires to have additional money

during the holidays, a special Christ-
mas withdrawal has been authorized
apart from the normal administra-
tive rules governing withdrawals.
For the first time, participants in
the Lago Thrift Fund regardless of
whether they are eligible for a with-
drawal or not, may make a with-
drawal up to two-thirds of the total
additional contribution.

In order to facilitate this new op-
tional withdrawal, employees must
announce their intentions to the Ac-
counting Department. A timecard-
type questionnaire, to be distributed
to all participants Dec. 1, must be
filled out indicating the employees’
desires and returned not later than
Dec. 6. The withdrawal will be avail-
able Dec. 13 and 14 in plenty of time
for Christmas expenditures.

THIS MAY seem like jumping the season just a bit, but nevertheless

Christmas cover through the Aruba Philatelic Society.

Santa and St. Nicolaas
Form Philatelic Covers

Indiana may have its Santa Claus,
but Aruba has its St. Nicolaas, and
stamp collectors all over the world
will know about if the plans of the
Aruba Philatelist Society go through
as expected.

Going into the St. Nicolaas post
office on Christmas Eve will be 2000
specially designed envelopes—’’cov-
ers” to the stamp collector—bearing
the cheerful face of the jolly old
gentleman himself and the words
"Greeting from Santa Claus at St.
Nicolaas, Aruba, Netherlands Antil-
les.” The illustration and the words
will be printed in a holiday red.

The idea belongs to the local
stamp club. They decided that the
proximity of such a name deserved
mention, so they devised the cover
and advertised in stamp journals in
the states that the covers were
available. Already orders for more
than 1000 have poured in, one from a
man in the Gilbert Islands in the
middle of the Pacific Ocean. Re-
quests from practically every state
in the United States and every pro-
vince of Canada have arrived, and
many from Europe.

Local residents who are stamp
collectors or who want to send a
Christmas cover to friends can ar-
range for it by addressing Aruba
Philatelic Society, P. O. Box 513,
Lago Colony, and enclosing 50 c.
for each cover, or Fls. 2.00 for five,
along with list of complete names
and addresses to which the covers
will be sent. The stamp club will do
the rest. They will all be postmark-
ed Dec. 24.

If there are any profits, half will
go to next year’s cover design, and
half to veterans’ organizations to
buy stamp albums for hospitals.

Plans Readied for Aruba Hotel

Miami Architect
Visits Aruba Cite

The swank resort hotel planned
for Aruba is closer than ever to
reality. After conferring with Aru-
ba business and government people
who are backing the project, ar-
chiteect Morris Lapidus has an-
nounced that ground clearing at
the Palm Beach site would begin
immediately.

Thus the first step will be taken
in the biggest project yet under-
taken on the island to attract in-
creasing tourist trade, a source of
tremendous revenue throughout the
Caribbean area.

According to Mr. Lapidus’ pre-
dictions the building—the Aruba
Caribbean Hotel—will be finished
before Jan. 1, 1958. Two con-
tracts will be let for the job: one
for foundation and one for construc-
tion. He believes that the rock bot-
tom just below the sand at Palm
Beach will be an excellent base for
the foundation.

The cost of the entire project is
about Fis. 3,000,000. To raise the
money a corporation was formed in
which the government, which put
up half the money, is represented.
Sale of shares of stock to the public
will account for the remainder of
the capital. Deputy Oscar Henriquez
has revealed that Fils. 50,000 in
shares has already been sold locally,
and said that when construction
gets underway, sales of shares will
increase.

Mr. Lapidus, who designed many
of Miami’s big beach hotels, sub-
mitted preliminary sketches of the
hotel and its related buildings to the
Aruba government in June. Some
changes were recommended, and
final plans were completed in Sep-
tember.

As plans now stand the hotel will
be of contemporary design, adapted
to Aruba’s climatic conditions. It
will have 120 rooms and six suites.
In addition to a dining room, the
facilities will include a_ cocktail
lounge, coffee shop, night club,
swimming pool, barbecue area, and
a small yacht pier. All indoor areas
will be air conditioned.

The architect hopes that bids for
the construction can be requested
by March, 1957.

| Extra Contribution |

(Continued from page 1)
drawal, if used, will not be counted
as a withdrawal for purposes of de-
termining eligibility for withdrawal
under the normal administrative
rules. If no withdrawal is made, the
entire sum will be credited to the
employee’s account under ordinary
handling.

This year the Lago Thrift Plan
had, as of Sept. 30, 100 per cent
participation. And more than 90 per
cent of these are depositing 10 per

cent - the maximum allowed - of
their monthly earnings. The extra
contribution is in addition to the

company’s regular monthly contri-
bution to employee’s savings ac-
counts.

The company also announced that
employees who participated in the
plan Oct. 1, 1956, but cease partici-
pating for any reason prior to Sept.
30, 1957, will receive a _ pro-rated
additional contribution based upon
the length of time they participated

An employee paid Fils. 400 a
month who deposits 10 per cent of
his monthly earnings in his thrift
account will accumulate a total of
Fls. 480 in one year. With the com-
pany contributing 79 cents for each
guilder he saved plus Fls. 25, Lago’s
additional contribution to this em-
ployee’s account will total Fls. 404.20
or eight per cent of his total earn-
ings.

The Fils. 800 a month earner that
contributed 10 per cent to the thrift
fund accumlates a total of Fls. 960
in one year. At 79 cents on the
guilder, the company’s additional
contribution will be Fils. 783.40 -
Fils. 758.40 plus Fis. 25

How To Win Customers And Sell Esso

Working on the sound principle that it’s not enough
to sell a motorist gas, check the oil and send him on
his way, Lago’s Marketing Division is currently ac-
quainting the island’s Esso dealers with some Esso
techniques for improved customer relations and in-
creased sales.

Acting as professor of salesmanship and station ope-
ration is John B. Crowley of the Delaware, Maryland
and District of Columbia Division of Esso Standard
Oil. He is currently finishing up a six-week assignment
developed by Lago and his company. His job with Esso
is salesman supervisor; the men who work for him
do the same job in the States that he has done here.

Mr. Crowley spent a week working with the dealers
and men in each of the island’s six stations. His aim
was to go far beyond the mere selling of gas and oil.
What he sought to do -- and did with great success, ac-
cording to the dealers themselves -- was to acquaint
them with what other Esso products are, what they
can do, and how to use them. Everyone in the station,
lubrication man, island man or manager, has a full
knowledge of all accessories offered for sale.

His ideas for pushing various items to stimulate

de Windt.

THERE IS a good way and a better way
to do everything in a service station, even
-- or especially -- the bookkeeping. Here
Mr. Crowley gives a tip to Miss Mathilda

sales have already borne fruit. In one station, supplies
of motor cleaner, exhaust deflectors and upper motor
lubricants were sold out in two days. Also coming in
for examination and recommendation by the expert
were office procedures and good housekeeping in the
stations.

But Marketing feels that the most enduring good to
come from Mr. Crowley’s stay is the fact that he is
coaching dealers to coach their own employees in sales
technique and smooth operation. By this the extra
bit of service and interest in a customer’s needs will
become a continuing tradition here.

Two other items have been introduced to the local
stations in the wake of Mr. Crowley’s visit. One is a
commission system which provides rewards for the
station employee who does a good selling job; the otker
is the Mystery Motorist campaign. A motorist, un-
known to the station personnel, will visit the stations
from time to time, and where he finds special courtesy,
friendliness and service, he will distribute cash prizes.

The stations Mr. Crowley visited were Frank Croes’,
A.M. Arends’, J. Oduber’s, Viana’s, Scholten’s and
Ecury’s.

NADA TA mucho chikito pa worde gecheck, y
esaki ta inclui un wiper di windshield. Bon negoshi

The last days of October and the first few that ushered in November
will long be remembered. For during that period of this year, 1956, the
wind blew the ’wrong way’. Instead of coming out of the east it swung
180 degrees and blew for all it was worth from out of the west. The
crazy, mixed-up wind not only completely perplexed the one-way divi-

strictly to one way living. Wind from the opposite direction was just
not natural and as can be seen in the pictures on this page caused a

Amateur Fight
Tourney Planned
For Sport Park

Last year’s enormously successful
amateur boxing tournament has
prompted the Lago Sport Park
Board to arrange a similiar event
|for January. An estimated 10,000
boxing buffs watched the three
nghts of fights last year.

Entry forms must be filled out
and submitted before Dec. 22. Blanks
|may be obtained from any member
of the Lago Sport Park Board or at
the Sport Park, and can be returned
to the same sources when completed.

Definite scheduling of the fights
must await final registration but it
is believed that a record number of
amateurs will participate. If this is
so then probably there will be more
than three nights of bouts.

All weight divisions will be re-
presented. For guidance, here are
listed the classifications and the
weight limits for each:

Flyweight: up to 118 pounds.

Bantamweight: 118-128 pounds

Lightweight: 128-135 pounds
Welterweight: 135-147 pounds
Middleweight: 147-160 pounds
‘ Light heavyweight: 160 - 175
| pounds
Heavyweight: 175 pounds and
over.

The forms will be available short-
ly. Complete instructions as to mi-
nimum age of participants and
other considerations are on the form.

EXCEPT FOR one little detail,
Paul Kravitz might put in his claim
as track’s Hard Luck Champ. As a
member of the Columbus, N. Y. track
team, he ran in a meet in New Jer-
sey. There he won his heat in the
dashes only to discover that he had
run 120 yards instead of 100; in the

next heat a check revealed that the |
distance was only 95 yards. A few

later in another meet a dog ran into
him during a race, and it had to be
re-run. But those things didn’t both-
er him: he won his events in both
meets.

A WISCONSIN woman sued her
husband for divorce because he
bought only one season's ticket to
the Milwaukee Braves games, and
wouldn’t take her with him when
he attended.

THE PITCHER for Cathedral High School momentarily lost his control
during a game, and his pitch hit the ground in front of the plate. The over-
anxious batter swung at the bouncing ball, connected and drove in the

winning run.

Motoring Terms

Vary In USA
And England

It seems funny, but British and
American motorists have different
words for the same things on their
cars and other motoring terms. Just
in case some non-British folks are
planning a trip to that island, the
Esso News has devised this little
test.

In Column A you have ten Ameri-
can terms, and in column LB, you
have 11 British expressions. Your
job is to match them up by placing
the number of the expression in Col-
umn B in front of its counterpart in
Column A.

Score 10 for each corect answer.
(Answers are printed below.) If you
score between 70 and 100, by all
means, go to England; between 50
or 60, better study a little first; be-
low 50, stay at home.

Here’s How News

Did you hear that the word
NEWS came from the first letters
of the points of the compass,
North, East, West, and South?
There is no authority for such
an idea. "News” is merely the
plural of "new”’ and means new
things. Five hundred years ago it

was pronounced in two syllables and
written newes, and sometimes newys.

Edison, Great Inventor,
Had Humble Beginning

It was in the summer of 1862 that a boy in his early teens appeared at a
Detroit building bearing the sign FREE PRESS.

"I want to see the editor,” he told

"He’s busy,” was the reply.

the receptionist.

"But I have important business with him,” insisted the visitor.

Something about the newcomer
caused the receptionist to heed his
words, and he disappeared into an

inner office. A few moments later
he was back. "The editor will see
you now.”

Inside the visitor saw two men;

immediately he stated his business.

"I’m Tom Edison. I live in Fort
Huron, and I sell newpapers, candy
and other things on the train be-
tween home and Detroit. On the
train I publish a newspaper called
"The Weekly Herald’. I have been

printing 300 copies, but I could sell

a thousand if I had the paper on
which to print them.”
"You want us to supply you?”

me of the men asked.

"Yes, sir; I will pay you as soon
as I sell them.”

So they let him have the paper he
needed. On the train young Tom Edi-
son had a second-hand press and
some type, and he had been publish-
ing his newspaper with these. He
had become the reporter, pressman,
editor, publisher and newsdealer of
the first newspaper ever to be pub-
lished on a moving train.

At every stop, Tom would jump
off and sell his papers for three
cents apiece to the persons waiting
to board the train and to others
in the station

But he knew that if he wanted to
increase sales he would have _ to
work harder. He persuaded the rail-
road’s telegraph operator at Fort
Huron to wire ahead to other sta-

posted the bulletins on

‘Wrong Way Wind’ Upsets Island's

Composure; Some Damage Wrought

For a number of days - specifi-
cally those few that closed Octo-
ber and the first five that opened
November - residents of Aruba
fell victim to a very uncommon
happening hereabouts. The wind
changed direction and then picked
up a steady velocity and maintained
it for a rather lengthy period.

Throughout the major portion of
the world the average person pays
little heed to the wind unless it
sumes unnaturally large propor-
tions. Other than that the wind can

swing to any direction it chooses
without the slightest notice from
anyone. Not so in Aruba, however.

When the Trade Winds that con-
stantly blow out of the east vary
the slightest degree it is almost as
if something tragic had befallen the
island. Aruba and its people are
tuned for one-way-living with a one-
way-wind.

With the end of October the wind
started to shift. It swung a com-
plete 180 degrees and until Nov. 5
blew out of the west. Everything
shifted with it and went the other
way; everything, that is, except the
poor divi divi tree. So accustomed
is it to one-way-living that it just
couldn't bring itself around to a
change. The smoke blew the wrong
way, the flags blew the wrong way,
the cool rooms were on the usually
hot side of the house, rains came out
of the west and the island’s beaches
the normally calm south and
southwest sides took a terrific lacing

| while the usually active breakers no
longer rocked into the stoney clifts
of the east and north shores.

Shores Pounded

Havoc was raised on the shores.
Breakers mounting to heights of 10
and 15 feet pounded the shores from
California Light to Colorado Point.
Malmok’s jagged coastline drew
many spectators who were fascinated
by the antics of the pounding waves’
leaping sprays. Palm Beach took its
share of the beating. Waves raced
up the sloping sand banks and when
the receded left behind all sorts of
ugly debris mar an otherwise
sautiful beach. Fortunately nature
very often has ways of cleaning up
her own mess and not too long after
the wind returned to its rightful di-
rection, the sun, rain and normal
tides had once again cleared the

to

area and gave back to Aruba its
beautiful Palm Beach.

Coming up the south shore, the
boulevard along Oranjestad’s water-
front market was torn up in spots.
Water inundated the flats south of
Sabaneta and San Nicolas. San Ni-
colas Harbor also experienced mo-
ments of anxiety. Tanker travel in
and out the harbor was made more
difficult by winds buffeting the big
ships from the stern instead of head
on. The tricky winds and tides claim-
ed one ship Nov. 4. The MS Adrias
was hung up on some coral coming
|through the West Entrance. Her
grief was only momentary, however,
and she was soon freed to deliver
her cargo to Lago’s stills,

Gusts Up To 30 MPH

It was the consensus of opinion
that a wind out of the west had
never before hit Aruba with such
velocity. It averaged about 15 miles
an hour and hit gusts of 30 miles
an hour. Some say the spell was re-
miniscent of a period in 1932. Others

£ the '32 incident couldn’t com-
pare with the weather of two weeks
ago.

Finally Hurricane Greta, who

floundered some 250 miles north of
Puerto Rico, and rightly or wrong-
ly was blamed for Aruba’s weather,
blew herself out to the Atlantic
Ocean. In so doing the normal, cool
15-mile-an-hour Trade Winds took
up their usual position and once
again crossed Aruba from the east.

And with all the crazy wind-do-

generous amount of
rain, lightening and thunder. Al-
though no record, the 7.7 inches
that fell during October was next
best to the record October fall of
9.19 recorded in 1954.

The rain was plentiful, however,
and afforded Aruba the opportunity
of putting on a green blanket. This
she did and, as always, there are
those who come out with the in-
evitable: "Aruba is greener today
than ever before.” Be that as it may
- it’s just a matter of opinion - Aru-
ba is green, it rained enough to re-
pl h the lakes in Santa Cruz and
set to running a couple of the is-
land’s normally dried-up streams.
And it looks as if it will continue to
rain a wee bit more. Already over
three inches have been downed on
Aruba's green carpet.

marks the 17th consecutive year
that Lago has given its employees
an additional contribution.

Also of great importance to many
employee-participants in the Lago

that a withdrawal may be made of
two-thirds of the extra contribu-

tion without restriction under
normal administrative rules. In re-
cognition of employees’ expressed
desires to have additional money

during the holidays, a special Christ-

apart from the normal administra-
tive rules governing withdrawals.
For the first time, participants in
the Lago Thrift Fund regardless of
whether they are eligible for a with-
drawal or not, may make a with-
drawal up to two-thirds of the total
additional contribution.

In order to facilitate this new op-
tional withdrawal, employees must
announce their intentions to the Ac-

to all participants Dec. 1, must be
filled out indicating the employees’
desires and returned not later than
Dec. 6. The withdrawal will be avail-
able Dec. 13 and 14 in plenty of time
for Christmas expenditures.

THIS MAY seem like jumping the season just a bit, but nevertheless

Christmas cover through the Aruba Philatelic Society.

esaki ta un portret di Sint Nicolaas cu lo saluda esnan cu cumpra e

Santa and St. Nicolaas
Form Philatelic Covers

Indiana may have its Santa Claus,
but Aruba has its St. Nicolaas, and
stamp collectors all over the world
will know about if the plans of the
Aruba Philatelist Society go through
as expected.

Going into the St. Nicolaas post
office on Christmas Eve will be 2000
specially designed envelopes—’’cov-
ers” to the stamp collector—bearing
the cheerful face of the jolly old
gentleman himself and the words
"Greeting from Santa Claus at St.
Nicolaas, Aruba, Netherlands Antil-
les.” The illustration and the words
will be printed in a holiday red.

The idea belongs to the local
stamp club. They decided that the
proximity of such a name deserved
mention, so they devised the cover
and advertised in stamp journals in
the states that the covers were
available. Already orders for more
than 1000 have poured in, one from a
man in the Gilbert Islands in the
middle of the Pacific Ocean. Re-
quests from practically every state
in the United States and every pro-
vince of Canada have arrived, and
many from Europe.

Local residents who are stamp
collectors or who want to send a
Christmas cover to friends can ar-
range for it by addressing Aruba
Philatelic Society, P. O. Box 513,
Lago Colony, and enclosing 50 c.
for each cover, or Fls. 2.00 for five,

Plans Readied for Aruba Hotel

Miami Architect
Visits Aruba Cite

The swank resort hotel planned
for Aruba is closer than ever to
reality. After conferring with Aru-
ba business and government people
who are backing the project, ar-
chiteect Morris Lapidus has an-
nounced that ground clearing at
the Palm Beach site would begin
immediately.

Thus the first step will be taken
in the biggest project yet under-
taken on the island to attract in-
creasing tourist trade, a source of
tremendous revenue throughout the
Caribbean area.

According to Mr. Lapidus’ pre-
dictions the building—the Aruba
Caribbean Hotel—will be finished
before Jan. 1, 1958. Two con-
tracts will be let for the job: one
for foundation and one for construc-
tion. He believes that the rock bot-
tom just below the sand at Palm
Beach will be an excellent base for
the foundation.

The cost of the entire project is
about Fis. 3,000,000. To raise the
money a corporation was formed in
which the government, which put
up half the money, is represented.
Sale of shares of stock to the public
will account for the remainder of
the capital. Deputy Oscar Henriquez
has revealed that Fils. 50,000 in
shares has already been sold locally,
and said that when construction
gets underway, sales of shares will
increase.

Mr. Lapidus, who designed many
of Miami’s big beach hotels, sub-
mitted preliminary sketches of the
hotel and its related buildings to the
Aruba government in June. Some
changes were recommended, and
final plans were completed in Sep-
tember.

As plans now stand the hotel will
be of contemporary design, adapted
to Aruba’s climatic conditions. It
will have 120 rooms and six suites.
In addition to a dining room, the
facilities will include a_ cocktail
lounge, coffee shop, night club,
swimming pool, barbecue area, and
a small yacht pier. All indoor areas
will be air conditioned.

The architect hopes that bids for
the construction can be requested
by March, 1957.

| Extra Contribution |

(Continued from page 1)
drawal, if used, will not be counted
as a withdrawal for purposes of de-
termining eligibility for withdrawal
under the normal administrative
rules. If no withdrawal is made, the
entire sum will be credited to the
employee’s account under ordinary
handling.

This year the Lago Thrift Plan
had, as of Sept. 30, 100 per cent
participation. And more than 90 per
cent of these are depositing 10 per

cent - the maximum allowed - of
their monthly earnings. The extra
contribution is in addition to the

company’s regular monthly contri-
bution to employee’s savings ac-
counts.

The company also announced that
employees who participated in the
plan Oct. 1, 1956, but cease partici-
pating for any reason prior to Sept.
30, 1957, will receive a _ pro-rated
additional contribution based upon
the length of time they participated

An employee paid Fils. 400 a
month who deposits 10 per cent of
his monthly earnings in his thrift
account will accumulate a total of
Fls. 480 in one year. With the com-
pany contributing 79 cents for each
guilder he saved plus Fls. 25, Lago’s
additional contribution to this em-
ployee’s account will total Fls. 404.20
or eight per cent of his total earn-
ings.

The Fils. 800 a month earner that
contributed 10 per cent to the thrift
fund accumlates a total of Fls. 960
in one year. At 79 cents on the
guilder, the company’s additional
contribution will be Fils. 783.40 -
Fils. 758.40 plus Fis. 25

How To Win Customers And Sell Esso

Working on the sound principle that it’s not enough
to sell a motorist gas, check the oil and send him on
his way, Lago’s Marketing Division is currently ac-
quainting the island’s Esso dealers with some Esso
techniques for improved customer relations and in-
creased sales.

Acting as professor of salesmanship and station ope-
ration is John B. Crowley of the Delaware, Maryland
and District of Columbia Division of Esso Standard
Oil. He is currently finishing up a six-week assignment
developed by Lago and his company. His job with Esso
is salesman supervisor; the men who work for him
do the same job in the States that he has done here.

Mr. Crowley spent a week working with the dealers
and men in each of the island’s six stations. His aim
was to go far beyond the mere selling of gas and oil.
What he sought to do -- and did with great success, ac-
cording to the dealers themselves -- was to acquaint
them with what other Esso products are, what they
can do, and how to use them. Everyone in the station,
lubrication man, island man or manager, has a full
knowledge of all accessories offered for sale.

His ideas for pushing various items to stimulate

de Windt.

THERE IS a good way and a better way
to do everything in a service station, even
-- or especially -- the bookkeeping. Here
Mr. Crowley gives a tip to Miss Mathilda

sales have already borne fruit. In one station, supplies
of motor cleaner, exhaust deflectors and upper motor
lubricants were sold out in two days. Also coming in
for examination and recommendation by the expert
were office procedures and good housekeeping in the
stations.

But Marketing feels that the most enduring good to
come from Mr. Crowley’s stay is the fact that he is
coaching dealers to coach their own employees in sales
technique and smooth operation. By this the extra
bit of service and interest in a customer’s needs will
become a continuing tradition here.

Two other items have been introduced to the local
stations in the wake of Mr. Crowley’s visit. One is a
commission system which provides rewards for the
station employee who does a good selling job; the otker
is the Mystery Motorist campaign. A motorist, un-
known to the station personnel, will visit the stations
from time to time, and where he finds special courtesy,
friendliness and service, he will distribute cash prizes.

The stations Mr. Crowley visited were Frank Croes’,
A.M. Arends’, J. Oduber’s, Viana’s, Scholten’s and
Ecury’s.

NADA TA mucho chikito pa worde gecheck, y
esaki ta inclui un wiper di windshield. Bon negoshi
ta dicta cu un atendiente di stacion di servicio in-
forma e-cliente ora el tin mester di un wiper nobo.

The last days of October and the first few that ushered in November
will long be remembered. For during that period of this year, 1956, the
wind blew the ’wrong way’. Instead of coming out of the east it swung
180 degrees and blew for all it was worth from out of the west. The
crazy, mixed-up wind not only completely perplexed the one-way divi-
divi trees, but bothered the island’s entire population normally keyed
strictly to one way living. Wind from the opposite direction was just
not natural and as can be seen in the pictures on this page caused a

Amateur Fight
Tourney Planned
For Sport Park

Last year’s enormously successful
amateur boxing tournament has
prompted the Lago Sport Park
Board to arrange a similiar event
|for January. An estimated 10,000
boxing buffs watched the three
nghts of fights last year.

Entry forms must be filled out
and submitted before Dec. 22. Blanks
|may be obtained from any member
of the Lago Sport Park Board or at
the Sport Park, and can be returned
to the same sources when completed.

Definite scheduling of the fights
must await final registration but it
is believed that a record number of
amateurs will participate. If this is
so then probably there will be more
than three nights of bouts.

All weight divisions will be re-
presented. For guidance, here are
listed the classifications and the
weight limits for each:

Flyweight: up to 118 pounds.

Bantamweight: 118-128 pounds

Lightweight: 128-135 pounds
Welterweight: 135-147 pounds
Middleweight: 147-160 pounds
‘ Light heavyweight: 160 - 175
| pounds
Heavyweight: 175 pounds and
over.

The forms will be available short-
ly. Complete instructions as to mi-
nimum age of participants and
other considerations are on the form.

EXCEPT FOR one little detail,
Paul Kravitz might put in his claim
as track’s Hard Luck Champ. As a
member of the Columbus, N. Y. track
team, he ran in a meet in New Jer-
sey. There he won his heat in the
dashes only to discover that he had
run 120 yards instead of 100; in the

next heat a check revealed that the |
distance was only 95 yards. A few

later in another meet a dog ran into
him during a race, and it had to be
re-run. But those things didn’t both-
er him: he won his events in both
meets.

A WISCONSIN woman sued her
husband for divorce because he
bought only one season's ticket to
the Milwaukee Braves games, and
wouldn’t take her with him when
he attended.

THE PITCHER for Cathedral High School momentarily lost his control
during a game, and his pitch hit the ground in front of the plate. The over-
anxious batter swung at the bouncing ball, connected and drove in the

winning run.

Motoring Terms

Vary In USA
And England

It seems funny, but British and
American motorists have different
words for the same things on their
cars and other motoring terms. Just
in case some non-British folks are
planning a trip to that island, the
Esso News has devised this little
test.

In Column A you have ten Ameri-
can terms, and in column LB, you
have 11 British expressions. Your
job is to match them up by placing
the number of the expression in Col-
umn B in front of its counterpart in
Column A.

Score 10 for each corect answer.
(Answers are printed below.) If you
score between 70 and 100, by all
means, go to England; between 50
or 60, better study a little first; be-
low 50, stay at home.

Here’s How News

Did you hear that the word
NEWS came from the first letters
of the points of the compass,

There is no authority for such
an idea. "News” is merely the
plural of "new”’ and means new
things. Five hundred years ago it

was pronounced in two syllables and
written newes, and sometimes newys.

WORLD'S GREATEST INVENTORS-

Edison, Great Inventor,
Had Humble Beginning

It was in the summer of 1862 that a boy in his early teens appeared at a
Detroit building bearing the sign FREE PRESS.

"I want to see the editor,” he told

"He’s busy,” was the reply.

the receptionist.

"But I have important business with him,” insisted the visitor.

Something about the newcomer
caused the receptionist to heed his
words, and he disappeared into an

inner office. A few moments later
he was back. "The editor will see
you now.”

Inside the visitor saw two men;

immediately he stated his business.

"I’m Tom Edison. I live in Fort
Huron, and I sell newpapers, candy
and other things on the train be-
tween home and Detroit. On the
train I publish a newspaper called
"The Weekly Herald’. I have been

printing 300 copies, but I could sell

a thousand if I had the paper on
which to print them.”
"You want us to supply you?”

me of the men asked.

"Yes, sir; I will pay you as soon
as I sell them.”

So they let him have the paper he
needed. On the train young Tom Edi-
son had a second-hand press and
some type, and he had been publish-
ing his newspaper with these. He
had become the reporter, pressman,
editor, publisher and newsdealer of
the first newspaper ever to be pub-
lished on a moving train.

At every stop, Tom would jump
off and sell his papers for three
cents apiece to the persons waiting
to board the train and to others
in the station

But he knew that if he wanted to
increase sales he would have _ to
work harder. He persuaded the rail-
road’s telegraph operator at Fort
Huron to wire ahead to other sta-

posted the bulletins on
