Safety at Lago Topic
For Ernesti Address

The anatomy of a good safety program and its value to mangement

and employees was

plored by Mechanical Department Division Su-

perintendent G. Ernesti at an industrial relations conference in Pana-

ma Sept. 20.
Involved in safety

To make these
points, Mr. Ernes-

ibed to the
Lago’s

experience in safe
ty work. ’'Lago’s
policy is that

all take J

over
aid,
en when safety
objectives are in
conflict with other
objectives. It is
our constant concern that installa-
tions, tools and equipment be main-
tained properly to insure safe ope-
rations, that unsafe conditions be
eliminated, that employees be pro-
perly instructed and eive helpful
information towards accident pre-
vention.”

Further,” Mr. Ernesti said, "we
consider safety as a part of every
job and it is the duty of each indi-
vidual to make his own job safe as

well as to eliminate hazards at all
times and places.”
Safety at Lago for a new em-

ployee begins with his first day on
the job when he has an interview
with the Safety Division and is
handed a Manual of Safe Practices.
That is only the first step in the
safety indoctrination. ""Next,” con-
tinued Mr. Ernesti,
the job, lined up with what he has
to do and issued safety equipment
as required. Subsequently, in about
a month, the new employee returns
to the Safety Division for a four
hour s on on the specific uses of
safety equipment and accident pre-
vention

He then outlined how Lago seeks

about safety by investigating each
accident and near miss. These in-

vestigations seek to determine the

cause of the mishap and whether,
by revising regulations, adding

equipment or establishing new pro-
cedures, the cause can be removed.
Lago safety men will also find out
if there is human carelessness
volved. Information gleaned from
accident investigations is made up
into a report and circulated to a
Management Safety Committee and
a Mechanical Department Safety
Committee.
Safety Interest Promoted

"In order to keep our men moti-
vated in the interest of accident pre-
vention our supervisors give short
five-minute talks to their men once
each week. These talks result in
two-way communication where the
employee has an opportunity of
stating his own views on safety.

"Also the Safety Division edits
for distribution throughout the plant
to every employee two publications:
the Safety News Letter, which high-
lights improper or unsafe work
practices and offers helpful inform-
ation for working safely; and the
Accident Bulletin, a special issue in
which a serious accident or a near-
miss is reported, its cause explained
and preventive measures highlighted
similar cases.”

That these measures--and others--
Lago takes to promote safety have
borne fruit is indicated, Mr. Er-
nesti told the Panama Conference,
by our steady progress in the Na-
tional Safety Council Contest stand-
ings. In every year since 1951, Lago’s
frequency rate has been well below
the group average, and in that time,
Lago finished third once, second
three times and first once. Through

In making the presentation Mr.

was in honor of Mr. Harrod’s long
and faithful service on the Nether-

the part he played in aiding the de-
velopment of Aruban workers and
the Aruban community.

On hand at the presentation and
also a guest speaker at the club’s
luncheon was Mechanical Depart-
ment Superintendent G. L. MacNutt.

Mr. Harrod began his over four

With the exception of a brief milit-
ary leave of absence he worked at
the Illinois plant until May, 1929
when he transferred to Aruba as a

August, 1933 he became an operator

Two Local Athletes Study In U.S.

Two Aruba youths are currently
change of climate and a change of d
came without asking; the third wit
and one that will have a definite
morrow.

For the two young men, L. F. (Roy) van Putten and Charles Pon-

son are currently ankle-deep in falli

delightful Massachusetts fall
weather while pursuing studies in|
physical education at Springfield

College. In four years to come, or
approximately 1960, the two youths
will return to Aruba with diplomas
in hand prepared to develop a full
program of physical education for
the island’s youth.

Athletes van Putten and Ponson
went to the United States Sept. 19
to begin their college terms under
government scholarships recently
set up to develop physical education
instructors to teach in Aruba.
ernment financed, the scholarships
are sponsored by the Aruba Sport
Union.

Both men are well known in Aru-
ba sports circles. Mr. van Putten,

Gov-

who was employed at Lago as a
clerk in the Process Department -
Utilities, attained ranking as a

weightlifter and also as an organiz-
or of cycling events. He was also
president of the Aruba Athletic and
Cycle Association. Mr. Ponson
perhaps one of the best track and
field men in Aruba’s current crop
of youthful athletes. He first drew
recognition in the now-defunct Is-
land-Wide Interscholastic Track and
Field meet of 1953. As a stu-
dent at Juliana School, he establish-
ed himself as a high jumper and
dash man. He quickly became a
crowd-pleaser with his straight-on
approach to the high bar and tre-
mendous spring. He was also a very
popular competitor in both the Lago
Sport Park Olympiads and the Aru-
ba Sport Union meets.
Middleweight Champion

Mr. van Putten annexed the mid-
dleweight championship at the Lago
Sport Park tourneys of 1954 and
1955. His best weights, established

with athletics drew him into con-

year, Mr. and Mrs. Comer, both phy-
sical education graduates of Spring-

Mr. van Putten of the courses of-

At Colorado Point, Caracas

ARUBA ESSO NEWS

Lago, Creole Work on Developing
Tropic Fuel In Gas Volatility Tests

Out at Colorado Point not long
ago there were some strange go-
ings-on. Cars, some old and de-
crepit, some looking as if they had
no father or mother, some shabbily
respectable, were seen rolling around
a prescribed course, one following
another, occasionally stopping, oOc- |
casionally accelerating.

Every now and again, a man with |
a clipboard and sunglasses---badges
of the well-equipped engineer---noted
things down with a pencil and dis-
patched his drivers on their circuits.

What it all meant was that a
serious and high-minded research
problem was being solved, or at
least, a solution was being sought
for.

Various cars of various ages have
what engineers term varying volatil-
ity tolerance. This is the point when
liquid gasoline becomes vapor at a
given temperature. The circumstan-
ces of volatilizing affects the car |
operation.

Test Gasolines Built

What the tests sought to deter-
mine was an average kind of gaso-
line good for the maximum number
of cars or good enough to make
happy the greatest number of car
owners. As a starting point Lago
and Creole (the tests were begun in
Caracas in July) built a number of
test gasolines with the components
varying in each. Next a list of cars
to be tested was drawn up which
included as many makes and ages
and motor types as possible without
using every car in sight; the roster
was in effect a cross section of the
car population.

When a day dawned when the
wind lessened, TSD’s Ear] Baker,
who directed the project and his
drivers, W. M. Hager, O. L. Lisot
and H. D. Kutz, said the tests were
on. The prime reason for the ab-
sence of wind was that it would act
as a cooling agent and thus invali-
date the under-the-hood temperature
readings that were an important
part of the tests.

| was carefully

The thermocouple that measured
the heat was the only "gadget’
used in the tests. For other results
the drivers relied on touch and
sound and feel, faculties they re-
fined to a considerable degree dur-
ing the testing period.

45 Minute Tests

The Lago tests began at the gar-
age where the test cars were as-
sembled and fueled. They were then
driven to the Colorado Point prov-
ing grounds and put through their
paces. Each car was tested for
about 45 minutes during which driv-
ing conditions of the city and coun-
try were simulated, plus stops and
starts, idling and acceleration.

Results were nothing short of
spectacular. Some cars purred like
showroom numbers, shedding years
like a duck sheds water; others
clattered. Some bucked, one died.
But the drivers learned something
from each and sent the back to the

| garage for a different fuel.

Every aspect of the car’s behavior
observed and noted;

whether idling was smooth, whether |
the engine was heating, whether ac-
celeration was erratic, anything in

|

short that could be attributable to
the gasoline. Also taken into con-
sideration was the grade. In Lago,
where mostly older cars were used,
the tests were on the flat; in Vene-
zuela, there were newer models, and
the tests were run through some

| hills.

Gasoline Market Growth

Prompting the tests in the first
place were two major factors. One
is that the number of cars in use in
Latin America has grown so enorm
ously in the past 10 or 15 years that
a vast market has been created.
The other is that car operation in
the tropics demands tailored gaso-
lines radically different from those
used in more temperate areas.

From here the data accumulated
during the testing will go to Esso
Research where, studied in con-
nection with certain marketing
factors, it will be turned through
the alchemy of imagration, plus
hard work plus more tests into spe-
cifications for a new gasoline--pos-
sibly--that is economical to produce
and capable of giving maximum
satisfaction to the most number of
cars in the tropic regions.

Pero e corredornan a sinja algo for

Cada aspecto di comportacion di

Trinidad Building
Adult Workshop

Trinidad has allocated $100,000
BWI for 1956 to carry out the first
stage of construction of an Adult
Workshop at St. Ann’s, including
workshop, class rooms and a resi-
dential center to accommodate 40
persons. The initial operation will be
production of posters, charts, pam-
phlets, film strips and other material
to support any campaign on health,
agriculture or literacy. Courses for
instructors in adult education will
also be conducted there.

Three Lago Men
Taught Life-Saving

Lago employees who work on the waterfront now
have another safeguard, thanks to a special life-
saving course arranged by the Safety Division.
Three men were selected to undergo an intensive
30-hour program designed to train them to conduct
lifesaving and to acquaint them with all aspects
of water safety.

The three were Francisco Wernet from the Safe-
ty Division and A. Semeleer and C. A. Helliger
from the Carpenter Craft. The latter two work on
the piledriver, and are there in a position not only
to save themselves should they fall overboard, but
to come to the aid of their fellow workers.

The course, conducted by Joseph Halper, a Sum-
mer Recreation Program instructor, was equivalent
to the senior life saving course. Successful comple-
tion qualified the three to conduct the swimming
tests for new employees whose duties require them
to work on or near the waterfront.

Stressed by Mr. Halper were these facets of life
saving: how to go into the water to give help, how
to approach a victim without allowing his panic to
interfere with rescue work, the proper carrying
technique in the water, the carrying out of the
water and artificial respiration.

1) A STUDENT demonstrates the proper life-saver’s

jump into deep water, used from a boat, pier or

bridge. When he hits the water the rescuer will close

his arms and legs and keep his head above water
so he won’t lose sight of his victim.

Salbamento di Bida
Sinjana Trahadornan

Empleadonan di Lago cu ta traha na canto di
awa awor tin un otro medio di proteccion, gracias
sea un curso special den salbamento di bida orga-
niz4 door di Safety Division. Tres homber a worde
selecté pa tuma un programa intensivo di 30 ora
designa pa sinja nan salbamento di bida y tur as-
pectonan di seguridad den awa.

E tres tabata Francisco Wernet di Safety Divi-
sion y A. Semeleer y C. A. Helliger di Carpenter
Craft. E ultimo dos ta traha ariba piledriver y co-
mo tal ta den posicion no solamente pa salba nan
mes si nan cai over di bordo, pero tambe pa duna
auxilio na nan companjeronan di trabao.

E curso, conduci door di Joseph Halper, un in-
structor di Summer Recreation Program, tabata
equivalente na e curso major di salbamento di bida.
Completacion cu exito ta duna e tres derecho pa
tuma e testnan di landamento pa empleadonan nobo
kende nan trabao ta exigi pa nan traha ariba of
na canto di awa.

Sr. Halper a acentua e aspectonan aki di salba-
mento di bida: com drenta awa pa duna auxilio,
com acerca un victima sin permiti su panico pa
stroba e trabao di auxilio, e propio modo di carga
un victima den awa, sacamento for di den awa y
respiracion artificial.

UN STUDIANTE TA demonstra e propio manera

di bula den awa pa salba un hende, cual por worde

usa for di den boto, pier of brug. Ora e dal den awa

e salbador ta cerra su braza y pianan y tene su

cabez ariba awa asina cu el no ta perde su yictima
for di vista.

2) HERE THE rescuer keeps the victim

from hampering rescue attempts by hand-

fighting him off. Often a person in trouble

will panic and his resulting struggles only
make rescue more difficult.

4) THE RESCUER uses the
water’s natural buoyancy to lift
the victim to his shoulders.

E SALBADOR ta usa e forza flo-
tante natural di awa pa hiza e
victima ariba su schouder.

AKI E SALBADOR ta detene e victima di
stroba esfuerzonan di salba bida door di
bringe’le cu su man. Hopi vez un persona
den trobbel ta haya un panico y su lucha
ta haci trabao di salbamento mas dificil.

3) THIS IS THE cross-chest carry used in
bringing a victim to shore. By using this
technique the rescuer not only can keep a
firm grip on the victim, but also makes it
impossible for the victim to struggle.

ESAKI TA E manera, cu braza over e pe-
cho, pa hiba un victimo na strand. Door di
usa e tekniek aki e salbador no solamente
por tene e victimo duro, pero ta haci’e im-
posibel pa e victimo bringa cu ne.

5) THE EASIEST method is the
fireman’s carry; the victim is
slung over the rescuer’s shoulders.

E METODO MAS FACIL ta e
modo aki den cual e victima ta
worde benta ariba schouder.

6) ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION is administered.

Used here is the arm lift, back pressure technique,

applied 12 times minute. No knowledge of water

safety is complete without thorough acquaintance
with artificial respiration methods.

RESPIRACION ARTIFICIAL ta worde adminis-

tra. Esun munstra aki ta e sistema di pomp aire

den pulmon pa medio di movecion di braza, cual ta

worde aplica 12 vez pa minuut. Respiracion artifi-
cial ta necsario pa seguridad den awa.

Marciano Hernandez, Dominico Marquez, Luis Giel,
Alberto Penja, Carmelo Lacle, Jacobo
Kenneth Williams. Working with them as advisor
was LVS instructor Glenroy Straughn

A crowd of 500--1946 graduates,
friends--attended the reunion, which took the form
of a dance party at the Aruba Social Club Sept. 15.
The Lluvia Musical, leading conjunto in the Antilles,
provided the music. The reunion was a complete
success, judging fom appearances in these pictures.

Among those on hand was General Manager F. E
Griffin who, in a few remarks, commented on the
spirit which initiated the reunion, and praised the
class members for supporting the idea and coming
out to meet each other socially.

In the way of a response, the originator of the
idea, Fernando Leerdam, observed that the Class of
’46 would continue in its efforts to be cfficient em-
ployees and good citizens

Even nature cooperated for the affair and sup-
plied a full moon and a cool night to add to the
enjoyment.

No plans have yet been made for the future.
Many in the class want to make their anniversary

known Chief Executive.
Born in Hillsboro, New Hamp-

shire, on Nov. 23, 1804, he was edu-
cated at Bowdoin College, in Maine.
Elected a member of the New Hamp-
shire House of Representatives at
the unusually early age of 25, he
served as Speaker of the House in
1831-1832.

After four years in Congress, he
was elected to the United States
Senate in 1837, being the youngest
member of that body, which in-
cluded such men as Webster, Clay,
Buchanan, Calhoun and Benton.

In 1842 he resigned from the Se-
nate and retired to private life, de-
clining several public offices tender-
ed him. He engaged in public debate

question, advocating the constitu-
tional right of that institution.

He served as an appointed briga-
dier in the volunteer army during
the Mexican War, leading his bri-
| gade in the battles of Contreras and
| Cherubusco.

Continuing his law practice after
the war, he was nominated for the
presidency on the 49th ballot in
1852, receiving an electoral majority
of 254 to 42 over General Scott.
The Missouri Compromise was re-
pealed during his administration as
14th President of the United States.
Other highlights of his term were
establishment of a treaty with Japan
and settlement of the Mexican
boundary disputes.

Failing renomination, he traveled
abroad for three years and _ then
lived in retirement at Concord,
where he died on Oct. 8, 1869. Who
was he?

Safety at Lago Topic
For Ernesti Address

The anatomy of a good safety program and its value to mangement

and employees was

plored by Mechanical Department Division Su-

perintendent G. Ernesti at an industrial relations conference in Pana-

ma Sept. 20.
Involved in safety

To make these
points, Mr. Ernes-

experience in safe
ty work. ’'Lago’s
policy is that

all take J

aid,
en when safety
objectives are in
conflict with other
objectives. It is
our constant concern that installa-
tions, tools and equipment be main-
tained properly to insure safe ope-
rations, that unsafe conditions be
eliminated, that employees be pro-
perly instructed and eive helpful
information towards accident pre-
vention.”

Further,” Mr. Ernesti said, "we
consider safety as a part of every
job and it is the duty of each indi-
vidual to make his own job safe as

well as to eliminate hazards at all
times and places.”
Safety at Lago for a new em-

ployee begins with his first day on
the job when he has an interview
with the Safety Division and is
handed a Manual of Safe Practices.
That is only the first step in the
safety indoctrination. ""Next,” con-
tinued Mr. Ernesti,
the job, lined up with what he has
to do and issued safety equipment
as required. Subsequently, in about
a month, the new employee returns
to the Safety Division for a four
hour s on on the specific uses of
safety equipment and accident pre-
vention

He then outlined how Lago seeks

about safety by investigating each
accident and near miss. These in-

vestigations seek to determine the

cause of the mishap and whether,
by revising regulations, adding

equipment or establishing new pro-
cedures, the cause can be removed.
Lago safety men will also find out
if there is human carelessness
volved. Information gleaned from
accident investigations is made up
into a report and circulated to a
Management Safety Committee and
a Mechanical Department Safety
Committee.
Safety Interest Promoted

"In order to keep our men moti-
vated in the interest of accident pre-
vention our supervisors give short
five-minute talks to their men once
each week. These talks result in
two-way communication where the
employee has an opportunity of
stating his own views on safety.

"Also the Safety Division edits
for distribution throughout the plant
to every employee two publications:
the Safety News Letter, which high-
lights improper or unsafe work
practices and offers helpful inform-
ation for working safely; and the
Accident Bulletin, a special issue in
which a serious accident or a near-
miss is reported, its cause explained
and preventive measures highlighted
similar cases.”

That these measures--and others--
Lago takes to promote safety have
borne fruit is indicated, Mr. Er-
nesti told the Panama Conference,
by our steady progress in the Na-
tional Safety Council Contest stand-
ings. In every year since 1951, Lago’s
frequency rate has been well below
the group average, and in that time,
Lago finished third once, second
three times and first once. Through

Two Local Athletes Study In U.S.

Two Aruba youths are currently
change of climate and a change of d
came without asking; the third wit
and one that will have a definite
morrow.

For the two young men, L. F. (Roy) van Putten and Charles Pon-

son are currently ankle-deep in falli

delightful Massachusetts fall
weather while pursuing studies in|
physical education at Springfield

College. In four years to come, or
approximately 1960, the two youths
will return to Aruba with diplomas
in hand prepared to develop a full
program of physical education for
the island’s youth.

Athletes van Putten and Ponson
went to the United States Sept. 19
to begin their college terms under
government scholarships recently
set up to develop physical education
instructors to teach in Aruba.
ernment financed, the scholarships
are sponsored by the Aruba Sport
Union.

Both men are well known in Aru-
ba sports circles. Mr. van Putten,

Gov-

who was employed at Lago as a
clerk in the Process Department -
Utilities, attained ranking as a

weightlifter and also as an organiz-
or of cycling events. He was also
president of the Aruba Athletic and
Cycle Association. Mr. Ponson
perhaps one of the best track and
field men in Aruba’s current crop
of youthful athletes. He first drew
recognition in the now-defunct Is-
land-Wide Interscholastic Track and
Field meet of 1953. As a stu-
dent at Juliana School, he establish-
ed himself as a high jumper and
dash man. He quickly became a
crowd-pleaser with his straight-on
approach to the high bar and tre-
mendous spring. He was also a very
popular competitor in both the Lago
Sport Park Olympiads and the Aru-
ba Sport Union meets.
Middleweight Champion

Mr. van Putten annexed the mid-
dleweight championship at the Lago
Sport Park tourneys of 1954 and
1955. His best weights, established

At Colorado Point, Caracas

ARUBA ESSO NEWS

Lago, Creole Work on Developing
Tropic Fuel In Gas Volatility Tests

Out at Colorado Point not long
ago there were some strange go-
ings-on. Cars, some old and de-
crepit, some looking as if they had
no father or mother, some shabbily
respectable, were seen rolling around
a prescribed course, one following
another, occasionally stopping, oOc- |
casionally accelerating.

Every now and again, a man with |
a clipboard and sunglasses---badges
of the well-equipped engineer---noted
things down with a pencil and dis-
patched his drivers on their circuits.

What it all meant was that a
serious and high-minded research
problem was being solved, or at
least, a solution was being sought
for.

Various cars of various ages have
what engineers term varying volatil-
ity tolerance. This is the point when
liquid gasoline becomes vapor at a
given temperature. The circumstan-
ces of volatilizing affects the car |
operation.

Test Gasolines Built

What the tests sought to deter-
mine was an average kind of gaso-
line good for the maximum number
of cars or good enough to make
happy the greatest number of car
owners. As a starting point Lago
and Creole (the tests were begun in
Caracas in July) built a number of
test gasolines with the components
varying in each. Next a list of cars
to be tested was drawn up which
included as many makes and ages
and motor types as possible without
using every car in sight; the roster
was in effect a cross section of the
car population.

When a day dawned when the
wind lessened, TSD’s Ear] Baker,
who directed the project and his
drivers, W. M. Hager, O. L. Lisot
and H. D. Kutz, said the tests were
on. The prime reason for the ab-
sence of wind was that it would act
as a cooling agent and thus invali-
date the under-the-hood temperature
readings that were an important
part of the tests.

| was carefully

The thermocouple that measured
the heat was the only "gadget’
used in the tests. For other results
the drivers relied on touch and
sound and feel, faculties they re-
fined to a considerable degree dur-
ing the testing period.

45 Minute Tests

The Lago tests began at the gar-
age where the test cars were as-
sembled and fueled. They were then
driven to the Colorado Point prov-
ing grounds and put through their
paces. Each car was tested for
about 45 minutes during which driv-
ing conditions of the city and coun-
try were simulated, plus stops and
starts, idling and acceleration.

Results were nothing short of
spectacular. Some cars purred like
showroom numbers, shedding years
like a duck sheds water; others
clattered. Some bucked, one died.
But the drivers learned something
from each and sent the back to the

| garage for a different fuel.

Every aspect of the car’s behavior
observed and noted;

whether idling was smooth, whether |
the engine was heating, whether ac-
celeration was erratic, anything in

|

short that could be attributable to
the gasoline. Also taken into con-
sideration was the grade. In Lago,
where mostly older cars were used,
the tests were on the flat; in Vene-
zuela, there were newer models, and
the tests were run through some

| hills.

Gasoline Market Growth

Prompting the tests in the first
place were two major factors. One
is that the number of cars in use in
Latin America has grown so enorm
ously in the past 10 or 15 years that
a vast market has been created.
The other is that car operation in
the tropics demands tailored gaso-
lines radically different from those
used in more temperate areas.

From here the data accumulated
during the testing will go to Esso
Research where, studied in con-
nection with certain marketing
factors, it will be turned through
the alchemy of imagration, plus
hard work plus more tests into spe-
cifications for a new gasoline--pos-
sibly--that is economical to produce
and capable of giving maximum
satisfaction to the most number of
cars in the tropic regions.

Gasoline di Test Traha

Loke e testnan tabata trata pa
determina tabata un sorto promedio
di gasoline bon pa e maximo canti-
dad di auto of bastante bon pa haci
mas tanto posible automovilista sa-
tisfecho. Como un punto di princi-
pio Lago y Creole (e testnan a cu-
minza na Caracas na Juli) a traha
algun gasoline di test cu componen-
te variando den cada un. Despues
nan a compila un lista di auto pa

en realidad e lista tabata un seccion
representativo di e poblacion di

Ora a yega un dia cu biento a

E "thermocouple” pa midi e ca-

den e testnan. Pa otro resultadonan,
e corredornan tabata confia ariba
gevoel y zonido, facultadnan cu
nan a rafina considerablemente du-
rante e testnan.

Testnan di 45 Minuut

E testnan di Lago a cuminza na
e garage unda e autonan a worde
arma y yen cu gasoline. Anto nan
a worde hiba pa e terreno di expe-
rimentacion na Colorado Point y

purba. Cada auto a worde getest co-
mo 45 minuut durante cual condi-
cionnan di corre auto den stad y
campo a worde simula, incluyendo
stops y starts, laga motor draai po-
co poco y aceleracion.

E resultadonan no tabata mucho
diferente di spectacular. Algun auto
tabata mescos cu nobo, tirando edad
abao mescos cu un pato ta benta
awa for di den su pluma; otro taba-
ta bati. Algun a danja y un a muri.
Pero e corredornan a sinja algo for
di cada un y a manda nan garage
pa diferente gasoline.

Cada aspecto di comportacion di
e auto a worde observa cuidadosa-
mente y nota; sea cu e draaimento
di motor tabata suave, si e motor
tabata cayenta, si e aceleracion ta-
bata erratico, en corto tur loke por
ta debi na e gasoline. E grado tambe
a worde tuma na consideracion. Na
Lago unda mayor parte autonan
mas bieuw a worde usd, e testnan
tabata ariba lugar flat; na Vene-
zuela tabatin modelonan mas nobo,
y e testnan a worde corri door di
algun cerrito.

Crecencia di Mercado

Dos factor grandi a orgina e test-
nan aki. Uno ta cu cantidad di auto-
nan na uso den Latino America a
erece asina enormemente den e ulti-
mo 10 of 15 anja cu un mercado vasto
a worde estableci. E otro ta cu ope-
racion di auto den tropico ta de-
manda gasolinenan’ special cu ta
radicalmente diferente for di esnan
usd den otro regionnan temperada.

For di aki e data acumula duran-

duna maximo satisfaccion na e can-
tidad mas grandi di autonan den
regionnan tropical.

Trinidad Building
Adult Workshop

Trinidad has allocated $100,000
BWI for 1956 to carry out the first
stage of construction of an Adult
Workshop at St. Ann’s, including
workshop, class rooms and a resi-
dential center to accommodate 40
persons. The initial operation will be
production of posters, charts, pam-
phlets, film strips and other material
to support any campaign on health,
agriculture or literacy. Courses for
instructors in adult education will
also be conducted there.

Three Lago Men
Taught Life-Saving

Lago employees who work on the waterfront now
have another safeguard, thanks to a special life-
saving course arranged by the Safety Division.
Three men were selected to undergo an intensive
30-hour program designed to train them to conduct
lifesaving and to acquaint them with all aspects
of water safety.

The three were Francisco Wernet from the Safe-
ty Division and A. Semeleer and C. A. Helliger
from the Carpenter Craft. The latter two work on
the piledriver, and are there in a position not only
to save themselves should they fall overboard, but
to come to the aid of their fellow workers.

The course, conducted by Joseph Halper, a Sum-
mer Recreation Program instructor, was equivalent
to the senior life saving course. Successful comple-
tion qualified the three to conduct the swimming
tests for new employees whose duties require them
to work on or near the waterfront.

Stressed by Mr. Halper were these facets of life
saving: how to go into the water to give help, how
to approach a victim without allowing his panic to
interfere with rescue work, the proper carrying
technique in the water, the carrying out of the
water and artificial respiration.

1) A STUDENT demonstrates the proper life-saver’s

jump into deep water, used from a boat, pier or

bridge. When he hits the water the rescuer will close

his arms and legs and keep his head above water
so he won’t lose sight of his victim.

Salbamento di Bida
Sinjana Trahadornan

Empleadonan di Lago cu ta traha na canto di
awa awor tin un otro medio di proteccion, gracias
sea un curso special den salbamento di bida orga-
niz4 door di Safety Division. Tres homber a worde
selecté pa tuma un programa intensivo di 30 ora
designa pa sinja nan salbamento di bida y tur as-
pectonan di seguridad den awa.

E tres tabata Francisco Wernet di Safety Divi-
sion y A. Semeleer y C. A. Helliger di Carpenter
Craft. E ultimo dos ta traha ariba piledriver y co-
mo tal ta den posicion no solamente pa salba nan
mes si nan cai over di bordo, pero tambe pa duna
auxilio na nan companjeronan di trabao.

E curso, conduci door di Joseph Halper, un in-
structor di Summer Recreation Program, tabata
equivalente na e curso major di salbamento di bida.
Completacion cu exito ta duna e tres derecho pa
tuma e testnan di landamento pa empleadonan nobo
kende nan trabao ta exigi pa nan traha ariba of
na canto di awa.

Sr. Halper a acentua e aspectonan aki di salba-
mento di bida: com drenta awa pa duna auxilio,
com acerca un victima sin permiti su panico pa
stroba e trabao di auxilio, e propio modo di carga
un victima den awa, sacamento for di den awa y
respiracion artificial.

UN STUDIANTE TA demonstra e propio manera

di bula den awa pa salba un hende, cual por worde

usa for di den boto, pier of brug. Ora e dal den awa

e salbador ta cerra su braza y pianan y tene su

cabez ariba awa asina cu el no ta perde su yictima
for di vista.

2) HERE THE rescuer keeps the victim

from hampering rescue attempts by hand-

fighting him off. Often a person in trouble

will panic and his resulting struggles only
make rescue more difficult.

4) THE RESCUER uses the
water’s natural buoyancy to lift
the victim to his shoulders.

E SALBADOR ta usa e forza flo-
tante natural di awa pa hiza e
victima ariba su schouder.

AKI E SALBADOR ta detene e victima di
stroba esfuerzonan di salba bida door di
bringe’le cu su man. Hopi vez un persona
den trobbel ta haya un panico y su lucha
ta haci trabao di salbamento mas dificil.

3) THIS IS THE cross-chest carry used in
bringing a victim to shore. By using this
technique the rescuer not only can keep a
firm grip on the victim, but also makes it
impossible for the victim to struggle.

ESAKI TA E manera, cu braza over e pe-
cho, pa hiba un victimo na strand. Door di
usa e tekniek aki e salbador no solamente
por tene e victimo duro, pero ta haci’e im-
posibel pa e victimo bringa cu ne.

5) THE EASIEST method is the
fireman’s carry; the victim is
slung over the rescuer’s shoulders.

E METODO MAS FACIL ta e
modo aki den cual e victima ta
worde benta ariba schouder.

6) ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION is administered.

Used here is the arm lift, back pressure technique,

applied 12 times minute. No knowledge of water

safety is complete without thorough acquaintance
with artificial respiration methods.

RESPIRACION ARTIFICIAL ta worde adminis-

tra. Esun munstra aki ta e sistema di pomp aire

den pulmon pa medio di movecion di braza, cual ta

worde aplica 12 vez pa minuut. Respiracion artifi-
cial ta necsario pa seguridad den awa.

1946 Class Holds Ten-Year Reunion

For the first time, a graduating class of
Vocational School held a reunion, and what a time
it turned out to be. The Class of 1946 was the group
with the idea, and credit for carrying it out must
go to a committee composed of Fernando Leerdam,
Marciano Hernandez, Dominico Marquez, Luis Giel,
Alberto Penja, Carmelo Lacle, Jacobo

Many in the class want to make their anniversary
celebration an annual affair, a fine tribute to the
their 10th anniversary was observed.

Bo por tin segur, sinembargo, cu

The meeting was half fun and
half busine: Dr. Robert Turfboer,
Lago’s industrial and mental hygiene
physician, and one of the founders
of the local AA chapter, presided
and introduced the guests.

the group a year ago by AA

He insisted that someone take a

meeting was filled with loud cries
of "No, no!”. But the joke was on
AA because the glasses contained

nothing but glass that appeared to
resemble whiskey.
