E. L. Wilkins ta mirando.

With the roar of furnaces stilled, the fiery glow of molten metal
faded, the Foundry closed its doors August 15 after 25 years of ser-
vice to the refinery and to the ships that serve the refinery. Long a
highly essential operation -- and filling an especially critical need
during the war years -- its function has finally been made obsolete by

changing conditions.

It was in September, 1931 that John F. Schnurr, then a carpenter,
was asked to set up a foundry operation, chiefly to fill a pressing need

bubble caps that are used by

hundreds in many of the refinery’s

tall towers. Cast iron stair treads
for the countless stairways on the
stills also were a frequent require-
ment, and there was an increasing
need for specialized castings needed
for the growing lake tanker fleet
that was hauling crude oil to the
infant refinery.

By 1937 operations had outgrown
the small building originally located
on what is now the site of the Lago
Commissary, and the greatly ex-
panded foundry and pattern shop
were set up in the present location
west of the Commissary. Late in
1942 Mr. Schnurr left Aruba and
was replaced as foreman by Hugo
McGibbon (In later years Mr.
Schnurr was to spend several years
teaching foundry practices in India
as part of the U. S. government’s
Point Four aid program.)

The Foundry’s work became of
extreme importance during the war,
when every old ship that could turn
a propeller was pressed into service
and when regular overhauls at ship
repair yards were usually an im-
possibility.

During the decade after the war
the refinery had less and less fre-
quent need for the Foundry’s ser-
vices, and the Shipyard, which kept
the Lake Fleet in repair and sup-
plied critical repair needs for ocean
tankers, supplied the principal busi-
ness. Time moved on and conditions
changed, however, and by 1954 it
was necessary to close up the Ship-
yard operation. Two factors brought
this about: pipelines were moving
erude oil from the fields to Amuay
Bay, on Paraguana Peninsula, where
large ocean tankers could pick it up
for transport to Aruba; at the same
time the many years of dredging on
the Lake Maracaibo sandbar had
finally opened up the lake to the
large ships, so that use of smaller

An outstanding feature of the
Foundry’s history has been its
long record for operating safely.
While the handling of molten
metals and heavy equipment had
substantial hazards, at closing
time August 15 the group had
not sustained a lost time accident
since January 21, 1942. Their
consciousness of safety and their
skills at their specialized jobs
were such that they passed the
last 13 and a half years without
a lost time injury.

ships of the Lake Fleet could no
longer be justified economically.
Without the Shipyard, and with the
refinery’s needs for castings being
reduced and now handled in other
ways, there is no longer any work
for the Foundry.

While it cannot always be done
when operations change, in this case
it was possible to find new jobs for
all the men on the Foundry staff.
One man goes to TSD-Engineering,
two to Carpenter and Paint, three
to Machinist, and the others will
enter the Mason & Insulator craft.
Since more than half of them had
worked together at the Foundry for
over 17 years, they will long remem-
ber their associations there.

Negotiations Are Completed

Shift Hours Cut
Contract Runs
To Mareh 1, ’°58

A seven-weeks period of nego-
tiations on a new Working Agree-
ment at Lago ended in the early
hours of Sunday, August 19 with
Lago Employee Council and man-
agement agreement on a wide
range of conditions affecting all
constituents of the LEC. An-
nouncements of the essential por-
tions of the agreement were made
simultaneously Monday afternoon
to supervisors and to district re-
presentatives, and details were
given to employees at the end of
the day.

Many of the changes become ef-

| fective September 1, while others go

into effect October 1, 1956 or
January 1, 1957.
Among the most important

changes are the reduction of hours
for shift workers from 48 to 45 or
44.8, with maintenance of earnings
including a shift differential of 22
cents; minor rate adjustments in
equivalent hourly rates among non-
shift employees and in Private Staff
Monthly rates, in order to keep a
similarity of base rates for equi-
valent levels of jobs; and, among
fixed-rate jobs, payment of a ser-
vice premium of from three to five
cents per hour for accumulated ser-
vice at intervals of five years on the
same job.

Favorable adjustments have been
made in other fields such as sick-
ness benefits, holiday pay, vacations,
overtime, layoff allowances and
others. Another area of agreement
covers changed rates for a variety
of specific job classifications, and
establishment of fixed increases for
acting assignments and promotions.
In addition, a number of improve-
ments in working conditions were
negotiated.

Important projects set up for
study by management included
means of providing improved an-
nuities through participation of em-

ployees, the establishment of a
scholarship program for Lago em-
ployees, and "in-plant feeding’ to
provide for purchase of hot food by
employees.

The largest single change -- re-
duction of shift hours -- will help
avoid the necessity of laying off up
to 100 Process employees who would
have been surplus if the 48-hour
week were continued; at the same
time it will result in additional job
openings in other departments that
have shift operations.

A new feature of the agreement
is its being a _ ’’closed-end” rather
than an open-end” contract of in-
definite duration, as was the pre-
vious agreement. The contract re-
mains in force until March 1, 1958,
with a provision that wages may be
discussed March 1, 1957 in light of
conditions then prevailing.

(Fuller detail of the negotiating re-
sults will be carried in the next issue.)

THE TRAGIC RESULT of just a moment of driving careless-
ness... Somebody stopped thinking for one split second, and the
cost came high: injury, disfigurement, death. Perhaps the driver
of this car was a careful one. Perhaps up to the moment of the
awful crash he was a sane, proper driver, obeying the laws of
the road, and the laws of common sense; perhaps he was an in-
nocent victim of another’s reckless acts. It really doesn’t matter.
All traffic injuries and deaths are useless sacrifices. A blood
bath has descended on streets and roads everywhere--including
Aruba--that can only be halted when every driver brings to his
car the certain knowledge that he is driving a deadly weapon,
an instrument that can in a moment shatter and kill. Speed
kills: slow down!

If you lose time from the job because of drinking...

If you have loss of memory for part of the drinking period

you’re on your way to becoming an alcoholic, according to Dr. Robert
Turfboer, Lago’s industrial and mental hygiene physician. He is sup-
ported by the United States Public Health Service, Yale University’s
Alcohol Studies Section, and other groups interested in fighting the
liquor problem

According to definition, an alcoholic is a person who drinks because
he has to, drinks when he has every reason not to. An alcoholic can-
not control the time or place or quantity of his drinking; he is a wreck,
physically, mentally and emotionally. An alcoholic is not just a drunk-
ard; he is a sick man.

Alcoholism is a grave problem. Private and government groups the
world over are working hard to educate the public to understand and
to correct the abuses of liquor which are ruining lives, wrecking homes
and costing businesses vast sums of money in lost time by alcoholic
employees.

Excessive drinking--alcoholism--is not limited to the United States,
or to any country; nor to age groups, nor to professions. It is every-
where. It is present here in Aruba.

Dr. Turfboer is greatly concerned with the problem, and has been
doing much good work to combat it. He was instrumental in organiz-

ing the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous, and has given medical
and counselling help to a number of problem drinkers. Still, with all
the work he and others have done in Aruba, new alcoholic cases come
to Dr. Turfboer at the rate of seven or eight a month.

In a study of the drinking patterns and habits of 80 alcoholics, Dr.
Turfboer has uncovered some significant facts: that rum was the
primary liquor; that half of the victims came voluntarily to him for
help; and that the average problem drinker in the group was 33 years
old and had been drinking for about 13 years and spent roughly 17%
of his wages for liquor.

He found too that the pattern of development of a problem drinker
here corresponded with patterns elsewhere. This pattern shows that
there are 13 general steps or stages in the downhill progress of a}
problem drinker. To a certain point the drinker can call a halt to his
drinking behavior. Past that point he becomes a compulsive drinker,
and cannot break away until he realizes he must have outside help
to stop. (See nearby box for the 13 steps.)

Where can help be found for the problem drinker? Here in Aruba,
as everywhere, it can come from several sources: medical care and
mental hygiene, such as Dr. Turfboer provides; from Alcoholics Ano-
nymous, in both their open or closed meetings, and from AA mem- |
bers working closely and sympathetically to those who are still drink- |
ing heavily. There are other ways too.

In the next article, all of these will be explored in some detail.

men are bestowing on their pride and joy: a model
of the new Administration Building soon
erected. From left: Henry Euler, John Leahy, War-
ren Michael and Jim Wayne. Mr. Leahy, who is no
longer in Aruba, constructed the model on his own
time. Picture at top shows preliminary work being
done on the building site in front of the Training

Building.

Work Starts on Office Building
For Meehanieal, IR and PR

A building that will make eyes pop is in the works for the Industrial
Relations and Public Relations Departments and Mechanical Department
Administration. Work has already begun on the foundations, approximate-
ly on the site formerly occupied by BQ 2, originally built around 1930.
"Administration Building”

Occupancy date for the new
tentatively at January 1, 1958.

After long consultations with the departments concerned, Lago en-

gineers and architects designed the
completely air-conditioned building
to accommodate about 200 persons,
and in their design allowed for the
specialized requirements and needs
of the departments, including large
conference rooms, a completely
equipped photographic laboratory
and file and storage rooms.

The primary characteristics of
the new building are a contempor-
ary appearance inside and out, and
a flexibility of design within. It is
basically of lightweight steel frame
construction, with steel columns lo-
cated outside the building walls to
allow greater interior flexibility.
End walls, facing east and west, are
solid masonry to protect the interior
from early morning and late after-
noon sun; north and south walls are
curtain walls of glass--nearly solid
walls of windows, protected by mas-
sive overhangs. The top part of
each window will be clear glass to
permit the inhabitant to see out and
keep heat out; beneath each win-
dow is a blue glass-faced panel, to
give a pleasing appearance. The
outside window wall will be framed
with redwood. The lobby front
plate glass, and the overhang--ac-
tually the space between the first
story ceiling and the second story
floor--will extend out far enough to
shade the lobby from all but early
morning sun. The overhangs along
the north and south walls also house
the main air-conditioning.

Because of the movable walls, and
because most of the woodwork will

glass slabs applied according to a

ceiling tiles snapping in and out,
even prefabricated stairways to be

WHEN the night-blooming cereus blooms -- that’s news. This one, which

belongs to LPD Lt. and Mrs. H. Oppenhuizen, blossomed recently. The

plant, which grew from a cutting, is about six years old. It put out 27

blooms this year, all of which were dead next morning. From the time

the buds began opening until they were in full bloom was about two

hours. Most night-blooming cereus flower only once a year, but this one
for some strange reason blooms every three or four months.

Boxing Principles
Easy To Learn

Boxing has always been a favorite
sport since early Roman and Greek
days. Today there is more interest
than ever in boxing.

The big difference between fight-
ing and boxing, as any boxer will
tell you, is that the boy who wants
to fight usually has lost control of
himself, and the boxer knows what
he is doing.

Boxing is both a sport and science
--"the sweet science’ as some
writers call it--as these pictures
show. Notice that the fist is held in
an up-and-down position with the
thumb knuckle on top. This is the
only correct position for the two
best punches: the left jab and the
right cross. If your palm turns in
either way as you deliver these
punches, you will lose power and
you may also injure your hand.

The hand should be relaxed until
the instant before contact. Then the
fist is snapped shut and the punch
is delivered with fist, arm and
shoulder locked in one straight line.
Aim always to hit with the knuckle
next to the little finger. By doing
this, the load is shared by the three
biggest knuckles. This saves not
only broken bones in the hand, but
also results in a better punch.

In the pictures, notice that the
boy’s left foot is forward when he
throws his left jab, but that his
right foot is forward when he cross-
es with his right hand. The "anchor”
foot, in other words, is always on
the opposite from the hand doing
the punching. On defense, for this
reason, you can usually expect an
opponent to try a left hand punch
if his left foot is forward, or vice
versa. A right-handed boxer usually
leads with left jabs, keeping his
opponent off balance or setting him
up for the stronger right hand
punch, The "one-two” series is a left
jab to the body followed quickly by
the right cross to the head.

The boxer protects his face on
the left by tucking his chin behind
his left shoulder and extending his
left arm, and on the right side by
holding his right glove close to his
chin. From this position he can
either attack or defend.

Condition is probably more im-
portant to a boxer than to any other
athlete. When you try boxing three
or four rounds the first time you
may be astonished to find how
heavy your arms become. A boxer
who is too tired to keep his hands
up cannot defend himself. This ex-
plains why professionals train for
weeks before a bout, running miles
of roadwork and punching the
heavy bag for hours

Find a teacher or experienced
boxer to guide you if you want to
become even slightly proficient as
a boxer. He can show you the care-
ful way to prepare yourself for this
exciting sport.

Moral: Don’t

Ever Try

To Fool An Elephant

In Saigon, in French Indo-China,
there used to be a 100-year old ele-
phant who entertained all the zoo
visitors with his gay extravagance.
His name was Bimble-Bumble, and
he had a curious fondness for spend-
ing money.

As fast as Bimble-Bumble was
tossed a coin by somebody in the
crowd, he would grab it with his
long trunk, and then reach out do
buy peanuts and bananas from the
native who always had his pusheart
handy. Bimble-Bumble was the man’s
best customer. One day four French
sailors came to the zoo and decided
they would try to fool the elephant
They were all dressed alike in white
uniforms, and they thought that not
even an elephant would be able to

tell them apart.

One of the sailors threw a round
piece of lead like a coin to the ele-
phant. Right away Bimble-Bumble
knew something was wrong. When

| the coin hit the floor it didn’t give

a musical jingle.

He hesitated a moment, and then
offered the slug to the fruit dealer.

The man, seeing the coin was no
good, thew it back to the elephant.
All the sailors laughed, thinking
they had put one over on Bimble-
Bumble. They didn’t suspect any-
thing when Bimble-Bumble
his little eyes around until they were
fixed on the sailor who threw the
slug. The four sailors went away
gaily.

About three hours later the four
came back. Bimble-Bumble acted as
if he were glad to see them. He put
out his trunk to all the crowd just
as if he were counting the people in
his audience. He went over them one
by one.

When Bimble-Bumble came to the
sailor who had fooled him with the
phony coin, he paid him special at-
tention. Never had the big elephant
appeared so friendly.

Completely taken in, the sailor of-
fered a handful of peanuts. Bimble-
Bumble reached out his trunk as if
to accept them. Suddenly, as if he
had rehearsed it all beforehand, he
gave that sailor the surprise of his
life. He let fly a gallon of water,
drenching the boy from head to toe

There was satisfied sparkle in
Bimble-Bumble’s eye, as if he were
telling the sailor: "It doesn’t pay |
to try to fool an elephant.

Play Ball!

Baseball is many things to many
people: it is statistics in a book, and
little squiggles on a scorecard; it is
the sound of a ball coming off a bat
and heading for distant pastures; it
is the color of blue sky, and uni-
forms; it is a particularly graceful
pivot at second, a swirl of dust in a
slide at home. All of these things--
plus some others--were in abundance
in the Lago Little League campaign
this year. Four teams played two
games a week--for glory, let’s say,
for the excitement. These boys
learned to play well themselves and
how to win. That’s good baseball.
And they learned to appreciate
others playing well, and how to
lose. That’s good sportmanship.

Aside from these lofty principles,
the boys and the fans who came to
watch them in Lone Palm Stadium
had simply a good time.

Deep strategy.

Owen To Study |
Safety Operations
In Europe

Gordon N. Owen, Lago’s "Mr
Safety”, has been selected to parti-
cipate in the study of safety activi-
ties in affiliated refineries and other

operations in Europe. This study
program, which will require Mr.
Owen's absence from his post of
Safety Division Head in Lago for
about 3'/2 months, is designed to
permit a mutually beneficial ex-

change of philosophy, programs and
administrative techniques involving
safety. He will also be asked to pay
particular attention to manufactur-
ing safety work in
marketing.

Accompanying him will be J. E.
Jeffries, who many Lago oldtimers

engineer for marketing operations
in Esso Standard Oil.

Mr. Owen plans to spend two to}
three weeks in New York with Mr. |
Jeffries to discuss specific parts of |
their program and to make visits to)
various marketing operations. The
tentative date for the flight to
Europe is September 29.

Schnurr, then a carpenter,
was asked to set up a foundry operation, chiefly to fill a pressing need

cast iron
the

for a steady stream of the
bubble caps that are used by

. E cA
hundreds in many of the refinery’s

tall towers. Cast iron stair treads
for the countless stairways on the
stills also were a frequent require-
ment, and there was an increasing
need for specialized castings needed
for the growing lake tanker fleet
that was hauling crude oil to the
infant refinery.

By 1937 operations had outgrown
the small building originally located
on what is now the site of the Lago
Commissary, and the greatly ex-
panded foundry and pattern shop
were set up in the present location
west of the Commissary. Late in
1942 Mr. Schnurr left Aruba and
was replaced as foreman by Hugo
McGibbon (In later years Mr.
Schnurr was to spend several years
teaching foundry practices in India
as part of the U. S. government’s
Point Four aid program.)

The Foundry’s work became of
extreme importance during the war,
when every old ship that could turn
a propeller was pressed into service
and when regular overhauls at ship
repair yards were usually an im-
possibility.

During the decade after the war
the refinery had less and less fre-
quent need for the Foundry’s ser-
vices, and the Shipyard, which kept
the Lake Fleet in repair and sup-
plied critical repair needs for ocean
tankers, supplied the principal busi-
ness. Time moved on and conditions
changed, however, and by 1954 it
was necessary to close up the Ship-
yard operation. Two factors brought
this about: pipelines were moving
erude oil from the fields to Amuay
Bay, on Paraguana Peninsula, where
large ocean tankers could pick it up
for transport to Aruba; at the same
time the many years of dredging on
the Lake Maracaibo sandbar had
finally opened up the lake to the
large ships, so that use of smaller

An outstanding feature of the
Foundry’s history has been its
long record for operating safely.
While the handling of molten
metals and heavy equipment had
substantial hazards, at closing
time August 15 the group had
not sustained a lost time accident
since January 21, 1942. Their
consciousness of safety and their
skills at their specialized jobs
were such that they passed the
last 13 and a half years without
a lost time injury.

ships of the Lake Fleet could no
longer be justified economically.
Without the Shipyard, and with the
refinery’s needs for castings being
reduced and now handled in other
ways, there is no longer any work
for the Foundry.

While it cannot always be done
when operations change, in this case
it was possible to find new jobs for
all the men on the Foundry staff.
One man goes to TSD-Engineering,
two to Carpenter and Paint, three
to Machinist, and the others will
enter the Mason & Insulator craft.
Since more than half of them had
worked together at the Foundry for
over 17 years, they will long remem-
ber their associations there.

Negotiations Are Completed

Shift Hours Cut
Contract Runs
To Mareh 1, ’°58

A seven-weeks period of nego-
tiations on a new Working Agree-
ment at Lago ended in the early
hours of Sunday, August 19 with
Lago Employee Council and man-
agement agreement on a wide
range of conditions affecting all
constituents of the LEC. An-
nouncements of the essential por-
tions of the agreement were made
simultaneously Monday afternoon
to supervisors and to district re-
presentatives, and details were
given to employees at the end of
the day.

Many of the changes become ef-

| fective September 1, while others go

into effect October 1, 1956 or
January 1, 1957.
Among the most important

changes are the reduction of hours
for shift workers from 48 to 45 or
44.8, with maintenance of earnings
including a shift differential of 22
cents; minor rate adjustments in
equivalent hourly rates among non-
shift employees and in Private Staff
Monthly rates, in order to keep a
similarity of base rates for equi-
valent levels of jobs; and, among
fixed-rate jobs, payment of a ser-
vice premium of from three to five
cents per hour for accumulated ser-
vice at intervals of five years on the
same job.

Favorable adjustments have been
made in other fields such as sick-
ness benefits, holiday pay, vacations,
overtime, layoff allowances and
others. Another area of agreement
covers changed rates for a variety
of specific job classifications, and
establishment of fixed increases for
acting assignments and promotions.
In addition, a number of improve-
ments in working conditions were
negotiated.

Important projects set up for
study by management included
means of providing improved an-
nuities through participation of em-

ployees, the establishment of a
scholarship program for Lago em-
ployees, and "in-plant feeding’ to
provide for purchase of hot food by
employees.

The largest single change -- re-
duction of shift hours -- will help
avoid the necessity of laying off up
to 100 Process employees who would
have been surplus if the 48-hour
week were continued; at the same
time it will result in additional job
openings in other departments that
have shift operations.

A new feature of the agreement
is its being a _ ’’closed-end” rather
than an open-end” contract of in-
definite duration, as was the pre-
vious agreement. The contract re-
mains in force until March 1, 1958,
with a provision that wages may be
discussed March 1, 1957 in light of
conditions then prevailing.

sults will be carried in the next issue.)

This pattern shows that
there are 13 general steps or stages in the downhill progress of a}
problem drinker. To a certain point the drinker can call a halt to his
drinking behavior. Past that point he becomes a compulsive drinker,
and cannot break away until he realizes he must have outside help
to stop. (See nearby box for the 13 steps.)

Where can help be found for the problem drinker? Here in Aruba,
as everywhere, it can come from several sources: medical care and
mental hygiene, such as Dr. Turfboer provides; from Alcoholics Ano-
nymous, in both their open or closed meetings, and from AA mem- |
bers working closely and sympathetically to those who are still drink- |
ing heavily. There are other ways too.

In the next article, all of these will be explored in some detail.

men are bestowing on their pride and joy: a model
of the new Administration Building soon
erected. From left: Henry Euler, John Leahy, War-
ren Michael and Jim Wayne. Mr. Leahy, who is no
longer in Aruba, constructed the model on his own
time. Picture at top shows preliminary work being
done on the building site in front of the Training

Building.

Work Starts on Office Building
For Meehanieal, IR and PR

A building that will make eyes pop is in the works for the Industrial
Relations and Public Relations Departments and Mechanical Department
Administration. Work has already begun on the foundations, approximate-
ly on the site formerly occupied by BQ 2, originally built around 1930.
"Administration Building”

Occupancy date for the new
tentatively at January 1, 1958.

After long consultations with the departments concerned, Lago en-

gineers and architects designed the
completely air-conditioned building
to accommodate about 200 persons,
and in their design allowed for the
specialized requirements and needs
of the departments, including large
conference rooms, a completely
equipped photographic laboratory
and file and storage rooms.

The primary characteristics of
the new building are a contempor-
ary appearance inside and out, and
a flexibility of design within. It is
basically of lightweight steel frame
construction, with steel columns lo-
cated outside the building walls to
allow greater interior flexibility.
End walls, facing east and west, are
solid masonry to protect the interior
from early morning and late after-
noon sun; north and south walls are
curtain walls of glass--nearly solid
walls of windows, protected by mas-
sive overhangs. The top part of
each window will be clear glass to
permit the inhabitant to see out and
keep heat out; beneath each win-
dow is a blue glass-faced panel, to
give a pleasing appearance. The
outside window wall will be framed
with redwood. The lobby front
plate glass, and the overhang--ac-
tually the space between the first
story ceiling and the second story
floor--will extend out far enough to
shade the lobby from all but early
morning sun. The overhangs along
the north and south walls also house
the main air-conditioning.

WHEN the night-blooming cereus blooms -- that’s news. This one, which

belongs to LPD Lt. and Mrs. H. Oppenhuizen, blossomed recently. The

plant, which grew from a cutting, is about six years old. It put out 27

blooms this year, all of which were dead next morning. From the time

the buds began opening until they were in full bloom was about two

hours. Most night-blooming cereus flower only once a year, but this one
for some strange reason blooms every three or four months.

Boxing Principles
Easy To Learn

Boxing has always been a favorite
sport since early Roman and Greek
days. Today there is more interest
than ever in boxing.

The big difference between fight-
ing and boxing, as any boxer will
tell you, is that the boy who wants
to fight usually has lost control of
himself, and the boxer knows what
he is doing.

Boxing is both a sport and science
--"the sweet science’ as some
writers call it--as these pictures
show. Notice that the fist is held in
an up-and-down position with the
thumb knuckle on top. This is the
only correct position for the two
best punches: the left jab and the
right cross. If your palm turns in
either way as you deliver these
punches, you will lose power and
you may also injure your hand.

The hand should be relaxed until
the instant before contact. Then the
fist is snapped shut and the punch
is delivered with fist, arm and
shoulder locked in one straight line.
Aim always to hit with the knuckle
next to the little finger. By doing
this, the load is shared by the three
biggest knuckles. This saves not
only broken bones in the hand, but
also results in a better punch.

In the pictures, notice that the
boy’s left foot is forward when he
throws his left jab, but that his
right foot is forward when he cross-
es with his right hand. The "anchor”
foot, in other words, is always on
the opposite from the hand doing
the punching. On defense, for this
reason, you can usually expect an
opponent to try a left hand punch
if his left foot is forward, or vice
versa. A right-handed boxer usually
leads with left jabs, keeping his
opponent off balance or setting him
up for the stronger right hand
punch, The "one-two” series is a left
jab to the body followed quickly by
the right cross to the head.

The boxer protects his face on
the left by tucking his chin behind
his left shoulder and extending his
left arm, and on the right side by
holding his right glove close to his
chin. From this position he can
either attack or defend.

Condition is probably more im-
portant to a boxer than to any other
athlete. When you try boxing three
or four rounds the first time you
may be astonished to find how
heavy your arms become. A boxer
who is too tired to keep his hands
up cannot defend himself. This ex-
plains why professionals train for
weeks before a bout, running miles
of roadwork and punching the
heavy bag for hours

Find a teacher or experienced
boxer to guide you if you want to
become even slightly proficient as
a boxer. He can show you the care-
ful way to prepare yourself for this
exciting sport.

Moral: Don’t

Ever Try

To Fool An Elephant

In Saigon, in French Indo-China,
there used to be a 100-year old ele-
phant who entertained all the zoo
visitors with his gay extravagance.
His name was Bimble-Bumble, and
he had a curious fondness for spend-
ing money.

As fast as Bimble-Bumble was
tossed a coin by somebody in the
crowd, he would grab it with his
long trunk, and then reach out do
buy peanuts and bananas from the
native who always had his pusheart
handy. Bimble-Bumble was the man’s
best customer. One day four French
sailors came to the zoo and decided
they would try to fool the elephant
They were all dressed alike in white
uniforms, and they thought that not
even an elephant would be able to

tell them apart.

One of the sailors threw a round
piece of lead like a coin to the ele-
phant. Right away Bimble-Bumble
knew something was wrong. When

| the coin hit the floor it didn’t give

a musical jingle.

He hesitated a moment, and then
offered the slug to the fruit dealer.

The man, seeing the coin was no
good, thew it back to the elephant.
All the sailors laughed, thinking
they had put one over on Bimble-
Bumble. They didn’t suspect any-
thing when Bimble-Bumble
his little eyes around until they were
fixed on the sailor who threw the
slug. The four sailors went away
gaily.

About three hours later the four
came back. Bimble-Bumble acted as
if he were glad to see them. He put
out his trunk to all the crowd just
as if he were counting the people in
his audience. He went over them one
by one.

When Bimble-Bumble came to the
sailor who had fooled him with the
phony coin, he paid him special at-
tention. Never had the big elephant
appeared so friendly.

Completely taken in, the sailor of-
fered a handful of peanuts. Bimble-
Bumble reached out his trunk as if
to accept them. Suddenly, as if he
had rehearsed it all beforehand, he
gave that sailor the surprise of his
life. He let fly a gallon of water,
drenching the boy from head to toe

There was satisfied sparkle in
Bimble-Bumble’s eye, as if he were
telling the sailor: "It doesn’t pay |
to try to fool an elephant.

Play Ball!

Baseball is many things to many
people: it is statistics in a book, and
little squiggles on a scorecard; it is
the sound of a ball coming off a bat
and heading for distant pastures; it
is the color of blue sky, and uni-
forms; it is a particularly graceful
pivot at second, a swirl of dust in a
slide at home. All of these things--
plus some others--were in abundance
in the Lago Little League campaign
this year. Four teams played two
games a week--for glory, let’s say,
for the excitement. These boys
learned to play well themselves and
how to win. That’s good baseball.
And they learned to appreciate
others playing well, and how to
lose. That’s good sportmanship.

Aside from these lofty principles,
the boys and the fans who came to
watch them in Lone Palm Stadium
had simply a good time.

Deep strategy.

Strategia grandi.

Baseball ta hopi cos pa hopi hende: e ta estadistica den un buki, mar-

un slide na home. Tur e cosnan aki -- plus algun otro -- tabata na bon-
