Serving Community Needs

Organizations whose dedicated purpose is to assist individuals or |
families when help is most needed are one form of mankind's efforts to
serve his fellow man, Such organizations exist to lend a supporting
hand to those who may have encountered unforeseen difficulties in
life’s journey and to assist worthwhile community ventures.

Some are world-wide in their functions, others country-wide while
still others concern themselves primarily with needs of their own
community. In the main, the Lago Community Council falls into the
latter category. It is primarily a benevolent organization that acts
as a coordinator of funds to be dispensed to worthy and deserving
causes. Because of the good the Council has done through wide usage
of its funds, its annual appeal for monetary support is answered on an |
average of 94.3 per cent participation by residents of Lago Colony. By
giving to the Lago Community Council, each and every contributor
thereby helps serve his fellow man. |

This year Fls. 67,764.58 was contributed during the drive held in
March. A portion of the money goes to designated agencies who daily
carry on welfare work; some to designated individuals in need; a|
portion to local organizations and the remainder to the Council with-
out designation. It is with the latter portion that the Community
Council is able to assist almost immediately island activities that bene-
fit the community.

Along with individual donations, the company and the Marine Club
also contributed to assist the Lago Community Council in accomplish-
ing its objectives. This year, as has been the case for the past several |
years, the company donated Fls. 11,280. In addition to the company
contribution, the Marine Club contributed Fls. 6000 — all destined for
benevolent purposes dedicated to the advancement of community life.

To have such an organization in the community lends both comfort
and satisfaction to the residents of that community. There is comfort
in knowing that people think enough of each other to contribute to
a fund that supports community needs. There is comfort in knowing
that such a fund exists that has money immediately available to help
offset catastrophes and to help the unfortunate in finding relief that
might otherwise not be found.

To the contributor there is satisfaction. He gives, regardless of
whether or not he designates his money to a specific purpose, knowing
full well that he is assisting in supporting, either directly or indirectly,
those needing community assistance.

Taking but a few of the agencies that receive designated funds, it
can be seen how contributors help their fellow man on the island |
through the Lago Community Council. Among those receiving funds
to assist in their community activities are the Winkel Society, the Don
Bosco Fund, Rotary Club, Aruba Lions Club, Klim Fund, the Aruba
Tuberculosis Fund and St. Theresa’s Church.

These are but a few, but they indicate the good that can be cone to
help support others through a community organization such as the
Lago Community Council.

Den Servicio di Comunida

Organizacionnan, cual nan obheto dedica ta pa yuda personanan o

Council a haci door di uso extenso di su fondos, su apelacion cada}
anja pa haya yudanza di placa ta worde contesta cu un participacion di|
94.3 porciento di residentenan di Lago Colony. Door di contribui algo
na Lago Community Council, tur esnan cu ta haci nan contribucion ta|
yuda sirbi nan prohimo.

E anja aki Fls. 67,764.58 a worde contribui durante e campanja teni|
na Maart. Un parti di e placa aki ta bai na sociedadnan cu diariamente |
ta haci trabao di caridad; otro parti ta worde designa pa personanan|
cu ta den necesidad; un parti ta bai na organizacionnan local y e resto)
ta bai pa e Council sin designacion specifico. Ta cu e resto aki cu Com- |
munity Council ta na posicion di yuda casi inmediatamente den activi-|
dadnan di e isla cu ta na beneficio di e comunidad. |

Hunto cu donacion individual, Company y Marine Club tambe ta
contribui pa yuda Lago Community Council cumpli su obhetonan. E}
anja aki, manera tabata e caso durante e ultimo varios anjanan, Com-
pania a duna Fs. 11,280. Fuera di e contribucion di Compania, Marine
Club a contribui Fls. 6000 — tur destina pa obhetonan di benevolencia
cu ta dedica pa progreso di bida di comunidad.

Pa e persona cu ta haci contribucion tin satisfaccion. El ta duna no}

ariba e isla door di Lago Community Council. Entre esnan cu ta ricibi
fondos pa asisti nan den nan actividadnan pa comunidad ta Winkel
Vereniging, Don Bosco Fonds, Rotary Club, Club di Leones di Aruba,
Klim Fonds, Fondo di Tuberculoso pa Aruba y Misa di Santa Theresita.

Esakinan ta solamente algun, pero e ta indica e bondad cu por worde
haci pa yuda otro door di un organizacion di comunidad manera Lago.

Trade Winds Play
Havoc with Flags

The Trade Winds, which most of
the year keep Aruba cool, drive the

sailboats and wreak havoc with
women’s coiffeures, also raise hob
with the flags.

Police Chief G. B. Brook, whose

department is responsible for main-
taining the flags at the General Of-
fice Buiding and Gates 1, 6 and 8,
reports the standard four-by-eight
foot Dutch flag lasts two to three
weeks.

"That’s all they’re good for in this
wind,” the chief said. ’They’re up 12
hours a day, 84 hours a 2k and
are whipping constantly during that
time. The first thing that goes is the
hem and then they start to tear.”

The company tested flags made of
nylon, but decided not to adopt
them when it found they
three times as much as the wool fl:
then in use and lasted only twice
long.

In a year, Storehouse records show,
the wind destroys 150 Dutch flags
d around the refinery and in the
Fleet where it also shreds 100
Panamaian, 75 Venezuelan, a dozen
United States, British, Columbian,
Cuban and Dominican Republic and

A Super Tanker

“Maximum Distance - Minimum Cost’

Shins which ply the world’s sea lanes today, carrying

millions of gallons of oil and oil products in their
tanks, are highly whose principal
product is low-cost transportation.

complex machines

Their evolution centers around the story of man’s
untiring efforts to carry a bulk commodity a maximum
distance at a minimum cost. To do this, he’s built

tankers larger and larger until today some are the size
of battleships.

Transportation engineers, however, have not solved
all their problems by increasing the size of the ships.
Other difficulties created by the unusual length,
draft and width of the mammoth tankers — have forced
the engineers onto other tacks.

As a result, they have developed tankers which, ton-
mile for ton-mile, efficient as their larger
brothers yet can use the harbors in the areas they
serve, tie up at adequate loading and discharging ter-
minals, under-go repairs in existing dry dock facilities
and meet other operating requirement

One such class of 1 is the super-tanker which
is represented by the Suez,” the Lima,” the "Glou-
cester’”’ and other Esso ships which frequently call at
Aruba.

While these ships are not as large as some being
built for othe companies today — nor, in fact, as large
as four 35,000 deadweight-ton tankers being built for
the Esso Shipping Co. for future use — they are in-
tricate ships whose construction is a maze of inter-
locking time schedules, work assignments, order num-
bers and coordination.

The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.
recently completed the "Esso Florence,” the last of six
super tankers from the Virginia concern by
Esso Shipping. Like her sister-ships, the ”Florence”
is 628 overall, 82’,6” in molded breadth and has a dead-
weight tonnage of 26,700. She can carry some 230,000
barrels.

Before the contract for the six ships was awarded,

are as

E Shipping’s Construction and Repair Department
had prepared drawings and specifications for every
detail of the vessels

The shipyard igned numbers to the hulls and

prefixed all orders for work on each ship with the hull

number. Thus a spare tailshaft for the Esso Suez,”
for instance, was numbered H47 30; work on the
”"Suez’s” rudder was labeled H475-131.

This numbering system is one phase of the company’s
efforts to e the of 18,000
workmen who build ship’s all over the > yard
site on the banks of the James River.

The first step in the building of the hull is the devel-
opment of a time-table. It dates such major
events as the keel-laying, installation of major equip-
ment, launching and delivery.

From the master time-table other
developed which set starting and completion dates for
smaller segments of the ship’s construction.

The super tankers are divided into 24 compartments
numbered in the sequence in which they are to be built.
The first lies just aft of amidships. Construction alter-
nates fore and aft of this point, providing time for the
power plant and auxiliary machinery to be built, in-
stalled and tested without delaying other work.

As far as possible, complete units are built and tested
before being added to the hull. Deckhouses and othe1
sections of comparable size are constructed in one piece
and then installed. The bow is built in two pieces; the
stern in three with each assembly weighing some 100
tons.

In these days of steel-hulled ships, the welder is the
king-pin. Nearly ev construction phase is designed
for his convenience, for he’ll deposit 264,000 pounds of
welding material before the super tanker slips down the
ways.

Also involved in building a ship such as the
are erectors, fitters, drillers, bolte riveters — who
will smash home some 40,000 rivets — straighteners,
regulators, burners, shipwrights, stage builders, angle-
smiths, crane operators, steel fabricators, loftsmen and
machinists.

Long before construction of the hull begins, however,
the shipyard’s patternmakers, molders and machinists
have been making the stem, stern frame, rudder and

Suez”

other cast parts plus the forged pieces such as the
tailshaft.
Throughout the construction the time tables are

scrupuously kept, sending team-after-team of trades
men to the hull in time to meet the various assemblies
as they arrive for installation.

While the hull is still on the ways or in the graving
dock the major machinery — boilers, gears, turbines
and others are installed. The turbine, operating
under pressure and at speeds thought impossible 50
years ago — is probably the most vital piece of equip-
ment aboard.

Each turbine

is over 4000 blades each requiring 20
machining operations. Forty-five men in the
gallery spend months fashioning these blades
The nozzles, which direct streams of steam at the blades
and propel the turbine rotors, require additional hun-
dreds of hours of precise machine work.

Once alfoat, the ship is towed to the fitting-out dock
where the final touches are added, the painters pack up
their brushes and pails and the tanker is ready for her
trial trip.

With the preliminaries out of the way, the four-hour
endurance run at top speed of over 16 knots per hour
is started. In the engine room and in other parts of the
ship the experts — meters, gauges and other measuring
devices at hand — check each phase of the ship’s per-
formance.

The trials successfully completed, the ship is taken

Sixth Straight Pennant
‘
To put together a string of five straight World Cham-
pionships is a feat only the New York Yankees can pe Ms
claim. Charles Dillon (Casey) Stengel’s "five for five” | at ‘ “
is a record unparalled in managerial ranks. All that is |= @ fe = e& ¥ A m !
ball history, however. The big question is: Can the || . s
Yankees do it again? Supporters of the Bronx Bombers | =
emphatically say they can. Those whose affections lie ,
elsewhere are quick to point out in most hopeful tone,
< that Lopat, Reynolds, Sain and Rizzuto are past their
prime. This, however, has been said before, but the Yankees keep rolling. |
True, the New York club is not a young one. Eliminating Mantle, whe i
is the junior of the squad at 22, the men pictured below average 31 years. 4
Bomber fans are quick to reply to the club’s average age. What they don’t
have in youth, they have in experience. One thing is certain, the Yankees
are tough to beat. They have a knack for winning the "big” one.
Winning pennants is nothing new to the Yankees; they have won more 1

flags than any other major league team. Over the past 50 years, 20 league
and 16 World Championship pennants have graced the centerfield pole in
Yankee Stadium. Helping to keep the flags flying were such fabulous
characters of the baseball world as Babe Ruth, Earle Combs, Lou Gehrig,
Lefty Gomez, Tony Lazzeri and Joe DiMaggio.

The picture captions give the players’ position, batting and throwing |
sides, age, height, weight, number of runs driven in last year and final |
1953 batting average.

Trade Winds Play
Havoc with Flags

The Trade Winds, which most of
the year keep Aruba cool, drive the

sailboats and wreak havoc with
women’s coiffeures, also raise hob
with the flags.

Police Chief G. B. Brook, whose

department is responsible for main-
taining the flags at the General Of-
fice Buiding and Gates 1, 6 and 8,
reports the standard four-by-eight
foot Dutch flag lasts two to three
weeks.

"That’s all they’re good for in this
wind,” the chief said. ’They’re up 12
hours a day, 84 hours a 2k and
are whipping constantly during that
time. The first thing that goes is the
hem and then they start to tear.”

The company tested flags made of
nylon, but decided not to adopt
them when it found they
three times as much as the wool fl:
then in use and lasted only twice
long.

In a year, Storehouse records show,
the wind destroys 150 Dutch flags
d around the refinery and in the
Fleet where it also shreds 100
Panamaian, 75 Venezuelan, a dozen
United States, British, Columbian,

A Super Tanker

“Maximum Distance - Minimum Cost’

Shins which ply the world’s sea lanes today, carrying

millions of gallons of oil and oil products in their
tanks, are highly whose principal
product is low-cost transportation.

complex machines

Their evolution centers around the story of man’s
untiring efforts to carry a bulk commodity a maximum
distance at a minimum cost. To do this, he’s built

tankers larger and larger until today some are the size
of battleships.

Transportation engineers, however, have not solved
all their problems by increasing the size of the ships.
Other difficulties created by the unusual length,
draft and width of the mammoth tankers — have forced
the engineers onto other tacks.

As a result, they have developed tankers which, ton-
mile for ton-mile, efficient as their larger
brothers yet can use the harbors in the areas they
serve, tie up at adequate loading and discharging ter-
minals, under-go repairs in existing dry dock facilities
and meet other operating requirement

One such class of 1 is the super-tanker which
is represented by the Suez,” the Lima,” the "Glou-
cester’”’ and other Esso ships which frequently call at
Aruba.

While these ships are not as large as some being
built for othe companies today — nor, in fact, as large
as four 35,000 deadweight-ton tankers being built for
the Esso Shipping Co. for future use — they are in-
tricate ships whose construction is a maze of inter-
locking time schedules, work assignments, order num-
bers and coordination.

The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.
recently completed the "Esso Florence,” the last of six
super tankers from the Virginia concern by
Esso Shipping. Like her sister-ships, the ”Florence”
is 628 overall, 82’,6” in molded breadth and has a dead-
weight tonnage of 26,700. She can carry some 230,000
barrels.

Before the contract for the six ships was awarded,

are as

E Shipping’s Construction and Repair Department
had prepared drawings and specifications for every
detail of the vessels

The shipyard igned numbers to the hulls and

prefixed all orders for work on each ship with the hull

number. Thus a spare tailshaft for the Esso Suez,”
for instance, was numbered H47 30; work on the
”"Suez’s” rudder was labeled H475-131.

This numbering system is one phase of the company’s
efforts to e the of 18,000
workmen who build ship’s all over the > yard
site on the banks of the James River.

The first step in the building of the hull is the devel-
opment of a time-table. It dates such major
events as the keel-laying, installation of major equip-
ment, launching and delivery.

From the master time-table other
developed which set starting and completion dates for
smaller segments of the ship’s construction.

ribs, frames and other

The super tankers are divided into 24 compartments
numbered in the sequence in which they are to be built.
The first lies just aft of amidships. Construction alter-
nates fore and aft of this point, providing time for the
power plant and auxiliary machinery to be built, in-
stalled and tested without delaying other work.

As far as possible, complete units are built and tested
before being added to the hull. Deckhouses and othe1
sections of comparable size are constructed in one piece
and then installed. The bow is built in two pieces; the
stern in three with each assembly weighing some 100
tons.

In these days of steel-hulled ships, the welder is the
king-pin. Nearly ev construction phase is designed
for his convenience, for he’ll deposit 264,000 pounds of
welding material before the super tanker slips down the
ways.

Also involved in building a ship such as the
are erectors, fitters, drillers, bolte riveters — who
will smash home some 40,000 rivets — straighteners,
regulators, burners, shipwrights, stage builders, angle-
smiths, crane operators, steel fabricators, loftsmen and
machinists.

Long before construction of the hull begins, however,
the shipyard’s patternmakers, molders and machinists
have been making the stem, stern frame, rudder and

other cast parts plus the forged pieces such as the
tailshaft.
Throughout the construction the time tables are

scrupuously kept, sending team-after-team of trades
men to the hull in time to meet the various assemblies
as they arrive for installation.

While the hull is still on the ways or in the graving
dock the major machinery — boilers, gears, turbines
and others are installed. The turbine, operating
under pressure and at speeds thought impossible 50
years ago — is probably the most vital piece of equip-
ment aboard.

Each turbine

is over 4000 blades each requiring 20
machining operations. Forty-five men in the
gallery spend months fashioning these blades
The nozzles, which direct streams of steam at the blades
and propel the turbine rotors, require additional hun-
dreds of hours of precise machine work.

Once alfoat, the ship is towed to the fitting-out dock
where the final touches are added, the painters pack up
their brushes and pails and the tanker is ready for her

With the preliminaries out of the way, the four-hour

ship the experts — meters, gauges and other measuring
devices at hand — check each phase of the ship’s per-

Sixth Straight Pennant
To put together a string of five straight World Championships
is a feat only the New Yoik Yankees can
claim Charles Dillon Casey Stengels five for five
is a lecord unparalled in managerial ranks All that is
baseball history however The big question is Can the
Yankees do it again Suppoiters of the Bronx Bombers
emphatically say they can Those whose affections lie
elsewhere are quick to point out in most hopeful tones
that Lopat Reynolds Sain and Rizzuto are past their
prime This however has been said befoie but the Yankees keep 1 oiling
True the New York club is not a young one Eliminating Mantle who
is the junior of the squad at 22 the men pictured below average 31 years
Bomber fans are quick to reply to the clubs average age What they dont
have in youth they have in experience One thing is certain the Yankees
are tough to beat They have a knack for winning the big one
Winning pennants is nothing new to the Yankees they have won moie
flags than any other major league team Over the past 50 years 20 league
and 16 World Championship pennants have graced the centerfield pole in
Yankee Stadium Helping to keep the flags flying were such fabulous
characters of the baseball world as Babe Ruth Earle Combs Lou Gehrig
Lefty Gomez Tony Lazzeri and Joe DiMaggio
