Help Conserve Energy, Follow Tips
For Stretching Gasoline Mileage

You've been hearing a lot la-
tely about the gasoline situation
and how it might affect the use
of your automobile.

Here are some good ways to
stretch gasolirie mileage :

1. Keep Your Tires Fully Inflat-
ed. If tires are underinflated,
they put so much extra drag on
the engine that you'll use up to
6°/o more gasoline. Correct tire
inflation can save the average
driver up to 200 liters a year.

2. Avoid High Speeds. _Driv-
ing at 110 Kph. can take 22%
more gasoline per km than driv-
ing at 80. There’s a simple scien-

tific reason. When you double
your speed, your car has to over-
come 4 times as much wind re-
sistance. So don't fall into the
trap of thinking you're just using
gasoline fast. You're also using
a lot more of it.

3. Get Regular Tune-Up. A
complete tune-up, including new
spark plugs and ignition points,
can save the average driver up
to 650 liters of gasoline a year.
When your owner’s manual or
emissions supplement says you
need new spark plugs, points,
and other tune-up and emissions

service, believe it.
4. Replace Filters and check
all pollution-control devices re-
gularly. A dirty carburator air
filter alone can cost you as much
as 300 liters of gasoline a year.
It has the same effect as driving
with your choke partly closed.
5. Don’t Gun Your Engine to
warm it up. While it’s cold, the
automotive choke keeps it on an
extra-high diet.
6. Turn Off The Engine while
you're waiting for someone. One
minute of idling uses more ga-
soline than it takes to restart
your engine.
7. No Jackrabbit Starts. When
leaving a stop light, accelerate
moderately. Remember, it isn’t
adrenalin, but extra gasoline
that makes a car leap when you
hit the accelerator hard. Fast
starts can increase your gaso-
line consumption by as much as
6%/o and grossly wear out your
tires.
8. Don’t Use Your Air Condi-
tioner when it’s not needed. It
can take enough engine power
to use almost 6 liters of gasoline
in every tankful.
9. Drive with a Steady Foot.
Many drivers unconsciously tap
the gas pedal when they drive.
Tests prove this can reduce
fuel economy.

But most important of all, you
can help conserve precious
energy by avoiding unnecessa-
ty driving. This can be done by
taking the following hints :

— First decide if a car trip is
really necessary. If the distance

is short, avoid using the car.

— Use your telephone where-
ver possible instead of driving
many miles to handle a_ busi-
ness.

— Restrict your pleasure driv-
ing to the minimum.

— Pool the use of your car
wherever possible, so trips of
various persons can be combin-
ed using less trips.

— Combine several short trips
into one wherever possible.

The latest addition to Lago’s
mechanical "zoo" is a heavy-
duty “giraffe” truck. With a 70-
ft. long articulated boom, the
new lifting equipment will be li-
terally looming over the other
four of its species, which have
a reaching capacity of only 35
feet.

A Mobile "Hi-Ranger" Aerial
Tower, it was acquired by the
Mechanical - Engineering Divi-
sion for the Mechanical - Refi-
nery Maintenance & Planning
Division. It will also be used ex-
tensively by the Equipment Ins-
pection Section personnel. One
of the most modern lifting equip-
ment now on the market, this
unit is mounted on a Ford-ma-
nufactured chassis while the
superstructure is made by Hobbs
International of Connecticut,
U.S.A. The unit includes a 700-
Ib. capacity hydraulic bucket
which can accommodate two
men at a time with their required
tools and equipment.

Designed especially for use at
high elevations, it is most suit-
able here at Lago for inspect-
ion and repair work on tanks,
and other hard-to-reach high
structures. At the same time, it
eliminates the need for time-
consuming scaffold installation
and provides a much faster
operation. Easy to operate, this
"giraffe’’ has three lever con-
trols at the platform of the
truck to regulate vertical, hori-
zontal and swing movements.

Help Conserve Energy, Follow Tips
For Stretching Gasoline Mileage

You've been hearing a lot la-
tely about the gasoline situation
and how it might affect the use
of your automobile.

Here are some good ways to
stretch gasolirie mileage :

1. Keep Your Tires Fully Inflat-
ed. If tires are underinflated,
they put so much extra drag on
the engine that you'll use up to
6°/o more gasoline. Correct tire
inflation can save the average
driver up to 200 liters a year.

2. Avoid High Speeds. _Driv-
ing at 110 Kph. can take 22%
more gasoline per km than driv-
ing at 80. There’s a simple scien-

tific reason. When you double
your speed, your car has to over-
come 4 times as much wind re-
sistance. So don't fall into the
trap of thinking you're just using
gasoline fast. You're also using
a lot more of it.

3. Get Regular Tune-Up. A
complete tune-up, including new
spark plugs and ignition points,
can save the average driver up
to 650 liters of gasoline a year.
When your owner’s manual or
emissions supplement says you
need new spark plugs, points,
and other tune-up and emissions

Help Conserve Energy

service, believe it.
4. Replace Filters and check
all pollution-control devices re-
gularly. A dirty carburator air
filter alone can cost you as much
as 300 liters of gasoline a year.
It has the same effect as driving
with your choke partly closed.
5. Don’t Gun Your Engine to
warm it up. While it’s cold, the
automotive choke keeps it on an
extra-high diet.
6. Turn Off The Engine while
you're waiting for someone. One
minute of idling uses more ga-
soline than it takes to restart
your engine.
7. No Jackrabbit Starts. When
leaving a stop light, accelerate
moderately. Remember, it isn’t
adrenalin, but extra gasoline
that makes a car leap when you
hit the accelerator hard. Fast
starts can increase your gaso-
line consumption by as much as
6%/o and grossly wear out your
tires.
8. Don’t Use Your Air Condi-
tioner when it’s not needed. It
can take enough engine power
to use almost 6 liters of gasoline
in every tankful.
9. Drive with a Steady Foot.
Many drivers unconsciously tap
the gas pedal when they drive.
Tests prove this can reduce
fuel economy.

But most important of all, you
can help conserve precious
energy by avoiding unnecessa-
ty driving. This can be done by
taking the following hints :

— First decide if a car trip is
really necessary. If the distance

is short, avoid using the car.

— Use your telephone where-
ver possible instead of driving
many miles to handle a_ busi-
ness.

— Restrict your pleasure driv-
ing to the minimum.

— Pool the use of your car
wherever possible, so trips of
various persons can be combin-
ed using less trips.

— Combine several short trips
into one wherever possible.

Recientemente nos a tende
hopi tocante di e situacion di

Siguiente ta algun bon mane-
ra pa saca mas kilometrahe for

1. Mantene Bo Tayernan Bon

Bo usa te cu 6°/o mas di gasolin.
Correccion di yenamento di ta-

2. Evita Velocidadnan Halto.
Stuurmento na 110 Km pa ora
por haci Bo gasta 22°/o mas ga-
solin pa Kilometer cy si Bo
stuur na 80 Km. pa ora. Esey ta
un simple razon cientifico. Ora
cu Bo dobbel Bo velocidad, Bo
auto mester wanta cuatro biaha
mas resistencia na biento. Asina
cu no cai den e trampa di pensa
cu solamente ta liher Bo ta gas-
tando gasolin. Tambe Bo ta

sa cu Bo mester "spark plugs”,
“points” nobo of otro servicio di
tune-up of emisionnan, kere nan.
4. Reemplaza Filters y check
tur equipo cu ta controla polu-
cion regularmente. Un carbura-
tor su air filter sushi so por cos-
ta Bo tanto como 80 galon di
gasolin pa anja. Esaki tin e mes-
un efecto manera ora cu Bo ta
corre cu e “choke” parcialmen-
te cerra.
5. No Raise’ Bo Motor pa
keinte’le. Mientras cu e ta friew,
e choke automatico ta tene’le
ariba un dieta bastante bon ca-
ba.
6. Paga e Motor mientras cu
Bo ta warda ariba un hende. Un
minuut cu e motor ta draai ta usa
mas gasolin cu locual ta nece-
sario pa start e atrobe.
7. No Sali cu Rancada Fuerte.
Ora cu Bo sali despues di e
senjal di “stop”, primi gasolin
moderadamente. Corda bon, esa-
ki no ta adrenalina, sino extra
gasolin cu ta haci bo auto bula
ora cu bo primi e pedal mucho
duro. Rancada rapido por au-
menta e uso di gasolin te casi
6°/o y ta gasta bo tayernan seve-
ramente.
8. No Usa Bo Airecondiciona-
do ora cu Bo no tin mester di
dje. Esaki por tuma_ suficiente
energia di motor pa usa casi 6
liter di gasolin den cada tanki
yen.
9. Stuur cu Mesun Velocidad.
Hopi chofer sin paga atencion ta
cambia presion di nan pia ari-
ba e pedal di gasolin. Prueba-
nan a demonstra cu esaki por
reduci economia di combustible.
Pero mas importante cu tur,
Bo por yuda conserva energia
precioso door di evita corremen-
to innecesario. Esaki por ser ha-
ci door di observa e siguiente
sugerencianan :
— Promer, dicidi si un viaha
cu auto ta berdaderamente ne-
cesario. Si e distancia ta corti-
co, evita di usa bo auto.
— Usa bo telefoon unda ta po-
sibel envez di corre hopi kilo-
meter pa trata un asunto.
— Reduci stuurmento pa pla-
cer na lo minimo.
— Combina uso di bo auto un-
da ta posible, asina cu viahenan
di varios persona por ser com-
bina y usando menos viahe.
— Combina varios viahenan
cortico den un solo viahe ca-
minda cu ta posible.

The latest addition to Lago’s
mechanical "zoo" is a heavy-
duty “giraffe” truck. With a 70-
ft. long articulated boom, the
new lifting equipment will be li-

four of its species, which have
a reaching capacity of only 35
feet.

A Mobile "Hi-Ranger" Aerial
Tower, it was acquired by the
Mechanical - Engineering Divi-

Division. It will also be used ex-
tensively by the Equipment Ins-
pection Section personnel. One
of the most modern lifting equip-
ment now on the market, this
unit is mounted on a Ford-ma-
nufactured chassis while the
superstructure is made by Hobbs
International of Connecticut,
U.S.A. The unit includes a 700-
Ib. capacity hydraulic bucket
which can accommodate two
men at a time with their required
tools and equipment.

Designed especially for use at
high elevations, it is most suit-
able here at Lago for inspect-
ion and repair work on tanks,
and other hard-to-reach high
structures. At the same time, it
eliminates the need for time-
consuming scaffold installation
and provides a much faster
operation. Easy to operate, this
"giraffe’’ has three lever con-
trols at the platform of the
truck to regulate vertical, hori-
