Homing Pigeons Fight Weather
To Exchange Freedom for Loft

A very interesting hobby of
which relatively few people know
about is no doubt: racing hom-
ing pigeons. It is an exciting and
suspense-packed sport which is
practiced by quite a few people
in the Antilles. As a matter of
fact, the Aruba Carrier Pigeon
Club (Aruba Postduivenvereni-
ging) was organized in 1967. It is
at present presided by William L.
Philips of the Materials Section’s
Catalogs Group, and numbers
twenty-three active members.
Also a long-time member of the
club is another Lago employee,
Celestino Quandus, an Admini-
stration Clerk in the Industrial
Services, whose son is also a
pigeon fancier.

The sport of racing pigeons
is practiced by adults as well
as children and doesn't require
much time or patience. The hom-
ing pigeon is essentialy a rac-
ing pigeon with a strong instinct
to return home. They invariably
return to their lofts or coops,
for two very important reasons:
the natural urges of hunger and
thirst and that of reproduction.

The homing pigeon is not an
ordinary pigeon. To the untrain-
ed eye, it looks like almost any
other of its species, but physi-
cally there is a difference in the
shape of its head. A good rac-
ing pigeon must be able to with-
stand strain in all kinds of
weather, that’s why its physical
condition is very important, be-

cause it must have endurance.

When the racing pigeon is
three days old, a plastic ring
with a serial number is placed
on one leg to identify him to
his owner. This number is regis-
tered, and the owner keeps a
card bearing proof of owner-
ship. When racing the pigeon,
a rubber ring is placed around
its leg. The speed at which he
returns to his home is measured
by a special clock, or timer. The
rubber ring is removed from its
leg and clocked. Its arrival home
is considered when it actually
enters the loft.

Aruban Pigeon Fanciers race
their pigeons almost weekly by
sending them in boxes to Cura-
cao. Upon arrival at Hato, they
are let loose, and their flight
back home begins. Most of them
return in one hour's time, espe-
cially if weather conditions are
favorable. The record set here
in Aruba is that of 45 minutes.
If the weather is bad, however,
they sometimes end up on the
neighboring islands, or maybe
get lost in Aruba, due to sheer
exhaustion.

Whoever finds a pigeon with
an identification ring on its leg,
should call Mr. Philips on 9-2316
and he will return the pigeon
to its owner. Mr. Philips also
welcomes new members in the
Aruba Carrier Pigeon Club.

Postduifnan Ta Lucha Contra Tempo,
Ta Nenga Libertad Pa Nan Jega Cas

Un hobby masha interesante
di cual relativamente poco hende
sabi di dje indudablemente ta:

suspenso cual ta ser practica
door di basta hende aki den An-
tillas. En realidad, e Aruba Car-

An ad "Now What's Your Ex-
cuse?” caught the attention of
John (Jack) V. Friel, a Lago an-
nuitant who left Lago on May 1,
1965 as Industrial Relations Ma-
nager. The ad "seemed to be
speaking directly to me”, Mr.
Friel recalls.

He clipped the coupon ac-
companying the ad of Sacred
Heart University of Bridgeport,
Connecticut, took the examina-
tions of SHU’s College Level
Examination Program (CLEP),
and found himself with 42 hours
of college credit. Last summer
he signed up for four courses at
Sacred Heart University and ad-
ded 12 more credit hours to
his total. The program also en-
abled him to count 18 otherwise
meaningless credit hours he
earned by attending New York
University at night back in 1932-
1933.

Realizing that a college de-
gree was well within his grasp,
Jack Friel registered as a full-
time student at SHU last Sep-
tember. He is scheduled to gra-
duate next December with a
bachelor of science degree in
history. Named to the dean's
list this spring with a perfect 4.0
average, Mr. Friel also is a mem-
ber of Delta Epsilon Sigma,SHU
honor society.

Now 63, Mr. Friel enjoyed a
successful career in the field of
personnel administration and ge-
neral business management,
first with Standard Oil Company
of New Jersey, (now Exxon Com-
pany), later with Lago in Aruba,
and most recently with Com-
munications Satellite Corpora-

tion (Comsat) in Washington,
D.C.
After retiring to Connecticut

(Butterfield Road, Route 3 New-
ton), Mr. Friel began working
with people in Waterbury’s in-
ner city who were seeking their
high school equivalency diplo-
ma. Probably mindful of the
saying "He who dares to teach
should never cease to learn” and
spurred by the ad about CLEP,
his decision was made to follow
professional training in the field.

In a letter to the director of
CLEP last fall, Mr. Friel com-
mented: "Much as | have enjoy-
ed retirement, | can't recall any-
thing | have enjoyed more than
the renewed challenge of aca-
demic studies, the joy of being
with (and being so surprisingly
accepted by) my much-younger
classmates, and the knowledge
that in about 15 months | need
no longer be termed a 'self-
made man’.”

As to his future plans, Mr.

Starting with the August 10, 1973 issue, the Aruba Esso News
will be mailed to the home address of every Lago employee.
This step is being taken in response to frequent complaints

from employees stating that they cannot obtain a copy of the

The new system is believed to assure that each employee

Willlam and Celestino show the pigeons’ strong wings. The homing
plgeons must be in excellent physical condition for long races.

William y Celestino ta mustra e palomanan halanan fuerte. E postduif
mester ta den excelente condicion fisico pa pustamento largo.

Homing Pigeons Fight Weather
To Exchange Freedom for Loft

A very interesting hobby of
which relatively few people know
about is no doubt: racing hom-
ing pigeons. It is an exciting and
suspense-packed sport which is
practiced by quite a few people
in the Antilles. As a matter of
fact, the Aruba Carrier Pigeon
Club (Aruba Postduivenvereni-
ging) was organized in 1967. It is
at present presided by William L.
Philips of the Materials Section’s
Catalogs Group, and numbers
twenty-three active members.
Also a long-time member of the
club is another Lago employee,
Celestino Quandus, an Admini-
stration Clerk in the Industrial
Services, whose son is also a
pigeon fancier.

The sport of racing pigeons
is practiced by adults as well
as children and doesn't require
much time or patience. The hom-
ing pigeon is essentialy a rac-
ing pigeon with a strong instinct
to return home. They invariably
return to their lofts or coops,
for two very important reasons:
the natural urges of hunger and
thirst and that of reproduction.

The homing pigeon is not an
ordinary pigeon. To the untrain-
ed eye, it looks like almost any
other of its species, but physi-
cally there is a difference in the
shape of its head. A good rac-
ing pigeon must be able to with-
stand strain in all kinds of
weather, that’s why its physical
condition is very important, be-

cause it must have endurance.

When the racing pigeon is
three days old, a plastic ring
with a serial number is placed
on one leg to identify him to
his owner. This number is regis-
tered, and the owner keeps a
card bearing proof of owner-
ship. When racing the pigeon,
a rubber ring is placed around
its leg. The speed at which he
returns to his home is measured
by a special clock, or timer. The
rubber ring is removed from its
leg and clocked. Its arrival home
is considered when it actually
enters the loft.

Aruban Pigeon Fanciers race
their pigeons almost weekly by
sending them in boxes to Cura-
cao. Upon arrival at Hato, they
are let loose, and their flight
back home begins. Most of them
return in one hour's time, espe-
cially if weather conditions are
favorable. The record set here
in Aruba is that of 45 minutes.
If the weather is bad, however,
they sometimes end up on the
neighboring islands, or maybe
get lost in Aruba, due to sheer
exhaustion.

Whoever finds a pigeon with
an identification ring on its leg,
should call Mr. Philips on 9-2316
and he will return the pigeon
to its owner. Mr. Philips also
welcomes new members in the
Aruba Carrier Pigeon Club.

Postduifnan Ta Lucha Contra Tempo,
Ta Nenga Libertad Pa Nan Jega Cas

Un hobby masha interesante
di cual relativamente poco hende
sabi di dje indudablemente ta:
pustamento di postduif. Esaki ta
un deporte excitante y yen di
suspenso cual ta ser practica
door di basta hende aki den An-
tillas. En realidad, e Aruba Car-
rier Pigeon Club (Aruba Post-
duivenvereniging) a ser organi-
za na 1967. Actualmente e tin
como president William L. Phi-
lips di Materials Section su Ca-
talogs Group, y e ta conta bin-
titres miembro activo. Tambe un
miembro di hopi tempo den e
club ta otro empleado di Lago,
Celestino Quandus, un Admini-
stration Clerk den Industrial Ser-
vices, kende su yiu tambe ta
practica e deporte cu postduif.

E deporte di pustamento cu
postduif ta ser practica door di
adultonan como tambe mucha-
nan y esey no ta requerf mucho
tempo ni pasenshi. E postduif
ta esencialmente un paloma pa
pustamento cu un instinto fuer-
te pa bolbe cas. Nan ta bolbe
invariablemente na nan cas of
hokki, pa dos motibo masha im-
portante: e impulso natural di
hamber y sed y esun di repro-
duccion.

E paloma mensahero no ta un
paloma comun. Pa esnan cu no
sabi, e parce cualkier otro di su
especie, pero fisicamente tin un
diferencia den e forma di su ca-
bez. Un bon postduif mester
por resisti den tur sorto di tem-
po, ta pesey su condicion fisico
ta masha importante, pasobra e
mester tin resistencia.

Ora cu un postduif tin tres
dia di edad, un renchi di plastic

cu un number di serie ta ser
poni rond di su pia pa identifi-
que'le na su donjo. E number aki
ta registra, y e donjo ta tene un
carchi como prueba. Ora cu tin
pustamento cu postduif, un ren-
chi di rubber ta ser ponf rond
di su pia. E velocidad cu cual
el ta bolbe su cas ta ser midi
door di un oloshi especial. E
renchi di rubber ta ser kita for
di su pia y ta ser hinca den e
oloshi pa registra e ora. Su ye-
gada na cas ta ser considera
ora cu actualmente e drenta bek
den su cas.

Amantenan di postduif na
Aruba ta pusta nan palomanan
casi tur siman door di manda
nan den un caha pa Curagao.
Ora cu nan yega na Hato, nan
ta laga nan bai, y e ora ey nan
vuelo bek pa cas ta cuminza.

An ad "Now What's Your Ex-
cuse?” caught the attention of
John (Jack) V. Friel, a Lago an-
nuitant who left Lago on May 1,
1965 as Industrial Relations Ma-
nager. The ad "seemed to be
speaking directly to me”, Mr.
Friel recalls.

He clipped the coupon ac-
companying the ad of Sacred
Heart University of Bridgeport,
Connecticut, took the examina-
tions of SHU’s College Level
Examination Program (CLEP),
and found himself with 42 hours
of college credit. Last summer
he signed up for four courses at
Sacred Heart University and ad-
ded 12 more credit hours to
his total. The program also en-
abled him to count 18 otherwise
meaningless credit hours he
earned by attending New York
University at night back in 1932-
1933.

Realizing that a college de-
gree was well within his grasp,
Jack Friel registered as a full-
time student at SHU last Sep-
tember. He is scheduled to gra-
duate next December with a
bachelor of science degree in
history. Named to the dean's
list this spring with a perfect 4.0
average, Mr. Friel also is a mem-
ber of Delta Epsilon Sigma,SHU
honor society.

Now 63, Mr. Friel enjoyed a
successful career in the field of
personnel administration and ge-
neral business management,
first with Standard Oil Company
of New Jersey, (now Exxon Com-
pany), later with Lago in Aruba,
and most recently with Com-
munications Satellite Corpora-

tion (Comsat) in Washington,
D.C.
After retiring to Connecticut

(Butterfield Road, Route 3 New-
ton), Mr. Friel began working
with people in Waterbury’s in-
ner city who were seeking their
high school equivalency diplo-
ma. Probably mindful of the
saying "He who dares to teach
should never cease to learn” and
spurred by the ad about CLEP,
his decision was made to follow
professional training in the field.

In a letter to the director of
CLEP last fall, Mr. Friel com-
mented: "Much as | have enjoy-
ed retirement, | can't recall any-
thing | have enjoyed more than
the renewed challenge of aca-
demic studies, the joy of being
with (and being so surprisingly
accepted by) my much-younger
classmates, and the knowledge
that in about 15 months | need
no longer be termed a 'self-
made man’.”
