St. Theresa School "dressed up” on its 40th anniversary.

St. Theresa School Marks 40 Year
Of Dedicated Service to Community

A Holy Mass, a festive break-
fast for guests and special class-
room programs marked the
commemoration of the St. The-
resa School's 40th anniversary
on January 9.

San Nicolas’ oldest school was
built on the initiative of the
town’s first Parish Priest, Father
Hendriks. Soon after the Cath-
olic Church was built in 1931,
the need for a parish school be-
came evident, especially with
the ever-increasing population,
mainly due to the establishment
of Lago’s refinery. Previously,
children from the remotest area
of San Nicolas had to go to the
nearest school — often on foot
— at that time in far away Sa-
vaneta.

In the capable hands of the
Dominican Sisters, aided by stu-
dent-teachers, 273 children —
boys and girls — attended the

school on January 9, 1933. Since
then, the former students have
become parents and grandpar-
ents of present pupils, and many
are now prominent personalities
in the community.

A former student and flower-
girl when the building was de-
dicated is Mrs. Johanita Martis-
Maduro, who has been a teacher
at St. Theresa's for 28 years.
She is the wife of Thomas Mar-
tis, a sergeant in Lago-Police.
The teacher with the longest
service — almost forty years —
is Mrs. Christina van Arneman.

With the constant growth of
the oil town, the inhabitants al-
so increased, requiring the fur-
ther extension of the school in
1945. At present thirteen teach-
ers, headed by Principal Miss
Filomena Wong, run the all-girl
school daily dedicating their ef-
forts in forming new progressive
citizens.

“New Devices Enable Electricians
To Perform Their Job More Efficiently

Lago’s electricians working in
the Electric Shop recently ac-
quired several pieces of new
equipment to help them tackle
jobs on electric motors. This
work involves mostly dismantling
a motor, removing the bad wir-
ing and putting new wiring on
the rotor and coil. The new de-
vices the electricians now have
at their disposal include a coil
cutter and coil puller with a gas
burning device to soften the in-
sulation material, a coupling pul-
ler, which can also be used as
a press tool, an insulating paper
cutter and creaser, and the ne-
west of all, a coil winding ma-
chine with coil taping machine.
The Electric Shop also obtained
a number of smaller electrical
tools. These new tools required
an investment of $35,000.

The new tools, which are oper-
ated hydraulically, pneumatically
or electrically, permit the elec-
tricians to do their jobs more
rapidly, efficiently and safely. In

fact, the work of pulling the coil
wires, which formerly had taken
up to eight hours or even two
days, now requires only about
one hour. The new winding ma-
chine is fully automatic and is
equipped to handle all shapes
of coils from fractional horse-
power motors to some 100 HP
motors.

The most versatile of the new
tools is the pulling device. It is
capable of removing the coup-
ling, the end bell, the bearing,
the rotor and the coil of the
motor. This tool, used in com-
bination with an overhead chain
block, also serves for pressing
some of the motor parts into
place. It’s not only very useful
to the Electricians, but to the
Machinists as well.

All the’nine electricians in the
Electric Shop have been or are
being trained in the proper use
of the new devices. This train-
ing is given by Shop Supervisor
Arnold Beyde.

St. Theresa School "dressed up” on its 40th anniversary.

St. Theresa School Marks 40 Year
Of Dedicated Service to Community

A Holy Mass, a festive break-
fast for guests and special class-
room programs marked the
commemoration of the St. The-
resa School's 40th anniversary
on January 9.

San Nicolas’ oldest school was
built on the initiative of the
town’s first Parish Priest, Father
Hendriks. Soon after the Cath-
olic Church was built in 1931,
the need for a parish school be-
came evident, especially with
the ever-increasing population,
mainly due to the establishment
of Lago’s refinery. Previously,
children from the remotest area
of San Nicolas had to go to the
nearest school — often on foot
— at that time in far away Sa-
vaneta.

In the capable hands of the
Dominican Sisters, aided by stu-
dent-teachers, 273 children —
boys and girls — attended the

school on January 9, 1933. Since
then, the former students have
become parents and grandpar-
ents of present pupils, and many
are now prominent personalities
in the community.

A former student and flower-
girl when the building was de-
dicated is Mrs. Johanita Martis-
Maduro, who has been a teacher
at St. Theresa's for 28 years.
She is the wife of Thomas Mar-
tis, a sergeant in Lago-Police.
The teacher with the longest
service — almost forty years —
is Mrs. Christina van Arneman.

With the constant growth of
the oil town, the inhabitants al-
so increased, requiring the fur-
ther extension of the school in
1945. At present thirteen teach-
ers, headed by Principal Miss
Filomena Wong, run the all-girl
school daily dedicating their ef-
forts in forming new progressive
citizens.

“New Devices Enable Electricians
To Perform Their Job More Efficiently

Lago’s electricians working in
the Electric Shop recently ac-
quired several pieces of new
equipment to help them tackle
jobs on electric motors. This
work involves mostly dismantling
a motor, removing the bad wir-
ing and putting new wiring on
the rotor and coil. The new de-
vices the electricians now have
at their disposal include a coil
cutter and coil puller with a gas
burning device to soften the in-
sulation material, a coupling pul-
ler, which can also be used as
a press tool, an insulating paper
cutter and creaser, and the ne-
west of all, a coil winding ma-
chine with coil taping machine.
The Electric Shop also obtained
a number of smaller electrical
tools. These new tools required
an investment of $35,000.

The new tools, which are oper-
ated hydraulically, pneumatically
or electrically, permit the elec-
tricians to do their jobs more
rapidly, efficiently and safely. In

fact, the work of pulling the coil
wires, which formerly had taken
up to eight hours or even two
days, now requires only about
one hour. The new winding ma-
chine is fully automatic and is
equipped to handle all shapes
of coils from fractional horse-
power motors to some 100 HP
motors.

The most versatile of the new
tools is the pulling device. It is
capable of removing the coup-
ling, the end bell, the bearing,
the rotor and the coil of the
motor. This tool, used in com-
bination with an overhead chain
block, also serves for pressing
some of the motor parts into
place. It’s not only very useful
to the Electricians, but to the
Machinists as well.

All the’nine electricians in the
Electric Shop have been or are
being trained in the proper use
of the new devices. This train-
ing is given by Shop Supervisor
Arnold Beyde.
