2004 Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program Awareness Award
Introduction
The Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program (VICZMP) Awareness Awards
Program has been established to honor and recognize individuals and organizations of the U.S.
Virgin Islands for their dedication, outstanding contributions and commitment in helping the
Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program to manage, enhance and protect our coastal
and ocean resources for the future, while reducing conflict between competing land and water
uses.
Eligibility
The Awards Program is open to individuals, organizations, and government agencies,
except for the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' employees or families of
employees. Individuals, organizations and agencies cannot nominate themselves they must be
nominated by others. Candidates can receive an award in a category only once.
Judging Criteria
Effectiveness in advancing the goals of the Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management
Act; effectiveness in increasing public awareness of coastal issues; use of innovative approaches,
techniques or programs to advance the goals of the VICZMP.
Deadline
All nomination entries for the 2004 VICZMP Awareness Award must be received no
later than November 5, 2004.
Categories
Coastal Zone Person/Organization of the Year Award: To a deserving person or
organization, who has demonstrated the ability to effectively preserve the coastal and ocean
resources through environmental programs and/or dedicated work in the coastal zone, which
would promote an attitude of stewardship and responsibility to individuals in the community.
Coastal Zone School of the Year Award: To the school that have made significant
contributions to volunteer programs such as the annual coast weeks beach cleanup and other
environmental programs and projects relating to the preservation and protection of coastal and
ocean resources in the USVI.
Coastal Zone College Student of the Year Award: To a student of the University
of the Virgin Islands who used the benefit of their coastal/marine studies to implement technical
approaches to advancing the VICZMP through their involvement in coastal resources statistical
studies, water monitoring, etc.
