SILVERIO AMARO SERRANO
January 23, 1952 December 29, 1987
Silverio Amaro Serrano, "Chiquetin," was born in Culebra, Puerto Rico
on January 23, 1952. He was one of five children born to Felix Amaro
and Felicita Serrano de Amaro.
Silverio moved to St. Thomas at an early age and attended the George
Washington Elementary School. He was a graduate of the Charlotte Amalie
High School, Hotel Training Program, Class of 1971. The skills he learned there
took him into several supermarkets here on St. Thomas. Lucy's Markets,
Merchant's Market, Top Banana and Red Hook Market have all benefited
from his experience as he served them in positions of meat
cutter, assistant manager and manager.
On January 6, 1973, Silverio married Annetta Creque and from that
marriage came one son, Orlando, who was born on November 6, 1986.
Silverio loved his family dearly to the end. He was a big man with a big heart
full of love. for people particularly young people. He impacted positively
on many youths as he dedicated himself to the development of Pack 4, a
Cub Scout unit sponsored by the Wesley Methodist Church. His wife shared
this dedication with him. He loved and cared for the boys and they responded
to his leadership so strongly that when they were of age to move into Boy
Scouting, they were reluctant to leave their Cub Master and friend. In response
to the expressed desires of the boys Silverio moved for the establishment
of Troop 4, also sponsored by Wesley Methodist Church. His wife remained
with Pack 4 while he worked with Troop 4. Their combined efforts yielded
the largest Cub Scout/Boy Scout organization on St. Thomas during 1984-85.
Their combined efforts also brought about a first in scouting in St. Thomas
as these units were the first to execute an overnight camp out in an off-
island setting (Tortola, B.V.I.). Silverio received several certificates for Out-
standing Leadership and Achievement two very important areas in the
scouting mission.
Silverio Amaro Serrano was well-known, well-respected and well-loved
by many. May he rest in God's peace!
