Abstract: |
In a critique of 31 years of CARIFESTA, Creighton feels that the Festival has not yet fulfilled its vision to support the arts and artists and to socially unite the region. He analyzes factors that have impeded its success, such as political disunity and territorial conflicts in the Caribbean, confusion in communications, poor infrastructure in host countries, and others. However, to focus on the more fundamental problem, he paraphrases famous playwright, Derek Wolcott, who maintains that, rather than CARIFESTA's various Caribbean hosts supporting the arts and artists, they have betrayed them. Instead of being wasted, the money should be spent on the much deeper deficits in development and infrastructure in the region, which Wolcott feels underlie the lack of artistic patronage. In the end, the article's author still finds glimmers of optimism for the coming CARIFESTA in Suriname. |
