By Larry Griffin Herald Staff A Sanford call center company, Total Marketing Concepts, got a shock this week when a press release from a competitor falsely stated that they had shut down without warning. The competitor, Global Empire Corporation, claimed in the release that they would be providing jobs for every displaced TMC employee. The problem was that all of it was fiction. Although TMC did have financial issues in recent years stemming from debt, which led to changes in the corporate structure this year, officials involved in the situation say TMC is operating just fine these days. By Amy Anderson "The Hustle" (PG-13) -In this remake of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway) is an elegant and refined beauty who preys on slick, wealthy men. Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) is a flyby-the-seat-of-her-pants catfisher who dupes low-brow guys out of fistfuls of bucks. Both con women set up residence in the lovely and fictional French town of Beaumont-sur-Mer, but two hustlers in one town is one too many. Unable to share the wealth of deserving suckers, they make a deal: Con the ultimate mark -app developer Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) -and the loser has to leave town. There are some laughs for sure, but most of it tries way too hard to be clever or funny and ends up being neither. "A Dog's Journey" (G) -If something about this seems super familiar, you're right. It's a sequel to "A Dog's Purpose," and some of the players are the same. Josh Gad returns to voice Bailey the dog, who we follow as he hurtles through time, embodying different puppers along the way. Bailey starts out returned to her boy, Ethan (Dennis Quaid), but now watching over a new little kid: Ethan's granddaughter CJ. When CJ's mother takes her away from the farm, Bailey journeys again through lifetimes to find his girl and watch over her. If you cried at the first one, you'll cry at this one, too. It's simplistic but still sweet, and watchable by any age group. "Brightburn" (R) -Here's an interesting take on the superhero genre: a horror story. A baby boy falls to Earth inside a downed spaceship, landing on a farm in Kansas. A couple, Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman), take in the boy they name Brandon (Jackson Dunn) and raise him as their own. They hide the ship in the barn. As the boy approaches puberty, he begins to come into his innate powers and sets off on a rampage worthy of a 12year-old antihero, all the while egged on by the hidden spaceship's murderous message. "The Tomorrow Man" (PG-13) -Two eccentrics find love in the grocery aisle in a freshman effort by writer/director Noble Jones. John Lithgow is Ed, a doomsday-prepping, checkwriting, cable-news watching, chatboard-loving retiree whose internet handle is "Captain Reality." He's a little delusional and a little sad. Enter Ronnie (Blythe Danner), a peculiar and spacey hoarder who is a vision in flowy skirts and baggy sweaters. Ed discovers Ronnie in the local grocers buying tuna cans and batteries. Must be a match, eh? The pair interact and showcase their numerous oddball tics and eccentricities. Wynn, III Adora Obi Nweze, NAACP State President THE ARREST REPORT Wrong house Longwood police responded to a home on Bistline Avenue after someone reported a stranger at their front door. Police said when they arrived a man was sleeping in front of the front door of the residence. The man would not answer any questions and could not provide any reason for being at the home, despite having a Winter Springs address. When police spoke with the homeowner they said the man had been peeking into windows and attempted to open the front door. Brian Beasley, 32, of Winter Springs, was charged with loitering and taken to the Seminole County jail. Who needs permission? Oviedo police were called to a home on Broadway Street after someone reported a physical altercation. When police arrived they found a victim, who had been attacked by another man. However the man had left the residence. Police said they were aware that the man was not allowed to be there, as he had been trespassed from the residence back in May. Later, police saw the man back at the residence and when they asked him who gave him permission to be there he responded, Colt 45. On the way to jail he also made threats to the arresting officer. Lucas Reese, 38, of Oviedo, was charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing and threatening a public servant. Theres been a mis-steak Sanford police responded to a home after someone reported a domestic incident with a machete. When police arrived a man said his brother and he were arguing over a steak that had been taken from the refrigerator. The mans brother first threw a spatula at him, then grabbed a machete and began chasing the man around the house. The man tried to hide in one room, but the brother stuck the machete through the crack in the door and continued to try to cut the man. When police asked the brother about the incident he said, I didnt do nothing. Phillip Thomas, 29, of Sanford, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence battery. Sisterly love Sisters dont always get along. Deputies learned this when they responded to a home in Midway after a reported stabbing. The victim told deputies her and her sister were in an argument over the kids in the home and the argument turned physical. At that point her sister grabbed a knife and stabbed her under the arm. Joetta Holloman, 49, of Syracuse, N.Y., was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Good hiding place Police responded to a hit-andrun in Oviedo when they learned a woman driving a white Honda Pilot had rear ended a vehicle and continued to drive. When police located the woman they said despite her front bumper being damaged and her airbag being deployed, she was unaware that she had been involved in a car crash. Police said the woman failed the sobriety tests and when they performed a search of her person they found two bottles of vodka in her underwear. Donna Murphy, 49, of Lake Mary, was charged with driving under the influence and hit and run. Batter up Lake Mary police went to a home after a domestic violence incident was reported. When police arrived they learned from a man in the home that he was in an argument with his girlfriend and she started chasing him around the house with a baseball bat. When they interviewed the woman she claimed she was only swinging the bat at the phone in his hand, not actually at him. Sherita Williams, 23, of Lake Mary, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence. A real artist Casselberry police stopped a man when it appeared he was drinking from an open container of alcohol in front of a shopping center. When police approached the man he admitted to drinking the beer and said he understood it was illegal to drink in public. The man told police he was painting earlier and drank a six pack of beer, but wanted a little more so he walked to the liquor store. Christopher Kieffer, 35, of Winter Park, was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol. Dognapper Deputies arrested a man that had fled to Michigan after his previous employer claimed he stole her dog. The woman, who was a breeder, paid the man to take care of her extremely rare Weaten pure bred Schnauzer named Asiago. The man stayed in a trailer on her property and one day she noticed he and his husband along with all of their belongs were gone. They had taken the dog as well. Numerous family members were contacted and deputies eventually located the men in Michigan with the dog. The employee admitted to deputies that he took the dog. Jacob Lauer, 26, of Daytona Beach, was charged with grand theft of a K9. COUCH THEATER -VIDEO/DVD PREVIEWS Universal Pictures Dennis Quaid in "A Dog's Journey"

Weekend: Aug. 25-27, 2019 PAGE 3 SANFORD HERALDOPINIONS MALLARD FILLMOREBruce Tinsley SNARKY McSNIDE SAYS, Greenland? Tweety, the President of the United States of America, recently mused about buying Greenland from Denmark. What does Denmark need Greenland for anyway? It is a drain on the Danes. In 1917, America bought another colony, the Danish Virgin Islands for $25 million in gold. Denmark, at the time was peddling them to anyone who wanted them, even the Germans. They were costing too much money from the homeland. In 1918, Iceland gained its independence from Denmark. There are as many people in Sanford as there are in all of Greenland. Maybe Tweety is on to something. Colonize the worlds largest ice covered island. Forget about Mars and the Moon. Look at the money that can be saved. With Al Gore's guidance, and a few dollars, the place can be made habitable for two Sanfords. The Greenies wanted Denmark to hand over enough cash for a new airport. When Copenhagen demurred, they went to China. That brought a visit from "Mad Dog" Mattis. Denmark then "found" the money for the airport. Nuuk, the capital has 18,000 citizens. In December there are no hours of sunshine. A big fat 0 If Trump or a successor does buy the place we can send settlers from Newark to Nuuk. That would be, in fact or in truth, a true culture clash. Passing Laws, Passing Taxes and Passing the Buck By Veronique de Rugy. What do the French digital services tax, the employers' share of payroll taxes and the corporate income tax all have in common? They are rarely shouldered by those entities and individuals targeted by legislators. In fact, one of the most important things to know about taxes is that the people who actually write the checks to the Internal Revenue Service (or to its French equivalent) are seldom the ones who actually shoulder its burden. In 2004, economist Stephen Entin wrote, "The economic burden of a tax frequently does not rest with the person or business who has the statutory liability for paying the tax to the government." That's because taxes are paid only by flesh-and-blood individuals. The actual incidence of any tax is not determined by the formalities of the tax code but, rather, by the realities of markets specifically, by how sensitive buyers are to price changes, relative to sellers. It makes it difficult to fully predict the full impact of taxes, but as a general rule, it is rarely what politicians think. Take, for example, the employer's statutorily stipulated share of the payroll tax. On paper, workers and employers each pay 7.65% of the employee's salary and wages. Employers send their portion of the tax as well as the one collected from their employees to the government. But this fact doesn't tell us anything about the tax's true burden. Economic research shows that employers shift the burden of the payroll to their employees by decreasing workers' wages by almost 7.65%. So the next time you hear someone announce that they want to enact a federal paid leave policy to be paid for by increasing the payroll tax, ask yourself whether it makes sense for the government to give to workers with one hand and then to take from the same workers with the other hand. This is precisely what will happen. Employees end up paying their share of the payroll tax increase, in addition to paying -through lower wages -their employers' share. Payroll taxes are extremely regressive, disproportionately impacting low-income earners, so any hike in such taxes will hit those workers especially hard. That includes, of course, the workers that government paid leave policies are supposed to help the most. What about the corporate income tax? From Senators Elizabeth Warren to author Marianne Williamson, Democratic presidential candidates have been telling workers that, if elected, they'll repeal President Donald Trump's 2017 tax reform. That includes repealing the corporate income tax rate reduction from 35% to 21%. If that happens, these candidates assert, corporations will foot more of the tax burden and, thus, lead to a more equitable world. Don't fall for it. First, corporations don't pay taxes. People do. In this case, economists have figured out that a big chunk of the additional tax burden will be shouldered by workers and shareholders (if you have a retirement plan, that means you). What economists can't seem to agree on is the degree to which workers are burdened. Estimates range from 66% to 100% of the tax falling on workers in the form of lower wages. Democratic candidates should think about this large burden when calling for a restoration of the 35% corporate tax rate. Finally, France's government has announced that it will impose a 3% digital tax on the revenue of American tech giants like Facebook, Google and Amazon. The rationale is that it's supposedly necessary to make internet companies pay their "fair share" of taxes. But if that's the true objective of this blatant extraterritorial tax grab, it'll completely miss the mark. Big tech firms won't ultimately shoulder that tax -consumers will. Consider Amazon. That tax will force the company to reduce its capital investments. Less investment means less production, lower productivity, fewer jobs and higher prices for consumers. This prediction is consistent with a recent report by Deloitte, which finds that big tech companies will pay only 5% of the tax. The rest of the tax burden will be passed along to consumers who use the digital platforms. The bottom line is that nobody can determine who truly bears the burden of a tax just by looking at where or on whom it is initially imposed, despite what the tax is called. Politicians better learn that lesson, unless they want to continue hurting the people they claim they want to help. By Keith Roach, M.D. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old man in excellent overall health. Routine bloodwork recently showed an elevated potassium level of 5.6. For the most part, I follow a vegetarian diet, which includes a number of very healthy foods that also happen to be high in potassium. I exercise regularly. Two years ago, my level was 4.9. My cardiologist stopped my metoprolol, as he said that could have pushed up the potassium, and he felt that based on my routine tests it was safe to stop it. I also stopped the 500-mg turmeric supplement I was taking, as a precaution. I take no other drugs. I'd hate to have to give up bananas and the other fruits that contain potassium, which I eat in moderation as part of my regular diet. Do you think the 5.6 level is cause for concern, and could you make a recommendation? -V.D. ANSWER: A potassium level of 5.6 is still in the normal range in my hospital's laboratory. Although metoprolol can raise potassium, it's not one of the medicines that is very likely to do so, such as an ACE inhibitor or spironolactone. Some people just have a high normal potassium. Turmeric, on the other hand, has lots of potassium, so stopping that was reasonable. I would recommend that you not worry too much about the potassium and keep up your diet, including fruits in moderation. In addition to avoiding turmeric, I would recommend that you avoid salt substitutes, since they have very high amounts of potassium. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am fortunate enough to be a healthy and well 81-year-old woman. I take vitamin D, and exercise daily with walking and yoga. My recent bone density test showed my Tscore for the hip at -2.2 and spine at -3.2. My primary doctor insists that I take Prolia or Boniva. I am reluctant to do this, as I am aware of the side effects and don't trust the ultimate results of the medication. Nutrition centers have recommended calcium supplements. Your help would be greatly appreciated. -L.B. ANSWER: Anyone can get an estimate of his or her risk for fracture using the FRAX calculation tool at www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX. I made a few assumptions with the information you gave me and estimated your risk of a hip fracture in the next 10 years as 6%, and any major osteoporotic fracture as 17%. A medication like Boniva would be expected to reduce your risk to something like 4% and 14%. Prolia has been shown to reduce risk of vertebral and hip fractures, and the decreased risk of vertebral fracture might be even greater with this drug (perhaps 4% hip and 8% total), although Prolia and Boniva have not been directly compared. Guidelines would clearly recommend medication for you. Calcium alone is unlikely to significantly reduce your risk of fracture. "Insist" is a strong word, but given the reduction in your relatively high fracture risk, I would suggest that you reconsider. Boniva is given once monthly and Prolia twice yearly. The side effects are mild for most people. Taking the medication for three to five years is very reasonable, after which you'd re-evaluate. I hope this information makes it easier for you to make the right decision for yourself. The press release from Global Empire says that the company closed due to unforeseen circumstances and ongoing financial troubles, and that Global Empire has stepped in and taken over. Global Empire, according to the press release, employs 2,600 employees at call centers around the world. The press release assures employees that operations will continue and asks everyone to please bear with us over the next two week transition period. Also, the press release asks employees to pay outstanding invoices to TMC to Global Empire from now on. Attorney Justin Luna is representing Delaware-based Big Elk Funding LLC, who are lenders helping TMC with investment in the company. Luna told the Sanford Herald hed never seen anything like Global Empires press release, and was in the process of filing legal action against the company on Thursday. Ive never seen something so blatantly false, he said. Court documents show numerous lawsuits against TMC in the last three years, from various companies and entities they had entered into contract with and failed to pay in a timely manner, including Big Elk. Big Elk had lent TMC over $7 million to help them out. Big Elk decided in that lending process to purchase the company and oversee it from now on, according to court documents from this summer. Luna described TMCs financial issues for the last several years as the company having over-extended themselves. They tried to dive into too many different markets, and over-leveraged, he said. But the press release from Global Empire shook things up. It was sent to Total Marketing Concepts vendors and customers, Luna told the Sanford Herald. Global Empire is a competitor. This is muddying the waters, and could get some customers nervous to jump ship. Luna said he had attempted to contact Global Empire, but had been unsuccessful as of Thursday. The phone was a dead line, he said. Through email, I never got a response. Global Empire also did not respond to multiple calls and emails from the Sanford Herald. Luna said he hoped to settle the matter in the courts and get Global Empire to cease and desist. [Big Elk] is trying to help Total Marketing Concepts, he said. Their value, from a lenders perspective, is only preserved if theyre making money. If it goes dark, their value goes to zero. The current head of TMC is Kelly McKenna, who was brought in as Chief Restructuring Officer. McKenna comes from a firm called Capstone Leadership Group, which specializes in transitional work for companies like TCM which needed financial outside assistance. McKenna said he also had never seen anything like Global Empires press release, calling it egregious and fraudulent, and questioning whether the company was even truly legitimate. He said the press release had been full of errors. Its like getting the email from South Africa asking where do I send the gold, McKenna said. Ive done so many of these corporate restructurings, and Ive never seen anything like this. McKenna said TCM was doing well, with 266 employees and looking to hire more for the upcoming holiday season, which would be busy this year. Were a call center, inbound and outbound, he said. We have seasonal business, and also heavily political business, during a presidential campaign, we have a lot of calls about soliciting for campaign donations and PAGE 6 Weekend: Aug. 25-27, 2019SANFORD HERALD TMC Continued from Page 1 largest Facebook group, Reichert said she feels shes well known in the community. I feel people have a good idea of who I am, she said. Peoples opinion will depend on what they want in a candidate. Im very philanthropic, I care about the community. I love the people in it. Im very involved. She told stories of the strength of the Oviedo community, saying that whenever there was a call for charity or donations, she saw everyone in the community pitching in. On the issues, she said she hoped to bolster the citys comprehensive plan, adding that not much about the city needs to be fixed, though traffic was an issue. Our city functions efficiently, she said. Traffic is a hot topic. But thats a matter of how much power do we have? We dont have a lot of roads we own those are owned by Seminole County or the Department of Transportation. But she said that just underscored a larger issue she would tackle as mayor, which was working efficiently with both the county and DOT, which she said shed make a top priority. Asked what she thought her role as mayor would be, she said it involved being the public face of the city. In Oviedo, the mayor is just another city council member, she said. Their vote counts the same as any city council members. The mayor is just a figurehead. How I envision an effective mayor is representing the city in a positive light. Core was unavailable to speak with the Sanford Herald on Friday, but his Facebook page lays out a few of his key points: promoting responsible development, preserving historic Oviedo and fostering a culture of community. He says in comments that hell begin to lay out his platform and that he has experience meeting with officials and paying attention to city issues. Core, who moved to the city in 1994 from Alabama, spent much of his working career in project management for Lockheed Martin. Now, he works with Strategy Enabled Solutions, a consulting firm in the aerospace industry. In a video posted to social media, Core praises the sense of community in Oviedo. Years ago, I personally went through a very difficult time with health problems, he says. I was at home a lot, I couldnt get out of bed for a year. During that time, the community and our church and the school and our neighbors just responded to me in a way that was remarkable. They were bringing meals, expressing concern, taking our kids places. It was a beautiful thing on how our community works together, and cares for each other. Sladek, who the Sanford Herald has interviewed previously, said her campaign was going well so far. Her campaign is based around being a candidate for the people by opposing over-development and bringing more transparency to City Halls dealings. When she initially entered the race, she was the only candidate and current Mayor Dominic Persampiere was still thought to be running, but Persampiere dropped out and then the other candidates entered in. The interest in her campaign since then, she said, has been heartening. Before, I thought some people might be supporting me because they didnt like the old guy, she said. But people are actually not doing it for a mean reason they actually like me. On the role of mayor, Sladek said she thought it important to maintain good relations throughout the community, despite the Mayoral seat not being more powerful than other council members. The Mayor serves on several boards, such as Metro Plan and others, she said. I chime in at those board meetings. I think that gives me an edge over the other candidates. Ive been at the meetings. I already know I like the job. OVIEDO Continued from Page 1 Magdalen Catholic School at around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday and spoke with the principal. She told them that shed spoken with a group of parents regarding information from a chat between numerous sixth graders, in which one of them had reportedly made a threat. Police saw the message, which read: Next person to say something is the first person I will shoot on the school shooting that will take place this Friday... Kate youre getting shot for fun I cant stand that fish face. They investigated the matter, speaking with the sixth grader in question and her parents. What came out was that the previous night, the sixth grader and her sister, a 16-year-old student of Lyman High School, were doing homework. The sixth graders phone kept going off as messages from a group chat came in. The sister then took the phone and, unbeknownst to the sixth grader, sent the threatening message to the group chat. Police went to Lyman High the next day and found the sister, who was visibly upset and stated that she knew why they were speaking with her, according to the arrest report. They determined she hadnt actually intended to carry out the threat. However, based on the evidence that the sister had sent the threatening message, she was arrested and taken to the juvenile justice center. She was charged with making written threats to kill or injure people. A press release from the Altamonte Springs Police Department said theyre committed to protecting the citys schools and residents in general. Although detectives determined that [the suspect] did not intend to carry out the threat, Altamonte Springs takes any type of threat made toward anyone, including our students and staff, seriously, the press release reads. Any threat will be investigated and not be tolerated. The Thunderbirds, in existence since 1953, represent the 600,000 men and women of the United States Air Force, and they put on shows that demonstrate the capabilities of modern aircrafts and the skills required to pilot them. A press release from the OSIA collects quotes from the leaders of every entity involved. Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett says the show will be above and beyond anything seen in the past. County Commission Chair Brenda Carey says the show will provide the educational aspects of aviation as well as an exciting airshow including The Thunderbirds, who will demonstrate their awesome skills with pride, precision and professionalism of American Airmen. Airport president Diane Crews said the opportunity would be great to thrill and delight audiences. A press release from Lockheed, the Thunderbirds are comprised of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and more than 120 enlisted personnel. The release goes on to describe the show as a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The four-jet diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of Air Force pilots, while the two solo aircraft highlight some of the extreme capabilities of the F-16. In all, the pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a single demonstration, the release reads. An aerial demonstration lasts 60 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for the ground show before takeoff. THREAT Continued from Page 1 AIR SHOW Continued from Page 1 TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
