Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the unempirical selection process of basketball teams for the NCAA Tournament. Every year thirty-seven teams are granted bids by the NCAA selection committee based on their success throughout the year. The objective is to choose the thirty-seven best teams remaining, however “best” is difficult to quantify. This study looks at the at-large bids given from 2001-2010, along with variables such as RPI, enrollment and prestige in order to determine how strongly these factors, if at all, influence the selection committee. The results suggest that the committee is indeed swayed some of these factors, a previous assumption which holds when faced with empirical data. ( en )
