As you can see. , we are considerably larger than last month, and much, of the paper is devoted to the current election. We hope that this proves to he a helpful guide to many of those who do not know whom to vote for. When we updated Thurlow Weed's artiole (page 31) on the proposed filling at the salt ponds for a Weather Service facility oust south of the west end of the airport runway, we did not have a copy of Robert Mannix ' appraisal for the Department of Environmental Regulation. We received it just before press time. Some excerpts: "The proposed project appears to be the initial phase of a master plan for development depicted on the application vicinity map. " "The general area is a shallow Bait marsh which exhibits environmental stress conditions largely due to the restriction of surface tidal flow by filling for the airport runway and adjoining roads." "The proposed project involves the elimination of a large portion of a stressed, backwater marsh presently utilized primarily as habitat for shore and migratory waterfowl." "Roseate spoonbill, white ibis, reddish and common egrets, great white and blue herons, stilt, terns, and gulls were observed inhabitating the marsh during my inspections." (Ed. note: all but. the stilt and gulls are on the 'dare and Endangered Species list prepared by the Florida Department of Natural Resources. See page 31 footnote for others.) "...the long-term impact in terms of habitat potential is a major concern. " "Based on biological and water quality considerations, this project is not recommended for approval as presented." It should be understood that this recommendation does not mean that the permit will be denied, although it does indicate that the DER does not look favorably on the proposed project. We will continue to monitor the situation . Wright Langley, a highly respected member of the community ..and former Key West Bureau Chief of the Miam i Herald, , has received the appointment of director* of the Key West Historical Preservation Board. A good man for the job. We received another letter from one of "Toofey 's" children who is now living at the Conch Train Depot on Flagler Avenue. We hope to share this letter with you next issue. Hey, when is the Casa Marina going to open up? , Last November, Solare s Hil l was twent pages long; this issue we're thirty-six! We've come a long way. Thanks to everyone for your support. I'd better admit that I'm too tired and punchy to write this column properly. This is the night before I drive up to Boca Raton to print the paper, and we're still working at it. And if I.keep writing, I'm going to make mistakes that Richard Marsh will catch and make me correct. That will slow everything up too much, and I've promised to deliver this issue to the people of Key West by Friday, October 88. So no more for now. See you next month. Cover artist this month is Tom Pope. ^SUfdj OU T <% > potft C**JCdL> HER E I S $10.0 0 FO R SUBSCRIPTIO N T O 1 1 ISSUE S O F SOLARE S HILL . NAM E ADDRES S CIT Y THIS .
