In the past, we have given much more room to the printed word than to illustrations. This time we are giving more room to our artists and we like the results. I think thatthe center fold story is a good example of this, and I hope that you like -this approach. Another innovation this time is •the printing of a short story. We tend to shy away from fiction, but the fact that this was written by our own Richard Marsh and the fast that it is a fine story have given us the courage to go ahead. This issue has more ads per page than we have had before. Quite frankly, Solare s Hil l needs the revenue to meet its obligations. In the summer we have fewer advertisers and we charge less for our ads. This tends to set us back a bit. Hopefully, in the "Winter Season" we will loosen up some and have more copy and art proportionately than is in this issue. We were going to have a report on the filling in.of the salt ponds behind Key West By-The-Sea, but our writer popped off to Captiva Island for a vacation and forgot to leave us his report. We will have it next issue. Our next edition of Solare s Hil l will be out a few days early. Election day is the first day of November this year, and we will be endorsing some can• didates for the up-coming election. Obviously we want everyone to have a chance to read our endorsements before the election, so you can look for your November paper toward the end of October. The past-few months we have had a variety of people lay-out the paper. All have done a fine job. In August, Gary Smith did it; in September, Saottie Hillman and George Abb'ott; and this issue, Walt Hyla. All have been colleagues at one time or another at Greene. Street Graphics, and we are fortunate to have had this selection of outstanding professional people to help us with our paper. Tom Pope, our Art Director, should be back with us soon. Hey, we know that we left out some remarkable Key West dogs in our article a few months back. Write us if you feel that a super dog has been slighted two people wrote us about "Toofey" this issue, and we reprint their letters in the paper. See you next month -remember that we will be out early! Mon a Field s b y France s Signorell i The cover this time is by Sandy Juliano of Santon Studio. MEMBER MULTIPLE LISTING SERVICE poetry STILL AN ISLAND At doekside at the setting sun, Rhythms from the islands come, Drumbeat's island's heartbeat heard, She plays that flute just like a bird. Ah, we 're still an island yet Although it's easy to forget. 'Cause the bridge still brings America here. Still a mangrove ' e mystery's near And a snapper' s shadow when the water's clear The traffic noise on 1 collides With the silent coming of the tide. At 3:00 am the tide came high. I saw a tarpon's glowing eye -I saw h-is silver form go flashing Saw his head the surface slashing Saw shrimp and squid on the sea swell ridin' Saw all the life from the Gulf go glidin' Said a silent prayer of thanks For riches far too great for banks Swelled the sea's clean sweet salt vapor Saw an old man bicycling papers. Yes we are an island yet God forgive when we forget. by Jody Adams MUSIC ON THE WATERFRONT There is music on the waterfront for ears that would hear. Voices drift from boats on anchor and a gull is calling near. Rigging creaks on shrimpboats from a wake that's rolling by. Somewhere somebody 's pumping out and an ungreased block will cry. Row long would a musician Have to practice and rehearse To equal the moaning of a diesel in reverse"? by Jody Adams By chance a seed is cast to the wind It descends to the earth, determines its spot for•growth Gently nourished, it becomes a stem struggling against gravity. A small bud appears • and grows and flowers And slowly the petals are cast to the wind and scattered one by one Propelled in various directions by the winds of. change Sometimes, I wish we didn't have to be flowers. ..
