din e wher e th e su n set s pie r restauran t a t th e pie r hous e mote l entertainmen t nightl y reservation s (305 ) 294-954 1 Pi^rlesfeuran t Fro m th e Edito r Well, it's vacation time again! Solare s Hil l will not be published in July, but we will be back in August. We are skinny again, also. Ads predictably are down in this funny off-season month,' and we are 'A4 -pages long and a run of 10,000 copies compared to our big winter months, when we were SB pages long and 15,000 aopies. I ran into Margaret Pierce at the bank a few weeks ago, and she had something very nice to say about Solare s Hill . J asked her if she would put it in a letter and send it in to us. She did, and it reads as follows: Than k yo u ver y muc h fo r printin g th e articl e about th e Friend s o f th e Librar y an d ou r boot h a t th e Hig h Schoo l Fle a Market wher e w e sel l use d book s fo r th e benefi t o f th e Monro e Count y Publi c Library . Becaus e o f you r publicity , ou r profit s double d at th e ver y nex t sal e an d w e mad e th e mos t mone y i n ou r history . That was a very nice note to receive. It is continually amazing to me how one of the most popular and innocent diversions in Monroe County is constantly catching criticism from all sides. I'm talking about Flea Markets. I felt that the City of Key Vest did its citizens a signal disservice when it helped break up the Flea Market that met Sundays at Rest Beach. Rumblings of drug and weaponry and stolen goods sales were cheeked out at that Flea Market and found to be erroneous, Then the city ''* found ^outihat a Flea Market was. illegal at that location and closed it down. Well, as everyone knows, Flea Markets are alive and thriving at Poinciana, Key West High School and in the lot across from the city parking lot on Simonton Street. Too many people and agencies are helped and given pleasure in . to o many ways for this harmless Saturday and Sunday happening to be stopped. But there are more storm clouds on the horizon. The Monroe County Commissioners are now making noises about stricter licensing rules and much closer surveillance and closing down some of the existing Flea Markets. The reasons given are tha-t stolen goods are being sold openly at these markets and that local merchants have complained about new articles being sold there. I feel that there is little that can be done about stolen goods showing up at Flea Markets, other than having police make spot checks as they do at pawn shops. I tend to sympathise more with merchants who have paid for licenses and rent for building space, who feel that they are being undersold •by these Flea Market vendors who operate without overhead. Traditionally, a Flea Market sells used and unwanted goods that have stacked up in one's garage or attic, as well as handmade crafts and jewelry; it should not be an open air emporium for new goods. I'm sure there is a remedy for this particular abuse, but quite obviously the remedy is not to close down the markets. Why don 't some of the officials go out and see how. enjoyable these Saturday and Sunday outings are? They will be amazed to see how many, many of their friends are there having a good time. See''you in August. The cover this time is by David Wegman, cu 1M B I S OU R JPTIO N HER E I S $10.0 0 FO R M Y SUBSCRIPTIO N T O 1 1 ISSUE S O F SOLARE S HILL . Have you ever seen the beauty in flowers that grow? Have you ever seen the gracefulness in an eagle's flight? Or a crane,, the way it gently moves without disturbing or interrupting a thing in his path? Or have you ever just drifted off in thoughts of Love, for 'someone you oare for very much? Well, I have. And all of these things are just a small part of living. hut it would have been great, perhaps even grand, if I could have shared these things and lived these dreams with you. by Boy W. Cassell "Sun-Daze" i 've watched the sun form sparkles on the clear-cut crystal waves as diamonds dancing on the edge throughout a cloudless day. .. i've watched your expert fingers . let loose the great white sail as we skimmed the ocean 's distance, while the sky turned slowly pale... and lazily we lay back with sun caught in our eyes as the tiny boat sets out to sail to horizons in disguise. for the wind has gently tossed us to directions unforeseen... and i'd never trade away that day, for a hundred golden dreams. .. by Patti Brand ANGELC' S "CAS K TAKE OUT SERVICE AVAILABLE OPE N DAILY'TI L 4 A M 20 8 DUVA L ST .
