dio e wher e th e so n set s pie r restauran t a t th e pie r hous e mote l entertainmen t nightl y reservation s (805)294-954 1 Pie r 'Restauran t Fro m th e Edito r 'a I spoke to Gil Ryder about the Cattle Quarantine Station.Gil authored^ our first article against this facility • and has remained steadfastly opposed to it . He said that h& spoke to Tom Hayes,, Senator Lawton Chiles' aide, at a meeting held recently at City Hall for the airing of grievances against the station. Gil brought a few points to the attention of this official. He expressed worry about the stink that a wind out of the north could bring from the facility during the burning of the 5 tons of animal matter daily; further, that in case of disease all animals'would have to be incinerated within a sevenday period, and the total tonnage of dead animals would be astronomical; that there has never been a facility anything like this in the U.S., and that the original premise was that it was to be constructed on an isolated island away from population centers; that an issue of this importance should go to, '"a referendum; that he felt the Navy doesn't have the right to engage in real estate transactions. Gil said that he received a call from Washington from an aide in Chiles' office the other day. This person said (this is not a verbatim quote), "If during the course of construction or during the operation of the station it appears to be detrimental to the people of Key West, the government might step in to correct the situation, or., if necessary, to shut down the facility, " "At least there is an ear to hear us now in a high place," says Gil. We will write more on this subject as it comes in. Seven Key Westers have been honored by the U.S. Jaycees as outstanding young men in America. They are: Richard Louis Bancells, Jessie L. Briggs, Russell Leroy Brittain, Emigdio Antonio Gil, David Paul Horan, Alton Lawrence Weekley, and Leland Gilbert Roberts. Our congratulations to them all. No real news on Rest Beach yet. As our regular readers know, I have brought suit against the townhouae project there, asking that the existing structure be. torn down and the beach returned to its abate before the construction. A court date has yet to he. get. F.K.C.C. announced that the course "Hoots" is being offered again thin summer. Mr. Eldridge Curry will instruct the oouraa on Monday and Wednesday night a, starting on May 4 th. Our writer Malcolm lions, who wrote on using coconut juice ao a aura for a urinary infection last lasue, reports that it has been working beneficially for him and that he ia feeling much better.
