Florida International University Latin American and Caribbean Center, a Title VI National Resource Center, in conjunction with Miami Dade County Schools and the Digital Library of the Caribbean sponsored a Caribbean Challenge Teacher Training Workshop titled Using Digital Resources to Examine Race and Teach the Region on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. This lesson plan is a product of that training.

The Caribbean Challenge: Using Digital Resources to Examine Race and Teach the Region Teacher Training Workshop Lesson Plan Worksheet Created by: James N. Grande; Jose R. Alvarez; Kerly Perard; Debra H. Ramsay Title : Ten Years War Overview : Studying causes / effects, historical impacts and prominent figures arising from the Cuban 10 Years War Time Required : 2 days each class / writing 100 minutes each. Target Audiences : 8th Graders Materials required : Writing samples of Jose Marti, Maximilio Gomez Newspaper clippings from the time, maps, oratory samples Cross curricular connections : Literature (studying the poetry and writings of Jose Marti) Lesson O bjectives and Standards : Students will know the causes / effects, combatants, prominent figures, battle strategies of the 10 Years War


Teaching Activities : Break students into small groups to research, write about/summarize, the motives for each side in the 10 Years War. Assessments : List of names of prominent figures in the war, explaining which side they fought on, their motive, and contributions to the war. Timeline explaining events in chronological order. Additional comments and/or instructions : Compare motives of prominent figures in the ear and their associated political movements in the United States. Discuss connections and relationships between U.S. individuals/ Cuban individuals.
