rJ: am pleased for the opportunity to greet you today, as I assume the duties of Minister of Health and Environmental Services, for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Firstly, I wish to commend all nurses, for the invaluable contributions which they have made to health care over the past one hundred years, and thank you in advance for the contributions which you will continue to make, as you are often regarded as the backbone of our healthcare systems. The theme chosen by the International Council of Nurses for this year's celebrations "Nurses always there for you: caring for families", is indeed timely, as caring for families is a role intrin sic to nursing. Nurses provide care across the lifespan, and the family setting provides an oppor tunity to address the health needs of the family unit, and its individual members. Increasingly, a process of partnership, in which the family is actively engaged in its healthcare, is rep l acing the traditional approach to healthcare, where physicians and nurses are viewed as experts who decide what is good for the family and its members. Families want to be involved, and as informed consumers, are demanding a greater control of their care. The extent of fami l y invo l vement in health care can vary, depending on the situation or health problem. In situations involving minor acute problems, nurses generally focus on the individual. However, in chronic illness, serious acute problems, or lifestyle issues, nurses must involve the entire family in providing care. Because of their close interaction with clients and t heir families in all settings, nurses can help interpret people's needs and expectations, for healthcare. They must be involved in decision making at clinical practice level, as well as in management. As Minister of Health, I reaffirm the commitment of my government and my ministry to the pro motion and enhancement of the role of Nurses in our health care system, and welcome this opportunity to work with you toward the improvement of health for all Bahamians. I also extend best wishes for a successful month of activities and look forward to your continued active coop eration and support. The Rt. Honorable Dr. Marcus C. Bethel Minister of Health

We mus t co ntinue to articulate what nurses do b y m arke ting our professio n and educating the community. . . fflw o/ the Jl!Ui4e4 o/ the (i/peaking out for families on the occasion of International Nurses Day the International J Council of Nurses is pressing Policy makers in all countries to be more in tune with the health needs of families in designing public policy. "Society benefits in every way from health and social services that are designed to suit the needs of families." Health y public policy at the family or community lev el makes the healthy choices easie r for people to adopt by removing barriers." The aim of family -friendl y policy should be to enhance th e health and well being of the family and its individual members. Barriers to health include such thin gs as user fees, which can prevent poorer families from accessing health promotion and health facilities that are organised in a way that discourages access to health care. Family friendly policy also includes disease prevention services such as well-baby clinics, immunisation or nutritional counselling. For ICN, family-friendly health policy would provide health services that: Offer service hours suitable for working parents. Provide a relevant and adequate range of quality services Pr ovide complimentary services on the same day. For example, antenatal services should be provided on the same day as immunisation. This eliminates extra trips to health facilities and increases the lik elihoo d that infants will be vaccinated. Provide referrals from primary care to progressively higher levels of care. Do not have barriers to access to care, such as user fees or discriminatory proce dures. Have policies addressing the right to privacy and confidentia lity. Another key aspect of family-friendly health policy refers to creating family-friendly work places, which contribute to th e health of family members, especially children. For example workplaces designed to: Pro vide day-care facilities. If appropriate, assign women nearer to the nurseries where their children are kept. Provid e breaks and a lactation room for mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies at work. Nathalee Bonimy President, Nurses Association of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas
