Foreign Trade Developments

Seventh Annual North American International Livestock Exposition. The
exposition will take place at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in
Louisville, November 8-22. All major breeds of beef cattle, dairy cattle,
sheep and swine will be represented, as well as Quarter Horses. Over
12,000 entries are expected this year. A commercial exhibit area will
feature modern farm equipment and livestock supplies. The Kentucky
Department of Agriculture and Indiana Department of Agriculture will be
co-hosting a special International Reception Room for the foreign

U.S. Agricultural Exports to hit $40 billion in Fiscal 1980. With U.S.
agricultural exports in fiscal 1980 now expected to hit $40 billion, the
agricultural trade surplus will increase over 40 percent from last year to
over $22 billion. This price strength in export markets will carry over

into fiscal 1981; and with export volume likely to hold firm, the export
value may reach $40 to $45 billion. With imports of $17,to $19 billion,
the agricultural trade surplus will almost certainly approach $25 billion.

Japanese pork import control announcement. The Japan Ham and Sausage
Industrial Association has announced an appeal to use domestic pork and to
control pork importation on a voluntary basis. The association based its
announcement on the following: (1) future overproduction of domestic pork
market, (2) estimated decline of domestic pork prices, (3) rise in pork
prices in foreign markets. A "Voluntary" control has restricted the mlport
of pork in Japan since January 1, 1980. The action by the Japan Ham and
Sausage Industrial Association just extends the restriction on pork imports
beyond July 31, 1980.
