Foreign Trade Developments:
Soy protein approved for Italian processed foods. The Italian Ministry of
Health has authorized the trade and use of structured defatted soybean flour
and restructured soy protein concentrates for inclusion in processed foods.
Effective August 19, all food and meat products except canned meat, sausage and
salami can include up to 30 percent of total protein content in the form of
soy protein. For meat products incorporating soy flour and protein concentrates,
each 100 grams of such dry extender must be supplemented with 10 mg iron, 2
mg thiamine, 0.8 mg riboflavin, and 5 mg vitamin B 12. The decree, which
constitutes in effect a new law, provides for strict labelling requirements with
regard to soy protein presence. For meat products extended with soy protein,
labels must also state the percentage of vegetable protein to total protein
Japan reduces meat surcharges. The Japanese Government has again reduced the
surcharges applied to certain beef imports. The new surcharges, which became
effective July 1, average 175 yen per kilogram (about $.37 per pound), compared
with 330 yen per kilogram (about $.70 per pound) before the revision. This
is the second lowering of surcharges in 1979. The categories of beef imports
subject to the surcharges are special quotas (hotel, school lunch, Okinawa, and
cooked beef), the private trade portion of the general quota, and the allotment
to designated retail stores out of the general quota. These quotas account for
about 30 percent of Japan's beef imports.
