Foreign Trade Developments

A new Swiss labeling law for packaged goods goes into effect January 1, 1980.
Essentially it requires:

1. Labeling in one of the national languages of Switzerland--French, German, or

2. Definite identification of the product in the package.

3. Listing of all ingredients and additives in descending order of

These regulations apply to all "pre-packaged" foods.
Pre-packaged is described as follows:
"The sales unit, consisting of the food itself and its package, in which
the food has been packaged out of sight of the consumer, before offering
it to him for sale."

The Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) in cooperation with USDA/FAS,
is sponsoring its 5th International Food & Agricultural Trade Show, February 5-7,

2381 Mexican bean tender. On December 17, 1979, Compania Nacional de Subsistencias
Populares, a public agency of Mexico, intends to issue an Invitation for bids on
up to 70,000 metric tons of dry beans grown in the United States in 1979, including
pinto beans, pink beans, black beans, cranberry beans, small red beans, and red
kidney beans. Individual bids of less than 100 metric tons will not be accepted
