Foreign Trade Developments

Final call in SUSTA International Food Show. A limited number of exhibit booths
are still available for the 4th annual SUSTA International Food and Agricultural
Trade Show to be held in New Orleans, February 8-10, 1979. The show is sponsored
by the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and the Foreign Agricul-
tural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department ofAgriculture. Marketing personnel
from the 15 state SUSTA organization with assistance from FAS have personally
contacted the trade in 30 countries promoting this exhibit. It will be the largest
food and agricultural trade show in the United States devoted exclusively to for-
eigh buyers. To reserve an exhibit booth it is suggested that you contact the
following without delay: Herbert Stone, SUSTA, International Trade Mart, Suite 338,
2 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130. Telex: 584319 SUSTANLN. Phone:
(504) 568-5986.

Algerian agricultural imports. The ONACO (Office De Commercialisation) in Algeria
is hoping for direct contacts with American agricultural producers and exporters.
The office is in charge of importation of foodstuffs and basic agricultural
products. Because of markups and subsequent higher prices to consumers, they state
that any future business will be direct with U.S. primary suppliers rather than
European or other agents. Primary interest at the moment is in long term
contracts for tallow, sunflower oil, cheese, cane or beet molasses. Interested
suppliers are urged to get in direct contact with ONACO, 29, Rue Larri Ben M'Hidi,
Algiers, Algeria. Telex: 52882, 52991, 52992.

Mexican food study. A report entitled "Mexican Food Study" was recently published
by FAS as a cooperative project with the state departments of agriculture. The
report contains information on the economic and food marketing situation in
Mexico plus an assessment of marketing prospects for processed food items,---
which it concludes is limited at this time. It also contains a list of buyers and
end users of these items. To obtain a copy write the Export Trade Services
Division, Foreign Agricultural Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington,
D. C. 20250 or call (202) 447-3031.

Regulations on coloring matter in U.K. foods. Regulations have recently been
made which further amend the Colouring Matter in U.K. Food Regulations 1973.
The regulations provide for the addition to the permitted list of the yellow
food colour riboflavin-5'-phosphate and the deletion of the colouring matters
Orange G, Chocolate Brown FB and Channel Black form of Carbon Black. The sale,
consignment, delivery, importation or advertisement for sale of the three deleted
colours, and of foods containing them, will be prohibited with effect from January
1, 1979. Additional information might be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture
Fisheries and Food, Whitehall Place, London SW1A 2HH, England.

Processed Food Exhibits -- Amsterdam and Paris. Commercial firms are invited
to participate in two FAS sponsored exhibits in Europe this Spring. The first
will be held at The Crest Hotel in Amsterdam, May 30-31, 1979, with the second
being staged at The Paris Sheraton Hotel, June 5-6. Both of these markets
hold excellent opportunities for U.S. exporters of processed food items. The
participation fee is $200 for either exhibit, or $300 for participation in both.
Participants will be required to have a representative present. For further
information, Contact: Theodore Horoschak, Project Leader, Export Trade Services
Division, Foreign Agricultural Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wash-
ington, D. C. 20250, USA. Telephone: (202) 447-3031.

Nigerian import requirement. Effective January 1, 1979 the Central Bank of
Nigeria may require a report of findings from an independent agency certifying
the quantity and value of the products. The certification in the U.S. will be
done by the Superintendent Company, 17 Battery Place North, New York, N. Y. 10004,
telephone (212) 482-8700. The new requirement applies to all countries and the
Central Bank will determine the specific transactions requiring this certification.
According to Edward Frank of the Superintendent Company, his office will need an
authorization from the Central Bank for the certification together with four
copies of the Pro Forma invoice from the exporter. Presumably the fees will be
paid by the Central Bank.
