Foreign Trade Developments
World demand for U.S. agricultural products is expected to continue strong
during 1978/79, according to Thomas R. Saylor, Associate Administrator, Foreign
Agricultural Service, speaking at the November 13-16 National Food and Agriculture
Outlook Conference. Despite the record grain crop in the Northern Hemisphere, it
is projected that U.S. farm exports will exceed those of last year. Export ton-
nage is expected to change little, but prices for the major commodities may push
exports to another record export value of about $29 billion. That would be
6 percent greater than in fiscal 1978. Agricultural imports are forecast at
$14.1 billion, which would give us a record surplus in agricultural trade of
almost $15 billion.
Sales can be yours in our upcoming food shows in Tokyo and Hong Kong. The
International Food Exhibit in Tokyo, March 12-16, is in our largest overseas
food market and over 70,000 trade visitors are expected. Directly following
is a FAS sponsored food exhibit in Hong Kong, March 20-22. Both of these
markets offer excellent opportunities for a wide variety of processed foods.
The fee for Tokyo is $400 and Hong Kong $200. The fees include the exhibit
booths, advertising to bring buyers to the trade show, and other FAS exhibit
services. Exhibitor attendance is required. Get double returns for your
travel money by participating in both shows. Applications will be honored
on a first-come, first-served basis. For details and applications you should
contact Ted Horoschak, without delay. His address is FAS, U.S. Department of
