Chick Production

Chick output by hatcheries during July totaled 206, 384, 000 chicks
compared with 208, 729, 000 in July 1961. Production of broiler chicks,
at 182, 862, 000 was down 2 percent from July 1961. Eggs in incubators
on August 1 indicate that the hatch in August will be slightly below that
of a year ago. Production of broiler chicks January through July totaled
1, 329,111, 000, compared with 1, 367, 758, 000 during this period in 1961--
down 3 percent.

Egg-type chicks hatched in July totaled 23, 522, 000--up 10 percent
from July 1961. During the first 7 months of 1962, the hatch of egg-type
chicks totaled 389, 514, 000--down 7 percent from these months in 1961.
Eggs in incubators on August 1 indicate a larger egg-type hatch in August
1962 than last year.


Poult Production

The hatch of heavy breed poults during July totaled 5, 984, 000--down
1 percent from the hatch in July 1961. Output of heavy white breeds at
2, 844, 000 was down 7 percent. Output of other heavy breeds ( mostly
broad breasted bronze) at 3,140, 000 was up 6 percent from July 1961.
Production of light breeds totaled 1, 489, 000--down 17 percent from
July 1961.

Since the first of the year, the output of turkey poults totaled
88, 541, 000--down 16 percent from the comparable outputin 1961. The
cumulative hatch of heavy white breeds was 26, 957, 000, down 6 percent;
other heavy breeds 54, 562, 000, down 18 percent; and light breeds
7, 022, 000, down 32 percent. Turkey eggs in incubators on August 1
indicate that the hatch of heavy and light breeds in August will be smaller
than in August 1961.
