HATCHERY PRODUCTION - JUNE 1959 \ --"Iy 16,1l959 Chick Production Commercial hatcheries produced 192, 840, 000 chicks during June--down 12 percent from June 1958 but 28 percent above the 1953-57 average for the month. The number of broiler-type chicks hatched was down 6 percent from June last year. The number of egg-type chicks hatched was down 34 percent. The number of broiler-type chicks produced during June totaled 166, 250, 000, compared with 177, 588, 000 in June 1958. For January through June the hatch of broiler-type chicks was up 5 percent. Egg-type chicks hatched during June totaled 26, 590, 000, compared with 40, 376, 000 in June 1958. Production Jan- uary through June totaled 462, 917, 000 -- down 6 percent from this same period Sin 1958. Smaller July hatches than a year ago are in prospect. The demand for chicks, both broiler-type and egg-type, is less than a year ago. The number of broiler- type eggs in incubators on July 1 was 7 percent less than on July 1, 1958. The number of eggs for egg-type chicks in incubators on July 1 was 24 percent less than on July 1 last year. Poult Production Heavy white poult production during June of 3, 071, 000 poults was 27 percent larger than in June 1958. Other heavy breeds (mostly bronze) of 8,476, 000 was 11 percent less than in June last year. The total heavy breed hatch for June was down 3 percent from a year earlier. For the year to date January through June, the hatch of heavy white breed poults was up 31 percent from the same period last year. Other heavy breed poult production January through June was down 6 percent. The number of all heavy breed poults hatched during these months was about the same as a year earlier. The number of light breed poults hatched during June totaled 2, 146, 000 --up 1 percent from June 1958. For the year to date, January through June, the hatch of light breed poults was up 30 percent from this same period last year. The cumulative hatch January through June of all turkey poults totaled 74, 622, 000--4 percent more than were hatched during these months in 1958. Turkey eggs in incubators on July 1 indicate that the number of heavy white breed poults in July will be larger than in July last year. The hatch of light breed poults and other heavy breed poults (mostly broad breasted bronze) will be smaller. U, S. D E P A RT M E N T OF AG RI C U L T U E.
