July 1964 ** EP|O A us 14, 1964 Chick Production There were 231,879,000 chicks produced by hatcheries in July 1964, an increase of 4 percent from the July 1963 hatch, according to the Crop Reporting Board. Broiler chicks totaled 200,239,000, up 3 percent from July last year. During the first 7 months of 1964 there were 1,415,348,000 broiler chicks hatched, an increase of 2 percent from the comparable period in 1963. The number of broiler-type eggs in incubators on August 1 was 4 percent above August 1, 1963, indicating a larger hatch of broiler chicks in August 1964 than in August last year. There were 31,640,000 egg-type chicks hatched in July, 8 percent above the number hatched in July 1963. Increases reported were 16 percent in the East North Central States, 12 percent in the South Atlantic, 8 percent in both the West North Central and Western States, and 5 percent in the South Central States. The North Atlantic States reported no change in July hatch from a year ago. The hatch of egg-type chicks during the first 7 months of 1964 totaled 396,457,000, up 1 percent from the comparable period last year. Eggs in incubators on August 1 were up 2 percent from August 1 last year indicating a slightly larger August hatch of egg- type chicks this year as compared with August last year. Poult Production Heavy breed poults hatched in July totaled 6,428,000, an increase of 7 percent from the July 1963 hatch. The hatch of heavy white breeds was 3,444,000, up 16 percent from July last year. The hatch of other heavy breeds (mostly broad breasted bronze) was 2,984,000, down 1 percent from July last year. The hatch of light breed poults totaled 1,609,000, a decrease of 4 percent from July 1963. There were 97,375,000 poults of all breeds hatched during the first 7 months of 1964. This number is 5 percent more than during this period in 1963. The cumu- lative hatch of heavy white breeds was 37,467,000, up 26 percent; other heavy breeds hatched totaled 51,550,000--down 7 percent and light breeds hatched at 8,358,000 were up 9 percent. The number of heavy breed eggs in incubators on August 1 was down 1 percent from August 1, 1963 indicating a slightly smaller hatch in August this year compared with August last year. The number of light breed eggs in incubators on August 1 was up 3 percent from August 1, 1963.
