My dear Mr. Carleton:

I can't tell you how grateful
I was to get your very kind note about
young Joe. Of course, it has been a
terrible shock to Mrs. Kennedy and to
me. His death has brought home to me
the realism of war, which I anticipated
would come to so many families in this
country.

I have thought of you a great
many times in the course of the last
few years and have wondered what you
were thinking. I do hope you will get
in touch with me in Palm Beach this win-
ter. I am planning to be there for elec-
tion and I would love to have a chat with
you.
